I was in grade school when this gothic soap opera was in vogue. Every kid in my school raced home to watch it. We were in near hysteria as fans of the show. We couldn’t stop talking about it every day. Barnabas Collins was my generation’s Harry Potter.
I came into it in 1967; I didn't know that "regular soap opera" period was ever in there. All the acting was very very good; obviously these people had strong stage backgrounds. It's like a stage production. I have been waiting for it to get going didn't understand until I did some research that this didn't happen until episode 206 - longer than the entire series run of Seinfeld or, to put it another way, 9-1/2 months after the first episode aired. I didn't love the "slow period" writing, everyone kept talking about how something was about to happen, and waiting for it in trepidation...and waiting...and waiting...and waiting...
@@ballasog "I didn't know that "regular soap opera" period was ever in there" That's because you were correct the first time: it never was a "regular soap opera." It takes four episodes for the show to hint the house is haunted, and it gradually progresses from there. By the halfway point, the show already introduces it's first mythological monster with magic powers, and goes heavy into the supernatural. AND THEN you get a vampire.
Really? Because it's a massive disservice to the show, especially the fabulous and important Phoenix story: the show's first monster with magic powers and a pivotal moment for many of the character's story arcs.
@ElectroTherapyFTSoul I have all these, but paused that when I read the wikis and things and learned what was going on. I am on track to get to the end in a year or less. I watched like the initial 14. You're making a good point, but the people that love the show the most probably came to it as kids during its original run. I'm one of those, and am aware we all have a finite time to walk the earth (in the daytime anyway). I have to get through the series before worrying about the pre-Frid episodes. I never saw the show in color, because it was gone before we got a color set. You make me more determined to loop back around, but I'm going to go to the end first.
“Nobody’s going to watch this in one sitting” say that to my chemistry homework (I got a 91%, solid A-. Took me 4 hours, half of which was spent listening to this banger).
I fantasize that the final scene in the final episode when all story lines have been resolved Dr Hoffman and Elizabeth Stoddard are alone in the drawing room. Elizabeth hands Julia an envelope. “What’s this?” says Julia. Liz replies “It’s a bill for five years of room and board.” Fade out.
Dark Shadows & Passions are the best soap operas of all time, argue with the wall. Love the video David, thank you from the bottom of my goth nerdy heart for all your hard work. Your eye make up is *chef’s kiss*
Second generation fan here. My mom was a fan during the series' original run, though she was forbidden from watching it by my step-grandfather after he saw the scene where Jeremiah put Angelique in an open grave. She would sneak and still watch anyway. I would see bits and pieces during the syndicated reruns in the 80's, and finally was able to see the entire series on Sci-fi Channel (now known as Syfy) beginning in 1995. I have been a fan ever since.
Ahhh same! My mom was into the original as a kid + introduced me to the 80s one when I was around the same age (a teen) because I was a Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan. I still watch it every year for nostalgia; maybe this year I'll add the original.
I watched this show over and over with my grandma as a kid!!! Don't really know what that says about me or her, but we had a great time and I am excited for this!!
Omg 2+ hours?? Cozy coverage of a crazy vampire show?? Perfect pairing to the jenny nicholson vampire diaries video in my endless video essay rewatch cycle ☺️
@@Laura_5757 it's mostly (like 95%) about the TV show but she does briefly cover the books! more the history of the book series than the contents of it though
Jonathan Frid’s performance took on a whole new dimension after I learned he was closeted at the time. There are now so many small elements I notice and wonder if the production threw them in on purpose.
Hello! My cousin forwarded this to me. Honestly, you should have her as a Co-Host. She is an original viewer who watched it from the beginning to the end. I vividly remember her telling me the story from beginning to end. She has three adult children, all who were named after a character in the series!
I specifically remember reports during the production of the movie that Burton and co were filming with no idea of what the tone could or should be. Maybe seems like something you’d figure out in pre-production but not this time, I guess
It was a parody. It was way over the top and I love it. I also love the show. I watched it after school every day with my whole family. I think the problem is people take the movie way to seriously. Oh and " this family could use some ball's". How can anyone take it seriously? People need to chill out a little.
Actually, Tim Burton didn't fail. This movie had exactly the campy comedy vibe he wanted. It did really well when released theatrically in the world market. It turned enough of a profit that a possible franchise was discussed.
Doll collector here. Age can be determined from a lot of things; Maker/patent marks, construction, materials, even something as simple as fashion (Dolls were often dressed in fashions of the time to match the child who owned them.).
I love that we can learn things in the comments from people educated in the field :3 It's also funny that it never occured to me that older dolls were also "keeping up with the fashion" because I remember how Bratz dolls in the early 2000s were outselling barbies in part because they had a more "up to date" fashion look while Barbie was still a bit behind. For some reason I kind of assumed any earlier than 1920 the dolls just looked "how adults thought babies should look".
