I’ve had mine for about 10 years with zero maintenance. I’m finally going to sharpen the blade and change the oil today. This thing is a beast !!!!!! It’s bulletproof
So you are bragging about not doing maintenance for 10 yrs? Ok, to each their own....🤷♂
I just replaced it. Lol easier for me it's earned it's keep.
@@LarryB-inFL Well he's not bragging, but just saying that the motor is very durable even without maintenance for 10 years. I've had mine for 5 years and I haven't done any maintenance whatsoever, I also live in Canada where winters get super cold and this thing runs great. Again, this is no brag but just a testament to a great engine. I'm about to do my first oil change right now, change the air filter, clean it up as recommended, hoping to do this more regularly from now on.
@@1983Jackoditto although my engine is on my pressure washer. I am finally getting around to doing it this year
Damn dude
Thank you very much. Perfect instructions AND.....no annoying music.
You are welcome, David. Thanks for the compliment.
Agreed
Yep good video clip end not music. Perfect.
Nicely done, thank you. An old farmers tip for the burnt oil, save a worn paint brush to brush burnt oil onto the undercarriage. This will aid mulching by helping to prevent cut grass build up, especially when wet.
You just saved my day! I haven't had my GCV160 serviced in at least 5 years. Just kind of forgot. Today I pulled the cord and it only went halfway. Uh oh! I followed your instructions and bought a liter of 10W30 SAE from Canadian Tire. Emptied the old (dark and dirty!) oil from the mower, filled it back up with the new stuff. I had to (somewhat gently) pull the starter cord a bunch of times to get things moving again, but once I got it moving it was able to start the engine normally again. Tip for any other novices like me: If you get a lot of smoke after you've done the oil change and started it up, it may mean you've overfilled the oil reserve. That's what I did. I just poured some back out and tried again. No more smoke. The dipstick on these mowers is hard to read when you're checking for too much oil.
Thanks so much for this!!! I've had my lawnmower 5 years and never changed the oil. Thanks for walking me through it!
You are welcome, Tristan.
I’m on 4 years on mine, going to change it this year, guess I’m not the only one
To prevent oil spilling on mower deck and floor as you tilt the mower, leave the dipstick screwed in until you have the mower completely tipped up on its side. Then loosen the dipstick until the big notches in the threads of the dipstick are exposed allowing the oil to drain out. Do not completely remove dipstick.Just enough to allow the oil to drain. When drained, re tighten dipstick before righting mower. Again, this prevents oil dripping on floor and mower deck. Remove dipstick, wipe clean and re fill engine with oil.
That's a great idea. Thank you for taking the time to comment. It's contributions like yours that improve the value of videos.
@@Know-How-Now You're welcome. Glad to help. I looked at a few of your other videos. Well done. I hope your channel continues to grow.

or just wipe it down with a rag when you're done
Hey Know How - remember, NearlyNormal, from above, means not quite normal. If you do it his way, you will likely get oil all over your hand when you pull the dipstick out while the mower is tilted all the way over. I agree with Nemo - just wipe the little bit off the deck top when you're done - your way is probably better!
Thanks for the video, I found a similar mower on the side of the road, I was trying to figure out how to change the oil and came across your video, thank you your voice was clear and I could see everything I needed to know how to do.
You are welcome, Travis.
A friend gave me one for free.
Changed the spark plug and replaced the carburetor (very cheap) and it started right up.
Got me a drag behind mower now.
Changing the oil next.
Thank you for this clear and concise information, much appreciated!

This video was incredibly useful. No more taking my Mountfield SP555 lawnmower for its annual oil change at the repair shop, as after watching you do it, I now feel confident to take this on. Thank you so much.
You are welcome, David. Check out the comment by one of the viewers. He suggests tipping the mower, then cracking open the oil cap... that will make it less messy.
@@Know-How-Now Thank you for that, it should indeed make things less messy before the mower is in the correct position to expel the oil. It was good of you to take the time and very much appreciated ☺️
Great video - straight forward, simple, and effective. Thanks!

