More boxers really need to take note from fighters like Hagler who leave the ring "prematurely." You can tell just by this interview that he left at the right time. He's still sharp and has his health. You see some of these other fighters and it's really sad the state that they're in.
Michael Faber agreed, I see fighters even from his era, and they sound punch drunk, I heard guys like Leonard really declined considerably and have slurred speaches.

Mr Hagler in my opinion (not that it counts for much) is the best middleweight fighter I have ever seen. I would put him up against any middleweight/super middleweight fighter in the past 30 years and my money would be on Hagler. I look back to the era when Hagler boxed and the boxers who fought at that time. They would have fought anyone to PROVE they where the best. Not like today, money talks and avoiding a challenge is in there best interest. Thank you Mr Hagler for the fantastic memories and I take great pleasure in watching your fights regularly on you tube.
Jason Grimbley very true my friend I’d argue that fact all day and every fighter today could learn so much of how to live boxing by studying marvellous marv 🥊
I wouldn't say he slammed anyone; he just told the truth. That was Hagler for you. Honest, hardworking, spoke his mind. They don't make 'em like that any more.
I met him when I driving for Strawberries record stores. I was at the Brockton store. There was a" Closed for 20 minutes" sign on the door. I knocked and got the managers attention. I brought in my first load. I asked why he was closed. He pointed to a man and his kids towards the middle of the store. "I give Marvin and his kids some quiet time when he comes in. He's got special order pieces in today's delivery". He was just being a Dad out with his kids. I hurried to get everything in. No boxes are marked as special so his order could be in any box. Finished up and hung out. The other people in the store also respected Mr. Hagler and his kids. The manager walked over to Mr. Hagler and asked if they were ready. He mentioned his order was at the register. Signed autograph for a couple of kids before he left. The manager said "Marvin, My driver's a big fan also". He had his hands full but gave me a genuine "Thanks" as he and the kids left. A Dad spending time with his kids.