@@moontokkym_art Not all dolls were babies, though it was a trend pre-Barbie. Plenty were young girls like the ones who owned them, and the thing about children’s clothing was up until pretty recently (Victorian era), the line between children’s clothing and adult clothing was blurry and children often wore smaller versions of what adults were wearing.
i'm a dark shadows fan and a doll collector, Sarah and her little doll live rent free in my brain. my favorite little overlooked detail is that in one episode it's revealed the doll is named "Samantha."
I can't decide whether your eye look reads as delightfully off halloween vampire dark eyebags OR even more delightfully off 1960s twiggy mod eyeliner. I love it either way
Woah. I don't know who this person is; I don't know why this was recommended to me, but I am so damned impressed. I watched the whole Dark Shadows series 3 times, while at university, a "few" years back. I am blown away with this person's knowledge and eye for the little details in this series. Damn! I cannot wait until part 2! And I love the faces Hall pulls too.
I tried watching Dark Shadows a few years ago and found it difficult with how drawn-out everything was but this video makes me want to give it another try because wow is this more insane than I remember!!!
I watched the original series as a child and was obsessed with it. I have the original soundtrack album and got it autographed by Jonathan Frid when he came to my town. He was playing in a production of Arsenic & Old Lace.
This monumental documentary has brought back ancient memories of my childhood. I recall racing home after school, turning on our black and white Zenith television just in time to hear the spooky intro theme. You have filled in a lot of gaps which has brought to me a new appreciation for this vintage horror soap. I greatly admire your humor and succinct dialog. Thank you!
I have similar memories as a little girl, of running the two blocks from the elementary school to make it home in time to watch Dark Shadows. My dad didn't watch the soap opera, but, when the movie was released, he took us to the theatre to watch it. Good times, great memories.
@@LannieLord We got out at 3:00. Walked home which took about 20-25 minutes. Then had to change out of our Catholic School uniforms. Grabbed a snack then waited a few minutes for it to begin at 4. This was in 1966.
I had a seminar about storytelling and my professor was very fond of soap operas. He said that they were technically the highest form of storytelling - because it never ends. This kind of stuck with me and i started to watch a teen soap opera (house of anubis, probably not very known outside of europe i think but I'm not sure lol) and really appreciated the unique storytelling xD Anyways! Very excited to watch your dark shadows deepdive. Im now 30min in and I'm absolutely loving it. Might even watch it one day!
Oh dear, I started watching a David video too late at night and fell asleep, meaning I'll have to give it ANOTHER view because I was hooked from the start? Oh noooo. However shall I survive.
Discovered this show back in the ninth grade on the old-timey reruns channel during that October. I ended up loving it so much that my mom (who watched the show air when she was a kid in the 60s) started watching it with me throughout the entire marathon. I look back nine years later on that October really fondly, it absolutely sets the mood spectacularly and my mom still binge watches it periodically. It’s truly for viewers of all ages!!
I love the sound of your Mum. It's always nice when a parent joins (in a non embarrassing way) their child in an enthusiasm. It is also a very smart thing to do - it is a great way to make sure your child finds it easy to talk to their parent, which is very important for a good parent. And a loving one. She sounds a good egg.
You are a total legend for making this! Dark Shadows is my favorite show - I'm assuming I'm about your age, and MAN not enough people know about it. It's so great seeing the love for it. There aren't enough melodramatic gothic soaps. There just aren't.
Coming home from school in time to watch "Dark Shadows" is one of my favorite memories. My sister and I would watch, eagerly waiting for the mistakes: the door that didn't close until a phantom hand from the other side would close it, the female doctor who kept staring at the camera instead of looking at the actor she was supposed to be talking to, the translucent liquid that was supposed to be blood, the actors who would walk in front of the camera while the credits were rolling. The show was great. The actors were, mostly, talented, and we loved the show. The oop'ses just made us love it even more.
I always ran home to watch too. I was crushed when either elementary school hours changed to half an hour later dismissal or the tv show aired half an hour earlier( don’t know which one). I also collected the cards for this show(like baseball cards that had a stick of gum in there with them).
This was absolutely spectacular! I can't wait to see the time travel story and then I hope you go on to do the rest of this wonderful series...the Leviathans, The Hand of Count Patofi, the Quentin Collins stories, the Werewolf, Adam and Eve, Parallel time, the cursed room and all the rest of it. You tell the story in a fun way and have inspired me to get out my complete DVDs of the series and go through the entire show again. Thank you so much. This has been brilliant. I'm subscribed and ready for more.
Just finished! You should 100 % be proud of this video. Watching Dark Shadows is a years long feat, let alone recapping it, let alone recapping it in video form. I'm not a hard core fan of the show but I'm fond of it so thank you for spreading the word. I'm super happy to hear that there might be more in a few weeks, but even if this became a yearly halloween event I'd be glad to have something extra to look forward to each season.
I am posting a comment during your "break" to note that at the time when the early Dark Shadows episodes first aired, the late director, Roger Corman was notorious for his then-current Poe films (with Vincent Price) and his biker films--all "B" movies. When Carolyn began to have her affair with Buzz, suddenly these two genres merged as one on "Dark Shadows for about two weeks! Dark Shadows 1966/67 was influenced by both Hammer Films and American International Pictures. Back to the Great House of Collinwood...
