    One thing to keep in mind when creating vertical content from a 16:9 ratio, is that you'll get less blur in the background, because you need to increase the distance to the subject. On the other hand, turning the camera 90 degrees lets you get closer even when using open gate, which increases the blur (if this is something you like/need). Other than that, I wish I had open gate on my camera too! Nice video btw.

    Thank you for this explanation it really helped me understand much more as I am primarily a musician and sound engineer/ producer of music, over the last couple of years I’ve learnt a lot by teaching myself video production and editing , so I can create music videos to accompany the tracks we have recorded. I’ve learnt a lot of really useful and great techniques but there’s always so much more you can learn and miss when try to teach yourself and more often than not you end up going down your own road and having tunnel vision, it’s the same when recording and producing music by yourself, when the other band members are present I always find it’s much more creative as having other peoples ideas and techniques always gives the tracks addition feel, flavour, character and dynamics that may not of thought of.
    The video aspect of which ratio I should ideally film in has caught me out a number of times and when editing and post production I’ve lost parts of the frame I expected or wanted to be there. So cheers this explanation has made me think about this and understand what I should be doing when actually recording video. Big thanks Steve

    I think open gate for filmmaking is the best use of that feature. Taking an open gate shot and cropping to a vertical video, which most people view on their smartphones, seems like overkill since they really wouldn't notice the difference in quality on such a small screen.

    • @Ulrich.Bierwisch
      @Ulrich.Bierwisch 10 місяців тому +2

      It's not just the quality. If you switch to vertical and you have more height, you also get more width to play with. If you film a person you can position the frame in a way that the head is more or less in top of the frame, cut a lot at the bottom for 16:9 and vertically you get the full person right in frame.
      I use open gate sometimes when filming in streets and I want to avoid converging lines on interesting buildings. I can keep the camera horizontal and cut a lot away from the bottom of the image. The effect is the same as using a shift lens. I use M43 so I have even more room to shift.

    • @AllThingsFilm1
      @AllThingsFilm1 10 місяців тому

      @@Ulrich.Bierwisch Oh yea, I am in full agreement with the reframing choices open gate gives you. It’s the use in vertical videos that I think it becomes overkill.

  • @mike_s_media
    @mike_s_media 10 місяців тому +1

    It really depends... it just gives you a little bit more flexibility in the aspect ratio but it's nothing that can't be achieved with proper framing. I know I definitely wouldn't use it to track motion like someone walking across a scene because you are going to lose parallax and add some weird motion artifacts. Open gate or not you aren't losing any image quality by changing your aspect ratio. It's when you decide to crop in on your aspect ratio that you will lose resolution in both open gate or standard 16:9. Adjusting your aspect ratio would simply be taking a 9:16 clip out of your 16:9 shot or 3:2 open gate shot from top to bottom. The result would be an image that looks a bit more zoomed out from the open gate sensor which can be equalled by proper framing in the 16:9 sensor, and likewise you can crop in on the open gate sensor to match the 9:16 of the 16:9 sensor and again the image quality would be identical and if you cropped in from there on both 10x you would still lose the same image quality on both (presuming same sensor resolution etc). Not to mention you lose the potential for higher frame rates ie slow motion when shooting open gate... unless you're Arri of course... even still 90fps isn't a lot. The "professional" reasoning behind shooting open gate is to match aspect ratios in post and alleviate the need to do multiple takes framed in different aspect ratios. It's a very cinema camera feature designed around saving money on set and in post. All in all the benefits are really not that ground breaking and don't offer any major advantage over a standard sensor. There's a far more dramatic effect between an APS-C image at 35mm focal length and a Full Frame 35mm focal length than shooting from 16:9 to 3:2 open gate!

    All the reframe stuff @ 6K "Open Gate" same as I do with 8K on the R5C when you have enough pixels and the right lens open gate doesnt matter :) you can reframe all day long.
    Camera probably wont handle the full sensor at full resolution, so it could do a 6K oversample similar to this if they wanted, but it would just be an alternative to filming in 8K as the camera already super samples from the larger part of the sensor when recording in 4K.
    To be fair, editing 6K footage will be faster/easier for most people. 8K editing is demanding.

    Open gate is especially useful for cropping to 4:3 because then you can use the full height of the sensor compared to cropping the 16:9 video to 4:3 where there is a decent amount data lost at the top and bottom of the sensor.

    The OG S5 (yes not the S5 II/IIX) has "open gate" video recording at 30P as well, but is hidden in the menu. Change camera mode to "M", change selected burst mode (I use II) to use 6K Photo, change mode to S/S (shutter start/stop). Limited to 15 minutes per recording, but you can select 3:2 (5183x3456) and 4:3 (4992x3744) aspect ratios and even set Photo Style to V-Log. Includes audio! My understanding is that is also 200Mbps bit rate recording. I've used it successfully for far better Anamorphic than the official "Anamorphic 4:3" mode on the OG S5. Hey Panasonic, why not move it to the video menu in a future firmware for the OG S5 as a friendly gesture for the older camera owners? Anyway, any older OG S5 owners, enjoy "open gate!"

