UPDATE: The LUMIX S1 also has Open Gate, in the form of (for larger-than-4K), there's "6K" 5952*3968 (3:2) 24p as well as a "5.4K" 5376*3584 (3:2) 30p modes! Both are 4:2:0. What do you think; are you intrigued to start shooting in Open Gate? With the GH6 firmware 2.0 released on July 5 2022, you can even do 4:3 5.8K RAW with the Ninja V+!
Well, sort of. I don't recall what I said in the video but here are the two cameras - the GH6 shoots 5760x4320 in what's called "5.8K" mode, which is an accurate name when looking at the source width (5760 = 5.8K). The GH5II shoots 4992x3744 in "6K-A" mode. I don't recall now if the "6K" is a diagonal measurement (probably, since the diagonal is 6240) or if it's a measurement of what it'll be once it's stretched (even a 1.33x anamorphic stretch will result in over 6,600 pixels wide), so that name is more a marketing term. Since the mode is no longer meant to be used only for anamorphic, the name changed to reflect a more realistic use (and what we're used to seeing… "4K" = 4096 wide, not diagonal) pulse.ly/usz7chbns3
This video is an excellent demonstration of a seriously underrated feature. Honestly Panasonic should be shouting this from the rooftops - especially since shooting dual aspect is such a big deal now. You could shoot an entire feature like a documentary and distribute it as dual aspect.
I don't agree I think the fact that it's only available at 30p makes it a real weak point... Make it 100p (no crop, but lower resolution) and you'll have a winner.
Your videos are always amazing, thanks so much for sharing with us. This video make me feel proud of getting the GH6, your videos always shows the full potential.
Now, I’m a stills shooter who doesn’t really use video… but I’m blown away by the frame guide options. I want that so much on every camera. Common and custom aspect ratios, with a brightline or black bar options. Fantastic.
Thank you Joseph for this really, really well executed tutorial, I believe you invested many hours in producing this video and it turned out awesome. And yes, I haven't taught about this option to film like that, we have few GH5 and I will try it out.
This feature was actually available (on accident) in the GH4 in one of the later firmware updates. people liked it so much they kept it in the GH5 and GH6
Just finished the video. That smart reframe is amazing. I still prefer horizontal video but between resolve and the open gate sensor that would take a lot of the pain points out of shooting for different aspect ratios. Do you ever find yourself having a tendency to shoot tighter than you need to just out of habit? You probably have better instincts for shooting/cropping with your photography background.
Hey buddy! Thanks for watching! The open gate and smart reframe certainly does make things easier. You still want to shoot with the final aspect ratios in mind for sure. As to your question; I do my final framing in camera. It’s really rare that I tighten up a shot in post, and even more rare that I wish I’d shot wider. But yeah, I’ve been looking through a lens for 40 years, so that probably has something to do with it!
Dude, this is the reason I bought TWO G9s. Their "6K mode" is open gate 4992x3744 (same as GH5). It's fixed at 30fps 4:2:0 10bit 150Mbps HEVC. You have to configure the "6K photo mode" to start-stop record to make it work as a video mode (don't have the dial turned to video mode or it will do regular 16:9). There is a 10minute limit to record time. You get audio as well. Not bad for a camera with a street value of less than $1K. The G9 seems to be the 13th floor of hybrid cameras - how did this not get a mention? Thats why i still call it the most underrated budget semi-pro camera there is even though it's getting a bit long in the tooth now. Not bad for a 2018 stills camera. The only thing I personally feel lacking is a higher bitrate and built in log which feels expensive to me as I have to buy it as an addon even though it's not the full thing. I wish Panasonic would just give it away. Maybe you could have a word to them since G9 is probably EoL soon.
You're not wrong - I chose to include just the dedicated Anamorphic modes that don't have any of the 6K Photo limitations, but you absolutely can get the most of it from that mode. Yeah the G9 is a great price point for doing this!
Well done video. I'm a still guy. I also avoid Instagram like the plague, but I get that it is what the customer wants. I was going to pass on this video, but I fell in. I appreciate seeing a whole new perspective on things, and yes, over my head, but I'll be back. Thanks for your efforts.
This is genius. Just last week I was struggling with a project that needed a 9x16 version as well and I found so much being cropped out. Gonna have to try shooting 4:3 on my GH5!
This is oddly satisfying to watch and I don’t own a LUMIX camera. Great feature, content and editing! Your camera and lens selection is amazing. Also, thank you for reminding me to register for re-certification as a Davinci Resolve Trainer - with the 18 release and all.
