Very cool! Much better than your previous attempt and the result was worth it. The screen is amazing. The kids of today will never understand how we didn’t know better in the 90’s and how we strained our eyes playing in the dark with no backlight some days ha ha. I’m definitely going to try ordering one of these screens. The only thing I don’t like on your transparent case is that the new screen has that white protruding piece behind the Gameboy logo. My OCD does not approve: ha ha, but it looks great in general

That 3D printed part that holds the IPS display actually make the Game Boy logo be totally readable.

Haha, yeah, I realized that, too. Not too fond of the replacement case I got, though, plastic seems to be quite brittle and the measurements are not 100% accurate. Might get another one sometime.

I just ordered one. I was always scared to try out the usual backlight stuff cause, u know, using a razorblade to peel of layers from a screen while making sure not to damage the white ribbon cable and the screen itself didn't sound like big fun to me...
But this looks way easier and since I'm not a total noob with electronics, I'm gonna give it a try!
That's one of the reasons I was so excited about this. It's really quite easy to do, especially compared to the traditional backlight mods and the result is just amazing.
@@JanBeta I probably prefer this over the "traditional" method even if the new LCD screen had the same picture quality. But damn, the picture is way better compared to a backlight bivert mod!!
also, afaik I have at least one DMG lying around with horizontal screen lines. Those can't be fixed like you can do with vertical lines. Looks like this DMG gets a new life!
I've read several times now that a certain modder is working on 1:1 screens, both for the DMG and for the Pocket. I'm really excited for these, if the rumors happen to be true!

I think an amber display would look cooler. Like the old amber CRTs ( amber was always better than green IMO). Good job tho.
I have a amber serial terminal that i use to configure stuff sometimes (just because i can), its so easy on the eyes, could stare at that way longer than a modern LCD.
You can set it to yellow or green if you want the old CRT feel. Maybe an interesting idea for a themed case (like an old IBM style or something).

The one thing I have thought of is if the original DC-DC converter can supply these IPS screens properly. 40mA to 100mA is 2.5x more load. It is also still generating -19v for the original screen. I think just generating 5v may save some more battery power. Maybe a more efficient design for the 5v too? I shall see.
I am still skeptical of messin' with gameboys it's almost like it has small parts that can easily get broken or one slip and nothing will work right. Either way I guess there are mods today that make it way better, you inspire me to actually refurbish my old brick now. Keep it up Jan!

Oh damn, that screen is very nice. Power usage is decent considering it's got a backlight in it! Better to have a gameboy that uses twice the (miniscule) power than one that you can't see for s**t.
I wish there was a screen that was twice as big. I'd like to mod the casing so that a huge screen would fit in it.
Also wish for stereo speakers on GB, GBC and GBA
There was somebody a while back who worked on a VGA out mod for the Gameboy, too. Maybe another interesting option if you want a big screen. Don't know if the project ever got finished though.

OMG I thought I was bad with electronics when I damaged the flatflex to the screen, but it seems even the great can make mistakes. I'm so relieved. (My flatlex damage though, it still works, but it has a fracture that does still conduct, but I'm waiting for the day it breaks)
Haha, my guess is that many of the people that made videos about the classic backlight mods needed more than one try and didn’t tell anybody. No shame in failing. I think it would be more shameful not to try.

I know it is a matter of taste, or lack of taste :-P but I never liked, still don't like, will never like and don't understand why people like those clear see through case shells (no matter wich product it is) Apart from that: I like your video's! Hi Jan, I purchased the same kit V2 a while back. I was wondering the glass screen you installed, is it a custom one for the LCD kit or a standard size? My kit from console5 didnt came with one and im not sure what glass screen to purchase. Thanks
It‘s a standard size one. The display area of the kit is the same you get with the original screen. :)

Have you had any issues with the dpad or other buttons failing to contact properly?
Not at all so far. The contacts on my particular board seem to be gold plated, they should make better contact than the original graphite/carbon contacts even I guess.

I guess you didn't notice the board has 4 slots and the display has 4 tabs. Probably don't even need the bracket if you use that! :D
No, didn't notice that. The tutorials I was reading/watching didn't mention them either. I guess they make it easier to center the screen if you don't have the bracket. I don't think it makes much of a difference with the bracket in place.
Aw man, I've not long done the backlight/bivert mod on mine, now there's an option which is miles better :( Thanks Jan! lol. does this mod work on a GB Color? I might get one of them and do it on there instead.

There is a similar mod for the GB color that has been around for a bit longer even. This one only works on the classic DMG-01.

It was a coincidence, I swear! :D Yes, heard about the GBC screens, too. Don't have a GBC yet but I'm certainly considering getting one and modding it now.

I wonder if the “fake” multicolor mode is just reading the Super Gameboy palette information from the cartridge. Since based on the size of that ribbon cable, the new board is connected to the full system bus.
I don't think so as games look different on a real GBC that reads the color information. But it's definitely worth investigating what it actually does.
Jan Beta well shoot, the color palette in Super Mario Land 2 looked similar to the SGB (though it’s been a long time since I played it that way). I do agree that investigating it would be worthwhile.
Is there a mod for a high-contrast monochrome display like in the Game Boy Pocket?
I don't know of any. Would be interesting to see but I guess there's not too much demand.
@@JanBeta I do know that those displays can be connected to the standard DMG mainboard with some work. I would like to see a ready-made adapter board to make the process a bit easier.

