Mayweather's father hid his chin behind his shoulder against Leonard early in their fight, so Leonard pulverized his body. Mayweather Jr. could not play defense first against Leonard, Hearns, Duran or Hagler. Every one of them was an excellent boxer, had a killer instinct and the punches to fulfill that instinct.

Nobody goes toe to toe with prime Duran, so Leonard lost a decision. Floyd Jr. isn't going toe to toe with anybody. He's defense first. He doesn't have the length that Hearns had to keep Leonard at a distance. Hearns was winning until Leonard went after him and broke him down. I must agree with Ray. Taking nothing away from Mayweather Jr. I agree that Floyd Jr. would be in a world of hurt against Leonard, Hearns, Hagler or Duran. The Sugar Man is absolutely right in my humble opinion.
One thing that everyone is forgetting, Floyd has a higher ring IQ then every single one of them. If ANYONE could find a weakness to exploit against those guys it would be Mayweather. Floyd may not seem like the brightest individual in real life, but inside the ring he has an IQ rivaled probably only by Ali and Pep. None of the Fab Four set traps like him, they all made slightly more mistakes, and they (this has been established as statistically true) all were less efficient punchers. To be clear, I would pick all of them slightly over Floyd to win (except Hagler, Floyd couldn't beat him), but to say that Floyd couldn't compete nor have a chance at winning is crazy. He was more technically sound than all of them. The only one he would probably never beat is Hagler because he never even fought in that weight class.

I mean it's not like 147 pounders 30 years ago were hitting much harder than today. Especially with the way today's athlete has evolved. Keep in mind that Floyd has never really shown a weak chin. Any time that he's been rocked it's always by guys who could've rocked anyone, and he always maintained composure.

@John CameronAs a former amateur boxer, I must express my opinion to you. Just as Sugar Ray knocked Floyd's dad out, he'd do the same to Floyd Jr. The pressure of Hagler and Duran, he would not have been able to avoid for ten rounds. Floyd could not take the constant pounding they would have put on him. As for Hearns. Look at his battle in Leanard 1. Mayweather would not be able to take the power those guys would have brought. I agree. Hearns was a freak of nature for welter weight, scary indeed. In that fight Leonard won my respect forever. I love how boxers used to fight in their prime and not be worried for the 0. Hearns-Leonard, probably the best prime welter weight fight among undefeated fighters. Trinidad-De la Hoya did it too. in welter jr. Chavez-Taylor and in featherweight Sánchez-Gómez. Looking back at those fights and fighters and comparing them to the circus of the Mayweather-Paquiao and the projected Crawford-Spence (if it ever happens) makes no sense. Leonard in his prime was the total package. Power, speed, charisma, boxing IQ. I think Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Aaron Pryor, were all generational talents we won’t see again. People easily forget about guys like Pernell Whitaker and Julio Cesar Chavez, or the Bodysnatcher, Mike McCallum because of recency bias. There are levels in boxing.
And back in the day, you had great fighters in almost every weight class. Remember azumah nelson/ jeff fenech. Pryor/Arguello. Now a days, welterweights and heavywieghts, are the best weight class. However, I am looking forward to lomachenko/ lopez. I think this could be best fight we've had for a while. And junior lightweight is smokin with some good fighters. I want to see all these guys fight each other and don't go up in weight. If they fight each other, junior lightweight is gonna be special.
Back then the fighters were much tougher! Just like the times they lived in! The lifestyle and life they had to live made them tougher. Poverty and hate can fuel the soul and fist to unlimited bounds! Just not the same for the fighters today. They don’t even go 15 rounds anymore!
Doesn't mean they can't go 15 rounds though. Athletic performance has increased greatly since the seventies and eighties, most records have been shattered several times over. That applies to boxing too, the idea that fighters were better in the old days is just a myth imo.
@@da324 Wilder isn't very technically skilled, but his height and power would be huge advantages. He'd knock out any of those fighters if he landed flush, just like he does today.