An hour in and I had to pause at the fire extinguisher sounds because I was laughing too much at the "whoosh" interrupting like an impatient child xD. Loving the video so far, I shall continue watching now. *a wolf howls in the distance*
This is an absolute Halloween treat! So greatful you put all this heart and effort in it and it is so cozy and enjoyable. I wouldn’t mind if the second part would come out later! It is worth the wait!
In my edgy vampire obsessed teen years (late 90s) I remember hearing about this show. From what I heard it revolutionized how people saw vampires and showed the in a more human and sympathetic light. I never had a chance to actually sit down and watch it so I always assumed it was some kind of drama love story about a vampire! Imagine my surprise when I by chance come across your video and learn that not only is there way more drama and plot points than I expected but Barty is acykind of a jerk! 😂 Currently in two days I'm at the halfway mark, but I am utterly entranced by you guide of this show! I would be so flabbergasted to sit down and watch the show only for the vampire to not show up till 200 episodes in!! You're doing great, excellent video, thank you for your hard work and research!!👏👏👏
I clicked so fast! Hey make sure you take care of yourself. EDIT: You have done such a fantastic job explaining the show, its importance and just how fascinating and entertaining it is.
I love the 60s/70s obsessions either gothic literature and art. I’m a fan of vintage romance novels, and gothic romances where a woman in a gown running away from a castle at night on the cover DOMINATED the market. You just don’t get that kind of melodramatics nowadays.
1966, I was in elementary school, age 9. I was a fan of only 2 shows back then. Dark Shadows and Star Trek. People forget that DS was contemporary to ST. We used to play either DS or ST at recess, one of the kids in my class looked like a young Barnabas and even wore his hair with the gel waves. We discovered that a red grading pencil (purloined from a teacher) could be licked a bit and would make "good" teeth marks on your neck. Of course, this "good" was subject to the 9 year old mind, but we had a blast. Other days we had our phasers on stun hunting bad guys. And yes, I ran the two blocks home every day to see DS. I started writing back then, either one of the shows, I just had to write with the characters. Of course, being young, you have an obligation to put yourself into the story, my "Mary Sue" character was Alisandra Collins and my Star Trek character was Lt Kere'sa Lea Stuart Kirk. Alisandra was Barnabas's ward and Kere'sa had been adopted by Capt. Kirk and was on the ship. This experience in writing came in handy in the 1980s when I was writing fan fiction. We published a few fanzines in those days and it was fun. Then responsibilities and such got in the way and I had to stop writing for a bit. I came back to it in 2012. and the bug that bit me had fangs. My first book, Lilly's Angel, came out in 2013. It was supposed to be a little 3-way romance between a vampire named Marcus Lancaster, the prostitute he turned named Lilly Marchantel, and the angel who she rescued after he was beat up and she turned to save his live, Sullivan. But it took off in my head and I now have 5 books out, I have vampires, angels, angelic vampires (Marcus is trying to make a vampire army out of angels to assault heaven) and a vampire cat. Book 6 isn't out, I have had some family stuff going on and the writing, sadly, is on hold for the moment. But Marcus, Lilly, and Sully, along with Baron Bast von Samedi the cat (Baron) are a direct outgrowth of my love of vampires that was started when I met Barnabas Collins and the Collins family back in grade school. I'm old now, even the grandkids are older or adults and they don't know Dark Shadows, although I've tried to show them. And yes, Johnny Depp's version was a total abomination IMO and I can't believe the remaining cast did a cameo in it (I've not seen it, just heard about it.). Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Love this content.
I found this and am watching this on Halloween !Magnificent job, Thank You. I would run home from elementary school to watch DS, I collected the DS cards (like baseball cards), had my mother buy the soundtrack album for me, and decades later bought DS DVD set. This The Insanity of Dark Shadows is loved by me every bit as much as is Dark Shadows. I wish you all the best. Thanks again.
finding and watching this video has made me extraordinarily happy! i remember when the Dark Shadows movie came out, and that we were both excited to see it. my mom shared stories of the original show that she enjoyed so much, and we wondered how the movie would explore the show. that was so long ago now, and i miss her more than i can express. coming across things like this are like gifts from her spirit, reminding me of how much we both love a good story, and how often a little cheesy drama is just what you need to get through the day!🤣 thank you for giving me your thoughts and insights on the show so far, i'm looking forward to what you'll share next! but don't run yourself ragged. you're doing a great job!🎉 "SPOOKY SEASON" isn't just this time of year... for some of us, it's all the time! so don't rush, take care of yourself, and we'll all enjoy it together when it's ready. thank you again!💙🎃💀
I'll admit, I never heard of this story before hearing about your plans for this video, but this was fascinating! I really wasn't prepared for the bloopers being left in, never knew that was a thing, wild. And just generally, what a fascinating premise for a show. I'm excited to see the next video! (and no rush on it!)
