I love your videos, Luke, and how free and expressive your work is. I work tightly using pencils and would love to loosen up and enjoy the process more, so I'm trying to get into oil painting but it's difficult to switch mindsets. Look forward to seeing more of your content!
Thank you! Its a big struggle for me to loosen up as well so I defiantly feel you there. you should give oils a try, I've never looked back. best of luck!
Thank you for your recommendations! Yes, as artists we need to get loose and trust the process. Though it may get complicated with the pressure. In these cases, the simple thing I remind myself is that "the painting is not over, until I decide that it is over." This is the magic of oil painting; one brush stroke can change everything. By the way, do you paint with gloves because it is healthier? I have never painted with gloves, and I was curious to hear your insights.
Your 100% right. I do really like that method of thinking and will remember it! I definitely use gloves and would never not use them. Oil paint is very toxic and can be absorbed through your skin. I also find it gets everywhere. a pair of gloves and apron alow me to just drop what I'm doing and not have to worry about tracking oil paint all over the house.
I feel like this with most of my paintings. I’ve done many pet portraits. I’ve worked from terrible photos. Which ends up being frustrating and causes anxiety 😟. Great video! What type of brushes do you use?
The painting itself probably takes 8-12 hours depending. This includes making a rough draft, premixing my palette, prepping the board, painting and then varnishing.
It turned out great!
But very recognizable, starting again the next day with different eyes
Thanks Astrid!
Fresh eyes are so important! I forget sometimes how useful it is to just leave and come back to the painting.

Its very difficult to work with bad reference photos, I feel you there. They are Rosemary and Co. Ivory synthetic long flats :)
How much time do you take for a painting this size??
