Born in 1966 - this reminds me of 1970's NYC - it was dirty and nasty - but it produced some really beautiful music like this. Curtis and P-Funk spoke to me in ways no other musicians could. It all stands strong to this day.
I was born in 1988 and i can very clearly recognize there will never be talent like this seen again, its just an era of amazing, amazing music that will always connect to the parts of the human soul that a tune like this can reach.
This man changed my life..and continues to inspire. One of his most excruciatingly slow burn 'story' tracks that grab you by the gut and doesn't let go...a true musical experience...oh HELL yes :D Mx
True that... I hope more people who love Daft Punk discover some of these great artists and love their music to as a result. That's one of the great things about Daft Punk, that no matter what time, somewhere in the world someone -maybe someone young- is looking up Curtis, Giorgio, Herbie, James Brown and others - because they saw their names written in some album notes or mentioned in an interview. For that alone (besides all the other reasons) I'll always love them.
On this day in 1975 {June 7th} Curtis Mayfield performed "Billy Jack", "Jesus", and "When Seasons Change" on the nationally syndicated television program, 'Soul Train'... All three songs were from his 1975 studio album, 'There's No Place Like America Today', and on July 13th, 1975 the album peaked at #13 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart... Between 1970 and 1997 the Chicago native, as a solo artist, had thirty records on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, six made the Top 10 with his biggest hit being "Freddie's Dead", it peaked at #2* {for 2 weeks} in 1972... As a member of the Impressions he had twenty nine records on the Hot R&B Singles chart... Curtis Lee Mayfield passed away at the young age of 57 on December 26th, 1999... May both he and Don Cornelius {1936 - 2012} R.I.P. * For the two weeks that "Freddie's Dead" was at #2 on the Hot R&B Singles chart, the #1 record for both those weeks was "I'll Be Around" by the Spinners ...
Man, the production is so crisp and stripped down...almost sounds like a modern recording!!! Curtis totally in his element on this track. Any artists out there today that can match him!?!?!?
Soul Brother Curtis Mayfield is a legend! And always will be. I first saw Superfly and Billy Jack at The Century Drive In, Inglewood,CA! Of course the drive In is long gone!
If I could add that comment to every online forum, DP video online and DP review, I would - sums them up perfectly. Real artists don't forget what made them want to make music, and more than that, Daft Punk didn't just remember - they remembered them and continue to share them with as many people as they can, for the sheer love of the music. All my love to Daft Punk, and to the artists they listen to.
Curtis Mayfield - vocals, guitar, keyboards, production Rich Tufo - keyboards, arrangement Gary Thompson - guitar Phil Upchurch - guitar Joseph "Lucky" Scott - bass guitar Quinton Joseph - drums Henry Gibson - percussion
would love to get the studio version with extension (what Curtis does with his voice at the end makes me fly !!!!) ... everytime then i got to replay ^^
I always remember the first time I heard this track .......I thought yeah, great Curtis........and then the horns came in and WOW..........WHAT HIT mE?
see this is exactly why daft punks new album is all full of disco, this is proof that daft punk has always been about disco but now the newer generation doesnt understand that, they just want loud grindgy techo and dubstep, this is what daft punk was all about and always will be. two robots that love like humans

This is just so unreally good... that rhythm doesn't flinch.

Horns at 3:11 are GOD. I heard the closing horns years ago, without the vocals, and spent a full year hunting down the track. Excellent posting.

Beauty Rest ahead of our time that’s for sure