Great video! Thank you for giving information on how many ounces are needed.
You are welcome, Ron. Happy mowing, lol.
I was wondering about this too. After I read in the manual that the engine oil tank was 0.58 quarts, I was trying to confirm the amount to refill. Your numbers match what I found in the manual, 12.0 ~ 13.5 oz (0.35 ~ 0.41 l).
I went by the dipstick when I refilled mine, but it appeared I was only putting in about 1/4 of a quart, so I was trying to confirm. This video helped, thanks.
Great video just picked one of these up and have never changed the oil on a mower i gave done plenty of car oil changes so i spent about 10 minutes looking for the sump plug haha

We've had ours for at least five years, maybe longer, and have never changed it, nor have I ever added any. Checked the dipstick a few minutes ago and it's still full and reasonably clear, though getting gray now. Well, better late than never.
thanks. purchased my Honda used and didn't know what type of oil was required. yours and several other's suggested 10W30. I'll go with that.
You are welcome.
Always found it difficult to read Honda dipsticks with fresh oil because of the gray color and the X's, especially in bright sunlight. Wish they'd improve it an add a definitive FULL line.
Great video and informative ❤
Now I have no excuse not to change the oil. 😉 Good video.
Thanks for the compliment, Roy. Sorry you no longer have an excuse not to change to oil. lol. One tip that a viewer added, you can keep the cap on, tip the mower, the open the cap to drain the oil. I tried this way and it was less messy. I love that UA-cam allows public collaboration.
Good video short but to the point!
10 years and iv never changed my mowers oil, still running strong 💪🏽

I sent your video to my daughter where she could do her own oil change
Thanks for passing it along. I just sent a link to a neighbor who is working up the courage to give it a try.
Perfect, Thank you!
You are welcome, Devin!
I have a craftsman mower with this honda engine and the manual says that the dipstick reading should be above the Xs on the dipstick (IE: when the oil is covering all the Xs, that is the lowest acceptable level) although my dipstick looks just like yours and I can't see an indicator mark for the highest acceptable oil level. It also lists the oil capacity as 18.5 ounces.
The tag on my new Honda gcv 160 says that the oil should be at the top of those lines....
Excellent video, thank you.

Ok. I’m older and a girl. How did you get the oil out?
I've tipped the mower on it's side and the oil drained out of the fill/check level tube. I should have shown a picture of the oil draining out.... though it's nice to talk to you.
I suppose to fit almost 1L. This way not everything comes out but it's the quick way to get some of old oil out.

