Just a note on the reverberate "combo", this commander grants casualty to the First! Spell each turn. So you'd have to do it on a oppenets spell not just one you would cast on your own turn.
The wording is "The first instant or sorcery spell YOU cast each turn has casualty 2." meaning that the first spell cast each turn does not matter unless it is a spell the controller of Anhelo casts.
@@whaydryen6410 I said that as a caution of the combo. You can't go off on your own turn with reverberate because the reverberate wouldn't get the Angelo bonus, the spell before it would.
@@OpticF3ARNGT But you can use the reverberate combo on your turn so long as reverberate is the first instant or sorcery you cast that turn. I'm not seeing the issue.
Copy spells like reverberate in order to win via rai storm conduit in this deck, you're going to need your opponents to cast a instant or sorcery because as soon as you cast a instant or sorcery for that turn that takes up the casualty spot and therefore you won't be able to casualty a copy spell unless your casting it targeting an opponent instant or sorcery providing you haven't cast a instant or sorcery that tuen
I'm so glad you mentioned extra turn spells, I was thinking of building Anhelo around 2/x creature token making instants and sorceries, adding some extra turn spells will definitely help close out a game!!
This is kinda like Kalamax, except you get to copy sorceries as well. Do think this is harder to activate, but being able to copy sorceries as well is a huge upside for sure, very cool!
Loving the pun in the flavor text Mechanically? Sure. Copying spells is always fun, and if you get a creature out first you do it for free! You really want to be playing both a creature and an instant or sorcery each turn, so token generator spells and finding a balance are essential.
It's strong, but not too crazy. We've got plenty of stronger things in the format for sure. The difficult part will be in balancing your ratios of creatures to instants and sorceries.
@@MatthewCJoy You still gotta draw those cards, and a number of those cost a fair bit of mana before you get the engine online. You gotta run some 1-2 mana dudes too to put up some defense. Also, the dudes that create bodies after spells are cast can be awkward. Since costs are paid first, you might end up sacrificing the token maker to the casualty cost if you need the value. Since it's gone, it doesn't see the cast trigger and won't replace itself. And it's not as if you can choose a later sorcery or instant in that turn, since only gives the first one the casualty trigger. So there's still some thought you gotta put into it.
@@equos5060 Tokens aren't as good as actual creatures though. I'd rather have a creature that maybe replaces itself as well as being fuel for my sorceries and instants than some vanilla tokens. Not that you only run creatures. Not only that, but it still creates the same problem. Those token generators are still "creatures" for the sake of ratios. You can clog on one part of the mix if ratios are bad.
Anhelo, with a conjourer's closet in play and an archaeomancer in hand... play an extra turn spell, sack a 2 power creature for 2 extra turns, then 1st extra turn cast archaeomancer and repeat? what is the black extra turn spell called? the one where your opponent can pay HALF their life total to counter? drop that every turn and its gonna get busted.
Favorite thing with this card is Narset’s Reversal. Keep my Narset’s reversal and be able to use it once on each turn until i have to use it twice or after my first instant or sorcery on my turn
I haven’t played magic in probably 20 years. My wife used to as well and this weekend we bought some commander decks to get back into it. Had no idea what we’d find looking at the store’s small selection. I picked this guy’s and hers is a different cool one too. We’ll probably make 60 card decks with ours and play traditionally, then try with all/commander but idk, I’m excited to get into it again. ✌️
Since Sacrificing and Spellslinging are two of my favorite archetypes I am super excited to build and play around with this guy. Extra turns seems a little too cheeky for me, might try some kind of storm strategy maybe?
Just need a creature with Casualty 1 Casualty 2 Casualty 3 Casualty 4 Casualty 5 Where you deal damage to X amount of targets where X is the amount of creatures sacrificed dealing Y amount of damage (being the total power of the creatures sacrificed)
Ascendent Evincar or similar + Ophimancer makes a 2/2 token each upkeep so you can instant and copy in each persons turn, Jadar gives you a 2/2 decayed zombie per turn if you are going turns. If you are looking for casual value adventures is great cause you can still cast the creature from exile and sac it to casualty the next turn, maybe with kess to just keep pumping from the yard.
If you have a poppet stitcher on the board when you cast an instant or sorcery you can make a 2/2 decayed zombie token and then sac it to casualty effectively copying the spell for free.
I just got the precon deck today. I was just planning on making a pure Maestro deck, for casual play. But just seeing the extra turn spells makes me realize that this commander is truly NUTS! Now, the actual deck itself seems very tricky, and I’ve heard some people criticizing it as the weakest of the five. I don’t think I can agree with those sentiments. EDIT: Now that I have an idea of Anhelo’s potential, I’m honestly tempted to become a Total @$$hole and make a mean control deck. What do you think? Casual Maestros, or Total @$$hole? I’ll let you all vote on it.
