    • @InCognito-vx8gi
      @InCognito-vx8gi 2 роки тому +2

@@jackbloomer1334 Yeah I get that, but they are the main characters lol.
And besides the name giving Commissar Gaunt the Ghosts aren't really bulletproof, considering how many (named) characters of them die in the series.
Furthermore we have to consider, as Dan Abnett started writing the books it was still very Oldhammer.
The lore was crude at best, inconclusive and paradox at worst.
Many of the vehicles in the current lore were created by Dan Abnett as he wrote the books, and the powergap between (Chaos) Space Marines and normal humans was never really described back then, except very esoteric stuff like 'literal Angels of Death'.
You can't translate that correctly in a more or less realistic book format without making some compromisses.
But I get your point, *SPOILER* one of the Tanith Ghosts easily blows the head of a Death Guard Chaos Space Marine off in the first or second book, by simply putting his lasrifle/flashlight to the maximum power setting.
The whole mag was empty after that one shot, but still. If THAT is all you need to do to kill an Astartes, hell the Imperium wouldn't need them.
But it got vastly better with later books and an overall better written and consistent lore Dan Abnett could orientate on.

CI- CI-CIAPHUS CAIN next. Admittedly, "the Last Chancers" was my intro to WH40K, but the Ciaphus Cain series was what ultimately got me into WH40K, since I was done reading thru the Flashman Papers by George MacDonald Fraser, and I was roaring for MOAR. Now I'd kinda want a Ciaphas review, especially since you commented on the Eisenhorn cover that didn't quite make sense, since Ciaphas' covers are basically just propaganda posters of how the people see him (i.e. he refuses to use a bolt pistol yet almost ever cover has him using one), but if that little detail's forgotten, the covers make no sense.
Hells, even just googling his name has the question 'Is Ciaphas Cain a primarch?' is the second question

As someone who’s read two of Cains books, I think the funniest parts is when he’s thinking to himself, such as when they were going through the Ice Caves and when Cain believed it was best to turn back, which is what he wanted, another guard was like “hold on, I think-“ which Cain wanted to throttle the guy just for that if they were alone.

I recommend everyone to read/listen to Angel Exterminatus, it’s genuinely one of the best Horus Heresy books if you ask me. I’d go with the audiobook personally as it adds a lot of flair. I’ll expand a few reasons below:
Firstly, it’s primarily focused on the Iron Warriors and the Emperor’s Children. Seeing the stark contrast between the two legions is enjoyable to see, especially given the rapid descent into madness the Emperor’s Children have gone down. We get some pretty cool fight scenes within the book from boarding battles, space battles, a siege and a few other smaller skirmishes. There’s a nice dynamic between Perturabo and his Trident, as well as between Fulgrim and Perturabo. The book also focuses on a Loyalist strike team of Iron Hands, a Salamander and a Raven Guard who managed to flee Istavan who’s goal is to get vengeance on the traitors. All in all, a fantastic book with a pretty good twist, it’s narrated brilliantly and has some pretty likeable characters all things considered. Also, Perturabo’s and Fulgrim’s voices are by far my favourite depictions

@@Makarislethal I think I prefer Cain more, although I’m only on the second Eisenhorn book. You get a little more attached to the side characters Cain hangs around with like how Majorkill mentioned the side characters are kinda not fleshed out in this. Also while the investigation stuff and inquisition stuff is interesting I kinda like the balancing act Cain performs where he is always against crazy odds, but he knows he has to keep public image while keeping himself alive.

I also highly recommend the Ciaphas Cain novels, I just picked up the first audiobook 3 days ago and I'm done, now I'm on the second book.
I'm enjoying the light heart humor of Ciaphas more than the Gaunt Ghosts books.
    Here's an example
Ciaphas: The inquisition resent it when other people use threats or bribery as its a tool they prefer to monopolize.
Inquisitior: This is not true as we are righteous servants of the emperor and above such behavior as resentment.
The joke here is the Inquisitior doesn't omit bribery and threats. It's small jokes like this sprinkled everywhere which makes it a fun listen/read.

      Ciaphas: WHAT???

Really enjoyed the Eisenhorn, Ravenor and Bequin books as well as the Necron Audiobooks too. Good writing, plots and the Necron ones have a pretty humorous vibe going on.

I will say this. This book series was my first Warhammer product ever. A Vampire the Masquerade friend had been telling me about his character in a Dark Heresy game, and I'd asked about the setting eventually I asked what would be a good novel to start with and this is what he recommended. I've never looked back. And to this day Inquisition is on my top tier list of favorite factions just for how interesting they are.

I finished the audio books of eisenhorn a few weeks back and want a change of pace before I do ravener. So I would recommend brutal and kunnin. It is about orks attacking a forge world and is amazing. The super logic of the machanicus trying to use logic staratiges against orks and failing hard is funny as hell. Well written and read would recommend next time you want something in the background.