4 by 3 is what the old TV system was. Mobile phones can be rotated 90' resulting in a much nicer longer width and lower height frame. 16 by 9 corresponds to the Golden Ratio. 3 by 2 is a commonly used ratio.
New folding phones are all very close to 4:3 too and the ipads are also. right now there are tens of millions of new near 4:3 aspect ratio screens perfect for viewing 4:3 content
Same for the Panasonic LX100 I used to have. Had a dedicated switch on the lens to switch between aspect ratio's on the fly. This also supported 4:3 and worked great! The greatest feature is Aspect Bracketing where you can take a single picture and it takes 4 different pictures with all 4 aspect ratios in the camera (3:2, 16:9, 4:3, 1:1).
Well, thanks. I have s5 so i shoot at 3:2 6k photo mode that shoots at a resolution that is 5k x 3k ish. I adjust shutter speed to 100 or less to get a video blurr. But i render in the same aspect ratio as i am bored of 16x9 , plus the fact thst i have to loose so much area. It works for me.
Thank you for sharing your GH6 Open Gate workflow. It is incredibly informative. Your straight forward presentation is paced well and easy to follow. I plan to use open gate acquisition quite extensively because of the flexibility it allows me in making HD deliverables while maintaining a master that can be repurposed and future proofed to create up to a 5K deliverable to streaming services. Like you I also enjoy shooting with my set of Meike Cine style prime lenses and my set of Surui anamorphic primes. The flexibility the GH6 gives content creators of intellectual properties for meeting the demands of a worldwide dynamic changing marketplace is unmatched at it’s price point.
I use it in my gx85 to simulate Vista Vision and it's great. The timelapse mode on this camera shoots open gate but it's not label as anything anamorphic it just allows the use of the full sensor.
I have four cameras that are capable of shooting open gate 5.7K; however, I don’t use them to shoot 9:16. I shoot live theatre, concerts, and dance shows with multiple cameras. Only one of these cameras has a live operator. The open gate lets me reframe the shot in post or turn one shot into two by having a different crop.
Those of us that shoot anamorphic have been very keen on Panasonic’s open gate modes for quite some time, for obvious reasons! Full Frame Open Gate anamorphic on the S1H is insane.
@gothamindembaum you got it. You can compress vertically or you can expand horizontally, it really just depends on what you want to achieve. If you’re shooting LUMIX open gate then you’re starting with 6K so can go either way without losing anything; if you’re shooting 4K 16:9 then you’re definitely losing pixels by compressing horizontally. And yes the softer look can definitely be desirable, although there’s a difference between low resolution softness vs film softness. This is why the S1H is still so popular - it’s the only full frame LUMIX without a low pass filter on the sensor, which opens it up to moire but softens the overall image in a way that most filmmakers prefer.
If I’m not mistaken, doesn’t the G9 shoot open gate in 6k photo mode? You can choose 4:3 or 3:4, but it’s at 5.1k higher than the GH5. Am I missing something here? Great video BTW☺️
Certain apps allow you to shoot in open gate on the iPhone. Quality is amazing compared to the normal mode in low light though no stabilization(can't handhold it) and limited to 30fps
I think the iPhone, even when using filmic pro, can only shot at around 50 to 70 Mbps. I’ve seen the claims of 150 Mbps being reached but have never been able to get near that.
Suddenly got excited again over my old Panasonic LX100. A camera from 2014 with a 4/3 sensor that shoots 4K that would let you select sensor crops on the ring. 3:2, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:3. But can only force a reframed 16:9 video out of it. What you really need is a custom aspect ration grid you can apply to the reference monitor/viewfinder at all your aspect ratios. That's the killer feature to make best use of this crop. Been using it on full TV shoots for a few years and never looked back.
Let's all suggest this at FiLMiC Pro to be added in a future release. The iPhone sensor also has an aspect ratio of 4:3 so this would give us 4032 x 3024 pixels to work with. MAVIS App already has it.
Mama Mia. I like it. I’ll be starting a new job soon and will have to shoot this method see how it treats me. Love the fact you’re utilizing Davinci. Adobe realllly needs to feel the pressure.