@@fernandowachs935 SAD, BUT, TRUE BROTHER. MMH WENT TOO SOON. MONZON WAS A TORTURED SOUL. RING LEGENDS. MY ANALYSIS, HAGLER HAD A GRANITE CHIN. MONZON WOULD HAVE HAD TO WIN A DECISION? TOUGH CALL!🥊
Marvin Hagler avenged all his draws, and losses with the exception when he was robbed from Milk & Cookies Flashy Show Boater SRL. Hagler never knocked down in his career. Even when he fought Juan Roldan, that was a complete slip, and light knudge on the behalf of Roldan. Hagler was a complete hardcore fighter. Great chin, and punching power for a Middleweight. Amberdexterious favoring the Sothpa stance of course. Marvin was able to adapt to any style in which this gave him the upper advantage against punchers, boxers, and speed demons. Hagler dictated the pace of every fight, and he had great ring general ship second to none. I remember seeing him in an interview before he fought Hearns. Hagler said if he gets through Tommy's best punch, he then knew he would have Hearns licked. In which he did. Hearns delivered that wicked right cross that would flatten 9 out of every 10 opponents. Hearns wobbled Hagler, and managed to give Marvin a nasty gash that would make others quit on their stool, but The Marvelous One as usual was able to overcome the Hitmans punching power, and comeback to conquer Hearns. And when Marvin battled The Hands Of Stone. They fought a full 15 Rounds. In this fight The Marvelous One used his wits, and outclassed Duran to retain the Middleweight championship. And a great performance from Duran too. And also a great performance on the behalf of Hearns for giving us boxing fans the best 8 1/2 grueling minutes in 1985,and perhaps the best exciting fight in the decade of the 1980s! Indeed I tip my hat to The Man, The Myth, The Marvelous One!
That was one of the most brutal fights I've ever saw... I don't know how Hagler can even speak clearly after some of them wars. I seen the punches that Hagler and Mugabi traded... 99% of the middleweight divisions would have been knocked out cold. GGG & Bhop would have been the only two in recent memory that could take what they were dishing out.
My favorite all time fighter. A man of fierce pride, indomitable will, and always underrated skill. Whose the last great fighter you've seen adept at fighting orthodox or southpaw? Hagler. Whose the last great fighter who could say they beat arguably three of the 10 best fighters of their generation (yeah, I think he beat Leonard)? Hagler. The man remains CRIMINALLY underrated. The single best 'lunch pail' fighter of my lifetime.
I can't really remember hagler in real trouble in any of his fights and I think that says alot when you consider a power puncher sometimes might get caught with one because he's loading up on his punch and he's open to getting hit somewhere. Like that "1" moment hearns stunned him for a brief moment. One of the most mentally tough fighters ever.
In living memory? What's wrong with watching old fight films and reading? Hagler isn't fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Sugar Ray Robinson; and there are reams of film of Robinson.
@@denisewelchfan Yeah, in terms of Style, Hagler is more like Joe Louis than Mike Tyson. Although there is his leaping hook. Joe Louis never really did that, but Tyson did..
What a truly wonderful and lovely fella he was. So sad he has passed away. Marvelous Marvin haggler may now be gone...but he will live on in the hearts of those who watched and appreciated him and his fights and his heart will live on in film forever.
+Mike Johnson, Hagler didn't have to take the fight. He could have laughed at him and said 'You waited too long. I'm an old man now.' He didn't because he wasn't an old man and he thought he could beat Leonard. Or did he know he couldn't win and took the fight just for the money? That's not the Hagler we know. Also, you've implied that this was a trick that Leonard played often. Are you suggesting he didn't fight Duran at his peak, or Hearns? He did fight them at their peak, and he beat them (for my money he should have got the decision in the first Duran fight even having made the brave but unwise decision to fight Duran toe-to-toe. When he fought the rematch the Leonard way, he not only beat him but humilated him into quitting).
+xpat73, Leonard would soon have your respect if you had the guts to step in the ring with him - even today I know where my money would be. Leonard was a welterweight while Hagler was a full-blown middleweight. This was why Leonard didn't take the fight as early as you (and Hagler) would have wanted it. Then it wouldn't have been a fair fight. Then it would have been 'easy'. Hagler had no option but to wait until Leonard gained the weight naturally. Always the argument can be made that Hagler was, by then, past his best and this may be true but, as I've said elsewhere, Hagler didn't think he was past it. Then what is this you say about 'pitter patter crap'? That's the same 'crap' he used against his other opponents. What do you expect a fighter to do - change their style to an unfamilier one so they're more likely to lose? Leonard had made that mistake before against Duran. It might make for a more exciting bout for the fans but the wise fighter sticks to what they do best. Incidentally, it was Hagler who changed his style that night, switching to fight orthodox, something he'd never done in his entire career. Why do you think he did this if not because Leonard had psyched him out? I think Hagler was trying to play Leonard at his own game, trying to show that he could also be a 'showman'; it was as wrong for him to change his style as it would have been for Leonard to have tried to slug it out with Hagler. Yet despite this, there's nowhere to hide in that ring and Hagler had his chances. In the 9th , when he finally caught up with Leonard, and rocked him against the ropes and had him covering up briefly, Leonard shocked him with some of that 'pitter patter crap', driving Hagler backwards with a sensational combination that made the crowd roar in amazement. What Leonard did that night was unprecedented and to see someone call it pathetic, well, you just don't know your boxing.
+Keldor D'Antrell I think the point, for most people and for Hagler, still to this day, is that he did beat Leonard fairly obviously despite what the Judges said. This all added to the feeling he had through out his career that he was never shown the respect he deserved based on his actual boxing achievements.
+Keldor D'Antrell hey K I respeck what you are saying a.k.a birdman sandunsky. lol.. tell me the age of them an watch the fight as a sugar fan then as a hagaler fan..I really think sugar out smarter an out boxed him.....at the end of the fight Marvin pranced around the ring trying to win a little more votes..he never did that not one timer in his whole boxing career... he knew he lost that fight....holla back... thanks
Great champion, no regrets and nothing to regret either. He was never loved in his career, maybe he was too much of a fighter and not enough of an entertainer. Even to this day the public can forget the last fight or two of every champion except him. But he made his money, he beat everyone that wanted to fight him and now he still has his health and his loyal fans and the future to look forward to. Godspeed Marvin, there is no middleweight who could have ever gotten past you at your best
I think Marvin enjoyed his later years, he seemed like he was in good health, and he had his mental faculties, and he seemed happy and content. R.I.P. Marvin Hagler
Hey Marvin, Your greatest middle weight to ever box. Lenard didn't beat you and you had the class to let boxing go after that fight and not get in to the gutter of the boxing world. Hagler came up the hard way. He didn't have the push of an olympic medal behind him like Leonard did (no disrespect to Leonard) so he had to battle his way through the trenches and take on tough, dangerous fights early in his career to build a name for himself. He and Leonard fought for their first world titles on the same day, and he got robbed blind against Antifourmo ( sorry I know I spelled that wrong). He was considered the uncrowned middleweight champ for while before he confirmed it with his destruction of Alan Mintor. Hagler is a living legend.