Dan Abnett is an amazing writer and the first author I recommend when people ask where to start reading 40k novels. He always starts kind of slow, but by the last 1/3, or so, of the book I become so enthralled I have to finish the book in that sitting.
Eisenhorn, Ravenor, and Gaunt's Ghosts are all amazing series and I love Mr. Abnett's interpretations of the 40k universe.

The Eisenhorn Omnibus was my first dip into the Warhammer 40k universe. And man o man was it such a good set of books... I jumped right into the Ravenor Omnibus, and then the Bequin one (first two books) some time after that. I would highly recommend any person who likes Sci-fi with a dark twist to get started with the Eisenhorns books, even if you are not into Warhammer 40k yet. I can assure you of one thing though, that if you do get stuck in, you will never look back!

I honestly laughed when I heard Toby make Ubbe Amos scream "ISSARRRRRRRRRRRIEL" or the hint of annoyance in Amos's voice to a desk clock chimming at the mention of demon names. "It keeps doing -that-" Toby Longworth is a spectacular narrarator and honestly, the only voice I can now hear for both Eisenhorn and Garro.

I came here for the Cain comments and they didn’t disappoint. I’d also recommend titanicus and double eagle. Both are Abnett stand alone books but you’d be surprised at who you meet in them if you’ve read the ghosts series. He’s arguably the best author black library has in the way he’s created in own mini-verse in the setting.

I feel like Magos carries forward some of the best bits of Abnett's writing from Eisenhorn and Ravenor. You have developed individual characters, and inter-character interactions, but you also see Eisenhorn exclusively (more or less) from their perspective.
An enormously powerful and determined force, but one contained in the form you find him in at the end of Hereticus.
It also draws together threads from enough stories to really give the good pay-off from Abnett's detective fiction throughout the Ravenor series, while retaining a deep person-driven story.
Definitely recommend you jump straight into it.
And then just start the bequin novels....

Honestly the point about the villains/and in my case book endings is a thing i've noticed with abbnet when starting to read gaunts ghosts/eisenhorn both
it's a recurring theme where even if they flesh them out at all, they kinda just end and in worst case you get no info beyond "gaunt charges big bad evil guy" and next the battle's over book done

  • @meanderingshade

What I loved about the Eisenhorn trilogy is that "street level" or "pedestrian/civilian" look at the 40k setting away from the wars and battlefields. They really get you into the setting at a human and relatable level of context and what life on different worlds of the Imperium and different strata of social standing can be like.
With those points in mind I'd like to recommend the Enforcer Trilogy (Crossfire/Legacy/Blind... or the omnibus Enforcer.) by Matthew Farrer that follow the exploits of Adeptus Arbites officer Shira Calpurnia.
The trilogy starts off as she arrives on the planet of her new posting as Arbitor Senioris and wastes no time in getting right into the action.
A bad-ass female lead, action, investigation, social and religious conflict, crime and punishment. Hell, the individual books even have awesome cover art from Clint Langley.
I'm planning on reading them again soon. I hadn't been much of a reader for quite a while, it slipped by the wayside. But while I'd taken a bit of a hobby break I picked it up again, since October I've read 5 novels, 1 novella and 3 short story collections all Necromunda based (These can be a bit swingy with some released around the old edition of the game and newer books released for the current edition of the game, so narratively the themes and setting information can be a bit off between the older and newer books).
I've just taken a bit of a break from the Necromunda books and started getting into the Warhammer: Crime series of books; just finished the Sanction & Sin short story collection and just started Bloodlines, all pretty good so far.
Thanks for putting out awesome, interesting and entertaining content on the regular dude, take care.

Honestly I think the glaring issues in the eisenhorn actually serve a purpose. He very slowly becomes a radical but if he had more knowledge of how his opponents had fallen to chaos then perhaps he would have been more careful. His lack of perspective adds to story and also baits us into believing what he's doing is more justified than it really is sometimes. I wish there were some side stories that fleshed out the villains more but over all I dont have many problems with the eisenhorn books.

Hard to tell which series would be my favorite, if one can name them, I have probably read them (at least until Primaris appearance, still working on getting to that part of lore), notable good ones include Ciaphas Cain, Gaunt's Ghosts, Space Marine Battles, Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Ultramarines, the 2 eldar ''Path of'' as well. Oh oh, Cain should be great for next review (if time allows).

Eisenhorn was my entry point into 40K. I still remember being in that barnes and noble, browsing Sci-fi, and coming across the cover. Never read Dan Abnett. Never read 40K up until that point.
I was blown away with the first chapter. That was fifteen, maybe 16 years ago, and I'm STILL balls deep in 40K.
Huge shoutout to Dan Abnett, imo one of the best writers of the era.

I'm currently knee deep in the Eisenhorn Omnibus and enjoying the hell out of it. Overall kind of makes me think space cop action story, but for some reason I could see Eisenhorn being played by Peter Cushing circa the Hammer horror movies.

I read the Eisenhorn trilogy after coming from the cain series and the gaunts ghosts books and was not disappointed at all.
It hurt when some of the characters you got to know from book one died on screen in the last book and Eisenhorn just having to keep going and deal with it was soulripping.
Please review the cain series next
