    You can also carefully use a cotton swab w/ alcohol and gently clean the wire that can be seen inside the slot. Even though the air is filtered, it is not pure and will eventually dirty the wire that "senses" the air flow. I have "rejuvenated" my sensor numerous times w/o buying another. Having a spare is always a great idea too.

      Quick drying no residue electronics spray cleaner is always the best option though. You shouldn't be touching anything at all, there's very sensible and expensive stuff inside.

      Agreed, never touch the sensitive filaments, spray clean only using MAF cleaner, I use CRC MAF cleaner on my SLK.

      Yeah using cotton swabs is a bad idea use mass airflow sensor cleaner it’s not going to break the bank you’re being cheap for no reason

    The screws are called pentalobe security if you want to search for the proper tool (they are not torx). I hacksawed a slot into my screws to remove (and reinstall) them quick and easy with nowt more than a flatblade.

      D5 is a T10, so a little different. My MAF sensor looks as though it's moulded in place. It's not, but how it comes apart is anyone's guess. I shall try twisting it tomorrow!

    highly interesting!. the fact that you've googled that particular number and its shown you the various different cars that they use the same maf sensor on. I've only just broken mine now on my Hyundai coupe which is why I'm checking out the different vids to get different ideas. I touched a wire ever so gently with a screw driver and it broke away. now the car runs like a lemon. Lol. best vid so far. top notch!

    You can also break off the little nib in the security screw with a thin screwdriver and use a normal torx to undo.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  8 років тому +1

      The nib isn't the problem, it's the fact it's a 5 star torx as opposed to a regular 6 star.
      There's ways around it though as you can see.

    parryrocks11 second agoI have just replaced the MAS on my 2001 V70. It no runs perfectly. Before it was hesitating when pulling away and under load, and throttle pedal felt a bit unresponsive. I had tried cleaning the MAS with MAF spray cleaner, but it is not easy has most of it is enclosed. The slightest dirt or oil on the sensor will cause it to send a weak mixture message to the brain.

    It may not be this simple. They all use the same part, but the parts may be programmed differently for different cars (manufacturer-specific output versus flow curve). I once looked into buying these 100 at a time and offering custom programming to fit whatever car the customer had.

      The pcm controls most of the electronic modules on the vehicle. The Maf just relays air density by heating a signal wire to tell the pcm how much fuel to start the engine . If cold starts are cranking longer the maf is dirty.

    I have a really old school MAF that needs replaced in a 1987 Suzuki G10T engine. My ONLY option is buying junkyard MAFs which are a rare score and $150. Trouble is mine looks a lot different. Its got a big flapper on it and a big boxy housing. Says Suzuki right on it. Maybe I should take it apart and see whats inside? Does this change the tune of my engine changing out to a different MAF? I'm probably overthinking this...

    I removed my screws by cutting a slot with a hacksaw and using a flat blade screwdriver.
    Then I cleaned the insert using brake cleaner and a Q tip and ruined it.
    I've found that unless you're buying a Chinese knockoff it's no cheaper to buy the insert than it is to buy the whole MAF.

      You should never use something to clean the sensor, only a clean spray will work,and not brake cleaner by the way.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  5 років тому +1

      Your reading sounds healthy enough and if it rises and falls in line with engine speed, the sensor itself is unlikely to be at fault.

    • @teravolt6113
      @teravolt6113 5 років тому

      @@sirobb Oh well, mine showed 12.75g/s at idle with a 1.2 naturally aspirated petrol engine and rised and fell together with engine speed too, but the car still jerked a lot in low rpm and high load. Got a matching second hand MAF assembly, disassembled the probe from the housing with the pentalobe torx and repeatedly cleaned both the IAT thermistor and the thin film sensing element repeatedly alternating between spraying them with canned isopropyl alcohol and wiping them with paper tissues, fitted that replacement probe to the car's MAF housing and now the engine no longer jerks under load, and it has much greater torque in the lowest gears...

    These MAF sensors are big rip off by the manufacturers, I recently priced up one for a zafira B and it was 300 pounds, needless to say I didn´t buy it. I went for a second hand one for 50 pounds. I have seen others for different models for as low as 30 pounds new, God even the BMW, and Mercedes ones were cheaper than the Zafira. I don´t understand why they are so expensive

    • @teravolt6113
      @teravolt6113 5 років тому

      Because that stuff is built to very close tolerance in order to allow the most precise measurement. The most expensive part is not the body, but the probe inside. The probe can apparently be bought separately from Pierburg, at least for my Bosch 0 280 218 031.