Sugar Ray is right He definitely wasn't beating Leonard or Hagler Him fighting Duran would've been like fighting Pacquiao in his prime And Hearns probably takes him with his reach and power alone
Nah. Floyd would DOMINATE Roberto Duran. Floyd would beat Hearns. Diego Corales was a great tall fighter with reach and power, Floyd chopped him down like a tree. He’s just a level better than those guys. They relied on their natural physical ability. Floyd could do that, but he could also set guys up and use if brain to strip guys of what they like to do. Pacquiao and Mosley were both completely neutralized by Floyd because of his ability to recognize what they were trying to set up and nullifying it with his positioning. That’s next level stuff. Leonard is one of my favorites, but Floyd is better. I’m sorry. Leonard got by on his immense physical talent, but as he aged a bit he wasn’t quite the same. Guys like Mayweather and Bernard Hopkins are so cerebral, they can still beat great fighters when their physical gifts erode.

But I’m gonna call your bluff, I think you’re a casual and can’t really back up anything your saying with supporting evidence. Corales was a great fighter who died too young during his career. Had he kept fighting, his career achievements would very likely have been comparable. He had very good power, he had the height and length and coordination to give people problems. He lost badly to Floyd, but we’ve seen what Floyd really turned out to be. Not a bad loss. Floyd is not a light puncher. He had a much higher K.O. percentage before he developed hand problems. Still he punched with enough pop to make people respect him. Pauli Malignaggi had no power, guys could walk him down and push him back. You never see anyone do that to Floyd. Pacquiao got popped with a straight right in the first round against Mayweather and it kept him from mounting more offense. He didn’t like what’s he felt, and didn’t want to feel it again. Canelo was much physically bigger and stronger than Floyd, and he has a great chin. But he didn’t didn’t just walk through Floyd’s punches to land either. UA-cam both Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto discussing Floyd’s power. They both said the same thing, that he’s not a huge puncher but he’s a sharp puncher and he can stun you. He hits hard enough, especially if you don’t see the punch coming. To be honest the part about Floyd not being able to hurt Tommy Hearns or Duran part of your comment let me know that you’re that you don’t understand boxing. Hearns had a weak chin. Duran can be outboxed. Sugar Ray didn’t really hurt him badly, but he completely outboxed him and made him quit. Floyd is an even better pure boxer than Leonard. Floyd vs. Duran would look a heck of a lot like Floyd vs. Canelo. Floyd has a excellent chin, Leonard wouldn’t knock him out. Floyd would outbox Leonard. Hagler is a 160 pound fighter, Floyd never competed at 160. Though if the fought at a catch weight, as great as Hagler was Floyd was fast enough, smart enough, accurate enough, and defensively sound enough to outbox him. Even if the guys are your heroes and you hate Floyd, don’t let your heart get in the way of reality. Having competed myself for 14 years, I trust my ability to break down a fight and understand what they can and can’t do. Floyd is too slick. I get your point Tina, but I guess it all depends on how you look at it. You see, Duran's best years were at LW. He dominated (more like terrorizing) the division for a much longer time than Hagler did at MW. The only one to fight him at WW was Leonard. Their first 2 fights were at WW & the 3rd was at MW. For me, it was the Fab Five, not Four. They have to include Wilfredo Benitez, who beat Duran, went to distance with Hearns (and knocked him down) and almost went to distance (15 rounds, not 12) with Leonard. Sadly, he never fought Hagler, which it would've been an awesome fight. I think that, of all of the Fab. . . Four, the hardest opponent for Floyd would've been Duran. Floyd's hardest fights were against brawlers who took the fight out of him, like Maidana, Castillo and even Cotto. Duran had more than enough brawling and also ring generalship like no other.
Mike McCallum, Carlos Palomino, Donald Curry, Alexis Arguello and many other fighters who could move up and down from light and welter to middleweight would destroy Mayweather.

A massive difference with today's boxers They don't have more then 2 or 3 fights a year someone even 1 fight. Them old skool fighters sometimes had 10 plus fights a years true warriors
@@rickwilliams4573 That's a lie...Floyd never beat or fought a Great Fighter in their prime. De La Hoya, Mosely, Pacman (who was just koed by Marquez) were all well past it.
Mayweather would have ducked them all. He's spent his career carefully handpicking opponents, making sure they weren't in their prime and making sure that everything was in his favour everytime he fought. That doesn't make him a great Champion in my eyes.
Easily very Easily and not just the Fab Benitez,Aaron Pryor both would handle Floyd easily. With the Hawk probably stopping Floyd. He wouldn't win a round against a prime Benitez!!!
Leonard showed up and fought the best. Hagler once, Hearns twice and Duran 3 times. (He also TKOed Mayweather Sr.) Floyd Jr. can't claim that kind of guts.
