The show had us believe for 9 episodes that playing it safe was NOT what this show was about. Dont get me wrong, he’s a wonderful chef but totally didn’t deserve to win. The American judge bullied the other chefs into believing that boldness suddenly wasn’t a criteria for judging. All the other chefs took risks and this guy played it safe with a dish he has perfected... I totally hated the finale. I’m quite confident if you were to ask the chef judges what they think of their decision. They would all say, in hindsight, it was not the right decision

They obviously edit it to make you think that. Other chefs could have chosen a dish that they have perfected but decided not to. Calculated risks. Other chefs lost because they were too bold and their dish didn't come together quite right all throughout the show. No prizes anyway, just honor and pride.

I never really understood the final and how he won. How is it fair to judge a dish perfected over years equal to the creation of a new dish on the spot? Even Shane and Mark who had many recipes they had refined to cook from put themselves at the same levels as the other competitors which I really respected but he sort of just picked a dish he had done in the past

I just discovered The Final Table on Netflix. This is now my favorite competition cooking show. These are professional chefs making professional dishes and, finally, they are not beholden to a stopwatch. Cooking should be about love, not about panic. The Final Table is a proper cooking show but I have nagging questions. First off, I can't believe that all nine judges are chefs at the highest level and that they were all brought together under one roof. Major respect. I did like the fact that the competing chefs were paired up as a team but I was unclear as to why. Doesn't the team aspect of the competition risk sending a chef home that's perhaps the best singular chef in the competition? On the flip side, cooking in a kitchen is about having the best team working together as one unit. When it came to the finals, the four chefs each cooked individual dishes. Picking a winning chef from just one plate seems arbitrary to me. It seems like each of the finalists should have to cook at least two dishes to ensure that the winning chef wins by merit. Perhaps the first dish could be from an ingredient picked by all 9 super-chefs (as in previous episodes) and then the second dish could be the finalists decision. The judges would choose the winning chef based on each of the finalist's two dishes. I appreciated what Clare Smyth said about Tim Hollingsworth's final plate. Clare said that Tim's plate was so perfect that it must have already been part of his repertoire. She went on to question the lack of risk taking and whether or not being safe should be rewarded. Grant Achatz countered that, in the end, the winning plate should strictly be about the best tasting, most beautifully presented plate. Contrary to Hollingsworth's safe and proven approach, Darren MacLean went out of his comfort zone and cooked a fish head. A risk that, unfortunately, didn't pay off. I congratulate Tim Hollingsworth on his win. I'm left, however, scratching my head as to whether or not this will further Hollingsworth's career as a chef. Did Hollingsworth win a televised cooking competition or will his win have greater significance? Does Tim's seat at The Final Table carry the importance of a San Pellegrino award or a Michelin Star? For Tim's sake and for the sake of all of the other finalists in the completion I hope this show will boost their profile and respect in the culinary world.

I mean Timothy did great, but definitely the competition was to create something new, unique, and bold which is also delicious and elegant. All the other 3 chefs except Timothy made something sooo unique and new from their imagination which they themselves never had tasted before but took the bold risk to take it and push their boundaries. For me they are the real winners!

Tbh, him winning felt anticlimactic to me because to me his dish kinda looked like the one with the least character among all the dishes served in the finale. Then again, that's just how it looked to me visually, taste is a whole other dimension to it, so who am I to judge? 😅🤷‍♂️

The whole competition was about being bold and pushing the boundaries. And then they chose a chef who played it safe? Yeah, not great. The other meals were perfect too. Mark specificly said "there is no way i am taking recipes out of my cookbooks. Im making something new."
If the judges werent rigged, he would have won. The american judge is all about being bold, pushing the boudnaries, making something new. Yet he pressures the others to vote for the guy who played it safe??? Unbelivable. Sad. Not fair. Rigged.
I guess america in 4 words.

Let me get this out of the way first. As much as I liked Shane and Mark, in the end Timothy absolutely deserved to win. Darren is a great chef, but Tim carried their team with the one exception of Japanese food, Darrens forte. Like it or not his final dish won the palletes of the judges. People need to stop calling everything "rigged" just because they don't like the outcome. Now that that's out of the way, as this interview reveals, Timothy succeeded as a chef because of his undeterred ambition and voracious curiosity and appetite for knowledge! (and food). Listen to the amount of drive he had, flying all the way to NY at 19 just to check out the CIA when he had never even been on a plane before. His persistent calls to the French Laundry before getting an interview, and again after the interview. His constant studying and checking out various cusines and restaurants he could barely afford. Timothy Hollingsworth is not only an inspiration to chefs, but to anyone who wants to succeed in any field!