    This is why I think people are sleeping on the Panasonic s1 - it's a fraction of the price second hand - but it's got the same specs as the s5iix except it's a bit heavier, it's not got a fully articulating screen or autofocus. In some cases it's £1500 cheaper to buy an S1.
    I know it's more specific than that including the new bit rates available on the S5iix but you could buy an external recorder monitor with the money you save getting an s1 and record Blackmagic RAW

      Feels like you’re just stating camera features that come with a more premium price tag and camera. Of course better in camera features especially the difference from FF to APSC make a difference in the footage captured.
      But that’s missing the point since open gate is huge for image capture there probably won’t be a more practical way to capture images in the coming future unless we change the way we view videos. Your talking about camera features that differ in quality with price and company this is about a much better format to capture footage that is just software that can be added to any modern camera.
      Open gate allows people huge amounts of flexibility in the data they capture especially in a professional environment hopefully Sony adopts the technology as soon as possible there’s honestly no disadvantage.

    they anamorphic lenses DO NOT squeeze the image - they stretch it across the vertical plane of the sensor - you then squeeze it back in post. your horizontal resolution does not change - but the vertical does - because of that. not trolling - just a very common misconception- might be worth pinning for.

    • @PANAFRAZER
      @PANAFRAZER 10 місяців тому

      I am sorry but this is not correct, the modern anamorphic lens is a vertical cylinder so the only plane of compression is horizontal.

    • @PhotoVideoTechOz

      You obviously have never used an anamorphic in your life, or edited anamorphic footage. An anamorphic contains flat vertical cylinder that cause a wider image to project on a narrow sensor, in edit a horizontal stretch is applied to widen the viewing aspect. Go check out Anamorphic on a budget course on how anamorphic works before telling another channel to pin your comment.

      @dunnadidit  10 місяців тому +1

      Kind of! I tried my best to mention the open gate part and the resolution part as kind of two separate but intersecting things, but they do get kind of mingled. You can definitely pull a 4k vertical from a 6k 16:9 video if you have the ability to shoot that, but unless you’re explicitly shooting a bit wide on purpose, you’re not quite getting as much vertical framing as you would with 3:2. That’s really the advantage… with the more “boxy” 3:2 ratio, I barely even have to think about framing for both, it kind of just works most of the time. Where, when you film 16:9, you need to be more intentional to pull nice looking vertical compositions.

    Open gate is usually not 3/2. It’s usually 1.43:1 at least on the Alexa LF

    Great video, do you have a video about how to edit Open Gate into the various formats. I have just got the G9 II and shooting open gate but having a hard time knowing how to edit it on a 4K timeline. Any tips would be great.

    I’ve used this a few times on my GH6 and like it. Only two things that make me not shoot it all the time, the first being it only allows me to shoot in 5.9k which can be a pain to edit on my computer being in h.265 (you can do pro res but it’s 1100mbps!) and the other is on my 5 inch atomos monitor it doesn’t fill the whole screen as it’s a 16:9 display so makes it harder to get focus.

    Dont forget to PLAN the shot, and frame accordingly.... No Reason to reframe! To have flexibillity just makes You lazy and you try to be creative in post..... No serious filmmaker needs this... Just for quick an dirty, OR UA-cam/Insta.... Good creators shoot it so often they need it for the output they intend .... Just to save time, and money doesnt mean that you create more creating.... Fake camera movement is FDAKE.... Just Plan with a shot list and work.... Those reframed shorts made out of the original is spotted fast, and gives me the impression that the creator made short cuts and doesnt give the short the same seriousness and status... I feel cheated.... if I spot it, I normally dont look at the long version.... But I know that UA-cam is not film, and everything has its purpose.... but it is boring..... EVerybody makes mistakes....Just refilm it

    When you film 6k on Panasonic s5ii open gate 3:2 do you lose the 6k if in post if you choose to use 16:9 per se and end up in 4K ? If you go to instagram vertical 4 by 5 do you end up in 1080p ?

    I wish open-gate was more of a thing from the very beginning. Begging for it from manufacturers now feels so impossible. The thing is, if they're going to offer things like RAW or LOG... then why not open-gate, clearly those who WANT to edit/color/frame, need that kind of flexibility, hell they can bury it 10 levels deep in a menu for all I care, it wouldn't be there for the casual user.

    hope to find an answer here, when placing 5.7k footage (5720x4320 pixels?) on to a 4k 16:9 timeline (3840 x 2160) the footage is a bit smaller the the timeline and i have to zoom in to make it fit. but it should be a lot bigger then the timeline is. anybody know what i am doin wrong? thnx

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  Місяць тому

      It might be because the ratio is different than 16:9. Is it filling the entire height but not the width of the frame? In Davinci resolve, there are scaling options that allow you to fit, fill, or crop footage that is a different size from the timeline resolution.

    Great video, some important things were left out. The first is Open Gate is only available on SSD recording. Next, 1.9GB/second file size. Those are major considerations because a content creator has to have a computer capable of editing huge file sizes.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 місяців тому +1

      I disagree, I did ALL of the open gate recording on an SD card in the camera so I can confidently say you do not need to use an SSD.

    I get it all, but it's still not that big of a deal IMO. It'll be great when it's ubiquitous, but I'm good to wait. I'd honestly rather have Global Shutter before Open Gate.