Perhaps an additional update? The OG S5 (yes not the S5 II/IIX) has "open gate" video recording at 30P as well, but is hidden in the menu. Change camera mode to "M", change selected burst mode (I use II) to use 6K Photo, change mode to S/S (shutter start/stop). Limited to 15 minutes per recording, but you can select 3:2 (5183x3456) and 4:3 (4992x3744) aspect ratios and even set Photo Style to V-Log. Includes audio! My understanding is that is also 200Mbps bit rate recording. I've used it successfully for far better Anamorphic than the official "Anamorphic 4:3" mode on the OG S5. If you could, suggest that now the S5 II/IIX have received firmware upgrades that Panasonic move that 6K mode to the video menu on the OG S5 as a friendly gesture.
Open gate is one of the features that puts Panasonic ahead of all the other manufacturers. It's crazy cool that only Panasonic is giving consumers these video features.
I'm not against what u suggest, open gate is important, great video! But when u use 1.33x anamorphic adapter and put it vertical on 16:9, it's 4:3, put it horizontal on 16:9, it's 2.4:1, especially when it's on full frame 16:9, the high sensitivity in low light and the background blur will be much better than it's on M43 sensor... Since I started to use full frame sensor, I feel like I can never go back, I really like the design of GH series, but every time I think about I will lose 75% high sensitivity and blur on m43 sensor, I just give it up... So this Open Gate Thing actually can't help GH series or S35 sensor that much, I'm now using 1.33x adapter on full frame 16:9 to make vlog and put it on my Instagram, it looks bigger than 16:9 on Instagram and feels like Alexa LF, that vibe and character just blow my mind
Oh and I used to like Vazen 28mm anamorphic lens because it's 1.8x, then I found that the image circle of Vazen 28mm is actually a standard S35, which means the best fit for it is S5 series because S5 series have a S35 4:3 mode, it can get the edge character of Vazen 28mm to make the anamorphic character stronger, but GH series can't get there, just the middle M43 part which is clean weak and boring... SONY also has sensor crop mode to read the sensor with 1.52x crop, bigger than S5 4:3 mode because it's 16:9, the left and right are black circle but at least it can get the whole image circle and character of Vazen 28mm... so M43 sensor is actually kinda meaningless in this era
So this is what GoPro has done since the beginning- actually they have more modes where they use the rest of the sensor creatively- a shame that other companies don‘t use more of these options
Joseph, you looks as mind person, could you clarify me, why panasonic packed extended v-gamut colorspace (v-log) into rec709 colorspace? You can check it in metadata. After that operation, v-log become typical profile as Standart/Natural etc with very specific curve, but rec709 has theoretical 9.97 stops of lights, that mean no matter what you choose: v-log, cined2/Standart (with contrast/saturation -5), you will get this 10 stops maximum. P.S. even sony/canon can choose rec709/bt2020 colorspace for their log profiles.
hey there… I think there’s some confusion here, and I’m not totally sure I understand everything you’re saying, but it’s like this - first of all, Rec709 vs Rec2020 or Rec2100 are just flags. It’s metadata, and means nothing to the actual file. You can flip that flag in the NLE, and since most people are still grading in SDR, that’s probably why the default is Rec709. But depending on your NLE, this is likely going to be flipped automatically as you start working in SDR or HDR color space. I’ve done HDR grading in FCP, Resolve and Premiere, and each handled the files differently but ultimately for the same results. The file itself is 10-bit, and has all the dynamic range. There’s no 10-stop clamping because the source file has a Rec709 tag on it. If other cameras let you switch the flag internally, that’s nice, but ultimately useless. If you want a Rec2100 flag out of the camera, shoot in HLG and you’ll get it. And finally to make the point of why standards are important, the blackmagic HyperDecks at one point inadvertently set the flag of all recordings to Rec2020 which really screwed up SDR workflows, because the NLE didn’t know what to do with the Rec2020 flag in an SDR space. They fixed that almost immediately, but it shows the importance of standardizing on a Rec709 flag for Log footage.
Awesome stuff here, Joseph! It makes me sad knowing that Sony will most likely never update their cameras to include Open Gate. If they ever provide the option, they will most likely introduce it in newer models and will forget about their older ones.
You can shoot 4:3 and publish it like that, but remember that most screens favor the 16x9 aspect ratio, so you'll just get more black bar spaces on the left and right. Maybe people just like the IMAX looking frame, but it doesn't matter if you're not showing it on a 4:3 screen like an IMAX.
anyway you need to compose your shoot in the in the middle of the frame, i think if you think in compose in a classic 16:9 way even using open gate nos sure you will get nice results por 9:16 then
Not at all. Compose in 4:3 with room around your subject and place the subject wherever it makes sense for the shot, then crop accordingly for side or tall. Balanced negative space is everything.
