  • Shermann Dilla Thomas, TikToker and Chicago Historian, tells the story behind something fans see every time they come to Guaranteed Rate Field to watch the team play - the pinwheels.
In the late 1950s, White Sox owner Bill Veeck was inspired by a movie where the actor played a lot of pinball. Trying to bring more excitement and promotion to the fan experience, Veeck set out to create baseball’s first exploding scoreboard.
The first person to set off the scoreboard was White Sox outfielder Al Smith on May 1, 1960 and players still light it up to this day.
Origin Stories, presented by @Guaranteedrate, is a short-form docuseries, discussing “how” and “why” certain traditions or artifacts in White Sox culture are commemorated and recognized by fans.

The original exploding scoreboard had just the Roman candles. The pinwheels came a year or two later. There were 10 columns originally and then eight pinwheels. Then the 1982 board had nine columns each with a pinwheel. When they moved to the new park, the columns were for some reason reduced to seven. The current board installed for the 2016 season mimics the shape of the original but maintains the seven column and pinwheel combo while brining back the fireworks shooting directly out of them.

Had it not been for Bill Veeck, the White Sox would not be what it is now. Thank you, Bill, for introducing us to the pinwheel and the "exploding" scoreboard.

If it wasn’t for Bill Veeck, the Sox would not be in Chicago. I loved the old school original board from the 60s the best.