Grew up in Boston listening to the Sunday night "Sports Huddle" with Eddie, Mark, and Jim. They would often have Marvin on as a guest - and he would stay on for several hours, chatting and taking calls. Marvin must have been about 24 at the time...from across town in Brockton, Mass. Always ALWAYS came off as a stand-up, polite, decent man. We all loved being witness to his rise to fame and fortune. If anyone deserved it, it was Marvin. Stunned and saddened that he passed so young. But he will live on in my memory vividly, as long as I breathe...RIP, Champ.
I loved watching Marvin fight.....what a tactician.....he would work other fighter and just 'break them down" by the 5th-6th round you could tell the end was near. One thing about almost all of Haglers opponents was this: Almost everyone he fought was never the same afterwards fighting-wise.....Their careers just went south after Hagler...virtually every single one he fought after that first Antofermo fight....
Also no fighter ever beat marvelous Marvin in a rematch sure Hagler lost to Monroe & possibly Watts but in a rematch, MARVELOUS destroyed them and MOST* who had been beaten the 1st time by Hagler did NOT* what a return. Sugar Ray Seales, ANTEFURMO, HAMSHO and Oblergines..all BRAVE , VERY TOUGH BOXERS ..BUT were obviously soundly beaten 2 times worse in rematch.
Leonard took on Hagler, and was the better boxer. Leonard was the best welterweight to ever step into a boxing ring. He also could fight middleweight, as he did against Hagler, and beat him. If there would have been a rematch, the result would have been the same.
I respect how he gave Duran, Mugabi, and Hearns props for trying to TAKE the belt. While Leonard was in there for the belt too, but he ran inside the ring. Still can't believe there was no rematch and still can't believe Leonard won.
Leonard didn't just run leonard was a tactician /a great thinker in the ring.leonard was also smaller than hagler/ he basically beat hagler to the punch.kind of like when muhammad ali beat foreman george was so strong./he threw a lot while punches at ali.but when it mattered ali beat george to the punch.i think that had george been a little more discipline/ patient.he could've beat ali.
@@anthonytobias5459 this isnt saying hagler wasnt skilled but george foreman definitely was, do you seriously think a fighter could take the championship at 45 and make 5 successful defences (6 if you include when he got robbed against shannon briggs) if he wasnt skilled? go watch a breakdown of his tactics or better yet go rewatch his complete dismantling of joe frazier who is one of the greatest and most skilful and talented heavyweights of all time, then tell me he wasnt skilful
Keldor D'Antrell I don't recall Hagler being embarrassed and quitting versus Ray. Perhaps you are confusing him with Duran. Leonard fought Marvin at the end of Hagler's career and he retired after that fight. He would have fought Ray in a rematch but that didn't transpire. Consequently, Hagler retired at the end of a hall of fame career.
@@el34glo59, I know about Duran's "No Mas" embarrassment. I'm not referring to that. I'm referring to Hagler being embarrassed by Ray Leonard in *their* fight and quitting the ring *afterwards*. I'm not saying that Hagler *admitted* he was embarrassed just that I think he was.
Depends on if you're voting with your heart or your head. Hagler let himself down, he did the same in his first title fight and again to Duran, not by losing but by failing to rise.
I love this man, i was in awe of him when i was young, i followed his career before the internet era by waiting at the newsagent for RIng and KO magazines, i read them cover to cover so many times, it is a great memory of mine and i cherish it, looking at this great man today he looks fit and strong, he makes so much sense in what he says about his beloved sport, magic days indeed.
Greatest middleweight of all time, a true warrior, in every sense of the word. No other fighter could have survived the onslaught that Tommy Hearns threw at him, a lesser man would have been kayoed. Truly robbed against Sugar Ray Leonard. What a match up Hagler v Monzon would have been.
Robbed? Leonard outboxed him and out pointed him ... He won that on points and outlanded him like 2:1 Marvin was the aggressor but he only won round 9 clearly ... The other 11 Leonard edged them all
Outlanded by 2-1 Medez Jorge??? Um no Sugar out landed him by 15 and Hagler out punched him by almost 200. You're supposed to win the title from the champ he didn't, it was a draw at best. Not one punch hurt Marvin, Leonard fought like a sissy IMO. He edged the 1st and last 10 seconds of the round then ran for the rest, Golden Boy gets victory like his tainted one against Hearns. They all ducked 'the body snatcher' though so although i'm a big Marvelous fan there's always that doubt...
