For just a short time at the hobby, you do real nice work!. Only a year? Looks like more experience than that. I don't mess with static display models too much anymore. I like the larger scale R/C models. But using the knowledge I have from plastic model building, I get some great looking flying models. Like the A6M Zero / Zeke, and the F4U.
Thank you well just over a year but watched a lot of UA-cam videos en route with some great modellers who have given their tips over. Like Scale-a-ton and Plasmo. Never done R/C but certainly keen on F4U’s not done any Japanese planes yet 👍
Working on a Wiesel 1 with 20mm autocanon now, it is an AFVclub reboxed Revell kit. It is a super pain to build, ALOT of cleanup, and loads of filling and sanding. Miss My Eduard/Tamiya/Hasegawa kits 😅
You mean the clear parts I guess? That’s because if you were inside the plane looking out it would appear as a green frame on the inside ie pilot view. With this model not so important as canopies we’re closed but with canopies open you would see it - hope that is what you mean and it makes sense 👍
Wow, i just got done watching your build of the Academy Dragonfly, and then i found and watched your video here of the PBY5A Catalina. This is a great model and you done tge old bird justice. I also have this model on the shelf. The Cat's were unsung heros of the pacific during WWII. Pilot rescure, long range scouting, casualty evacuation. Sub hunters too. Has a friend of the family back in the San Francisco bay area who flew these aircraft as well as tge naval version of the B-24, flew through out the war as a sub-hunter, he never found a Japanese sub, but bombed a number of their surface ships, he also a dozen or more aircrews mostly along the coast of California or Hawaii. He's gone now. I was glad to have known him. Great piece of work both the model & video.
Thank you Bob that means a lot 👍 I love the Cat’s and would jump at the chance of have a trip in one. Takes a lot of courage to approach a ship that has all of its guns aimed at you. I take my hat off to those guys❤️
I love you video. So it is with not disrespect intended, I must say that, the music, the chapter cards, and your voicemail makes me think I'm watching a WW2 documentary with the voice of a veteran describing the event.

Hi, A really well done and finished model. Well done. I have only one small comment and that is nothing to do with the model build. but the base. 2 things there is no wake from the back of the fuselage and also you have the plane moving through the water with static props. If you want it in water an at anchor scenario would be more realistic. Unless you could motorise the props. The engine cowlings and wings look big enough to take 2 small electric motors and the wiring would run through the aircraft and out to the base unseen. To a small battery pack with a simple on off switch. It could be hidden in the base edge. As I said a a really well done build. Your talent is clear to see.
Thank you for the reply it means a lot and your words are very kind. The electric motor isn't something that would interest me but yes you are quite right it could be adapted. Concerning the wake - the idea of the plane was it had just come to stop and was doing the last bob down in the water. I checked many actually photos and very few have the floats actually touching the water at all they seem to be more like stabilises. that said there is one small wake behind the port float as if it had lean to that side briefly before stopping. That said it was pretty much my first diorama so apology if there are things that grate on the eye.
Great work! I have heard that some rich people have bought and refurbished Catalina's and use them as flying campervans. I wish I was that rich. As far as the nose weight is concerned you can buy Tungsten shot (Heavier than lead) and cover it with resin so it wont move or rattle.
Well done I have been modelling now for 2 year's now even though I am coloured blind I am getting there I have built a few diaramas I have USN PBY -5A I have done a sea scape as a sample and yes I am impressed I have the HMS Bounty 1:110 scale that I will build in the future many thanks
@TheScaleModeler your work is fantastic mate I would love to send you the work I have done in my 2 years, and being coloured blind has not impacted my results
I just remembered - I built one of these kits in the mid-1970's! 'Bought it at the nearby K-Mart store and just glued the blue plastic parts together with that awful, gooey, toxic Testor's paint in the metal tube. "Mom... model-building always gives me a headache." "Oh, it's just the glue, honey." Good times.
Sweet memories and amazingly you’re still here to tell the tale 😉 maybe they made people a bit harder back then 😂. Thanks for commenting I hope you subscribed and liked 👍 Take it easy Tim 👍
When I saw Revell and Fantastic in the same sentence I thought don’t see that often, but it’s the Academy tooling so that makes sense lol. TBH it shows that Revell can produce kits without flash, so it must just be their moulds have it built in 😂 Nice build, and well done for preserving with that tiny PE, I tend to leave the really tiny bits off as I’m getting older!
