"If they're mono-red mill they might just not have graveyard hate." Saffron preparing for even the off-meta match-ups. "We are Soulherder Surprising in modern." That would be quite the surprise if a Soulherder came down from this deck. I love Saffron. XD
I think this is a really good, being a deck that is a graveyard combo deck that prays on everyone swapping to hate cards game 2 only to become a mill deck. This is so meta that is a product of mtgs competitive scene as a whole. Would love to see more decks like this in the future but it's hard to make a bait and switch with only a 15 card side board
@@MultrakSin if you are sideboarding to beat graveyard hate putting in a card that is terrible vs that same hate is a really bad idea. You want your transformational sideboard to blank the opponents expected sideboarding
This might be the most amazing Much Abrew deck I've ever seen... Truly a thing of beauty. They asked an angel to name this deck but it could only weep...
I’d replace all four Jace’s Phantasms with wither Extirpates or Surgical Extractions (probably the latter), for the reasons you described, and because you didn’t win a single game via Phantasm beats (and it seems unlikely to work anyways in most matchups).
I'd probably replace them with a second set of crabs. 8 crab seems a super consistent way to ensure you get max value from the fetches and try to rush them with mill
This deck is really creative. It's so smart to transform from a self-mill deck to an opponent-mill deck. I loved watching you decide whether to mill your opponent or yourself. Great video :D
This is the most fun I've had watching this series in a while! What an amazing deck. I would love for you to play it again. And yeah, surgical seems better then jace's phantasm.
My friends have been working on a pioneer version of this deck with colossification and burning anger. They affectionately refer to it as "big angry boy"
Another good name for the deck is "Stormhearld Rope-a-dope". By far one of the best decks I've seen Seth. Did something like this with Izzet 7 Dwarves in to a Izzet Super Friends back when WotS was still around.
I left Magic a while ago, and for the most part haven't regretted it. But every now and then something like this crops up and I sincerely wish I'd stayed
I think if you're switching to the mill plan it's necessary to have surgical extractions. I love playing against Tron with mill. Extracting all copies of a Tron land is so satisfying
I feel like an aura that grants haste might not have been a terrible idea, for the corner cases where you've got to play a body AND the herald in the same turn and are worried about removal. I kind of like Prophetic Ravings as a card that does that, AND lets your crabs do their best Vryn's Prodigy impression.
Collective is playing quadruple work as early removal, lifegain vs burn, hand control and self enchantment discard. Trimming some sideboard for Surgical is better.
I don't think Surgical is very good in the main deck because we're not planning to mill the opponent in game one, we're all in on self-mill into Storm Herald. I think it's a really good sideboard card though.
@@Kydrou Yeah i thought about it a little more and realized there's not much in the mainboard you can cut, but it defnitely needs to be in the side. maybe swap our crypt incursion.
I think the maindeck plan is good enough to try and fight through the hate g2. A card like shenaningans hits most of the grave hate and can be found through the grave.
@@TheMattmatic :) I don't watch the videos for his humour, the guy is nuts in a kind of pathological way, but he is probably the best deckbuilder self editor out there. He would probably benefit from seeing a shink 3 days a week for few years. He has humour wich is great but it doesn't mix well with his condition.
I feel like the transformative sideboard was good, but disagree with the crypt incursions and jace's phantasm. If you are expecting grave hate you don't add crypt Incursion in a mill deck, and the phantasm would have been better off being maddening cacophony.
Depending on the meta 4x surgical and 4x extrapate could be fun. You wanted to have a plan, opponent? It seems weak until you realize you can start taking any non-basic lands out of their hand in a pinch.
Maybe the match ups didn't allow it to shine, but crypt incursion seems like the wrong card for that slot, and Jace's phantasm only worked once. I know this was pre tashas but if you were to build this deck before I think you'd want either more mill or counters in those 8 slots
Howw ould this work in paper? Because in between games, when you see your opponent siding out half their deck you have to know something's up. And in game 3, when you sideboard back your Storm Herald combo (or don't) the opponent's going to see as well.
Seth, based on your hatred of Tron (with the much abrew decks at least) you should build the decks to be able to answer Tron as you regularly encounter it in modern. Maybe you are holding to the spirit of the original deck though.
I don't mind Crypt Incursion. It's really good against aggro becaue of the lifegain. I'd probably cut Jace's Phantasm for some Surgicals. Jace's Phantasm didn't feel great.
I think extripate would be better. It has split second so there's a less likely chance of the opponent having answers for it. It's still instant speed too. Running both surgical and extripate is a option too.
Is there any particular reason why you're not running Colossification + Burning Anger? Deal 23 to the face seems arguably better than needing to attack.
I think that being able to annihilate with Eldrazi Conscription is pretty powerful. Even if it's not lethal being able to make our opponent sacrifice two things on turn two/three is often game ending even if our opponent is still alive.
I do like switcheroo decks, but I feel your game 2 plan has cards like Baby Jace, Unearth, Crypt Incursion, Jace's Phantasm, and Surgical Extraction (if you were to play some) that are pretty susceptible to the graveyard hate you are forcing your opponents to bring in. Generally you want to switch to a strategy that ignores the graveyards entirely, but in this case the "changeup" deck is still likely to be running ~15 cards that are not great against heavy graveyard hate.
