    Just had a chance to see the reviews of this early video! I see a lot of folks who were unhappy about the presentation and i have to agree it was not choreographed, and it could indeed be more productive if rehearsed, so i apologize to them. I hope to make a more focused presentation as soon as we can. This excellent navigation program deserves it. We have a couple projects in front of us, then we will come back to this. For now, I have to fall back to Mark Twain's defense, "If i had more time i would have written less."

      We slowly have a start on replacing these earlier ones. They are in the OpenCPN playlist, check latest entries. Will try to take on fewer subjects.

    Thanks you so much for your teaching. This is the first time I installed OpenCPN. As you say if this is for a begginer that is HOW you teach. People always have to say bad about something as I read the last comment 1 year ago by Joe and others. This is free teaching guys. Why negative comments for someone that invest time and patience to teach? Should be a shame of your thoughts!

    One more question, I have the GPS/Glonass dongle, can I use that with my windows laptop or even my pc? And if so, and you happen to know how that's done, or better yet, to save you the trouble, if you know of a tutorial on how to set that up, like additional needed software or maybe it just works without anything more? thanks again

    You must specify which countries this chart is useful for FIRST.mOST PEOPLE do NOT LIVE IN THE USA,,,,,,,,

      OpenCPN does not include charts, but OpenCPN is useful for any countries for which you can get charts. It comes pre-configured to help you download charts for many countries in Europe, South America, etc. primarily from the government oceanographic service. Note that some countries do not provide charts for all platforms, e.g. you cannot get official Canadian charts for android, and they may not be free. Open CPN doesn't support private chart services such as Navionics as far as I know.

    Why are you getting such rave reviews on this video?
    #1.Nothing was planned out.
    #2. You seem to be on a "Hit or Miss" search for the right places to go.
    #3. You are continually going to the wrong place and in the process of confusing
    anyone who is trying to keep up with your insanity.
    #4. Please tell me you are not one of the instructors for this course.

    It seems they have taken the opposite of your suggestion. The maps are still not listed with their chart numbers in the downloader in OpenCPN5.0, and the chart numbers seem to have been cropped off of raster files for the two maps I downloaded ("San Juan Channel" and "Strait of Georgia and Strait of Juan de Fuca").

    Good that you introduce this excellent program - but it would be nice if you had prepared you a little better ... and had a clear structure in the presentation. Sailing greetings from Paul

      Paul Eric Lantzer agreed. really cool that he covers this, but it could be a lot clearer and shorter with the same info if it was a bit more structured.

    I have downloaded the chart Charlston Harbor in SC but the chart outline is not showing up Can you explain why please?

    • @StarpathNav
      @StarpathNav  6 років тому

      Hard to tell what might be wrong. But with this tool installed, *all* NOAA charts should show up as outlines on the globe, and each will also be listed in the Places tab on the left, organized by chart scale. Then you can click one of those or the outline to display the chart. When you click a chart from that index, you get a choice to show it with a "collar" or without a "collar" Maybe that is the issue. the "collar" is essentially an outline or boarder of the chart.

    I couldn't find an android version on opencpn.org, so I got mine from the play store. They had 2, one for $9.99 and one free, I was unable to find the difference so, got the free one (go figure). I clicked on charts and see no indication of a "downloader" anywhere. Can someone please help?

    • @StarpathNav
      @StarpathNav  6 років тому

      To get the expected functionality of OpenCPN on Android you will need the pruchased version. We ourselves and others we know have done so and have been very pleased with the product.

    Thank you for creating this tutorial. Lots of people are complaining about the lack of structure, but you are one of the few OpenCPN tutorials even on UA-cam. Could it have been a little more clear? Sure. But I still found a lot of value in it.

    Just want to say thanks David. I've watched most of your video's and have come to appreciate both there content and the time and effort you have gone to in order to share what you know with us. Yes you have a unique way of delivering this at times and that seems to be a challenge for some of us but I don't see any of those people making the negative remarks sharing what they know as you are. Thanks again and good on you mate! Regards Dave M from Melbourne, Australia.

      Thanks for your encouragement. We have started a new sequence on OpenCPN that is much more direct. In our own classroom teaching we think it can be beneficial to make the typical mistakes and then show how to reason through the solution, but it seems this is not a good approach for youtube so I am trying to tighten up the program going forward.

    Hi, I got the free program as you are using, and two things..1) the wrench and two other options were all there were along the top to choose from, and not near the amount yours shows. Also, I followed all your directions to a Tee and all seemed to go well until I went to view the downloaded charts, and all I have is the original blank map with no indication anything was added at all, but they were added.
    I don't want to get the paid version as this one has frozen on me a few times where nothing worked and I had to restart the whole thing several times, so I need to see if things smooth out once I learn to use it. I'm using a Samsung tab 2. Any ideas why the charts aren't showing for me? thanks for any help.

    • @StarpathNav

      The most important part of my answer has to be that i am using the computer version, not the Android. That is true of all of my videos on OpenCPN. There is a Mac and a PC computer version, and these two work essentially the same. There are some differences with plugins, but basic programs on the computer are the same. On the Android (there is no iOS that i know of), there are two versions. A pay version (~$10) and a free version. I have not worked with these much at all, but one time decided that we had to have the pay version to get the expected functionality of the computer version, or near it. This was a while ago, but we gave up on the free Android version very quickly. Maybe things have changed.
      The number of items in the main menu can be user selected. Right click on any of the buttons to see the options. However, you will get more of these icons as you add plugins. The extra ones i have on the right represent various plugins that are enabled.
      As for the charts, please look over the video again to maybe spot missing steps.... but this was for computer version, not tablet. Once the charts are downloaded, you do still have to go to the wrench then Charts and be sure the directory is listed that includes the charts. If charts still do not show up using a computer version, then post a note and i will look at the video to see if there is something we can add to help with that.
      Again, for tablet use, i think you will have to use the paid one, and i think you can feel confident that it will work for you. Another option is load one of the computer versions and practice with that till you are comfortable.

      Actually, i just realized that we need some clean up here. this one called part 1 is not the most basic. Look at the set of 4 or so videos called chart opencpn. we have a playlist on opencpn: ua-cam.com/play/PLx1XvLdpAhGAJqkkGoK7_PQQct2dS36Kg.html

      Ok, thank you very much, David, a very helpful reply. At only $10, and judging from your past experience, probably best I start with getting the paid version, and then try again, and if necessary use the steps you suggest.