Marvelous Marvin Hagler - one of my favorite fighters ever! He showed up in shape, on weight and never gave anything less than 100%. Marvelous was a working man! And though I thought he beat Leonard, that decision was no robbery.
The Marvellous one is one of my boxing heroes. The working man personified. The hardest geezer of his generation. And as skilled as they come. I can't imagine a Middleweight born who could have beaten him.
So glad to see the champ still marvelous in physical and mental shape. Boxers like PBF make a lot of money, but most boxers are being USED to generate money for other people. One of the greats!
ewoe21 but Ray's punches did no damage to marvin's face unlike when tommy h gave the Marvelous one a nasty cut on his forehead and the crowd especially rooting for thomas h saw blood thinking the fight would favor him BUT the Marvelous One managed to sneak in a crushing right cross to the head of the hitman and when his knees wobbled, marvin went for the kill and presto he's down and out and the crowd loved it!!! that's boxing at its best!!!
I would have loved to see him fight Roy Jones in his prime when he was totally dominating the middle weight division. Yeah, Hagler was truly one of the best and most fear fight there ever was (in the middle weight division). Big time respect! Don't walk in the right with him unless you want brain damage.
I wish I saw these interviews I'm now just seeing of Marvelous He's genuine and straight forward, respectfully honest, and very humble and down to Earth
Most boxing professionals knew Hagler beat Leonard. Leonard would be losing a round big and then "flurry" the last 15 seconds and sway the judges to give him the round because that's the last thing the judges remembered in that round. Leonard invented that trick. Hearns knew he won and when he didn't get the decision, he was so disgusted, he QUIT boxing. I don't blame him. When boxing has reached the point of screwing a boxer like they did Hagler in that fight, it's time to leave.
Gen Eric Either you are blind or you know NOTHING about the art of pugilism! Sugar Ray kicked his ass all over the ring! He beat him inside and outside!!! And considering his poor sportsmanship AFTER HE LOST I wouldn't give him a rematch either!!! And in case you forgot SUGAR RAY KNOCKED HEARNS THA FUCK OUT!!!! That's when his ass should have quit!!!! The blather Hagler is talking here about Mayweather "being it it for the money" is pure nonsense: IT'S PRIZE FIGHTING DUH????? If he wasn't in it for the money he is a damned fool and should just go away and STFU!!!!!
Playthell Benjamin......Actually, there was a typo in my post. If you read the whole thing, you should have KNOWN it SHOULD have said, "HAGLER (NOT, HEARNS) knew he won and when he didn't get the decision, he was so disgusted, he QUIT boxing." So, my post STANDS, given this correction.
Playthell Benjamin Well you forgot that Hearns beat the crap out of SRL in the second fight and the judges gave it a draw. The judges gave SRL decisions and that's why so many people hate him. To say he beat Hagler around the ring is ludicrous. It was a split decision. SRL threw weak pitty pat punches and ran from Hagler. Hagler was the champ, not SRL. You are supposed to soundly beat the champ and if you score that fight correctly it was a draw. I know about the art, I have laced up gloves and been around boxing my whole life.
BIRISHPM.....Not true. Ali wouldn't give away a complete round and flurry at the end like Ray. Ali would still give a good accounting of himself during the round and flurry at the end, too. Ray would just rest the entire round until then end and flurry. Ali DID, however, invent the "rope and dope."
Hagler has the best knockout percentage of any middleweight in history. You can really only look at Sugar Ray Robinson as a better contender. Hagler is in the top 3 of all time.
+MPA2000 embarrassed??? That's regarded as one of the most controversial decisions of all time and on top of that srl waited until hagler showed signs of deteriorating before attempted to fight him.
Darth Vaader "just not blessed with as great genetics / DBC (damageable brain capacity) as Hagler." this proves my point exactly, because they dont have a great "dbc" they are are arguably lesser men physically, its not as much a knock on them as it is a compliment on hagler's fortitude.
Cloud Dweller LOL, Duran shed weight before this fight. He was over 200 lbs a month and a half before Leonard II. Duran's weakness wasn't in the ring, it was outside of it and it cost him some fights. When Duran trained like a champ, he was almost unbeatable.