This is the first video of yours I've found (thank you algo) and I gotta say you have SUCH a lovely voice! It's nice finding a video on a relatively "niche" show I grew up obsessed with bc of my uncle, too
I was also in grade school when Dark Shadows began, Every afternoon after school we'd all be watching. It's funny that I remember Buzz as a major character, although he only appeared in a couple of episodes. I guess he made an impression on me. After the episode in the Blue Whale where he turned his chair around and sat on it backwards, I started to do the same, I'd sit that way all though my teen years. I'll still occasionally turn my chair around in tribute to Buzz. Thanks for the great video David.
Hi! Thanks for doing this video, it was really interesting. I had never seen this show before and I had watched the 2012 video with my mom when it was in the dollar theater and I don’t remember too much of the movie other than my mom was disappointed it wasn’t better. The show sounds insane and I think I’m gonna look it up on and see what’s streaming services it’s on and watch it. Hope you feel better soon.
THIS VIDEO IS FANTASTIC. I would label it a rousing success!!! Thank you thank you for this! I saw the soundtrack for the TV show on vinyl at my local record store but didn't think much of it. 20 minutes in to this video, I paused and called the store to have them put that record on hold for me. I will start my viewing journey ASAP!
This show reminds me a lot of early Doctor Who. It’s imperfect and cheesy but also incredibly creative and iconic. I’m tempted to watch it, but I dunno if I could get through 300+ episodes
300+ episodes? Multiply that by 4. Dark Shadows is the ONLY soap opera in broadcast history to have preserved all 1225 episodes, and all are available on DVD and streaming.. Well, 1 later episode is lost, at least the visuals. Even the lost videotapes of about 40 eps have been preserved by kinescope copies, which are films of the videotapes.
Im not a soap fan but Im perpetually annoyed at how poorly archived a lot of long running ones are simply because I ocassionally hear about a really interesting or just plain bonkers plotline a Soap once did and get curious. Someone built a weather machine on General Hospital and almost destroyed the city and you cant find the episodes anywhere and that drives me nuts
OMG OMG OMG THANK YOU for this summary and PLEASE finish it. I was in grade school when Dark Shadows aired and I remember hurrying home from school to watch it… only to be too afraid to! As an adult I have tried on many, many occasions to watch only to smack my head against the, ah, “formal limitations” of budget constrained long serialized content. You are making whole an aching void in my soul and I am eternally grateful.
Nearly two hours into your amazing video, and as nerd who studies the history of dolls, i can't help but coment 😂 The Sarah's doll looks like they used an actual antique Peg-Wooden/Pennywooden/Dutch Doll. There were thousands made in the late 1800s and sent world wide, befor they stoped being made almost completely around ww1 (they were sort of like hand carved, hand painted barbies) so it would have been really easy for the props department to find some of these old dolls to find for a few bucks at a thrift store/one of their own attics to use, even if the doll was already nearing 100 in real life. So....much as i hate to defend that doctor... it is possible his grandmother had one from her childhood or something and he recognized it 🤓 Your video is grea! Ive only been able to find and watch a couple Dark Shadows episodes, but I've been intrigued by the show for years!
actually this means, hillariously, that the doll would technically be out of date, because Sarah, though I dont think I specifically mentioned this in the video, dies in 1795. so the doll is actually one hundred years off from there intended time period. But I think its fascinating you were able to identify it! thank you so much! as for Dark Shadows- its now on all free-with-ads streaming sites like Roku and Tubi!
@@DavidMChannelthank you! Now I can binge watch the episodes to get ready for Halloween! That is hilarious! I couldn't remember when Barnabas was from, and Sarah's fashion seems to be a bit of 1790s and 1820s.... by way of the early 1900s illustrator Kate Greenaway, so that was no help for my history buff brain 😂 Kudos to the props department though, because though that doll was very definitely late 1800s/early 1900s, it is a later, simpler version of the wealthy childrens fashion dolls from the late 1700s. With no budget they did much better then a lot of modern tv shows- in this extremely niche way 😂 Can't wait for the next part of your Dark Shadows series!
I am in the process of re-watching DS for the third time (first when it originally aired, second when it came out on VHS, and now watching it on my sister’s DVD’s) and just the other day, saw this scene. Dr. Woodard explains that he took the doll to some woman at the local library who apparently knows something about antique dolls.
Your coverage is riveting!!! I’m a new subscriber and I’ve never seen such a fabulous overview of this topic!!! I can’t wait until part deux!! A work of art!
thats what most soaps had to do for a LONG time. this schedules still very much in place for soaps like General Hospital as well, though I think they do three a week instead (and they're longer)
GENERAL HOSPITAL has five new one-hour episodes every week, which is twice as much content as DARK SHADOWS was putting out in its heyday. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS has the same schedule, while THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL I think is the only remaining soap that has five half-hour episodes per week like DARK SHADOWS.