“Hagler whooped your ass Leonard. And if the fight would’ve lasted a full 15 rds., he’d a still been whoopin yo ass...” 😂😂😂 ...A spin off of Harlem Nights!!!!
He really lost vs hagler. May weather would lose all and sugar was in the crowd in all those guys fights he was always in the stands watching a angle , he would make sure he did not face any of them . He would pick Andre the giant over them
Nah...he won that...even Hagler knew as witnessed by the look on his face in the final seconds. Hagler was the greatest middle weight of all time despite that loss....
Exactly. He beat way more champions, had a much longer and successful career at the elite level and didn't get knocked out as a broke and desperate old man. Plus he retired undefeated with all his faculties. So yeah, NEVER put Floyd's name in a conversation with them. It's disrespectful to Floyd. Well maybe Hagler but the rest of them? Hell no.
@@AWesker99 Is disrespectful for Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, and Duran, the four were by far better boxer than Mayweather in his prime. Don´t be delusional bro.
The only one of the four, pretty boy might have beaten was Duran. Floyd loves super aggressive fighters, so I’ll give him Duran. The other three are no fools and will surprise his jaded, pretty ass. Oh I’m sorry he changed his name to “money “ to sound cooler
At Welterweight and Middleweight there are 5 fighters Floyd Mayweather would not have beaten. Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler! Just my OPINION!
Erik Morales in his prime had the right style to beat mayweather, and of course the Hawk, and Hagler would of destroyed Mayweather. Hagler was not in his prime when he fought Ray and I"m not convinced he lost that fight either, I give a tie if anything.
He was their with Morales, Barrera, Pac-Man, Corrales, during their prime time and he didn't fight them. Pac-Man and Corrales he should have fought years earlier than he did.
With Hagler v Leonard, it comes down to how you score fights. If you like the footwork of hit and move and run, over and over, then you liked Leonard. If you think the guy stalking down and going toe to toe is the winner, then Hagler.
Benitez would have been two counter punchers, but Pryor would have been all over him, not giving him a chance to breath and nowhere to run.. and then you have Alexis Argello... now that would have been a good fight.. he might have beaten Alexis on points, but just one mistake, and he would have gotten knocked out..
Mayweather vs Hagler: Absolutely no way. He'd hit Hagler but couldn't hurt him. Hagler would pursue him and KO with power from distance. Mayweather vs Duran: Absolutely no chance. He would never be able to hit Duran who, like Hagler would pursue and KO, but with power up close; using tricks, feints, and body shots to expose him. Mayweather vs Leonard: No. He could prolly go the distance but Leonard would easily score more blows with his faster hands and footwork. Mayweather vs Hearns: This one I give him a slight chance. If he could use his defensive skills avoid the big man for the first few rounds, it's is possible he could wear him down and score enough to win on points. Still, it's only a slight chance. The much bigger Hearns would prolly overpower him early and KO, like he did to Duran. Bottom line, Mayweather has defense but lacks the power to hurt these guys. It was much more competitive in that era, with 15 rounds, more fights, and other guys like Benitez, Moore, Barkley, etc., who were highly skilled. Too many good fighters at once. It was just an epic time for boxing in those weight classes and probably won't happen again.
Really spot on analysis! I fully agree that with Mayweather's superb defense, there's just not enough power in his offense to keep these guys at bay. They'd walk thru his punches and attack, attack and attack, especially Hagler and Duran.
Ain't nobody walking through floyd punches especially if you talking about before he broke his hands that's a narrative shane mosley said out his own mouth floyd hits just as hard as canelo and the best he ever fought ask andre berto he just doesnt overexert himself he's conservative and concise
@@NewAgeSlaves sorry brother but I will not put Mosley and definitely not Berto in the same breath as Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Leonard. I saw a small Pacquiao hit Mosley with a mediocre punch that sent him to the canvas, so his view is practically irrelevant.
@@NewAgeSlaves I just can't see Mayweather keeping Duran and Hagler off him with a smothering and relentless body attack. I don't see the same power that you speak of that can defeat a Hearns, just don't see that at all! Sugar Ray is just too strong and explosive to keep at bay. Sorry, I just don't see Mayweather beating any of them. I grew up watching boxing in the 80's and 90's, I just don't see Mayweather beating any of them. These were 15 round fighters that were strong until the end, they were used to being battered and still going strong in the 15th round. One thing that everyone is forgetting, Floyd has a higher ring IQ then every single one of them. If ANYONE could find a weakness to exploit against those guys it would be Mayweather.