Yes not only*special fighter but special person,a specialchampion.
I met MM Hagler & his 2 trainers briefly, in HIS warm-up room at 12 yrs old w/ my younger brother 8 & my father (a former, retired RI pro fighter himself), this was literally within 60 mins of Hagler entering the ring to DEFENDING his undisputed middleweight championship vs Wilfred Scypion in Providence, Rhode island...on HBO main event fight.

Hagler was the toughest man who ever laced up the gloves , not only the toughest but a masterful boxer
Amazing that he came from that era with real sluggers and he still looks so healthy mentally & physically. Good to see.

Marvin Hagler was the best Middleweight hands down!

The Marvelous One definetly one of a kind!

A thing of beauty
My favorite all time fighter. A man of fierce pride, indomitable will, and always underrated skill. Whose the last great fighter you've seen adept at fighting orthodox or southpaw? Hagler. The single best 'lunch pail' fighter of my lifetime.
+Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot for me he was the fiercest and greatest fighter ever and he beat leonard---
I can't really remember hagler in real trouble in any of his fights and I think that says alot when you consider a power puncher sometimes might get caught with one because he's loading up on his punch and he's open to getting hit somewhere. Like that "1" moment hearns stunned him for a brief moment. One of the most mentally tough fighters ever.

Leonard ducked Hagler and then fought with the pitter patter crap when Hagler was the downside of his career....pathetic. Hagler has my respect.
R u mad? Ray came out of retirement was 1 of the best come bks of all time u clown haha

Also no fighter ever beat marvelous Marvin in a rematch sure Hagler lost to Monroe & possibly Watts
but in a rematch, MARVELOUS destroyed them and MOST* who had been beaten the 1st time by Hagler did NOT* what a return.
Sugar Ray Seales, ANTEFURMO, HAMSHO and Oblergines..all BRAVE , VERY TOUGH BOXERS ..BUT were obviously soundly beaten 2 times worse in rematch.
Leonard took on Hagler, and was the better boxer. Leonard was the best

Robbed? Leonard outboxed him and out pointed him ... He won that on points and outlanded him like 2:1 Marvin was the aggressor but he only won round 9 clearly ... The other 11 Leonard edged them all