@oliverbrownlow5615 Worth noting that iirc most of those shows have much larger budgets, which means more characters per episode, so the amount of dialogue is spread out a lot more. One of the reasons Johnathan Frid flubbed his lines so often is simply that it was a *lot* to memorize. And none of those shows are filmed without editing out anymore. Also -I dont think this is your intention but the use of all-capital letters for the shows comes off as shouting which is a bit off-putting. Just a basic bit of 'net-ettiquete'. If you feel the need to distinguish the titles from the rest of your sentence, you can capitalize them.
@@DavidMChannel My preference would be to boldface, italicize, or underline titles, but none of these options seem to be avaliable on UA-cam now. I'm aware that some people consider "all-caps" to be shouting, but simply capitalizing titles doesn't seem to me to set them off from the rest of the text sufficiently. I often get confused reading other people's comments including titles as to where the title begins and ends. Therefore, pardon me.
I cannot even begin how much this video was a delight to experience. The love and excitement you display about this show was endearing and kept me here the entire two and a half hours. I cannot wait to dive into the rest of your videos and stay on to see part two of this project!
I’m sorry you’re having a hard time! This is a great video thanks! Keep your head up there will be. Better job, you cannot have a rainbow 🌈 without the rain… breathe..sendng you lots of positive energy!
Thanks for this. What an ambitious show! It's kind of amazing that the network took a chance on it, given that there really hadn't been anything like it on daytime TV before.
this was incredibly fun! i could tell you had fun making this, and that you put a lot of work in. i'm glad you turned the project into a multi-video thing instead of just trying to power through and stress yourself out worse. plus now we all get to look forward to part 2!
Happy to have stumbled upon this…I remember watching this show as a kid with my mom when she found the series for rent at blockbuster. she had nostalgia for it from when it was originally on tv when she was a kid. i had NO idea what was going on but always thought it was funny when the actors would mess up the lines and just had to go with it
Ok finally finished! I’m sorry for using this comments section as my personal diary but it’s just so exciting to see someone diving into a major hyperfixation of mine with such enthusiasm and appreciation 😊 I’m sorry you’ve been depressed lately and I hope you take the time you need to replenish yourself. That said, I eagerly await part 2 whenever you post it! Bravo 🎉
32:20 This kidnapping plot is also a bit reminiscent of the original 1932 Mummy movie, in the "dead love reincarnated" bit. 1:09:30 Trying to cure a vampire isn’t totally novel. See House of Dracula (1945). In that movie, the doctor tried to cure him with blood transfusions. It always struck me as having influenced this plot in Dark Shadows.
The scenes with the bat are some of the most hilarious. This show has such a deep and special piece of my heart. The bloopers. The drama. The camp. I’ve been watching the show over again and have recently made it to the time travel part. Can’t wait for your review of that!
Amazing video. Dark shadows means a lot to my family. My Uncle worked on this show. Often times if there was need of a close up of a hand or other mysterious body part he would step in. He used to say they once glued a pigs eye to his face to play a monster. IMDb used to have him credited as “the ghost of Jeremiah.” Otherwise he mostly worked behind the scenes. Him and some others from the show did a lot of community theater work in New York. His house was my favorite place to go when my mom needed a babysitter. I credit him for my interest in horror and the arts.
The doll wouldn't need to be carbon dated. It would just need to be shown to an antique dealer (in 1960s - don't do it today). How it was made would narrow it down (wood was common 1600s thru early 1800s. China, bisque would follow. Composition and joints would date it. Hair fibers (human hair, wool, mohair). How the face was painted, hair style and dress would date. Said part: children often made these dolls in factories who would never be able to afford them.
I raced home from kindergarten to see this show in the '60s. Missed so much of the show after that. Thanks for catching us up on so many plot lines. Sorry you're having a rough patch. Follow your passions, maybe work will come out of one of them. Best of luck! Thoughts on DS... @ 58:50ish Could Hoffman's weird glances be an effort to find her lines on a cue card off-camera? re: Victoria actress, was she related to the producer? Thanks!
Great job! I was in grade school when I would watch it with my mother and no other soap opera interested me until I was beat up in high school and stayed home for a few weeks and started watching ALL MY CHILDREN with my mom. I noticed from your video the actor that played PALMER CORTLAND was also in Dark Shadows. Thank you for all of the trivia and again, very good job!
Watched the show with my parents in the 80's. We always had dinner and watched Dark Shadows on weeknights, from the first episode until the last. Years ago my dad got me the Bloopers VHS for Christmas. This is wonderful. Thank you!
Thank you for this! It was so fun to relive the show. I watched it in the 90's when it ran on sci-fi channel. It was unique and wacky and occasionally really spooky.
