    Shooting Anamorphic always brings a smile to my face. 😃Everything you point your camera at truly looks so much more "cinematic." 🛒Great Joy 50mm Anamorphic: geni.us/GreatJoy50 link for the 35mm pre-release is in the description. Have you shot anamorphic before and what lenses did you use? Lemme know! 👇

    I definitely prefer them way over the Sirui also big fan of less anamorphic lens flair

      Yeah, they definitely have a better squeeze factor of 1.8x instead of only 1.3x for some of them. And yeah, sometimes the blue lens streak is over the top so it’s nice how subtle these are!

      I guess most of you arguing about the Sirui flaring too much are referring to the first badge, sold under the crowd fundung campaign, never having owned one.
      Lens from this bagde were truly over the top.
      I got my Surui 50mm full frame T2.9 early this year (2022), and it is flaring less than some other spherical lens when hit unintentionally with bright light.
      And you need the light hit the lens right into the front to get the blue lens flares. Take a look at this test shots, and you will see what I mean: ua-cam.com/video/u4vRaQ6YMDw/v-deo.html
      I also like the crisp sparpness of the lens which I can always bring down in post when required (instead of the other way round).
      And, mostly underrated, the squeeze factor of 1.6 is perfect for open gate shooting (which only few cameras do support), resulting in the 1:2.39 DCI delivery aspect ratio.
      So, without drawing any comparative conclusion with the GreatJoy lens, I am more than happy with my Sirui.

    the squeeze ratio is not the same at close focus (1,6x) and infnity (1,8x) for the 50mm, and you didn't take that into account apparently, it seems. the girl seems squeezed a bit when at close focus. but great footage you shot !

    The weight to image quality always matters for solo shooters, why buy an entry level Sony with shitty color science in the first place, when you’re not even gonna use its advantages which are a light footprint and ease of use.
    Also about that huge matte box, most videographers/DPs I know with such a thing don’t even care about flares. Then you even have to remove that thing when changing lenses, losing one of its few advantages over using filter thread NDs

    I love the distortion these give. The 35mm is one of the few affordable anamorphics I've seen that does that fishbowl thing at the edges, where the horizontal movement gets kinda weird. That and the barrel distortion are things I love, and one of the main ways the Sirui lenses were too clean.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Рік тому

      That’s interesting, a lot of people are trying to avoid any type of distortion. Usually I try to avoid it also, but anamorphics provide such a unique look!

    • @KnapfordMaster98
      @KnapfordMaster98 Рік тому +2

      @@chadwin Absolutely, I think it depends on what aspects of anamorphics you like. Some people want the bokeh and flares without the distortion. For me, I can't get enough of that Close Encounters look where you pan on a wide angle and things move at a different speed as they near the edge. Such a classic look.

    Thanks for this overview and footage, they look really good for the price, definitely much more up my street than the Siruis, apart from the name! Having EF/PL mount is a major plus for me. The 35mm definitely does a way better job than the Sirui 1.6x for subject separation. Looks like it'd be best to use diopters for close focus on the 50mm, maybe worth trying?

    is it me or few footage look wobbly like when you are using the PP warp stabilizer at 100% (3:31)

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Рік тому

      Yeah, I see what you mean. It was all shot handheld at 60fps then slowed down to 24fps so it smooths it out, but it still has the wobble of my handheld camera movements. I don’t think I used any warp stabilizer

      @@chadwin ho waw okay, I should check if I get the same results with my fx6...would you say that it could be from the lens this kind of distortion ?

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Рік тому

      @@Mansourmelouli yeah. I think some of it comes from the lens, and also the IBIS. But mostly just being handheld and wide angle that’s causing a warped/wobble look

    If you had to choose between the 35mm or the 50 which would you go with?

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Рік тому

      Honestly, I’d probably go with the 50mm cause the squeeze, flares, bokeh and compression looks the best and most clearly anamorphic.

      @@chadwin What if you were using a S35 sensor though...
      I'm STILL torn about Great Joy, Vazen, or Laowa lol.. if these were just a little faster to give more bokeh definition... it definitely go with this.. probably in 35mm... but I'm still thinking Vazen.. I can get a used 40mm for $2k... just concerned about the coverage.. wish it was S35 PL mount instead of MFT... Vazen does make FF PL now.. but they're waaay more expensive

  • @DethronerX
    @DethronerX 2 роки тому +3

    Undertandable why they are cheaper. Light, not much anamorphic looks like beautiful bokeh, flares, distortions, fringing and is rather just like a wide lens that squeezes image and has some hints of Anamorphic characteristics, but is otherwise a very clinically correct image. Anything less than 2x squeeze is a No for my use at least.

      You're right about 'not being for you', looking at the videos on your channel.
      Sorry for being that rude, but I am fed up with all those stupid comments on YT on things from people who never had the thing they are judging about in their hands.
      If you want a wide shot from any anamorphic lens 1.6 or. 1.8, just film in C4K and desqueeze it to get beyond the aspect ratio limitations of most monitors and all TV-screens on the market.

      @@joyoffilming9500 I didn't mean to diss the lens or your video, it just happens to haveb less of what i was looking for, but definitely not talking about the quality, just the distortions and bokeh and flares, really.
      Im aware of my videos sucking, really, so I have nothing to justify for or defend and you're right about me talking about something i haven't personally experienced and I understand your anger about it. Im basically looking for 1.5x or 2x squeeze and only by judging from videos on UA-cam. These things arent really cheap so i have to buy what i prefer.

      @@DethronerX Yeah, I agree that a Cooke or Angenieux anamorphic lens might be the more professional option. But also for me, this will remain out of budget for the rest of my life.
      Anyway, I made very nice experience just with a 1.33 anamorphic lens on my older iPhone 8. From my experience, its not the blueish flares, it's not the bokeeh, its the immersive wide aspect ration without loosing resolution.
      For example, coming back to my owned Sirui (this is the only one I can talk about from my own experience), when I shoot open gate at 5.4K resolution, after desqueezing I end up with a resolution of 8,64 K in aspect ratio of DCI 2.39 which looks amazingly great on my monitor screen.
      If you do the same math with a 4K 4:3 video from your phone, only assuming a 1.33 lens in front of it, you end up at 5.32 K a little less wider, but, I bet you will love it over the regular shooting mode.
      this is the way I personally got addicted to anamorphic.
      Keep on trying and making your experiences and keep up your passion for filming!

      @@joyoffilming9500 Sirui both for phone and camera should be good for blue flare. You think an anamorphic that takes a base lens can give better options for aperture? If it's 50mm or 85 or something opened up and with the anamorphic in front. I know it would be a pain to focus twice but I'd only try out for tripod shots for some scenes. Right now what I CAN afford is Magic Portrait for camera or Sirui for phone . Magic Portrait isn't available currently, but I hope it's back on ebay. I know the image is not the best, but for an Instagram video or something, should be fun. Thanks for the info, I'll check back here when I do get a proper lens. I just ordered a K3 with super16 conversion so that's also what I'm waiting to test out. Has m42 mount now
