  • I show you guys my incubator and show you taking the eggs off. The chicks will be hatching in the next couple of days and they need to be laying on their side. I'll let you guys know the hatch rate I get once they hatch.
Here is the link to my over all review of this incubator,

With incubators like that, you'll likely find that spreading a washcloth over the bottom will help for a couple reasons... One, it gives the eggs some stability as they are pipping... The chick rolls around in the egg as it does it, and the egg being free to wobble makes this more difficult... The washcloth will hold the egg still and allow the chick to spin inside the egg the way it needs to... Second, bumble foot happens right off the bat when they slip or stumble on a smooth surface... The washcloth (and a few wrinkles) challenges the chick to strengthen its feet and provides a non slip surface... Anyway, just a suggestion from someone who used similar hatchers for years. It wont throw off your humidity, but you will need to lift the corners to make sure your water level stays up... Thanks for sharing brother...

You might find a dish towel works good as well, giving you a little extra to incorporate some wrinkles...

Good luck with the hatch. I always get excited when they start to hatch but my dog Daisy gets a little nervous. The more the biddies cheep, the more she barks. :-)

Is that box made from polystyrene? How easy would it be to chip bits off & break it, especially at the corners? also, when chickens hatch like that, how do they learn to eat & drink & be grown-up chickens without a Mother in with them? Thank you.

Essem Sween yes, the chicks just know instinctively how to do all that.

Essem Sween I have the same incubator. The incubator is made out of polystyrene. It's thick but you could damage it if you are rough with it. The chicks do well without their mothers. When they are new hatchlings you do have to dunk their beaks in the water to teach them where the water is. I usually only have to do the once, they pick is up really quick. When I put them in the brooder I put chick food out on a paper towel they figure out how to eat pretty much on their own. Chicks have the instinct in them to survive without their mothers. But I can say this watching a momma hen raising her chicks is a very cool thing to watch. It so neat. They are amazing mothers.

Duckhead Homestead Have you seen Patara's Miss Patti LaBelle who hatched the Duck Egg? First time she went broody and as she was taking the eggs to candle Miss Patti was chasing to get them back under. When the duckling hatched, she was tucking it under her wing, showing it the water. So cute.

Essem Sween Yes I saw that. It's so sweet :) With my broody hen all she would have to do is make a certain cluck and all the little chicks would gather underneath her. It was so neat. I should have filmed it so I could share it.