Im at the first intermission and goddddddd i really wish i wasnt too busy with other projects to watch this show at the moment because it seems like something I would ADORE, i literally gasped out loud when you showed the clip of Julia tricking Barnabas
I'm so excited for part 3! I love when people recap things that they obviously care about, It's like I'm watching someone's favorite show with them or something. I was expecting no part 2 or to wait at least another 6 months, so a month or two is shockingly soon
This labor of love was fantastic fun to watch I laughed so much you are really likable and wonderfully comedic and I loved all of your interjections and moody lighting and even runny eyeliner. Looking forward to more❤
I'm Brazilian, when I was a child I saw the 2012 film on a show on an open channel (globo tv) that showed films in the afternoon ( the name is sessão da tarde), I became obsessed with the soundtrack, the humor, the visuals (I had recognized that it was by burton) I rewatched it many times on Netflix (even though I'm already 19 and can see some flaws). When I discovered that it was based on a soap opera I went to see if I could find the episodes with subtitles (I still didn't hear English very well), I failed miserably, it wasn't brought here ( just the movies did), so I'm happy for this video as I probably wouldn't watch it due to its size (I didn't know that your soap operas last a lifetime, ours last + or - 200 eps with few exceptions and Doctor Who gave me enough work). Interestingly, in Brazil we had a soap opera called "O beijo do vampiro" (The vampire's kiss) from the early 2000s ( it's more comical but still had the drama) and we had another called "Vamp" from the beginning of the 90s that were about vampire gangs in contemporary times.
Everybody I went to school with in the late 1960s would rush home from school to watch this school, then talk about it the next day! So creepy for kids! Which equals success!
You are my 1960s/70s TV show soulmate! I did indeed get really excited and whoop out loud when you mentioned Julia! This has been such a really super fun video to watch, and I haven’t even gotten through all that yet and I’m just loving it. Can’t wait to watch the second part! It is almost 1:30 AM on 3 December, I am one hour and 30 minutes into this video, you have just said not too long ago that you don’t expect anyone to watch this all in one go. Challenge accepted! I will be subscribing to your channel. My first exposure to dark shadows was the 1991 reboot at 11, I later found the original because my mother used to watch the show and loved it. Which is really weird because she normally doesn’t like anything sci-fi or fantasy. The only exceptions are dark shadows., and Star Trek.
I just finished this and bravo! I can't imagine how daunting an undertaking this was given the amount of material covered here. This has reignited my desire to watch the show and I can't wait to dive in!
Hello there, UK casual watcher of the show. I absolutely adored this video you have spent so long creating. It works brilliantly. And it's re-whetted my DS whistle. I hope things have improved in some of the areas you touch upon in the for video for you, I loved your honesty and I'm sending you love and support. I can't wait for part 2 but take the time you need with it xxx
First off, I will say - this was a fine dive into the Dark Shadows. Thanks for doing it. Then I will rant a bit about Barnabas Collins. What a great character he was! I never saw Dark Shadows growing up, although I did watch a lot of vampire films & TV shows. I mostly found modern vampires way to lame and moody. They seldom had any balls, if you know what I mean. They were never on top of the game, never smart and powerful. For example, whats his name from Twilight, 100+ years old and acting like any idiot teenager. Then I ran across Barnabas, as melodramatic as he often was, and unhappy about his vampire life, he was so well written and acted. A character with a memorable spark. Not quite charming, but definitely having charisma. He was confident and usually in control. He did not whine and mope about endlessly. He was a villain you could enjoy. A real challenge to be outwitted.
So this is the Dark Shadows my mom always used to tell me about, with the trees on set that wobbled if you bumped into them! Now that I know about the budget and shooting issues, I think what they accomplished was remarkable. I might not have the compatibility to watch the whole thing, but thank you for helping people like me appreciate it a little more and maybe sample it.
This has just popped up in my board and I'm so glad!! I remember seen dark shadows from Tim Burton in the movie theater years ago and I can't remember anything about that movie, it was pretty unremarkable to me, but I got so invested in this video, I didn't know about this show at all!! I might look it up now and watch it while working out or cooking. I look foreward to the next part of your video too, I'm glad I found your channel 💘💘 I hope you feel better by the time I'm writting this comment and that things have worked out better for you these weeks
I was in grade school when this gothic soap opera was in vogue. Every kid in my school raced home to watch it. We were in near hysteria as fans of the show. We couldn’t stop talking about it every day. Barnabas Collins was my generation’s Harry Potter.
I was in Jr Hi when it started back in the 60s. We made fun of it at school, but we'd never miss an episode!
Me too! I still have the board game from back in the day. Barnabas Collins was amazing.
Same here - when was the school day going to end so we could all go home and watch “the show?”
That was my telenovela!
The show was on at 4:00 PM / 4:30 . School ends at 2:45 (aprox.) Why run home ?
love the start of this. "yeah, so she shows up, heres the family anddddd... we're 200 episodes later. thats where we're really going to start"
Same, my comic book page now has its flat colours because what's 2,5 hours when there's 24 hours in the day, really? xD
keep in mind this was initially meant to be one single, four our long video xD
@@DavidMChannel Missed opportunity! I would’ve gotten all my chem work done in just one video, not four videos!
@@DavidMChannel I think for your wellbeing it's best to split it xD
the time-honored tradition of doing homework to Dark Shadows
I fantasize that the final scene in the final episode when all story lines have been resolved Dr Hoffman and Elizabeth Stoddard are alone in the drawing room. Elizabeth hands Julia an envelope. “What’s this?” says Julia. Liz replies “It’s a bill for five years of room and board.” Fade out.
