      Wonderful use of Google Earth for navigation and it works fine on Windows 10. But can it be done on Android (ver 5.1.1) on my Samsung Pro Tab 12? Once I open the first "collarless" chart, the ENC chart outlines disappear. So I can only open one chart. Suggestions appreciated.

    I'll just come out and say what is on everyone's mind: Is there a way to map google maps satellite views to OpenCPN ? (weatherfax plugin can do this?)

    • @StarpathNav
      @StarpathNav  5 років тому +2

      Yes there is, but you have to use an older version of Google Earth. This is explained in the plugin section at opencpn.org. I have read it there, but have not tried it as we have only the latest GE and it will not work with that. Alternatively, and a bit more work but more versatile, is, as you propose, to use weatherfax plug in to georeference a screencap from Google Earth. To do this set up the GE screen to show what you want, then screen cap it. There are a couple approaches. One is just turn on the grid view so you have lat-lon on the image to execute the geo reference, or leave the grid off and drop a pin in two opposite corners whose lat-lon you know and then use those two for the red and green georeference marks. We have videos online showing that process of georeferencing.

    Mr. David I tried doing this but with using the new link on that site that is in location of where you clicked your location and it wasn't working properly. I unchecked the file on the menu of Google Earth to go back to original G.E. mapping and now it is blurred out. Will not clear up. Any ideas as to what happened here or how to fix it?

      I do not know of others that will show on Google Earth. You can see all official charts available worldwide at www.iho.int/srv1/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=393&Itemid=424&lang=en. OpenCPN is a good way to view charts. At their site www.opencpn.org check the chart resources tab for a list of charting options.

      Hi James. I am not sure what is happening. I just now (apr 15, 2018)downloaded the second link in the description, then right clicked it, and said open in GE Pro, it did that, showed the outlines on the globe and when i click collared or collarless view it nicely shows the chart. this is also macbook pro using chrome. must be some preferences setting that is blocking it.

    GREAT video, and tool! Toward the end, you show downloading the chart, but when i did this, when I opened Google Earth again, it downloaded it again. So, my question is, how do I let google Earth know that i have it already on my pc, and don't need it to be downloaded again, when previewing it. It seems to want to download it every time i view them.

    • @StarpathNav
      @StarpathNav  8 років тому +2

      They typically download to "Temporary Places" location when first run, and if you do not save these to "My Places" they are lost, and you have to start from scratch. I think it should ask you to save these if you close without doing so.

      Yes, it still works. Once you have file on your computer, then open Google Earth and just drag the file to the screen, or maybe just double click the KMZ file and it will load into GE. Then save when closing GE.

On their latest trip down the Mississippi they had a google street view camera on the boat for the whole trip, one end to the other, and we will shorty have a google street view of the whole river. see oarnorthwest.com PS. if the new link from last comment does not work right, please let us know.

I am tied up now but will try again... after deleting the one we have stored in GE that works. or right click it and say open with GE.

    This is a great way to merge satellite photo data with NOAA charts. What I was not able to do is download the charts in order to view them offline. The download has .bsb and .kap files, but Earth uses .kmz and .kml file types. Is there a trick to be able to download and view this offline?

    • @StarpathNav
      @StarpathNav  9 років тому

      +Ted Owens. Many navigators want them in that format so they can be loaded into an echart program for viewing and navigation. One popular free tool for that is from opencpn.org. If you do not have that type of need, then you can go to the NOAA web site and download a hi-res pdf of the chart. One short cut to get to the downloads is www.starpath.com/getcharts . This GE tool does not expedite that link to the specific charts, but you can learn what the chart number is that you might want, and that will save time on the direct download.
      But maybe i misunderstand your question. If you want to save the images they show here, then open up the my places link to the data section of this noaa package, and there you can actually store the image they are overlaying. It cannot be stored as an offline graphic, but you can copy and rename that one component of the kmz package then paste it separately into my places, for later quick view of just that chart. As i recall, you can then even delete the main noaa section and it will leave that one image overlay to view as needed.

      @@StarpathNav Thanks for that. Disappointing. How about WWII-era Japanese charts? During WWII, Korea was a colony of Japan so they'd want to know where it was safe to maneuver their submarines. Are WWII charts available? I'm interested in knowing where 250-foot depths exist, not 25 feet. I understand that the depth at the continental shelf is 250 feet, but I need more than averages.

    • @StarpathNav
      @StarpathNav  5 років тому

      Sorry, i do not know more. Major change in slope at the shelf is more like at 100 fathoms (600 ft) on average, worldwide. This can be studied worldwide very well with Google Earth. Set it up to show "elevation" in the status bar, bottom right. Depths will be a negative number.