Yes there’s is certainly a contradiction in the sentence 😂 The PE is a labour of love for sure . Revell do produce more budget friendly kits and normally there is a price to pay in the sense of losing details. Horses for courses I guess
@@TheScaleModeler I often use them as practice models for technique and then give them away to people because the investment is low enough and saves potentially ruining a more expensive kit! Like you, I love the PBY so I may actually buy one of these. I’m going to check out your water scape video too, that looked awesome
You’re more than welcome and thanks for feeding back it’s really motivating to know that at least a few people have gotten so enjoyment and tips from the videos 👍 new coming soon btw 😉
Great video, but second the comment about the edits... i really appreciate the honesty about the issues such as the loose guns and ball bearing issues. It made me realise how stressful this wonderful hobby can be. I usually find halfway through i hate the model im working on and want nothing more to finish it so i can start another. But when it is all done all i can remember is the positive experiences 😂
Yes, seeing issues that come up or present themselves and the individual model maker’s solution(s) is great. At the end it is the enjoyment of the process and results. If you enjoy it, then other opinions do not matter, unless it is truly constructive, positive, criticism. When others express enjoyment for you, all the better. Great work, I learned from this, thanks.
Too true. Many model-related UA-camrs seem to never have a single issue! Yeah, right. I almost never use etch brass: it makes the model twice as difficult and sometimes makes it very slightly better. This Academy model has been released under a few brands: Wolfpack released the Academy plastic and decals for either a Coastal Command Catalina that shadowed the Bismarck, or a USN machine that spotted the Japanese fleet at Midway. Hard to get the kits but cool subjects.
Thanks for the compliment much appreciated It’s ok for someone who’s built a few planes already, Make sure you paint the wings and fuselage separately I think is the best tip. 👍
Hey Scale Modeler. You just got another subscriber. I like this build as well. I like how you do your video's, I have a lot of fun just watching. Thank you Sir.
Dont go down the rabbit hole by over doing it as you get more experience...the way you weathered that plane is in my view excellent and beleivable... nice work 👍
No problem Paul! Adjustable jigs are 3d printed and there are a few sellers on eBay. I have two sizes for planes and one for tanks or you can grab a file for 3d printing if you have a printer. Also they do 3d printed Tamiya glue stands and decal solution holders which are a must for me as I keep knocking them over. 👍
Excellent job! Just one minor critique is that there would be no chipping on the black de-icing boot on the leading edges of the wings, as these are made of rubber and meant to inflate to break up any icing that occurs.

Great work. Very nice Catalina. I also built Catalina on sea level on my YT channel last year. Only I still built the old original Revell model from the sixties of the last century. I give you a subscription and a like and I will look forward to more perfect videos. Best regards, Ales 🙂👍
What a great model you have done it really good, last year I was lucky enough to see a catalina flying, it was at a ww2 reenactment event called The Victory Show at Cosby. Ever since I thought it would be fantastic to do a model of it.
Super , I've one in my stash it's the Academy one . I like the blue colours not the black, the water affects are great so please do show how you did this process I'm still learning myself after a number of years, great work again and keep it up. 👍.
I've built this model a couple of times when it was still under the Academy brand. I really loved this kit. One version I did was the PBY from the movie "Always". There were a lot of modifications required but the end result was worth the effort. Draw Decal offers an excellent decal set of the "Fire Eaters" PBY from the movie. If you ever get a chance, I would give this version a go. You've built a beautiful model and I really enjoyed how how you produced this video. Great Job.!
Beautiful decals! Yep just checked it out- thank you 🙏 you have got my mind thinking 🤔 I’ve just found this you maybe interested; www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235069008-revell-148-catalina-always-super-catalina-conversion/ Thanks for commenting much appreciated
Two things: I once met a woman whose husband flew Black Cats. The last Catalina i saw had the paint and wings removed and was on a flat bed trailer heading down Interstate 95. Kermet says that it wasn't his.
The nose doors gave you some trouble. My suggestion is to put a strip of sheet plastic inside. The doors then just sit on top of the plastic strip. It also gives you a stronger bond than just a very thin butt join. Beautiful work there sir!