Not one punch hurt Marvin, Leonard fought like a sissy IMO. He edged the 1st and last 10 seconds of the round then ran for the rest, Golden Boy gets victory like his tainted one against Hearns. So glad to see the champ still marvelous in physical and mental shape. Boxers like PBF make a lot of money, but most boxers are being USED to generate money for other people.
One of the greats!
I heard Marvin Hagler is one of the few boxers who didnt go broke. Bless him & his family....
Leonard ran from this guy for years and then ran from a rematch too.
You know it
Benjamin Foster Don’t forget he also ran around the ring in the fight too. Sugar Ray Gump
Benjamin Foster say what you want about Ray, but he beat them all.
ewoe21 but Ray's punches did no damage to marvin's face unlike when tommy h gave the Marvelous one a nasty cut on his forehead and the crowd especially rooting for thomas h saw blood thinking the fight would favor him BUT the Marvelous One managed to sneak in a crushing right cross to the head of the hitman and when his knees wobbled, marvin went for the kill and presto he's down and out and the crowd loved it!!! that's boxing at its best!!!
blake bishop I’m not sure if he ducked Mccullan, or if he went after the tougher opponent in John Mugabi.
I would have loved to see him fight Roy Jones in his prime when he was totally dominating the middle weight division. Yeah, Hagler was truly one of the best and most fear fight there ever was (in the middle weight division). Big time respect! Don't walk in the right with him unless you want brain damage.
I wish I saw these interviews I'm now just seeing of Marvelous
He's genuine and straight forward, respectfully honest, and very humble and down to Earth
Marvin sold me on him after the Mugabi fight, I never doubted his marvelousness after that.
Title is a bit gratuitous. The interviewer wanted a slam but Hagler saw no need.
R.I.P. Marvelous Marvin Hagler 🙏👑❤
Good to hear Marvin still has his brains in order.lol!
Marvin can say what he wants... He's bad ass.
Roger Downes.....Actually, MY post is what happened.
Proof that a great champion can also be a great gentleman. RIP Marvelous One.
Believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST and be saved
Top 15 but not top 10
+Eternity Infinity at least top 10 in my mind. Perhaps top 5 "pound for pound"
+Antonio Uriel Gamboa greatest mw of all time he's easily top 10 arguably top 5
Hagler has the best knockout percentage of any middleweight in history. You can really only look at Sugar Ray Robinson as a better contender. Hagler is in the top 3 of all time.
+MPA2000 embarrassed??? That's regarded as one of the most controversial decisions of all time and on top of that srl waited until hagler showed signs of deteriorating before attempted to fight him.
marvelous looks and sounds marvelous, especially after all the wars he fought in, lesser men would have been vegetables by now
sigh, that doesnt mean they are "lesser" men, just not blessed with as great genetics / DBC (damageable brain capacity) as Hagler.
Darth Vaader "just not blessed with as great genetics / DBC (damageable brain capacity) as Hagler." this proves my point exactly, because they dont have a great "dbc" they are are arguably lesser men physically, its not as much a knock on them as it is a compliment on hagler's fortitude.
He was pretty good at fighting too, lol, he didn't take punches cleanly.
When I was a kid in the 70's I used to watch Sugar Ray's Golden Gloves show on Saturday Mornings ... those were the days of great Boxing.
I bet at his age he can still beat journeymen fighters.
Cloud Dweller Durán didn't "have" to gain anything, he couldn't stop eating and forced himself to move up because he couldn't stop eating.
Cloud Dweller What the fuck do you mean by "this negro" you racist piece of shit?
Cloud Dweller LOL, Duran shed weight before this fight. He was over 200 lbs a month and a half before Leonard II. Duran's weakness wasn't in the ring, it was outside of it and it cost him some fights. When Duran trained like a champ, he was almost unbeatable.
wtf does Duran have to do with my original comment?
+ooOmegaSupremeoo if someone says negro doesn't mean se is racist we latinos just call negro to negros white to whites you ahould learn Spanish to l ow how we call each other
Marvelous has that old man swag now lmao. Im glad to see his speech is still smooth, hardly any slurring or maybe none at all, if im not mistaken he always sounded like that. Boxing will neve be what it use to.
A legend and was a joy to watch. One of my favorites. I was on line to receive the Covid vaccination when I looked at my phone and saw the news of his passing. He appeared fit and healthy from the recent photos I had seen. Sad and shocking news. RIP. You will be long remembered by us fans.
Maaan, he still looks strong and solid! A great man!
One of a kind...thank you Marvelous Marvin...
Don't let Marvin fool you he's still disgusted he didn't get that rematch
Hagler retired after the decision, he didn’t stick around long enough for one(not that Ray would have gave him one anyway).
This dude was bad to the bone. I remember watching him and Hearns, with my grandpa when I was a little boy. I'll never forget watching him, and thinking how can a humans body look like that? He looked like just one huge muscle. True athlete. One of the greatest of all time, and my personal favorite :)
He says he wanted a rematch with Sugar Ray? But he quit Boxing and moved to Italy and became an actor!