@@oldboy5001 So, you think Deontay Wilder would beat Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Holmes, Shavers, and Tyson, right?
@@da324 Wilder isn't very technically skilled, but his height and power would be huge advantages. He'd knock out any of those fighters if he landed flush, just like he does today.
Indeed - Fighters are made and not born. That is why most of the champions are no longer from the USA. We have it all so we have lost the "eye of the tiger". People in Russia today grow up scrapping like guys from the 1950's. Sonny Liston types only exist in the pen. Did you think Little Ray was going to be a boxer after his commercial's? There is a reason many of the first heavyweight champions were Irish after the Great Potato Famine.
@@oldboy5001 Well, I watched those guys while growling up and I don't think he lasts 5 rounds with any of them. We saw what kind of trouble he had with someone who has a bit of boxing skill in his last fight. He's a one dimensional fighter and that was exposed against Fury.
total legend
Sugar Ray is right
He definitely wasn't beating Leonard or Hagler
Him fighting Duran would've been like fighting Pacquiao in his prime
And Hearns probably takes him with his reach and power alone
I don't agree with you, but you spell out a great debate. In other words... you pull out good points.
When you get to Ireland, meet up with me for a beer!
Brand New I’m sorry but you can’t compare Diego talent to any of the fab 4. Tommy and haggler would have hurt floyd with their power and their is nothing floyd could do to them as floyd has never had the punching power. A fully motivated and in prime shape Duran would have also destroyed floyd with that style he fought
@@juanio7036 Lol. Dude, you can believe what you want. It’s only your opinion. They would all probably lose to Floyd and the fights would look like what we’ve seen before from Floyd against De La Hoya, Cotto, Canelo, Corales, Mosley, and Marquez. Y’all want to hold on to your heroes, I’m dealing in reality.
@@brandnew9834 hearns couldn’t beat haggler. Mayweather beats em all. The complete package. The greatest always rise to their generation and have to dominate within their own generation. The fact the Leonard/Duran/hearns/hagler could not seepage themselves apart from one another says a lot. Some people just want to believe the good ole days were better.
Hagler, Leonard, Hearns Duran vs Mayweather. Come on man! No doubt, all 4 beat Maweather, hands down. I could extrapolate on the various technical dynamics, but it would be boring. Who's the best of the four of them? It's not really a legitimate question. Who's the better artist? Van Gogh, Dega', Renoir, Da Vinci?
Your argument might sound good, especially to Mayweather haters, However it totally flawed on the merits. Any extrapolation done on your so called technical dynamics would not only be boring, it would be based totally on SPECULATION as opposed to the reality of the FACTS.
Boxing is not painting that is based solely on arbitrary aesthetics, in other words the beauty of a painting is in the eye of the beholder. Boxing has real data to measure how good a fighter is compared to other fighters, this data is based on FACTS such as: Number of fights won, number of fights lost, punches per round, punch connection, punches missed, % of punches landed, % of punches avoided, etc etc...
None of the Fab 4 remained undefeated throughout their careers, none of the fab 4 had defensive abilities of Mayweather according to the OBJECTIVE stats (facts), none of the fab 4 careers lasted an entire generation (20 years) like Mayweather's, and except maybe for Marvelous Hagler none of the Fab 4 had as many successive title defenses, even if all the stats I mentioned was equal among the fab4 and Mayweather, according to the most important stat of all, none of the fab 4 remained UNDEFEATED. It's kind of funny. While they were still fighters, the other 3 used to say the same 3 about Ray and didn't consider him a "real" fighter (although he was probably the greatest of the 4, at least at WW or JMW; Duran may have been the best P4P). SRL, especially earlier in his career didn't fight with his opponents, he just beat them......Similar to Floyd.
bflo1000 all of them beat Duran. How is he the best pound for pound when all 3 beat him? Nothing silly about that?
I get your point Tina, but I guess it all depends on how you look at it. You see, Duran's best years were at LW. He dominated (more like terrorizing) the division for a much longer time than Hagler did at MW. The only one to fight him at WW was Leonard. Their first 2 fights were at WW & the 3rd was at MW. Duran fought Hagler at MW, & both Hearns & Benitez were at Jr MW, 154. Plus Duran's older than the others, and was arguably past his prime for some of those fights.
He was far more aggressive than floyd. He stopped Benitez and Hearns.
