The instructor's approach simplifies the material and makes it easy to understand. His recommendations prevented me from spending hundreds of dollars on unnecessary equipment that complicated things more. Should we ever cross paths, I'll gladly buy you a drink. Thanks, Northeast Marine Institute, for this video.
I have always had a fear of triangles. You cured me in ten minutes flat ! Within five minutes of watching this Iwas using triangles with confidence. I am a keen amateur sailor but have been a teacher (of English) forfifteen years. I can honestly say this is the best piece of teaching I've seen in a very long time. Many thanks Captain Jeff.
I wish I had watched this yesterday before I bought the "Weems" roller plotter. Back to West Marine to exchange for triangles. Thank you for a great clear explanation.
Weems & Plath just gained another sale of two triangles, lol!! Super easy to follow and the accuracy gain really makes using triangles a no-brainer. Thanks for a great video, you got a new subscriber in me!
Nice lesson! Just FYI for anyone watching this - only 1 triangle is necessary. The demos here used 2 triangles, but the examples could be done with a straight edge (ruler, etc) substituting for the second triangle. This would save the cost of having to have buy a second triangle just to be able to parallelize movements around a chart.
I still have my Iversen and Weilback parallel ruler from 1963 when I graduated Copenhagen Navigation School. It has served me well over many years. It has, though now worn somewhat, a couple of very thin "cork" pads on the bottom of each half which keeps it from sliding unintentionally.
Wow. I just picked up a set of navigation tools on ebay, and was mostly interested in the slidebar... But since the set also had triangles I figured I should look up how those are used, and this video has sold me on them. Nice work Capt. Jeff!
Just a tip that is a habit of mine that I'm keen to share. For plotting a course or bearings with triangles, place your pencil on the point you're starting on or taking a bearing of and place the triangle touching the pencil. Then run the triangle up keeping the focal point on the meridian so it twists to line up on your course. They are great and should be the standard plotting tool on all ships. Love the American enthusiasm
I have always found a roller plotter or parallel ruler to be a nuisance to use because of slippage. Your excellent video convinced me to get a pair of protractor triangles.
I will be looking into using triangles now! Thanks. In your example, you could have opened up the parallel ruler to full extension and use the "inside" edges. But triangles are easier.
At the 8:30 mark you use the second triangle to move the first triangle away from the plotted course to get to the meridian. Might it have been more accurate to hold the second triangle on the plotted course and then slide the first triangle until it's converging lines meet on a meridian. This would allow you to visually check that the first triangle is both directly on the plot line and the converging points line up at the meridian. You could only do it this way if your course is at least somewhat off of due North or south.
I've not used triangles until I saw this video. Thought I'd buy some and give them a try. Looks like I've got a drawer full of stuff to go on eBay now. I'm converted.
Three of my favrite plotting tools are the triangles and the portland course plotter and the vector master, mainly for speed and distance. Reson is simple, they are both vey qwick and easy to use. The only additon i have to make are plotting sheets to help fix a positon on a chart from a gps. so that i do not have to read the side and top scale on the chart. Gerard . QLD AUSTRALIA.
Often times in drafting the edges are beveled with a hollow under the running surface or with dimples to raise the pattern such that ink can not touch the close fit surfaces and wick down the length of your work leaving a massive puddle. I could not tell the direction of the bevel well in the video, but that is one reason for providing a bevel if on the underneath. The knobs may be on the wrong side for that possible answer to fit the situation though.
Well done and what I was looking for comparing plotting tools. Do you do online ASA 105? I did not find you when I looked and what I am taking is not as clear as this.
Jeff, a very informative video, thanks. But, can you tell me something, do i have to get those sorts of tattoos you have on your arms to be a 'proper' sailor?
Yes, this technique plots True - the protractor is much more accurate than squinting at the compass rose on the chart, as shown in the video. You then just need to do the math (TVMDC) to calculate the compass course.

never seen the "2 triangle" method but it looks good, i always use parallel rules with 24" ruler, or "Protractor with line" i find the protractor with line is very easy because u can mark on the protractor your Dev and Cor and plot

Love this guy. Love when he says “oh no it doesn’t reach!” Every time I’m navigating on charts and it doesn’t reach I hear his voice in my head.

very interesting.. I just became involved with plotting courses, and I find triangles better than all other gadgets that I purchased .