I've never heard that about the oxidation of the rags, makes me want to take a stroll around my garage :)
I did a lot of research before I made the video about the rags being combustible. I later found out the it's only certain kinds of oils that are combustible. Motor oil does not oxidize. My brother is a machinist, every shop except the present one he works at treated oily rags as if they could spontaneously combust. I know that linseed oil does oxidize, it used to be used in paints. Unless you are sure of what kind of oil you are using, I would bag it in plastic as a precaution.
Better to be safe :)
Linseed oil used with turpentine , rags used for clean up should be opened up to air dry otherwise spontaneous combustion will happen if they remain wadded up !!!!!!!
Very nice!
Thanks for the compliment, Ivan. Happy mowing, lol.
Thank you for this video....
You are welcome.
Would it be OK to use 10W-30 synthetic oil? Or even 5W-30? I have some that I bought for my car.
The owners manual says to use SAE 10W-30 oil. I'd stick with Honda's recommendation. Also, you might void the warranty.
If you run synthetic you get less engine wear and don't have to run it to burn yourself because it flows at greater temperature range.
I'm a little confused, I just bought a Husqvarna lawnmower with the GCV 160 engine and when I looked up fluid capacity for it it says that it holds 0.58 quarts which converts to about 21.5 ounces. I need to do some more research, you said that yours holds about 13 ounces....
I just used a different online converter and this one is telling me that 0.58 quarts = 18.56 us fluid ounces...🤔
Hi Jeff, I double checked the Honda manual it says capacity is 17 oz or .5 liters. I agree .58 quarts = 18.56 fluid ounces. The difference between the two capacities is a head scratcher, perhaps an error in Husqvarna or Hondas manuals?
@@Know-How-Now I haven't filled it with oil yet but when I do I'm going to just be conservative and add so much at a time until the dipstick reads full and then run it for a few minutes, let it rest a minute and then check it again and figure out exactly how much this engine holds then.
Thanks. Didn't know it was 12 to 13 ounces.
You are welcome.
The long filler neck is stuck to the cap and i cant open it
How did you drain it??? If it doesn't have a drain plug underneath then how would you drain it the video was great and affirmative, until... you didn't show how to give it an oil change.
I am sorry that the video no longer shows tipping the mower and letting the oil drain out of the fill tube. Somehow, there is a glitch with the UA-cam playback and that segment of the video is no longer being shown. Hopefully UA-cam fixes the problem, that segment of the video used to play, you will notice that until just recently (video has been posted for years), people are commenting about how to drain the oil. Agh. Sorry.
@@Know-How-Now hmm... ok
I found a way to fix the video so that it now includes showing how to drain the oil. Thanks to everyone who mentioned it. I never would have known that some UA-cam quirk removed that section of the video.
@@Know-How-Now no problem, thank you for fixing it.
Do I need to run out any gas from the tank first?
Hi Charlie, you don't have to run the gas out first.
So no oil filter?
Nope. Just dump the old out and add new.
You said it says 17oz is the fill capacity. But then you say 12 13 1/2 oz then you mark 20oz
I'm so confused
I'd suggest shutting off the fuel line, then running the mower to empty the carb of fuel and warm the oil, to prevent dumping a carb full of gas into the cylinder and flooding it when you tip the mower.
Are you using car engine oil?
Yes.
Go to top hatchmark , if you mow, hills
Thanks for commenting, James, that's a great suggestion.
is thaT 10 W30 OIL?
Yes
4-22-23 - a couple of people have commented that tipping the mower and dumping the oil out of the fill tube into the container is not shown any more. Apparently, UA-cam has deleted that part of my video. The video has been posted for 4 years and no one has commented about part of the video being missing until recently. Sorry, I don't have any power to fix this, maybe UA-cam will fix the problem.
5-1-23 I found a way to fix the video so that it now shows how to drain the oil. Thanks to anyone that mentioned that part had disappeared from the video so that I was aware of the problem and figure out a way to correct it.

Apparently, motor oil cannot spontaneously combust, but some other oils can. I could not find a good source that listed which oils oxidize. Oil based paints and stains are often cited. My brother is a machinist, he scoffed at me when I suggested that petroleum based oils will not spontaneously combust. He said machine shops put their oily rags in a metal container with a lid.
I am going to continue to put any kind of oily rag in a bag. I would spend more time trying to figure out if it is or isn't a potential hazard. If you want to read about spontaneous combustion here is a link to an MIT document on the topic: web.mit.edu/parmstr/Public/NRCan/CanBldgDigests/cbd189_e.html
I'd love to know what genius decided lawn mowers no longer need drain plugs.
My ride on lawn mower does have it!!! A self-propelled does not need it otherwise it would cost you and additional $100 or more to buy it. LOL
You held the oil bottle upside down....other way there is no glug glug
I like the glug glug pour, lol. Thanks for the tip.
Hahaha I did my first oil change after 5 years 😂😂!
Honda makes great engines but I'm curious how/why they didn't have an oil filter on these engines. Crazy to me.
It's not just these, most push mowers sized engines don't use oil filters. They don't really have an oil flow system, like a car does, so there isn't a pump to push it through a filter. It essentially is just splashed on the moving components in the engine using an oil slinger. These are pretty simple engines, and the small amount of oil they use is ideally changed frequently enough to make a filter unnecessary.
Thanks. I have the same mower, "smart drive, twin blade", but no manual.
I put the mower on a stand to see if there was a drain plug underneath but nope.
So tip it on it's side LOOL. I expected more than that, on a $500 +, Honda product. Just sayin'.
I agree. How hard would it be for Honda to put a drain plug under the engine to allow the oil to drain without having to tip the whole mower over?
👍
didn't see you drain the oil
Well, that's weird. I just watched my original mp4 video and it shows the mower being tipped and the oil dumping into the container. I'll have to see if I can do something about that.... not sure why it is missing from the youtube playback.
I don't see anything I can do about the oil dump shot disappearing from the video. Maybe UA-cam will correct it and the full video will reappear again. Thanks for telling me. A comment 9 days ago also asked about dumping the oil too, which I thought was odd. The video has been published 4 years - you and Kelly York are the only ones asking about how to actually drain the oil. It must be a relatively new "glitch".
@@Know-How-Now no worries. Just tip it over and it will drain
Thanks for your video
You just need to let people know what kind of oil and show it then it was perfect
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

