Trying to FIX: Water Damaged Nintendo Switch Lite from eBay
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 бер 2020
- Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a faulty turquoise Nintendo Switch Lite purchased from eBay. It has no display (black screen) but the Switch Lite sounds like it is working.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince. - Навчання та стиль

Your videos have gave me confidence to "try to fix" things. I am a Amateur Radio Operator and since I have been watching your videos, I have built multiple antennas and now I am looking into building dual band transceiver from a kit. Thanks for all you do!
Well done, Vince. Tips for you: To recreate missing or broken tracks that are this close together, use a strand of bare copper wire (from standard stranded hookup wire) so you don't have to deal with removing the enamel coating. It's much easier to tin, as it does not have any coating or residue on it.
Use your tweezers to hold the wire down on the track as you solder it. The solder will not stick to the tweezers. If you clean and tin the soldering iron tip immediately prior to soldering the wire, you don't need to add additional solder to the joint, so that frees up your hand from having to hold the solder.
When the joint is completed, use your tweezers or that x-acto knife tip to hold the wire a little before the joint and _then_ wiggle it free against the knife edge or the tweezers. This prevents the wire from coming apart at the joint.
The factory where I worked had an assortment of "track strips" (I don't know if they're called that) of differing widths for reworking purposes. They were adhesive-backed so you'd stick one down and solder it in place, apply the mask and it would make for a very professional looking repair.
Thanks GYKA, I will try the single copper strand next time (after the John Lewis DAB radio that I have just fixed), and the x-acto knife wiggle. I was told about the sticky track strips before but I have never seen them in use. They sound good but I could imagine on tiny tracks it would still be difficult. Thanks for sharing your tips :-)
What's the appropriate gauge for the stranded wire ?
TRUE! ... i've told him the same half an year ago ;)
@@technixbul maybe with the hundreds of messages he gets he may of missed it
@@romaine-ricardofrancis4690 It does not matter much, as long as it's stranded wire and it's relatively flexible. As an example, household wiring has much thicker and harder strands than say, speaker wire. Lamp cord cable has pretty fine strands, and you can twist a few together beforehand for thicker, higher current-carrying traces.
Mate, just want to thank you for making content on these desperate times. I've been stuck inside the house for over 2 weeks now and your videos help me get through the day and forget about the disaster that's going out outside. Stay safe and keep it up!
Hope you have a balcony or a garden. Stay safe Sir. 👍
Jesus is coming, don't let it be too late to be saved. No one knows the day or the hour, come to Jesus while there is still time! The Bibles end time prophecies are coming true that means we are in the end times! Come to Jesus while there is still time!
why are all the broken switches the ones with fortnite installed... seems like kids rage over fortnite and destroy their systems.
Probably
Or they spill there drink on it
because it's a free game
Emotions that become active while gaming makes player want to put out more effort with actions, but sadly all these shit devices are designed for people who are absolutely emotionless while gaming. And intentionally break down fast so dedicated players would buy more overpriced low quality trash. Consumer exploitation. It's very popular nowadays, you should try this get rich fast scheme too to experience getting rich fast by exploiting fools.
@@_to_dream_or_not_to_dream I have no idea what any of this means, except that Fortnite is low quality trash, which I agree with
when i started watching vince i started getting into restoring stuff and now ive restored like 3 walkmans, a vcr, a cassette deck, and a polaroid camera. so thats something
@Bloofa thinking about doing it on the wm-w800 (dual deck walkman) that i ordered
You spend a lot of money, to entertain us, a big Thank you for that. And you getting better and better. And Great Music :)
He makes more back obviously
I agree.
@@PixelatedRover
More than enough
DJ g3Ry he also makes videos for revenue so he basically makes more back to entertain us and fix stuff, so according to my calculations you’re wrong
DJ g3Ry hey i’m talking with the same dude who makes robux and tiktok scams
If you think that the backlight is the issue, try shining a torch at the screen as a first test. If the LCD is working you will be able to see an image.
he mentioned it in the video 34:40 . he probably wanted to show people the full process of trouble shooting.
If it's just the right board wouldn't just getting a replacement board work too?
I don't have access to the tools he used
Jose you can't buy those boards I've looked
@@joserachi96 probably can't get one on its own but if you bought a switch with a busted lcd but working backlight that would be the best way to get one I figure. Get as busted of a switch lite as you could find but with a working backlight and that board would be ok to my understanding.
Have you thought about your subscribers sending you their broken gadgets and making videos on those? That way you save some money and looks cool to the subscribers to see their products on a video? PS learned so much from watch your videos... stay safe -Alex V
I second this. I have a few dualshock 4 controller boards that need looking at that I'd happily donate
He has answered that in a video a while ago he doesn't want to feel responsible if he can't fix it. I am the same way I used to fix other peoples computers for free and felt guilty if I couldn't even though I didn't break them so I pretty much don't fix anyone but immediate families electronics.
I would like that, bur he says he doesnt likw working on other people stuff. But if they DONATE something, he will work on it. The person has to not want it back though. I think he did do a Nintendo Switch someone gave him once.
Id donate my broke wii mote id love to see whats up with it
People would send their gaming consoles, this channel would get super boring with only gaming consoles. I prefer variety instead of fixing trash over and over and over...
The celebration of joy when it turned on 😊, excellent work Vince.
Your reaction when the Nintendo logo appeared was perfect hahahahaha

