  • What To Avoid When Taking Gabapentin | Foods, Natural Supplements, Medications
Gabapentin (also known as Neurontin) is a GABA analog used to treat post-herpetic neuralgia, partial seizures, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions. However, generalized neuronal inhibition can cause drowsiness and fatigue among many other side effects. Additionally, certain foods, beverages, substances, herbal medications, and prescription medications can interact with Gabapentin to cause increased and more severe side effects.

This was very helpful information and I like the way you presented it. I especially like how you included how this medication reacts with homeopathic supbstances such as Valarian/valarian root, as These are the type of remedies I prefer, but if on occasion I should take a prescription, its good to know how the 2 types of remedies interact with each other. Many times, natural remedies are not mentioned or included, like they had been in this video. It is very much the type of information I'm looking for and would like to know about. Thanks so much!

Most people don't consider supplements and homeopathic remedies. I tell docs everything I put in my body. I also tell the pharmacist, as they're really up on cross reactions. That's the one time you don't want to lie, in a doctor's office or hospital. Bad things can happen.

Never had any side effects even with alcohol. Use it for back pain from kyphosis. I think every drug can have different effects for different people. Not as effective as opioids but also not addictive and much less sides.

All drugs are addictive. They have side effects which means the body doesn’t recognize it. It will cause dementia! Do not use this at all for any reason. It’s not worth the consequences. There is many problems with medications. Read the book Drug Muggers. By Dr Suzy Cohan.

Just hearing the word gabapentin gives me anxiety. I was using it at 1800 mg (6x 300 mg) daily before stopping cold turkey. My neurologist/palliative care drs never warned and i never been on medication before. Within 24 hours after stopping it, i had the first and worst panic/anxiety attack in my life. Experienced horrible symptoms ... trip to the ER, horrible medical care , etc. that was march 2022, a day I'll never forget and it took me a year to recover but still not at a 100%. I am still experiencing phobias i never had before and recurring panic attacks. It even brought back some terrible memories from things that happened during my childhood, growing up during the war ... weird stuff. Never again, id rather deal with pain than go thru that hell again ..

Its common malpractice to not warn patients of anything, for some meds i even asked if i should worry about a known side effect and they tell you no it doesn't cause that it's Crazy, for example one doctor told me vyvanse won't raise blood pressure and one said it isn't addictive both are false and luckily i do my own research not only ask doctors

So weird I’ve been taking gabapentin for five years. I can go a month without it and never experienced any side effects or withdrawals. I guess everybody’s different but I don’t go on here telling people what to do and what not to do.

Those side effects are the quiet deadly ones you won’t notice until the damage is done so treat the cause of your problems so you don’t need these deadly drugs.

Good point about the alcohol. I generally don't drink but will very occasionally have one or two glasses of wine and I've noticed since being on Gabapentin that alcohol affects me maybe twice as strongly as it did before I was on it.

Pregabalin was a really effective compound but its onset of action and duration of action were pretty terrible, Pfizer eventually released an XR/PR formula but it should of started as one, then coming off the compound was more difficult than opioids and benzodiazepines (with like 10 years of use of those, far easier too discontinue than pregabalin was after a few years being at 900mg because I would wake up in withdrawals with the 600mg 2 times a day dosage.)
I never really experience any issues with gabapentin but I never used it at anywhere near the same dosage strength.

I'm on opioid medications (Codeine and Morphine) as well as Gabapentin. I also take an SSRI (Sertraline), Trazodone and an anti-histamine (Cyclizine). They are all prescribed by the same doctor so I assume in my case it must be okay to mix them?

Better NOT assume your doctor was well-informed and weighed all relevant info before diagnosing your conditions - or was cautious and thoughtful in prescribing each of your medications. Don’t assume that your doctor keeps reviewing your treatment plan. We each need to educate ourselves as thoroughly as possible. Learn all you can about your illnesses, their causes and all available interventions. Seek evidence from high quality research papers published in peer-reviewed journals. (Google pubmed.gov). Even highly dedicated doctors are challenged to do it right! Of course, your doctor may feel sad if eventually it becomes clear that your treatment plan was making you sicker - but don’t count on it! YOU are the one who will die or live in this body of yours - for better or worse! At least, find an excellent pharmacist, and ask his or her opinion of your medications! At least, find an excellent pharmacist, and ask his or her opinion of your medications! At least ask a very competent pharmacist to review your list of medication‘s and tell you whether they are likely to interfere with each other.

I'm lucky, I can't take ssri meds or trazadone. Tried this gabapentin once and had a bad reaction. I'll just stick to what works and use the least number of meds possible.

I’ve been on this stuff after every back surgery I’ve had bc a nerve somewhere has been un impinged and it feels as if a campfire has been set-on a knee, top of a foot, so badly the sheet cant be tolerated touching. Although I developed restless legs within the past two years e gabapentin I’ve been taking for over 10 years does nothing, including the magnesium I take. But it was prescribed to me for hot flashes!! 300mg 4x/d and not too long ago I asked my doc to raise it and he wouldn’t. He wasn’t the original prescriber, but it just so pisses me off I’m a female still having to deal with the likes of hot flashes!! When does it E N D ???😢

    • @chiarac3833

The best thing for hot flashes and the like is BioTE bioidentical hormone replacement. If your lady doc doesn't offer, find one who does. Personally I'd rather deal with hot flashes than take the risk on gabapentin or some similar nonsense.

Gabapantin was prescribed by a vet for my cat (obviously pet version)and he cried day and night from neausea I had to stop it immediately
A family member was prescribed the same and the family member also confirmed having continued nausea and slurred speech
Definitely it’s not something I would want to try I can live with some other fibromyalgia treatment
