  • After a short break I'll continue the uploads. And we'll stay in the late 80's early 90's for a couple of uploads to come.
This next show is Elton's tribute show to late Dee Murray. It was played in Nashville at the Grande Ole Opry House, the 15th of March 1992. Elton had obviously chosen to do concert solo and this show is got of some quite interesting points.
What is very interesting is that Elton used his Steinway grand piano for this show which he stopped using in 1986.
Also, this show was one of the first public shows without the band. Elton did a lot of Ray Cooper concerts during the 70's but never a solo show with only him and the piano (only once in Scotland in 1976 which is on my channel!). The show contains the first solo version of 'Burn Down The Mission', 'Philadelphia Freedom' (which is awesome!), 'The North' (which is rarely played - he played it during the Ray Cooper concerts in 1993 and 1994), and 'That's What Friends Are For' (which is the only performance only by Elton as far as I know).
We have to remember that this show was a memorial concert and therefor the rock songs like 'Burn Down The Mission', 'Philadelphia Freedom', and especially 'Bennie And The Jets' is a bit inappropiate.
However, this show is an excellent show and the quality is in fantastic soundboard quality.
    -Enjoy!

This was one of the song’s Elton sang when I organized his first demo session at Regent Sound, Denmark street London, following him answering my Liberty ad seeking new talent!
I was also at Dee’s memorial show and Eton’s performance was fantastic, it bought tears to eyes a truly fine tribute to our lovely Dee!

The crowd's reaction once Elton begins the first line is lovely, they all recognize what a classic the song is.

I LOVE that he can't even finish the song without the audience screaming with joy. THAT is the reception a REAL performer gets.

At 0:28, so glad to hear he paid tribute to Jim Reeves' voice. There was clip of the Rolling Stones covering "Bob Wills is Still the King", and I really dug it when Sir Mick invoked Waylon Jennings' name.

His voice here could almost pass for a 1979 Elton. Cool.

Yes. I think the voice change was more just a function how he preferred to sing, rather than something that was imposed on him.

Saw him perform this at Universal Studios Amphitheatre in CA back in '79 during the "Back in the USSA" tour with Ray Cooper. Best show I've ever seen.

I was there for 7 of the 10 shows. I had waited almost 4 years to the day to see him once again. The previous time was on October 26,1975 at Dodgers Stadium

Saw Elton sing this in 1979 in Manchester UK, great memories - he also started a song (Bennie & The Jets I think) with the Match of the Day theme tune!

Elton actually did make the country charts in 2005. For that matter, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler's done some country, but I don't know if any of his works charted.
