  • What is a Gasification Boiler? It is a very efficient boiler, and I got to see one first hand.

I live in a rural area and lots of folks have these! I'm not sure you explained how they work perfectly so I'll try and add a little (I'm also not an expert) Instead of a traditional fire, like a fireplace where air blows across logs and the smoke goes up a chimney until its burned up. These greatly cut back the air to the fire once it's going, but the wood is in an environment so hot that it keeps "burning" but the exhaust is now rich and flammable like propane. The boiler directs this gas to burn across the heat exchanger in a secondary firebox efficiently because it's now separated from the very insulating ashes and logs in the primary fire box. Additionally when the water reaches temperature that blower will kick off and the primary firebox will go into a smolder, barely burning until the water temp decreases again.

Steve look into garn boiler I had one in 2012 it was awesome. Do not burn a fire down against mother nature and don’t use wet wood. Thanks for some of the good info on your series.

I wasn't expecting this in my Steven Baczek Architect feed this morning. Nice overview to let folks know there's more than one way to produce heat for rural communities. You really need to be a hands on/knowledgeable owner to use a system like this, this isn't for everyone. Also, at least this system isn't inexpensive, but there are ones similar to this that are more affordable.

My mom would always tell me she wasn't expecting what I was about to do or say.....I personally love the outliers in a system

A great option for a rural setting

All wood burns by gasification, that's why the flame in the fire is above the wood. Then the remaining fixed carbon you'd recognize as the coals in the fire.

My understanding is that these burn down, much hotter, and far more efficient,

You aren't actually burning the wood in the traditional sense; you heat it to the point of chemical breakdown with limited oxygen. The wood in pyrolysis is undergoing an endothermic reaction, absorbing heat to break itself down. In combustion, the wood is undergoing an exothermic reaction, directly releasing heat.

@@patrickkenny2077 a campfire works the same way, that's why the flame is above the wood. A downdraft gasifier just orders the phases by temperature to get a more complete burn.

      @@Zorlig pyrolysis is not combustion.

@@patrickkenny2077 yes that is correct. Where you error is in thinking that this doesn't also happen in a normal campfire.

There is a climate crisis. We waste too much water and energy.
We all need to try to be more energy efficient if we can. Wasting water and wasting energy wastes money.