Love it!
I watched with my Mamaw too.
Omg 2+ hours?? Cozy coverage of a crazy vampire show?? Perfect pairing to the jenny nicholson vampire diaries video in my endless video essay rewatch cycle ☺️
Ooh, does that Vampire Diaries video cover the books or the tv show? I absolutely adored the books and read the entire series several times
@@Laura_5757 it's mostly (like 95%) about the TV show but she does briefly cover the books! more the history of the book series than the contents of it though
@@aw7145 Aw, that’s too bad cause the books were really good :) But thanks for responding and I’ll check out the video!
this show is THE crazy vampire show and yet no one knows it. it's my own little crazy show.
watching for 2nd time
Jonathan Frid’s performance took on a whole new dimension after I learned he was closeted at the time. There are now so many small elements I notice and wonder if the production threw them in on purpose.
Queercoding is inherent to the vampire trope, so it makes sense
@@juliamavroidi8601 except that Barnabas loves women ??
Hello! My cousin forwarded this to me. Honestly, you should have her as a Co-Host. She is an original viewer who watched it from the beginning to the end. I vividly remember her telling me the story from beginning to end. She has three adult children, all who were named after a character in the series!
Tim Burton failed because he couldn’t decide if it was supposed to be a parody like the Brady bunch movie
Trying to fit dark shadows in two hours is impossible
I specifically remember reports during the production of the movie that Burton and co were filming with no idea of what the tone could or should be. Maybe seems like something you’d figure out in pre-production but not this time, I guess
@@somethingclever8916 Ι mean you can jsut not fit the whole show in a movie, I wouldn't say he even tried to do so.
I love it either way
Twiggy Mod, definitely. 😅 We need to bring that back.
Thank you!
Plus, we had to hide our watching it from my mom, so one kid had to always be on the lookout!
I have similar memories as a little girl, of running the two blocks from the elementary school to make it home in time to watch Dark Shadows.
My dad didn't watch the soap opera, but, when the movie was released, he took us to the theatre to watch it. Good times, great memories.
Ok, everyone says they "ran home" but the show was on at 4PM and school ends at 2:45 . What gives ?
@@LannieLord We got out at 3:00. Walked home which took about 20-25 minutes. Then had to change out of our Catholic School uniforms. Grabbed a snack then waited a few minutes for it to begin at 4. This was in 1966.
Up vote for the recreated intro. Genuinely made me laugh, gods, I needed that. 👏👏👏
I had a seminar about storytelling and my professor was very fond of soap operas. He said that they were technically the highest form of storytelling - because it never ends. This kind of stuck with me and i started to watch a teen soap opera (house of anubis, probably not very known outside of europe i think but I'm not sure lol) and really appreciated the unique storytelling xD
Anyways! Very excited to watch your dark shadows deepdive. Im now 30min in and I'm absolutely loving it. Might even watch it one day!
I was obsessed with house of anubis as a kid lmao. it was remade for US audiences! and great! glad youre enjoying!
House of Anubis got a different German remake too. I wonder if there are other remakes as well?
Hope ur life took a turn for the better. I really enjoyed this video as Dark Shadows holds a special place in my childhood memories.
17:20 that's my coloring book! I'm the artist! Ps I'm getting the paper doll book published next
This was fun! Good job! My mother didn't want us watching "Dark Shadows," so we had to sneak views and missed most of it. Thanks for filling us in!
Thank you for this. This was one of my mom’s favorite shows when she was in college. Hence why my name is Josette 😂. It’s now one of my favorites!
It was the early 90s when I watched Dark Shadows. A friend of mine found the entire series on VHS at a thrift store. This brings me back. 😊 ❤
I lived for this show as a kid.
This is an absolute Halloween treat! So greatful you put all this heart and effort in it and it is so cozy and enjoyable. I wouldn’t mind if the second part would come out later! It is worth the wait!
I did enjoy it. VERY MUCH. Thank you, sir. I will be here for part 2.
I'm pausing it every so often but it's basically one sitting. This was my mom's FAVORITE show in her childhood so let's GOOOOOOO
Currently in two days I'm at the halfway mark, but I am utterly entranced by you guide of this show! I would be so flabbergasted to sit down and watch the show only for the vampire to not show up till 200 episodes in!!
You're doing great, excellent video, thank you for your hard work and research!!👏👏👏
I clicked so fast! Hey make sure you take care of yourself.
EDIT:
You have done such a fantastic job explaining the show, its importance and just how fascinating and entertaining it is.
I love the 60s/70s obsessions either gothic literature and art. I’m a fan of vintage romance novels, and gothic romances where a woman in a gown running away from a castle at night on the cover DOMINATED the market. You just don’t get that kind of melodramatics nowadays.
And on every single gothic romance cover, the haunted-looking castle or mansion was depicted with one window lighted.