Amazingly clear and helpful video Capt Jeff, thanks very much!

Nice work Capt. Jeff!
Happy to help! thank you sailor

Capt. Jeff, YOU'RE AWESOME!!! THANK YOU!!!
Been using parallels since I was a kid, this old dog learned a new trick. Thanks :)
Everyone needs professor like u...thnxx a lot...

I had to search for this one so thanks for putting it out there, saved me from sweating in class tonight! Cheers
Excellent video. Thanks Captain Jeff. That was very helpful.
I found even better way- ECDIS. Joking! Thanks for this useful lesson!
Thank you for a crystal clear presentation.
Capt Jeff - you have just saved my bacon on a Yachtmaster Course! Thanks a bunch!!!
Hey Cap. Your roll bar has it's own protractor! ;-)
Your voice is so soothing.
Thank you for a simple explanation of a plottimg!!!👍🏻
I will be looking into using triangles now! Thanks.

Great Video. It's obvious that you know what you are talking about. I would love to see you give more instructional videos. Thanks
Excellent instruction as always!! Best on the net!!
Nice Capt ... its very usefull ... thank you
Great video! This will be extremely helpful in comparing the 3 tools to my Midshipmen.
Thank you for sharing this video sir! You explained these techniques very well!
Nice video.. I am triangle user, It is the best way to plotting :D

Yes. Neatly done. I'm sold that.
Excellent presentation, I struggle with the slide rules so hopefully this will help, especially rolling around at sea.

Nice an clear. Thanx Capt. 👍 U learned me to use triangels 👏🙂👍
super n simple tutorial by capt. jeff , thanks !
Lots of thanks for your clear explanation!

You are awesome, Sir!
Swapping my parallels for another triangle stat!! Thank you! (Does the mermaid have a name? I jealous!"
Very helpful and clearly explained.
Thank you, Captain
Very informative and clear!
A very informative video
Very useful. Thanks Captain.
I believe a "combination" of all these tools would be the Power and Sail Squadron ruler... Easy cheap and precise.... Just my 2 cents :-)
Very clear and concise
Very clear explanation. :) Thank-you.
Thank you very much ❤
First video and subscribe right away. Your a 💎 very informative.
Thanks, Captain!

Great Instructor.
Any chance you have a video that describes how to predict the bearing and range of a light when abeam to starboard?
WWow loved the insturction!!1
Check out the Portland plotter....
Terrific! Thanks!
Thank you. This was a big help. I had wondered if there was something better than parallel rules.
awesome, helped me to recalled how to use it again. thks
I always like to use triangle ruler 😀
Jeff, a very informative video, thanks. But, can you tell me something, do i have to get those sorts of tattoos you have on your arms to be a 'proper' sailor?
Its kind of necessary. Also a pipe.
thank you capt more power!

Very well explanation
where can I aquire all these peices of equipment?
Well done.
The triangles give the course True, what if the question asks for magnetic course? Do you have you use the Compass Ross for that?
Yes, this technique plots True - the protractor is much more accurate than squinting at the compass rose on the chart, as shown in the video. You then just need to do the math (TVMDC) to calculate the compass course.
Have you heard of the Breton plotter ?
Interesting .. i want to learn this

Nice explanations
Whats the scale of that chart youve used sir?
Good job
Thanks! Im a new convert
bingo! Now i know it and can use for only ten minutes of watching
thanks for that, video
Capt. Sylvia just wants to sell triangles haha
The hell? That is so awesome!
Those tech. ❤️
where can i buy a good quality one ? i tried ebay and the quality was shit..... i prefer using this over parallel ruler for plotting...

4:25 How to use the triangles.
People that smack while they talk gets on my nerves. But a good instructive video.
Lmaooo i scrolled through my liked videos and this is my first liked video O,O
Rulers are way less confusing.
This guy's pretty funny.
... and informative, we hope ...
OH NO IT DOESN'T REEAACCHHHH.
Looks like you only need one triangle for everything you just did.
"bada bing bada boom"
So, the point is, that triangles are superior and everything else sucks
