This Is What Happens in Your Brain During a Hot Flash

  • Hot flashes hit your body with an immediate sense of warmth. They can range from mild to severe, last anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, and can pop on rare occasions or recur repeatedly for years. This unexpected warm feeling stems from lower levels of estrogen, which fire off neurons in the hypothalamus that control temperature regulation.

I remember when I began having hot flashes! They lasted YEARS but were intensified by my taking Losartan for high blood pressure. They lessened when they changed my RX but I still had them. They were so uncomfortable that I FEARED them! I could immediately tell when one was going to start! I would feel a shot of adrenaline or fear. It was almost like the feeling you get when you had forgotten to do something very important or when something really scares you and you are ultra-aware. Once that feeling came on I KNEW what was to follow! I'd feel a prickly feeling in my neck, chest and head and then it would shoot through the rest of my body where I'd begin sweating. I began to DREAD them so much that just me thinking about them would inadvertently trigger them! It was THE MOST uncomfortable time of my life and I feel sorry for every woman going through it! At the time I was having them, I never really knew whether I was having hot flashes or anxiety attacks because they seemed similar. But because I never had anxiety attacks before menopause and I don't have them after menopause, I now know for sure they were hot flashes! Thank God they are gone! Now though I just suffer from being hot all the time as long as I'm moving and hot all night while I try to sleep! We women really have to go through crap that men could never understand! Ugh!

So does caffeine & sugar. My Dr warned me. Magnesium can help a little with alleviating. Ginseng has helped increase my estrogen levels. Thank you for this video. I started getting them in my early 30's. I'll be 60 in a couple of days. When I was still having my extremely heavy periods hot flashes were not present, so I was just dealing with unbelievable amounts of blood loss. So I kinda looked forward to that even though it could last 10-14 days. At one point I can remember sitting at the kitchen table and my hubby walked down the hall and I was seeing double. He took me to the hospital where I was given iron and then followed up with a prescription of iron. I get them 24 hours a day 7 days a week and last up to 6 minutes. Yeah, I timed it a few times to help me get through them, lol. Knowing it will end. The pain is what also gets me!!! sooooo painful!!! And then how cold I feel afterwards. Now that I think about it.... cause I don't want to think about, lol. I remember a client talking about soya milk and within two days they went away!!! omg... how did I forget that, lol!!! I use to drink it in tea or a small glass before bed.... haha... can't believe I forgot! Going out today to buy it again! I'll keep you updated.

Mine really bother me at night time especially when I’m laying down. Trying to fall asleep. That is the worst. So the blanket comes off the blanket goes back on. Back-and-forth it’s like a vicious cycle. So yes I am going through menopause. I am 53 years old soon to be 54. Usually they are not so bad during the day. It’s fine. I really get some more at night time. Next time I see my doctor. I’m going to ask her if there’s anything I can take to help reduce them. Because there’s nothing worse than looking at the clock and seeing it’s three or four or even 5 AM. And I still can’t get to sleep. Some nights are not so bad. And other nights it’s horrible. The only good thing about it is I have not had my period in over six months. 😂

I’m a guy and I have been experiencing hot flushes everytime I’m in bed. Because I’ve been sweating like crazy in bed and I don’t know how to combat this. It’s weird saying this by the way.

Usually hot flashes in men are the result of testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism) and should be checked out by a doctor
