A service of Thankgiving For the Life of Yorkshire's famous shepherdess Hannah Bayles Tallentire Hauxwell, held at Barnard Castle Methodist Church, Barnard Castle.
I stumbled recently upon Hannah. She was an angel sent to remind us of humanity. To be humble and grateful of the simple pleasures in life. She gave kindness and respect to her cow who gave her warmth and a drink of the warm milk when she had no heat. RIP dear Hannah..xx
Sue Erickson I did too, I'm thankful that I did or I wouldn't have known about her courage, love, beauty, and compassion she had for the simplest things in life with her companion animals. She is what I consider as down to earth and amazing.
She never complained of the life she lived on the farm, I saw the programmes years ago and have never forgotten what a lovely lady she was. A simple soul, a hard life but now resting in peace. R.I.P Hannah Her quote - Wherever I am, whoever I am, This is me Has stayed with me and always will. GOD BLESS YOU
What a gentle sweet soul Hannah was. The photo @ 3:20 is the best photo I’ve seen of her, with her lovely smiley face. When I think of, or hear “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”, I will think about sweet, precious, gentle Hannah.
Oh how I wish I could have an ounce of optimism, hope and thankfulness this woman embraced her entire life. Such a beautiful soul. May she eternally rest in peace .
Yes , such a beauitful song." Vincent" (by Don Mclean) Hannah made this world a beauitful place.Just like Vincent Van Gogh(who this song was written for)He painted this world a beauitful place. Both on their own, both lonely, but had this wonderful gift of making everything around them filled with love & beauty .Can you imagine the "Starry, Starry Nights " around her farm , when she came back to the house from checking the land , she being the brightest Star around. Rest in Peace Dear Hannah. & I wish for you Many ,Many "Starry Starry Nights" God Bless Your Loving Soul x
paid a visit to hannahs meadow and low birk hat farm last year, what a beautiful un spoilt place, middle of nowhere mind, have to say i got a tad emotional thinking of hannah and the years she spent toiling away on her farm esp the bleak old winters,a inspiration to us all rip hannah, god bless x
We really should learn so much from her philosophy in this fast materialistic world we live in. And as for today’s coping skills......RIP Hannah, you touched so many people hearts and minds.
Beautifully said Calum Anderson, She did love her animals and didn't want to leave them. I'm sure that's what kept her going strong knowing she had a responsibility of taking care of them knowing they depended on her daily. The animals were the closest to having someone in her life. What a remarkable women and life filled with so much compassion. I wish I could have met her and cried when she was giving up her beloved animals to her neighbor. RIP: Lovely Hannah
Truly humble, dignified and strong. RIP Hannah, altho some time ago now, your passing left one person less who cd show the world what we need to keep - humanity.
I don't know if Hannah had any living family but she certainly had a church full of well-wishers at the end. She lived 91 years, but most of it was bleak, hardship, no electricity, a simple lonely existence, with her beloved animals and maybe a couple of friendly neighbours. Even when she was exposed to the world of television she was humble and softly spoken, innocent but trusted her guiding hands who opened up the wide world for her to experience. RIP Hannah, always remembered.
Good Bye Hannah. You have added to many peoples lives. Thank You for allowing us to intrude via the camera's recording of what can only be described as a chronicle of your strength and beauty. You are a part of my life Rest in Peace Dear Soul, no more work in the bitter cold anymore. Now you are home again.
When Jesus said Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth , it was written for Hannah Hauxwell , such a humble dignified women , even Royalty wanted to meet her and was charmed by her .....amazing
Dear, sweet, old Hannah. If I could wish that anyone would live forever it would be you. I read a book on her in about 2000 and have never forgotten it. Love from Australia.
A truly amazing person. Such kindness and dignity and a will of iron, living out her life in such solitude, trying to keep the family farm going, in conditions that many a man couldn't survive, until she reached the breaking point. I'm glad her later years were spent in a community that supported her. Rest in Peace, Hannah. If I ever make it back to the UK, I hope to visit your Meadow. You said when you passed that you would come back and walk in the meadow and along the River. Maybe I'll see you there. 🍃🌾🌻
It was the journey her family made. She knew no other. She enjoyed some comforts later in her time at the farm but it was the only life she knew and was her family home. Id have been the same. Selling your family home where your memories for so many years are is not easy for some. I found it pulled on all kinds of memories and thoughts. When you are the only one left like I was as was Hannah, I can understand her staying for so long.
So sad to hear of Hannah's passing...She was a real Yorkshire Dales character and a beautiful person as well...I met her once at a talk she gave in our local library and she signed my copy of her book. R.I.P

Dear Hannah, you lovely lady, one of a kind. May your soul rest in perfect peace, I hope that you are finally back to your place, the place where you belong, walking the meadow, down by the river......