Very articulate lady with clear speech and overall great video taking(clarity of what is shown)! But the content is not good. She skipped important info or missed to elaborate. For example.... around the 3:00 min mark of the video, her dipstick measurement reading is confusing because the filler neck is at angle so when one takes measurements the top side of the dipstick registers (almost 30+% more along the scale) oil reaching at a level that is considerably different than at the UNDERSIDE of the dipstick. The question then becomes, which reading to you take into account? The easy answer is offcourse the higher one but one may just check the underside of the dipstick and call it good. Then, as all engine manuals suggest, never overfill (which can break seals and damage the engine).
Hi George, constructive criticism is always welcome. I tell you the capacity of the oil and the range of oil needed to refill and show you the oil on the cross hatches. I assume that the viewers are intelligent enough/have common sense to figure out the final level of oil to add. If I went on and on about getting the level perfect people as you suggest, people would be complaining... I stick to the topic of the title and assume a reasonable level of common sense.
Perhaps the style/level of information on this channel does not meet your needs and maybe I am missing a potential audience. You can capitalize on my weakness and post your own video on how to change the oil on a Honda Mower with more detail.
May want to use a different oil... Yeah like anything besides Pennzoil, pretty sure these mowers come with a manual..
It would be a good idea to unplug the spark plug also.
Many recommend doing that, but I don't see the point and chose not to put it in the instructions. You have to hold the safety bar and pull the cord to start the mower. Maybe I'm missing something, but how could the mower spontaneously start while changing the oil?
Pennzoil is the worst oil.
I have been using Pennzoil Platinum synthetic oil for in all my cars for about 25 years and to me is the best of the affordable oils and way better than Mobil 1.
No drain plug? Turning an engine to dump out oil just stupid.
Initially, I thought it was kind of dumb not to have drain plug. Though, in some ways maybe not so bad. You don't have to have to fight to get a drain plug loose. It's easier to dump it.
@@Know-How-Now What about upsetting the carb? Gas going into the cylinder. Hard restarting etc. You dont overturn your car to drain the oil.
If it had a drain plug, it would be on the underside of the mower, you would have to tip it to remove it. If you clean the deck you would have to tip it on it's side to do that too.
I just changed the oil in mine. After tipping it, it started on the first pull. I mowed the lawn. No problems.
@@Know-How-Now 8 keep my d4ck clean and change my oil and never had to tip the mower over.

Terrible design
Could you please add to the comment and tell what you don't like about it? People considering buying this mower will know what you don't like about it. I'm not trying to be confrontational, we just need to know why you think it is a bad design.
It’s so simple. It’s actually a great design. My dads Honda mower is 35 years old. Mine is 15. I let mine drain for hours because I want all the old oil out. How hard is it to tilt the mower to its side? It’s not. I use synthetic here in Minnesota because fall can get cold fast here.
you just spilled oil on the concrete you need a tube inserted to drain the oil.... you are going to spill that flimsy tray of oil...this video is environmentally unsafe and should be taken down......
