JESUS CHRIST!! Thats hell of a bright lamp
I have an idea..Can this be used on day time to overpower the sun? I mean be used to fill the harsh shadows caused by the sun?
That would be amazing test..To compare it with the sun

It's a little less bright than an Arri M18.
If you use it without diffusion then yes, but with diffusion, no.
On a cloudy day the M40 will do ( about 2,5 times brighter)
On a sunny day if you're not standing next to your textile an M90 will be needed ( 2,5 times brighter than the M40)
Ofc it will fill up your shadows a bit and depending of the situation it will do a decent job.
For this price point there is no better alternative any way.

yeah would be along the lines of the setup they used on "twister" to get the dark and stormy skies. overlight everyone so they could stop back down. a lot of those scenes in the truck I remember the actors saying how hot they were because the scenes were so bright and so much power.

Would be fun to see the 1200D positioned as far as possible and use the A7S3 and Laowa 35mm f/0.95 lens. Or would at that point the moon become bright enough 🤣

In my mind, the only reason to shoot night for day in a forest, is to give it a very particular look. Which will look unmotivated. Cant even think of an example where ive seen that. But Night for Night, it would be nice to have a crane that can get the light up really high and light a large area evenly. I've never had the budget for that. But when i do low budget moonlight i make sure i get a really tall stand (Mambo Combo Quad Riser) that can go up 25ft. I would also put a 4x4 styro on top of that tall stand, then bounce my light into that. To create a shorter fall off, Since I cant get my light any higher. It works, but you're still limited by how much background you see that you'd have to light. I also like to place it so its a 3/4 backlight.
When i sparked on Locke & Key, they had 3 genie booms, each with 2x 18k HMI's. They would use one at a time depending on the scene they were shooting and what direction they were facing. Each one...140ft in the air. Glad it wasn't me up there! The bucket of the lifts would sway 4-6 ft distances. Yikes.

Crazy. I think a soft modifier would have helped to spread out the light a bit and make it more natural, of course you would lose some light. But thats the game of lighting.

Fair play guys! Of course it was always going to be a challenge to light up the background but for a few seconds in some of the tighter shots (and if you didn't know it was night time) it really does trick the brain to believe that it is actually daytime. So well done to you all for making the effort for us all to watch and enjoy. You are all very lucky to have what you have created so keep going, keep working hard and you will be successful but somehow I think that by doing what you are all already doing together can be considered a success.
Mark from Ireland ... who actually lives in Italy : )

A couple of 8X8 bounces would have helped a lot as well as a bit of light shooting from behind the trees. Fall off and lack of reflective wrapping light is what makes it look artificial but you're comparing it to the sun and clouds which is a giant source so its really hard to artificially mimic that with a couple of lights. Also shooting through a giant silk might help too. Great video though, I loved that you guys got out there and did this as its nice to see what this light could do. Im on the fence about this light. I already have a 600D which is over powered for most stuff. I also have a light canon which Im not a fan of its size as its a pain to haul around. But I do like having the power of the 1200. Great job guys.

What if you could have so much light coming from a drone designed to be a flying light source? I mean the huge ones used to carry cinema cameras take thousands of watts to fly, so it shouldn't be too hard on the batteries to have an extra 1200w as a load. The airflow from propellers can cool the LED pretty well so the body can definitely be made thinner and lighter. If it flies for 5-10 minutes per battery with lights on, that is good enough for fake moonlight and sunlight because how high they can fly.
p.s. I know helicopters have search lights, but they are expensive to operate and really noisy, while huge drones will be quiet 100meters away unless they are directly overhead.

    • @jacobhauenstein
      @jacobhauenstein 2 роки тому

you'd need a massive drone and you've be constantly landing and taking off to change batteries. Might as well just invest in a stand that can get you high enough.

I mean to see how much light the 1200D can bring into a midnight outdoor scene just really shows that the possibilities are endless when it's used in easier scenarios, like every kind of indoor space or urban areas... it's very exciting!

You should unroll all the way your electric winder, there's a huge exchange of electrons passing through the rolled cable causing heat, in the long term it will damage your cable and even melt it completely

In the daytime sky itself should be a much brighter as you said, but in addition to that it would create bluish soft ambient light from the top, and you are unfortunately missing that effect here :) The lamp is super cool tho. Am here since your GH4 videos like the one you used as an example in this vid.
I started watching you when I decided to quit my job and go full-time freelance videographer. (2017)
Starting with the (basically) manual GH4 taught me a lot of lessons in camera operating (most non-cinema camera's are so advanced and automated nowadays)
All I hear from people starting today is .. what is the best autofocusing camera etc etc .
I am still grateful for all your tips as it helped me so much in my startup! ( and still this very day) .
I know you went to some tough times and hardship... So it sincerely pleases me to still see you out there doing your thing(s) with so much passion and devotion.
Keep up the good stuff Andy!
    Much love from the Netherlands!
    Cheers
