  • Choosing a name in both English and Chinese can be tricky if you're new to the culture. You may have heard some pretty silly English names from your Chinese friends, but our Western friends tend to have equally silly names in Chinese! On this episode, we break down how to choose a name, some do's and don't and give you some advice on not having a Chinese name as silly as Jorge's.

      HelloChinese I'm still very new but I find saying "Wo shi Shannon" to be weird. Should I pick a Chinese name to use just here if I am introducing myself to a Chinese person? My name translates to Xiangnong, but it's a river. Sounds like Shannon tho, is that ok? Lol

      This is glorious, been searching for "learning powerful methods to build your Chi energy" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Fellmeroni Rudimentary Chi - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy got cool results with it.

    Actually in the West (Europe and Middle East), if it's not semitic names (from Bible, Torah or Quran), they always have some translations in their native languages, like in chinese. It's just we've lost the tradition of caring what they mean. I mean some people still do, but the majority just doesn't care.
    Great video btw, I hope you release more of these, really fun and useful. And I'm still using your app too, it's very convenient, thanks for all your work!

    Thank you for your interesting videos. I have a question, if you don't mind.
    Given that ethnic minority people in China do use polysyllabic last and given names, why can't we just live with the fact that we are foreigners and use polysyllabic nouns? Why is 2-syllable last name and a 3 syllable given name a problem?

    i've come up with the name 慕蓍 mù shī. my English name is Yarrow (the name of a plant), which is 蓍 in Chinese. the problem is that 牧師 "Christian priest" is also mù shī 😖. is this a problem? should I choose a second character?
    for the second character, would using a character for a landscape like 阪 "hillside" or 蘢 "water weeds" be 奇怪?
    and if the second character is an adjective, like 細 "fine", should it come before or after 蓍?

    你好, 我叫马丽丽 😊 it sounds a bit like my English name, Lizzie, and "ma" is the beginning of my surname, Marsden

    My Arabic name means in English "Promise" so I translated it to Mandrain Chinses and got the word 诺言, is it weird to make it my Chinese name?

    • @HelloChineseApp
      @HelloChineseApp  7 років тому +5

      Kind of. It's better not use a solid word for a name.

      Actually just use the character 诺, and then pick another character. Usually a single character is enough to convey the meaning and it'll be more poetic than weird.

    I just moved to China a couple months ago and so I didn't have a Chinese name. My teacher thought 艾琳 would be a great name, do you think it's a good name?
    对了,Jorge, 你是哪国人?
    谢谢你!

    • @HelloChineseApp

      艾琳is a nice name. It just sounds a little bit like a "foreigner" Chinese name. haha. But Chinese might have that name too. Jorge是美国人。

    我名叫水宫 is it weird? Because my father gave me that name, but I couldn't figure out what is the meaning of my name.. 😊

      水宫 is not weird. Literally it means "water and palace". But for me, I personally feel it's more like a Japanese name.

    What about 恩典 for a name?

    • @HelloChineseApp
      @HelloChineseApp  7 років тому +1

      不太好。恩典 is a word, which means "favour, bestow". Most words are not good for name. Compare to 恩典,the single character 恩 is perfect for name and has the same meaning.