A beautiful wonderful women' I remember her life story in documentary, it was absolutely brilliant' ahh man it must of been hard for this lady' isn't it unusual' her hard life ''made interesting entertainment for viewers, the beautiful lovely Hannah Hauxwell RIP
I live in Galicia and remember watching the first of the TV programmes about her back in the 1970's. Never read about her passing away in any major UK newspaper on line. Somehow and thankfully YT has given me some suggestions about what to view and apart form others about Miss Hauxwell, this was amongst them. I am sad to see this, but see had a very long life and I do hope she was happy in her small village cottage after life on the farm.
Ribierasacra When she lived in the small village cottage, I'm pretty sure she mentioned how she missed her family farm. There were so many memories there.
It's my experience that urban life even living in hamlets/ villages can be as lonely as anything.. it's what you are use to that's most important.. I suspect t she would have been more lonely.. more frustrated.. I hope not .. but she was a farm girl.. at heart! God bless Hannah and those lonely people who we don't know!! xx
That makes me feel so happy that all those people came out to her funeral . I just lost my lil son yesterday 2-26-19 . He was my lil Boston Terrior doggie but to me he was my son & I always lov him like he's human all the same rest in peace Ms.Hanna & my lil Junior .
A truly amazing lady.....thank you Hannah...because of you I'm living not far from you....a true inspiration....my heroine...goodnight and God bless you...xxxxxxxxx
Mind I agree but she may have only met them after she moved to the village a lot of people may not have know she existed until the tv programme filmed her
But that's not where she wanted to be. If you watch "A winter too many" she stated that her happy place was along the river near her house, her "Mississippi" as she called it. And that if a ghost was to be seen walking up and down the path, it would be her, because that's where her soul was the happiest. I want to believe that's where she is now. ♥
I well rember seeing the film of her life on the BBC and was ver very impressed with her fortitude and feeling for her animals, her generation is now gone, we shall never see her like again.I wish I had known you,you must have been very lonely for most of your life. God bless and goodbye Hanna.
I watched three documentaries this past year on her. I was utterly amazed that in this day and age, a person (and a not so young woman at that) could live such a harsh life. A morally upright, simple-living, honest, and somewhat naieve lady who wouldn;t hurt a fly.
May God rest Hannah. A true woman of substance. She coped well in that harsh environment and was driven by strength of will because she was dedicated to the farm, the land and her animals. Her family was there for 3 generations so her life was wrapped up in memories of the family she loved and when they died she was left on her own to keep the fires burning. Without complaint she was happy in her own way and had a beautiful outlook on life despite her hardships. Clear skin and lived till she was 91 years of age. What an honour to have met this fabulous lady.
I remember watching her on TV with my mother, many years ago. Mother and l admired your strength and fortitude. She had a hard life! But l think you do have enjoyment in her life, especially in the later years. All l. Can say is we all learnt alot from her! Integrity, faith, and endurance till the end. Thank you Hannah. I did not know of Hannah's passing. I saw a UA-cam documentary years ago about Hannah and was deeply touched by her sweet innocent soul She was so sweet and such a hardworking lady. She has touched so many people around the world. R.I.P. dear Hannah. God will greet you "well done good and faithful servant.". You will be sitting at the table of the Master tonight. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul. 🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻
Just stumbled on this during our Thanksgiving...What a remarkable woman, so glad she was recognized during her lifetime. She's a grand dame who no doubt lives in grandeur in heaven now. She certainly deserves it.
I live in Central London. It's 4am. Cold outside. I'm all cosy in bed with a lovely hot cup of tea. I have arthritis & a serious eye condition. I have to put eye drops in my eyes every hr for 2 days & nights. So finding this beautiful documentary of Hannah, has really moved me. What a strong, independent woman. Shame she never married. By the way. It's the 15th Feb. Nearly the 5tb anniversary of her death. RIP Hannah. X
Another great documentary I stumbled onto. Found the lives of Hannah & Freddy Dibnah quite extraordinary . Captivating they both were . True Brits 🇬🇧 Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Thank you to them both, Respects from the USA 🇺🇸
Just stumbled across her life and can't stop tearing up over a Unique and Wonderful woman! Thank you for sharing ! Her philosophy of life should be passed along and is truly a gift she left to us all!

An amazing woman. May her memory be a blessing.
I did not know of Hannah's passing. I saw a UA-cam documentary years ago about Hannah and was deeply touched by her sweet innocent soul
She was so sweet and such a hardworking lady.
RIP Hannah. X