At this point this channel is just catered to me. I don't know how you do it, or why, but whoever you are, thank you
1966, I was in elementary school, age 9.
Where can others find your books?
I don't think anyone else has longform DS recap videos like this. Bravo.
thanks Im kind of nuts like that lmao, glad you enjoyed!

this on Halloween !Magnificent job, Thank You. Thanks again.
finding and watching this video has made me extraordinarily happy! i remember when the Dark Shadows movie came out, and that we were both excited to see it. my mom shared stories of the original show that she enjoyed so much, and we wondered how the movie would explore the show.
that was so long ago now, and i miss her more than i can express.
coming across things like this are like gifts from her spirit, reminding me of how much we both love a good story, and how often a little cheesy drama is just what you need to get through the day!🤣

So excited to watch this! Love your videos!
THIS VIDEO IS FANTASTIC. I would label it a rousing success!!! Thank you thank you for this! I saw the soundtrack for the TV show on vinyl at my local record store but didn't think much of it. 20 minutes in to this video, I paused and called the store to have them put that record on hold for me. the soundtrack is *delightfully* campy and spooky. you'll love it, I swear! Enjoy the show! just be patient with it!
@@DavidMChannel I can't wait!
This show reminds me a lot of early Doctor Who. It’s imperfect and cheesy but also incredibly creative and iconic. I’m tempted to watch it, but I dunno if I could get through 300+ episodes
It's worth it. Trust me. It's all worth it.
300+ episodes? Multiply that by 4. Dark Shadows is the ONLY soap opera in broadcast history to have preserved all 1225 episodes, and all are available on DVD and streaming.. Well, 1 later episode is lost, at least the visuals. Even the lost videotapes of about 40 eps have been preserved by kinescope copies, which are films of the videotapes.
lol it's over 1000 episodes. the good thing is theyre all pretty bite-sized, around 25 minutes tops.
I love this show!! Didn't realize how much I needed a video like this!
oh snap! i didn’t realize this came out??? cannot wait to watch. thank you for your hard work and i hope you are resting!!!
I couldn't remember when Barnabas was from, and Sarah's fashion seems to be a bit of 1790s and 1820s.... by way of the early 1900s illustrator Kate Greenaway, so that was no help for my history buff brain 😂
Kudos to the props department though, because though that doll was very definitely late 1800s/early 1900s, it is a later, simpler version of the wealthy childrens fashion dolls from the late 1700s. With no budget they did much better then a lot of modern tv shows- in this extremely niche way 😂
Can't wait for the next part of your Dark Shadows series!
I agree it would be a wood doll.
Back then the doctor would have taken it to a museum or Antique shop and have it looked at.
Five new episodes a WEEK is crazy
thats what most soaps had to do for a LONG time. this schedules still very much in place for soaps like General Hospital as well, though I think they do three a week instead (and they're longer)
You had me at “Quentin Reviews-esque”
Bravo 🎉
Also if you ever want feedback I know us kooks on the discord would likely be happy to help!
Took me two days to finish 😮 this was good. Loved listening to this. Can't wait for the next vids😊 keep up the excellent work
32:20 This kidnapping plot is also a bit reminiscent of the original 1932 Mummy movie, in the "dead love reincarnated" bit.
1:09:30 Trying to cure a vampire isn’t totally novel. See House of Dracula (1945). In that movie, the doctor tried to cure him with blood transfusions. It always struck me as having influenced this plot in Dark Shadows.
Omg what a throwback! I binged most of this show in high school, it’s so camp in the best way! Great review 👏
Most anticipated video of the year!!!! 😭💗
Great recap. It’s been fun reviewing it without having to watch the whole thing. Brings back great memories. Thanks
The scenes with the bat are some of the most hilarious. This show has such a deep and special piece of my heart. The bloopers. The drama. The camp.
I’ve been watching the show over again and have recently made it to the time travel part. Can’t wait for your review of that!
Seeing your message at the end. Take care of yourself! I appreciate the work you’ve put into this video.
Was that Timothy Gordon? I met him at one of the DS conventions over 30 years ago. He was a very nice man,
I remember this show. Kids were crazy about Barnabas. Turns out I just don't care for vampires; never did, never will.
Hope you're feeling better! Looking forward to the next video!
Just started and can't wait to watch the rest!
(Adding the timestamp for the family tree when I inevitably forget who's who 4:08)
I raced home from kindergarten to see this show in the '60s.
Thanks!
Would you do the whole series? This is so good. Um...found it this morning and the time past when I should have been up with cats. 🤣
Dark Shadows was so good. Way before it's time in the Soap Opera world, but that is what made it soooo good.
Thank you!
I'm sorry you're going through a rough time and I hope you feel better soon 💕
The lighting and the mustache gives you a Vincent Price look.
"Jesus Christ, my dear, just call down!" I love it!
So much deliciousness in this video! Thank you. I’ve seen much of the series and I enjoyed your commentary.
I love this video-it is weirdly comforting! Thank you for putting it into the world.
You are so welcome!