That’s great news thank you 😊 The lead is a good idea I have lead strip they use for aquarium plants so I will have to try that next time- thanks for the heads-up 👍
The rivet detail blew me away and you know it really needs to be there as when you look at period photos you can clearly see it. Glad you enjoyed the build - go for it 👍
Thank you mine too, not a Skyrider but I have a build video coming of the 1/72 Dragonfly A37-B by Academy which also served in Vietnam war won’t be for a while but 100% will be coming Thank you for feedback 👍
This might be a dumb question, but is there any prep work required to use the Pledge? Thinner or anything like that? I’ve seen others use it as well and I’ve always wanted to try it. Great build! And thx in advance for any help!
Hi there, thank you 👍first this is a good question and I had the same one infact I was pretty concerned the first time I used it. There’s so many products on the market it’s easy to feel intimidated by them. I found pledge to be better than most gloss varnish’s for models and considerably cheaper. once I have finished with painting and decals are on I tend to seal it with a coat or two of pledge. Be careful going over enamel and lacquer as the drying time of these could cause cracks as the pledge dries more quickly. Be careful of thinners as well as these can work the pledge off. I use lighter fluid with pledge and don’t have issues.
Yes straight from bottle you can also dilute with water. If airbrushing clean the airbrush out completely as it will set in the airbrush. I normally do a heavy clean every day of use anyway and rub needle down with a 1000 grit piece of wet and dry paper in order to maintain smoothness of operation- hope that helps 👍
The flying boat had a tail wheel and was not a true amphibian. That is beaching gear. The amphibian version had retractable nose wheel undercarriage. In Canada we made the distinction of calling one the Catalina and the other the Canso.
My home is LONG ISLAND, NY. At Farmingdale Republic Airport, there's an air power museum they are currently restoring a Catalina PBY! Regards, Andy, Annmarie's husband.
Very kind words thank you, true hero’s, it’s extremely brave to fly slow moving aircraft with enemy fire popping all around you. Model making whilst enjoyable also create moments of reflection and appreciation 👍
That looks incredible on the water base I actually thought it was a reference photo of the real airplane at first. Well done, really inspirational.⭐👍
Thank you that’s the biggest compliment you could give me- job done 😊👍

Thank you Toni, I’ve learnt quite a lot from the build as well 👍
And so you should be proud, Grand finish! Really appreciate the video on the water base!
Thank you much appreciated feedback 👍
Fantastic! The technique you used for the finish and weathering, taught me a few things. Cheers!
Sweet that’s what it’s all about- thank you for feeding back its good to hear 👍
Postshading and chipping do BEFORE washes and dirts.
Yep I mucked up there 😉
Hello. What did You use for making water?
Hi it’s explained in my other video here: Anyone could make this DIY sea diorama step by step Ocean model - and it's so easy!
ua-cam.com/video/j70kJqWwYZc/v-deo.html
The Catalina is such an interesting looking aircraft and I think you've done a great job 😎
Isn’t it just? I fell in love with sea planes as a child and this bought back loads of memories. Thank you for your compliment 👍
4:38 what kind of putty is holding the parts? thanks
Blue tack/ white tack in the uk power tack in some other countries, used for putting pieces of paper on walls 👍
Great work. Very nice Catalina. I also built Catalina on sea level on my YT channel last year. Only I still built the old original Revell model from the sixties of the last century. I give you a subscription and a like and I will look forward to more perfect videos. Best regards, Ales 🙂👍
Thank you for kind words 👍 I returned the sub👍
What a great model you have done it really good, last year I was lucky enough to see a catalina flying, it was at a ww2 reenactment event called The Victory Show at Cosby. Ever since I thought it would be fantastic to do a model of it.
Thank you - it has its annoyances but worth it 👍
Super , I've one in my stash it's the Academy one . I like the blue colours not the black, the water affects are great so please do show how you did this process I'm still learning myself after a number of years, great work again and keep it up. 👍.
Brilliant thank you and yes hopefully up in a few days time 👍
I've built this model a couple of times when it was still under the Academy brand.
Yep just checked it out- thank you 🙏 you have got my mind thinking 🤔 I’ve just found this you maybe interested; www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235069008-revell-148-catalina-always-super-catalina-conversion/
Thanks for commenting much appreciated
Great Work modelcomrade.
Nice Catalina😊
Appreciated thank you 😊
Dude that looks amazing!!
Thank you ☺️
Two things: I once met a woman whose husband flew Black Cats. The last Catalina i saw had the paint and wings removed and was on a flat bed trailer heading down Interstate 95. Kermet says that it wasn't his.