?
Hi Vince, i love your videos and watch them as soon as they come out. I recently bought my own water damaged switch and followed what you did in this video and i managed to mend it. when it turned on i ran around the room celebrating. thanks a lot your amazing.
Yaaaaaah another video love the fact I can come home from work and chill out watching you once again please stay safe you and your family!
Feels like the original owner of the switch was taking his switch a bath 😂😲 oops 😬 lol
Yep
I love your videos, Vince, and I admire your patience, perseverance and thoroughness! Greetings from the Netherlands.
Great fix Vince. This helps me through the staying Home thing. Stay safe.
That is another job well done Vince. I am enjoying your fix it videos. Can't wait to watch more.
Well done Vince. Love it when a plan comes together!
Excellent Vince, great to see another successful repair. I'm looking forward to starting repair videos myself now I have a workshop in my shed :D
Hey Vince, excellent work on the repair. Love to see your celebrations! In regards to the little crack on the bottom edge, you could try melting it from the inside with your soldering iron. I've done that on a couple of devices now (nothing as new as a Switch Lite!) and have had pretty good results.
As usual great vid Vince, always look forward to them. When you were repairing the broken trace, instead of using enamel wire just use a strand from a multi strand cable, then you don't have to strip the enamel off and you won't contaminate the joint with burnt enamel or have to worry about getting a good joint, enamel wire is great for long runs but for short distances such as this it's not neccessary. In regards to your comment about liquid damage and wifi etc, i've found on the bigger chips, such as wifi, PMIC, relatek etc that if they are completely bad and the tegra can't talk to them through their serial bus that the console will not boot at all, this is both a good thing and bad thing when diagnosing, if wifi chip is good but certain contacts aren't getting where they need to go you get an orange screen and if the RAM isn't making a connection to the tegra in some form or another you get a blue screen - although that can sometimes be software too. also i find myself saying out loud flux Vince, fluuuux when you were repairing the trace ;)
Brilliant info, especially the orange and blue screen. Thanks so much. I never knew about the different colour screens so this will come in handy in the future. Makes sense with the enamel wire as well. I have lots of stranded network cable (cat5e and cat6) which has 7 strands per core so I can use a single strand :-)
Well done! Awsome to find a such a new console with a "easy" fix after the last nightmare! Thank you
Something you may want to try Vince. (Practice on and old laptop or similar first). Buy a cheap soldering iron. Use it for plastic welding. If you are careful so you don't go all the way through you can push small amounts of melted plastic case across the the break to lock it (while squeezing firmly together). I go down the crack alternating back and forwards left and right over the crack like stitches, then use some plastic 3D pen refills to weld over top for strength. I try and mix the edge of the new refill weld with melted case to sort of chemically bond. I do this for laptop case repairs and the results are sometimes undetectable but if not at least you strengthen the case and stop the crack growing.
This is super relaxing to watch and the music is everything
Great job, good to see things being brought back to life.
Brilliant video. Love these long ones. Proper in depth.
Great video and great job Vince! I love your choice of music! Stay safe! Cheers mate from Zagreb, Croatia!

Nice video Vince, keep up the good work in these times
nice work vince. i'm a huge fan of yours. your videos inspire me to fix my stuff. Thank you for your videos
So the resistor blew and took out the track at the same time, great fix, you are rapidly becoming the UK Louis Rossman, minus the swearing and the dark circles from lack of sleep LOL
Always nice to hear people who achieved sth. So humble
The Switch Lite Savior! Good job Vince!
Vince , On I pad rehab and Louis Rossman I think they also tin the ends of the jumper wires first which might help you out next time . Thanks for keeping us sane and entertained 🙏
Is it just me or when Vince gets happy you smile?
Way to go!! Two switch lites fixed in a row!! Hopefully the gray one fixes up ok too.
Great video again vince. A switch is my next console to get. Hope ur all safe
Man, I love your Nintendo Switch videos!
Funnily enough I was fixing tiniest tracks on a ribbon cable and shorted sub-mm capacitors on water damaged ps vita's back touchpad and just as you finished with your fix, I did as well and it worked! Just a little shared luck story :)
Sweet repair and a great deal on a unit. I wonder what is wrong with the other unit now. :) Can't wait to see your next video.
Very nice Vince! I can’t wait for the next lite
I just have to say I really like your videos because you haven't sold out to the creepy "ASMR" style repair/restoration videos that plague youtube right now.