Hi Joseph, why did you leave out the Open gate specs of the GH5s and at specs that not even the GH6 can meet? The GH5s does 3328x2496, at 29.97 but here comes the important part... at 4:2:2, 10-bit (12-bit ProRes RAW on the way more affordable Ninja V if that is your thing), and 400Mbps (vs 4:2:0 and 200Mbps of the GH6)... and it can do this direct to a V90 SD card. I shot near everything on my GH5s at 4:3 so it is very important to me. So short of spending money on the GH6 and a Ninja V+ (crazy money in Canada for the level of improvement), I don't see my use case as being able to justify the GH6 at all... and I really wanted to! Superb video as always, love your channel! :)
Could one distribute a project shot in open gate to a film festival, or is it best to use Cinema 4K 4 2 2 10bit? I love the editing options. Having different crops might add to the storytelling.
I’m using a rather small smallhd focus field monitor and the 4:3 crop makes it harder to check focus, especially at longer focal lengths. Most of our edits remain in 16:9, the extra room for vertical edits is a nice to have but for I’d prefer it like shooting log whilst previewing with a correction lut; the most available data recorded to work with whilst previewing something looking a bit closer to the end result.
I wish open gate wasn't limited to 200mbits in 5.7k for recording internally but supporting RAW recording in open gate too without having to buy an external recorder
Hey! I hope that MKE 600 is working out for you. : ) A lot of what's going on with the GH6 makes me want to go back to M43. I have the S5 and it's lovely, and I can use my vintage lenses with it, but that GH6 looks so nice and I miss the better viewfinder I had with the GH5. ~Ryan
Will the Ninja V+ work with Canon R5 using this 4:3 and later punch in to use 16x9 or 9x16?
🤦♂
@PhotoJoseph So is the same on the S5? I it seen it has 4:3 anamorphic mode with a apsc crop.
Great video, as always! One correction: GH5 II shot anamorphic 6k, not 5k.

@@photojoseph heard loud and clear. Thank you
Glad you made this video dude, this is such an underrated feature! My GH6 is my go to camera when I know I need deliverables for social posts too.
Thanks man. It is a killer feature for sure!
True, I hope that this becomes a standard feature in all cameras
You're the man! I was so confused with the cropping of open gate footage. Thank you

Version 2.7 on GH4. Bottom of page 6/7 on the camera settings.
The gh4 was so far ahead of the game people are STILL surprised by how many amazing features it has.
Wow!!! I’m so blown away!
This was so worth the wait, the intro was amazing and I absolutely need to watch this again!
Wow thank you, I really appreciate that!!
how are you not famous yet? this channel is stunning
Aw man I really appreciate that. Thank you.
That's just clean! Got the gh6 in April (super dope camera). Never considered the reason to shoot open gate. This is a game changer brother!
Awesome, thanks! Yeah it’s definitely a cool feature
The GH5, the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for the download!
So glad I meet you at CineGear, and learned about this!! 🙌🏾
Awesome man, great meeting you too - thanks for stopping by!!

Just finished the video. That smart reframe is amazing. I still prefer horizontal video but between resolve and the open gate sensor that would take a lot of the pain points out of shooting for different aspect ratios.
Love this feature on my S5II. The 6K video coming off the full sensor looks incredible.
Yeah! Agreed!
Incredible intro Joseph! By far the most convincing argument for open gate I’ve seen for the GH6.
I hope you’re well! Loved this video.
Hey Chadwick, thank you for watching and for the complement! This was really fun to put together, for sure.

Oh wow, that makes perfect sense. Cool!
I think the iPhone, even when using filmic pro, can only shot at around 50 to 70 Mbps. I’ve seen the claims of 150 Mbps being reached but have never been able to get near that.
That probably depends on the phone. I only have the 12, but the 13 can do ProRes so maybe on that one you get the higher bitrate?
Suddenly got excited again over my old Panasonic LX100. A camera from 2014 with a 4/3 sensor that shoots 4K that would let you select sensor crops on the ring. 3:2, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:3. But can only force a reframed 16:9 video out of it.
What you really need is a custom aspect ration grid you can apply to the reference monitor/viewfinder at all your aspect ratios. That's the killer feature to make best use of this crop. Been using it on full TV shoots for a few years and never looked back.
love this video master joseph. it shows your skills. 👌🏼
Thank you kindly
great detailed review.. BEST!
Thanks!!