Ha! My Gameboy fixing superpowers so far were limited to damaging the flatflex while trying to do backlight mods. :D

I haven’t really managed to run the batteries down yet, definitely works for a loooong time with those modern rechargeable ones.
the display has soldertabs, the PCB had holes for those tabs...
What Would be fair price for a game boy these days?
Mh, prices are all over the place I think. I got a working but crusty one from eBay for around 25€. If you only want one to replace the screen, you can try to find a broken one.
But Jan, don’t you want your käse to be yellow?

I wonder if there is a mod like this for the GBA. The form factor is way better and it plays all the older games. The screen was still crap though.
There are several IPS mods for the advance, you basically just replace the screen in them if I remember correctly. You only have to determine the PCB version you have because the connectors are different for each version.
Protip: use hot air to polish the spot where you trimmed the plastic so it doesn't show through the case.

They're really good batteries. Up there with eneloops, but at a fraction of the price.

Yes, and as I mentioned there’s also kits available that come with a pre-soldered new speaker. :)

Oh, the Game Gear often has capacitor issues, too, I think, not so trivial to replace.
Well still the original screen look more better than the new. Maybe I'm just the old fashion gamers.
I don't think, that the GameBoy Color mode is necessarily fake. Old GameBoy Games had colours in them even though the GameBoy couldn't use them. One famous example is Pokemon Blue where each city has its own colour, when you play it with a more modern console like e.g. a GameBoy Advance. It would be interesting to see if it looks the same way in this coloured mode
While this is true......can the original gameboy see any of that data?
@@awilliams1701 That's the question. He just replaced a whole board in the inside. It could be that that board converted the colour signal to grey. I don't know enough about the internal architecture to answer that.
Only some had a special color palette, not every gameboy game.
Good point. I assumed that the classic Gameboy just doesn't access the extra color data. Maybe worth investigating that.
@@JanBeta I just checked out the pictures in the eBay link in your description. There's one with pokemon yellow.
If u compare this with the start screen of pokemon yellow on the super gameboy, u can see that the colors are not the same.
For example, in the super gameboy startscreen, the "pika!" is yellow with a blue background.
In the eBay link, the "pika!" is yellow too but the background is black.
Also the cheeks of pikachu are red in the super gameboy, in the eBay link picture, it is more pink.

@@TheOldBoiler Theretrofuture doesn't know what he's doing and ends up destroying half of the items he comes in to contact with. He does have good production quality though. RetroGameTech is much better if you are actually looking for repair guides

don't toss the screen, keep it original till it dies, then it can serve the purpose of showing how it originally looked to kiddies
The old screen on this one was completely broken, but I still keep one stock Gameboy around to remind future generations.
Grundsätzlich schon interessant aber für $69.99 auch ein wenig zu teuer...
Ob sich das lohnt wo man auch für ein par Euro einen Gameboy DS kaufen kann weis ich nicht.
Wie gesagt bekommst du das Kit auch für knapp über 50€ direkt aus China. Und das Bild ist definitiv meilenweit besser als beim DS. Außerdem, hey, Nostalgie! ;)

Ja der Nostalgiefaktor ist bei dem Teil natürlich hoch, ich finde aber da gehört das Spiel mit dem Display um ein einigermaßen sichtbares Bild zu bekommen irgendwie dazu ;-)
Wait... you replaced the case, you replaced the screen, you replaced to boards.. You did not actually fix the old one, but you built a new one (besides the speake rand buttons?). :)
Btw, will probably never get what people find so great about the original Gameboy and why it was so successful back then. For me it always was way too fat, too wide, too long, too heavy and the display was unbearable. I consider the Gameboy Color the first usable handheld.
Oh, I only replaced the screen/d-pad board. The actual computer is still the same. And I guess I like the form factor because of nostalgic reasons. The original DMG-01 was what I had back in the day.
The Gameboy was extremely popular back then, in the late 1980's, because there really was nothing else like it at the time. The ability to play Nintendo games on something so small was amazing.

They are actually really decent (at least for the price). Some tech people even suspect they are rebranded Panasonic Eneloop.

Genau das wollte ich auch antworten. Er hat vergessen die Laschen in die Platine zu setzen und danach umzubiegen.
Stimmt, habe ich komplett übersehen. Ich könnte mir allerdings vorstellen, dass die Laschen auch Probleme machen können, wenn z.B. die Platine nicht ganz gerade liegt (ist bei mir ein bisschen gekippt), der Bildschirm ist durch den Rahmen trotzdem gut zentriert.

Super Video, aber Display ist total enttäuschend. Hässlicher weißer Rahmen, doppelte Stromaufnahme!?
Der Rahmen würde in einem normalen, undurchsichtigen, weißen Gehäuse gar nicht auffallen. Und die doppelte Stromaufnahme kommt wahrscheinlich fast ausschließlich von der Hintergrundbeleuchtung. Mit modernen wiederaufladbaren Batterien eigentlich kein Problem, aber vielleicht wird der nächste Mod ja ein Lithium-Ionen-Akku mit Fast-Charge?^^
Danke, die Stromaufnahme fällt bisher tatsächlich kaum ins Gewicht. Ich benutze die Akkus, die ich gezeigt habe und spiele schon seit ein paar Tagen immer mal wieder, bisher ohne nachladen zu müssen. Die Rahmen gibt es auch in anderen Farben, je nach Lieferant. Kann ggf auch weggelassen werden, dann ist das Display allerdings natürlich viel schwerer zu zentrieren.
@@JanBeta Wenn es den Rahmen als stl irgendwo gibt, könnte man den auch mit durchsichtigem PLA drucken. Perfekt durchsichtig würde es wohl eher nicht, aber wahrscheinlich passt das dann besser zum restlichen Stil