The turquoise switch was definitely dropped in the bath 😅🤦♂️
Awesome job Vince!
You could have used the missing component from the damaged yellow switch :) Good result getting it fixed
Thanks Vince that video made my day.
I was waiting for this since you mentioned it!
Christmas in March? Interesting choice of music. Great vid as usual

Thank you Paul, hope you are keeping well :-)
@@Mymatevince We are all fine here, hope you and yours are too. Oh and hurry with the video of the second lite, I'm getting itchy feet :D
great video as always Vince!
Read “Water Damaged” and immediately felt sorry for you Vince. Good luck! (Even though you’ve already done it, I haven’t seen it yet and I’m excited!)
Update: I’m very happy with how this ones turned out so far, it’s not perfect and might not last forever, but it works now and that’s great
Yes!!! Love the switch videos
Cheers Vince!
What an amazing and satisfying fix!!!
Great job vince love your videos great job
thermal paste gets thicker with time the moisture in it leaves from the heat causing it to thicken and i would recommend putting it on both side like nintendo has done but! it would as you said be fine :) Love the vids thanks for the work you put in! learned bunch from you
Ahh i absolutely love this! What a great spot on your part. The excitement in your tone is so real, my heart was racing for you haha. Love your videos man, you're a big inspiration to me starting a channel.
this relaxing music is soo good
Yeah it is, think it’s a piano cover of a piece of music called “carol of the bells” by John Williams from the Home Alone soundtrack if I’m not mistaken...
Argh Jay Em, yes, you are mistaken, it is a Ukrainian folk song "shchedryk", written by Mykola Leontovych in 1916. Now you know this song as Jingle Bells.
It’s “carol of the bells” and it’s the kind of music I hear ALL THE F*CKING TIME around the holidays and it drives me nuts!
Man i really like your videos I work as mobile repair and i enjoy your videos 👍🏻
I'm only 3 minutes in and I'm already impressed that plaster is staying on.
Excellent Video. Learn a great deal. Keep up the good work. BTW my switch lite is the same exact color.
Anyone have a Ron Pratt moment at 31:54 Love the Content Vince Thanks for all you do
awesome fix, vince!!
Love it! Good looking
Looks like the switch killer days are long gone lol.
Impressive fix Vince 👍
Just been through a Ben & jerrys Chocolate Fudge ice cream tub watching through vid. Wass only supposed to eat half, i blame you vince! :) Great job
very well, I love this channel, thank you
The little black SMD's are ferrite beads, not capacitors. Since they're in series the circuit can't work without them as that breaks the circuit. So something is probably still broken/not working correctly (Because it looks like one is missing - hard to tell on video). You can replace them with a wire link in a pinch. They just filter out high frequency content from the signals before the signals go trough wires (read: antenna's) for emissions compliance.
As he says though, there might be more corrosion underneath chips and stuff. Ideally, I guess, you would take the parts off, clean and re-apply. These components are really tiny though, and hard to do without proper equipment.
there is only one bga chip on board. rest of them use bottomside as ground/heatsink so there is no place for water to go under. And removing BGA one is not worth a risk, there is no chance he can return it to correct position later
Hi Vince, love your vids, my name is also Vince! Great quality vids , what is your soldering kit?
I really loved that reaction when it worked.!
Have you ever thought of investing in an ultrasonic cleaner for electronics? It can clean in places you can't see and without desoldering things.
He has one ages. Not sure why he doesn't use it.
Thank you for uploading !
Good job fixing this Switch. Please do some Gameboy repair Videos there are some huge joblots on ebay with faulty gameboy color advances etc. These are usally easy to fix, because the electronics are much simpler.
Vince, consider investing in a circuit writing pen. May help with redoing traces.
Well done Vince, another successful repair! I remember in one of your previous vids you mentioned that you got a big tub of thermal paste - for the future, I recommend GD900 (aliexpress item number: 32967354006), I got it after recommendation from another youtuber Tech YES City. I got 30g tub which will last me a bloody lifetime, but used it on my bros, nieces and nephews and mine PC parts (CPUs, GPUs) and it works well! Costs just 2 quid, performs as well as arctic MX4 .And that greasy residue seems to be normal, as I had the same thing on mine.
Good job!! Even I feel proud! 👏
Stripped down a barely used bread maker as impossible to find one now and it was not turning the paddle. Had to take the whole thing to pieces as not designed for replacement but i found the issue was the belt had basically melted away. Got a spare coming then rebuild time. Would never have bothered before watching your vids :)
25:39 that face "come on you lil piece of shut light up'' :D
You're the inspiration for me. 👌
I would like to thank you for all the old networking videos helped me with a job interview only question is what happens to all these fixed switch lite ive been looking over ebay for a broken one to repair if it sounds cheap enough but cant find broken switch lights on ebay
31:55 "Salute to a new beginning" Ron Pratt of Midwest Truck's usual video intro music.
thanks for the video, just bought one with a similar fault, in my case pcb is ok but the backlight ribbon burned on one leg, will try to restore or put a cable around
same pin btw :D
I love your reaction when it turned on🤣
Great job buddy.....that’s great it wasn’t the screen, that’s when it gets expensive 👍