An awesome plane nonetheless- even on a trailer!
The nose doors gave you some trouble. My suggestion is to put a strip of sheet plastic inside. The doors then just sit on top of the plastic strip. It also gives you a stronger bond than just a very thin butt join.
Beautiful work there sir!
Top tip cheers Kelly 👍
Great job mate you’ve got a new subscriber !
That’s great news thank you 😊 The lead is a good idea I have lead strip they use for aquarium plants so I will have to try that next time- thanks for the heads-up 👍
A really excellent build! Great techniques and processes. I still can’t get over the rivet detail in this model wow tempted 👍🏻🤣
The rivet detail blew me away and you know it really needs to be there as when you look at period photos you can clearly see it. Glad you enjoyed the build - go for it 👍
@@TheScaleModeler too right compared to italeri with raised panel lines 😱😱😱 i am fighting through with my stinger atm. Review coming soon
Sweet just subbed in 👍
@@TheScaleModeler you legend!
Very nice, such a beautiful plane.
Thank you I hope I did it justice, it’s one of my favourite planes

One of my all-time favourite aircraft, together with the Skyraider! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
Thank you mine too, not a Skyrider but I have a build video coming of the 1/72 Dragonfly A37-B by Academy which also served in Vietnam war won’t be for a while but 100% will be coming Thank you for feedback 👍
Well done!! I love this plane!!
Thank you 😊 it certainly ranks as one of the best ever made in my opinion 👍
@@TheScaleModeler so the Pledge is straight from the bottle? I really appreciate the help! I’ll try it on the Wildcat I’m working on now!
@@TheScaleModeler right on! I do the same cleanup routine myself. I’m gonna try the Pledge in a few days. I appreciate the advice!
Great build. I love it!!
Thank you 👍
Well tidy Catalina,well tidy indeed.
Much appreciated Kenneth-thank you 👍
Looks amazing!
Thank you 👍
I think it turned out great nicely done 👍👍
Thank you very much I've been blown away by the nice comments and helpful tips
Nice job. I had an old Revell(maybe Monogram) kit that actually had a tailwheel on the Catalina.
Thank you yes they’re a great kit all round
Hi James I was just wondering if you can remember which kit that was?
@@TheScaleModeler I still have the box top. Revell Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina II A. Kit number 4370. from 1988.
Appreciate that thank you 😊
The flying boat had a tail wheel and was not a true amphibian. That is beaching gear. The amphibian version had retractable nose wheel undercarriage.
In Canada we made the distinction of calling one the Catalina and the other the Canso.
Really nice build of this iconic plane
Thank you for the feedback it means a lot when people take the trouble to comment 👍
My home is LONG ISLAND, NY. At Farmingdale Republic Airport, there's an air power museum they are currently restoring a Catalina PBY!
Regards,
Andy, Annmarie's husband.
You’re so lucky to be that close. Wish I could see that 👍
Looks stunning
Thank you.I am pretty amazed at how it ended up
A la altura del standard?
Estás más allá de el!
Lol gracias pero solo soy un principiante
I think it looks great
Cheers Craig thank you 👍
Lovely work mate!... a really a nice kit to build and you've done it great. Cheers!
Isn’t it a lovely kit, I was surprised at its size though. A truly beautiful airplane from aviation’s past 👍
It looks great keep it goin
Thank you Steven I will 👍
Thanks for the video! The Catalina looks great! I'm trying to get into modeling myself, so this helps me out alot!
Brilliant I wouldn’t recommend it as a beginner kit though if that’s what you mean can be frustrating at times. Thanks for feeding back 👍
Great job! I’m going to have to build this 👍🏻
Thank you Andrew I hope you do it’s a great kit 👍
I have had the MONOGRAM 1/48 PRO MODELER CATALINA sitting in my stash for years.
It needs a big shelf 👍
Nice work
Thank you for mind words 👍
Wow, great job. I wish I had your talent. My dad had a friend that flew the PBY during World War II.
Very kind words thank you, true hero’s, it’s extremely brave to fly slow moving aircraft with enemy fire popping all around you. Model making whilst enjoyable also create moments of reflection and appreciation 👍
Awesome. Congrats.
Thank you much appreciated 👍
Bravo , great job!
Very kind sir - thank you 👍
Nice build mate!
Thank you 👍
keep up the good work
100% going to do that - thank you
