  • It is not all about muscles. Women give their views on what they find attractive in a man.
Reporter Cathal O’Shannon asks young women about the physical attributes that they find attractive in men.
According to those interviewed, both physical attributes and personality contribute to the attractiveness of a man.
"I don’t like a man who’s too preoccupied with his own masculinity."
Musical talents also featured in the list of desirable characteristics.
"I’m very attracted to men who are able to sing and play music."
One woman says she like a well-proportioned man in terms of height and build.
"I find those muscular men rather revolting to look at."
    Another woman reinforces this view,
"...Apollo type specimens of humanity which I find rather disgusting looking."
This episode of ‘Newsbeat’ was broadcast on 27 June 1967. The reporter is Cathal O’Shannon.

Well that couldn't be further from the truth. Men historically never sought women as peers since God made both complimentary but distinct and different. One who provides in the home and the other outside. Women like bigger physical bodies than themselves, men like the hourglass shape which signifies fertility. Men like young woman because fertility. Women care about status and career of a man where as a man could pick up a very nice macdonalds chick. They dont care about career as much.

Of course a beautiful face is attractive to them and the most(not only) important thing, but it's more uncounscious to them because of the lower sex drive I think. Men are more inclined to say physical attributes are important because of higher libido and are less picky, even though physical attributes are important to both men and women... maybe even more for women as they become more selective with more male offers.

They've picked particular women to film. It's like if you see footage of people on the BBC TV 5 and half decade ago they all have received pronunciation and are well spoken - that doesn't reflect Britain today but it didn't reflect it in the past. Somewhat ironically the BBC kind of went to the opposite extreme, now everyone on TV has to have a silly regional accent. But, if these people had just filmed random women and asked them question they've had met the same dumb people you see on modern videos where they film random people.
In short : Deciding people were more intelligent or better spoken in the past based on this video is selection bias. It'd be like deciding that Americans are thin or attractive based on watching a TV show like House - in reality the general population is mostly fat and demented but TV and the movies selects specific people who aren't like that.

The way they discuss their revulsion sounds like they're starting to see bodybuilders and gym-goers on the street regularly, not just as an exotic characterization on television. Sorry to burst your bubble, but most mature women don't or didn't want overly muscular men. It probably was never a preference in human population, since humans tended to be underfed and lean for all their existence. The burly man has been normalized in cinema as highly desirable, so now women, who base their sexual preferences on societal acceptance and status, would pursue men who can imitate that physique. That's the major reason they're favored, but by which age group? Even present studies show that moderately mature women interesting in long-term relationships favor less muscular men. So basically all your 'gains' was just to be eye candy for women you won't even form a permanent bond with. It's a defining feature of the west's female sexual revolution-male objectification, yet you think it's masculine?

Their language is a breath of fresh air when compared to today's articulation of native english speakers. I am, as a foreigner, a great fan of english literature, and, therefore, I take great pains to avoid filler words and repeating vocabulary. I like that people back then seemed to get straight to the point and gave the right amount of information. You ask them a question and they give you the response. You ask them to elaborate and they do so. They didn't laugh every chance they'd get, or try to crack self-deprecating jokes, or go off-topic. They were well spoken and had a broader vocabulary.
Conversations with people these days where everyone just speaks in slang, give too much or too little information, laugh and crack jokes for no reason, and have awkward body language. I don't envy many things about the past but I do envy how conversations were back then. It just seemed more cultured and productive.

The reason for these women speaking so well has very little to do with reading--reading is emphasized just as much in schools today--and has far more to do with a change in values. If a teacher back then said, "We are going to enunciate our words clearly, because we want to be proper, well-mannered, and understood when we speak," the class would nod in agreement, because those values were respected back then. But if a teacher said the same thing to a class today, the students would burst out laughing. Postmodernism and the 60's taught us to laugh at personal standards of propriety, to banish rules, and to focus instead on being our own "authentic" selves.

In the "Anglosphere" at least, most spoke in a rather "formal" manner back then, as it was pretty much socially expected.

This reflects a change in fashion. My mum was always clear to point out body builders would ultimately run to fat. It was equated with vanity which was not considered ‘masculine’. These women are unusual in that they were all clipped and articulate. They have been carefully selected and definitely not representative of the whole population. There were inarticulate people back then too. It’s just no one would have considered them worth interviewing