I thought osbcura would be the control deck, but turns out maestros with this commander have a higher possibility of being a control deck. I like unblockable creatures, but i like even more casting double spells
This with any of the Prismari tokens like in Mascot Exhibition or similar cards. Dollhouse decks, or any just playable dude with an etb/death trigger for value.
Honestly want to make a unique twist for a mill deck with this as the commander. Got the idea with that infinite Reverberate combo and my favourite card for mill strategies, Consuming Aberration. Consuming Aberration has the effect that whenever you cast a spell, target player reveals the top card of their library until they reveal a land, then puts the revealed cards into their graveyard. Every spell mills through to a land. So just being able to copy the first instant or sorcery you cast each turn would thus mean even more effect at the cost of a creature. And with Reverberate, that infinite loop becomes infinite mill. As for the deck as a whole, however, Consuming Aberration already pairs well with Phenax, God Of Deception. Phenax gives all creatures the ability "T; Target player sends the top X cards of their library to their graveyard, where X is this creature's toughness." Paired with Consuming Aberration also having "this creature's power and toughness are each equal to the number of cards in all player's libraries", its amazing synergy. So with Phenax (he's my current commander for my mill deck but that will have to change for this), you have a good reason to have powerful creatures, or many creatures, despite having a mill strategy. That itself goes well with this new commander, for a sort of mill/swarm deck. Get lots of smaller creatures, but big enough for the Casualty cost, double up my mill instants and sorceries, tap my creatures to mill with Phenax, and mill a ton with Consuming Aberration. I can already think of a few other cards that would go well with this strategy. Alternatively, I could have Marchesa in as well (or have her as the commander and this in the deck), with Phenax synergizing well enough with +1/+1 pump effects, since that means creatures have more toughness to mill with. It also provides more ways to protect Consuming Aberration should I face someone that likes to exile stuff from their graveyard (smaller graveyard, weaker CA, empty graveyard, no CA, but counters fix that). And adding red to my current Dimir only deck would open options I couldn't consider before, mostly to synergize with Phenax or give more instants and sorceries to trigger CA and this commander. Not sure how well it would work, but in the least it would be an unusual sort of mill strategy, swarming and pumping effects to always have stuff for Casualty
Posting this in 2023 because I accidentally had all the cards I needed to build a deck with this commander. Pulled Anhelo from a booster and forgot about him. Bought the Innistrad Crimson Bride vampire precon last Christmas to cannibalize for select cards and also forgot about. Previously bought an Orvar the All-form, some blue generic tribal support cards, and a bunch of really solid Grixis removal, but had nowhere else to put them. The rest pretty much built itself. The Casualty on Anhelo is good coincidentally, though not essential for the deck to function. Vampires have lots of death triggers which Casualty enables, and the 2 power minumum for his casualty is a joke with all the tribal anthems and +1/+1 counters that came in the precon. Critical Mistake and Olivia's Wrath are fantastic tribal boardwipes to copy with Anhelo to allow them to take out bigger enemy creatures, and the precon even comes with two vampire tribal cards that give vampires you control first strike, allowing Anhelo can do a solid Glissa, the Traitor impression in combat because of his deathtouch.
Honestly I think anthems would be a cool way to go, a couple anthems and making 1/1s with the spells you wanna copy, only problem is you’re not in white lol
is there a card to untap all you're lands each turn? that would be my issue, using the land on my turn and not having and left during opponents turns. or would you just not tap and manner on you're turn lol

If a player gets multiple extra turns or if multiple players get extra turns during a single turn, the extra turns are added one at a time. The most recently created turn will be taken first."
or you could copy something like destroy target creature and return a creature to your side... that would be a 1 for 1 trade right? liek if you were playing against a green deck turn a shite storm of 2/2 zombies into big beefy green monstrosities mayhaps?
Cool effect with a big payoff, but I don't think this is broken considering you need to have all the pieces in place for the payoff cards. Even if you get it down early, it sticks, and you get additional creatures down, I feel like there's a lot that could mess with this strategy. Seems like a house of cards.
Something really gross you can do is use cards like Act of Treason to temporarily steal an opponent's creature and then you can sacrifice it for the next spell you cast.
I say bring that card that one card don’t build a deck walk around different tables show the card say you win and leave after an hour saying you’re undefeated to know you’ve never lost a game that’s a good idea

Something really gross you can do is use cards like Act of Treason to temporarily steal an opponent's creature and then you can sacrifice it for the next spell you cast.
Nope, because Act would end up being the one with Casualty, since it'd be the first spell
@@ellieofthebeast7952 Damn, my bad. Missed the first part.
Jin-Gitaxis vibes here are strong.
I see this and the red player in me goes ooooo burn commander
I say bring that card that one card don’t build a deck walk around different tables show the card say you win and leave after an hour saying you’re undefeated to know you’ve never lost a game that’s a good idea