Haha awesome. I hope it works for you!
Good explanation. Thanks. I hadn’t thought about it that way but makes perfect sense.
Right on! Opening gates, opening eyes 😂
Amazing video and great job! 👏
Thank you!
16:50 That's so so cool!
☺️
This is the guy John wick would go to if he was a photographer.
Haha I love it
Extremely helpful video. Just added a LUMIX S5ii to our Sony bodies. Can you do something showing workflow with both 3:2 and 16:9 files?
The Panasonic S1 also supports open gate shooting in both 6k and anamorphic modes.
You're right… I missed those! For larger-than-4K, there's "6K" 5952*3968 (3:2) 24p as well as a "5.4K" 5376*3584 (3:2) 30p modes! Both are 4:2:0
you are always a good tutor
😊 thank you
This is a such epic feature! I should tell my grandma immdiately, and she doesnt bother to rotate her camera anymore😊
A GREAT VIDEO, JOSEPH!!! THANKS FOR EXPLAIN HOW OPEN GATE RUN... BEST REGARDS FROM SPAIN. NANO.
Glad it was helpful!
You could also just shoot a bit wider on every other cam, and then choose your frame
This was awesome and I learned something new...Thank you Joseph.
That’s what I love to hear!
Wish this was possible on the Lumix S series cameras! I’d love to shoot open gate on my S5.
Edit: it’s possible with APS-C mode but not in full-frame
Great point! I like it
☺️
Could you possibly do a quick video of Proxy Files. Could you show the workflow from beginning to end, I'm new to that aspect, thank you, great stuff.
I actually am planning a workflow video on this, centered around the Blackmagic Cloud Store Mini, but that won’t be until September at the earliest.
Just put an overlay on your monitor to frame a bit wider
I hope they can update at least 48p for the full sensor open gate.I think they can do it. It is just if Panasonic want to or not.
GoPro does something similar too. Super useful.
Oh yeah, I forgot that!
Dang they’re making the S5 look like a paper weight. @Panasonic can we get some updates?
Open gate is one of the features that puts Panasonic ahead of all the other manufacturers. It's crazy cool that only Panasonic is giving consumers these video features.
☺️
Wow thats so cool!
Just a shame it’s not available in higher Frame rate, even if only 50fps
iPhone will probably adopt this feature in the future, makes more sense since direct upload to tiktok aspect ratio
So this is what GoPro has done since the beginning- actually they have more modes where they use the rest of the sensor creatively- a shame that other companies don‘t use more of these options
It is a lot harder on bigger sensors, which is why you see it on small sensors more readily.
Open Gate is such a weird term. It's literally 4:3 and I was choosing that anyway for that purpose before I even knew what Open Gate was...
It’s an old industry name referring to film days.
Thanks a lot for these super useful info!
🙏🏻
The iPhone has an secret open gate mode and it is my favourite way to shoot on it so good for shooting landscape and still posting to vertical social
I’ve heard about this… what’s the secret? Another app?
Yeah I film in open gate too
Very useful! Thank you.
Subbed.
UMMMM.....YOU HAVE GAINED A SUBSCRIBER. lol great vid
Awesome, and welcome!
You really didn’t watch this video, did you.
anyway you need to compose your shoot in the in the middle of the frame, i think if you think in compose in a classic 16:9 way even using open gate nos sure you will get nice results por 9:16 then
Thanks Jerry. Deliberately excluded because the open gate isn’t > than 3840 wide, so a 4K delivery would require scaling up.
True! Thank-you. :)
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Very helpful! Thank you
It's really strange I haven't heard about this more. It's a actually a huge thing.
it is! But not many cameras support it. One of the LUMIX advantages ☺️
Could one distribute a project shot in open gate to a film festival, or is it best to use Cinema 4K 4 2 2 10bit? I love the editing options. Having different crops might add to the storytelling.
I absolutely love shooting open gate on my gh6, I just really wish Panasonic adds the option to output 16:9 over hdmi whilst recording open gate.
That’s interesting. What’s the use case?
(And actually; have you tried? Since you can set the hdmi output to 1080 or 3840 or auto, what happens?)
Excellent video. Is this available on the G9?
I wish open gate wasn't limited to 200mbits in 5.7k for recording internally but supporting RAW recording in open gate too without having to buy an external recorder
There’s patent law blocking cameras from recording raw internally.
still prefer to shoot in a vertical shoot on my gimbal for instagram videos so that I get the most resolution and not a crop version.
~Ryan
