Hi Man. Awsome review! It's good to see that a person with real long-time guitar experience do an honest and professional review, because there are too many kids out there just promoting shit sponsored by guitars brands. Keep up the great job!
Great video and it's interesting to see how much work you're willing to put in to correct things. I know I wouldn't, I'd send it back and that's what many others would. Also, special kudos for really looking into the root of things instead of just saying "this is crap, I'll send it back".
Thanks man. After fixing the other issues, I ended up just refretting it and it plays amazing now. And I hear ya on sending it back.... think that's the smartest thing to do. 🤣
Appreciate all these little details being broken down, as I don't have any experience working on guitars myself so I wouldn't easily be able to spot these issues, which like you say are really disappointing on a guitar that expensive. I've actually thought about trying to get this model myself, whilst trying to find the perfect 7 string. All of the 7s I've had so far each have some aspects I like but also some things I'm not keen on. I don't have a 6 string with a trem currently so my first idea was to get a 7 string with a trem so I'd be able to start playing with both extended range and tremolo. My first was a Jackson Chris Broderick and whilst its Floyd felt great to use it just wouldn't stay in tune and I really didn't like being unable to change tunings quickly. That one has gone now! Next was a Cort KX507, thought I'd give a hardtail 7 string a go. The Cort is a multiscale which I'd not tried before. I actually found the higher frets where the fan angle is to the right to be really comfortable, but on the lower frets it feels awkward, especially for barre chords. Seems like you feel the same way. I still have that guitar as it was very good value, and also my first time trying Fluence pickups which are incredible. But it did get me thinking, would a 26.5" scale be the best compromise. Of course everyone is different and I'm sure many guitarists actually like the fan angle going both ways...Tosin Abasi seems to have no problems with his! The most recent guitar in my collection is an Ibanez AZ24047. Quite unique specs for a 7 string, HSS pickups and a Gotoh tremolo that doesn't have a locking nut so no problems changing tunings. And it can do most of the stuff a Floyd can, just maybe a little less extreme. But for a high-end, Japanese built 'Prestige' model I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. It just doesn't feel as tight as I'd hoped, there is a load of fret buzz including overtones on the high strings, and intonation seems off on the low B as well as that string feeling a bit dead. I know it won't have the resonance of a hardtail but still just a shame that it doesn't feel as good to play compared to my Schecter Reaper-6 that is less than half the price (with the exception being the stainless steel frets that feel smooth as butter to bend on...I definitely want stainless steel wherever possible on any future guitars!). When I saw the Dean multiscales I thought they sound like they would solve all the dislikes I've had so far. Multiscale to improve the intonation & tension but still with the lower frets being easy to use. A tremolo that can be used in full floating mode or in hardtail mode. Pickups with individual coil splits as that is a feature I like to use a lot. The only downside at a glance seems to be the lack of stainless steel frets. But after watching your video I'm beginning to see why Dean has apparently discontinued this range. There are a still a couple new in stock in the US but shipping here to the UK would be expensive and it really does sound like it wouldn't be worth it for that high price. I do hope either Dean or even better, another brand, try doing this concept again though...but doing it right. I read some stuff about Dean having some big financial troubles atm so I doubt they will be ordering a run of a very niche & complex guitars from the South Korean factory any time soon. To be fair to Dean, it seems as if some of the disappointments are with the Kahler tremolo itself. Out of interest btw, can you play the guitar OK without the locking nut when the trem is locked to hardtail? The product info says the locking nut has a string tree built in and I'm guessing that's important to have? As I'm sure you can tell, I'm not so good with the setup/tech side of guitar stuff although videos like yours are handy to learn! I do have a new 7 string coming in a few days and I'm hoping this one will finally be perfect for me. It's a Schecter KM-7 III Artist. Pretty much all the feedback I've found on this has been very positive. Interestingly, it also comes from South Korea so perhaps even from the same factory as the Dean! I wonder if the quality control comes down to how much the guitar brands are willing to pay the factory, and the standards they set in their contracts. I will still have my Ibanez AZ for the tremolo fun until I can sell it, will probably just abandon the idea of a 7 string with a trem and look to get a decent 6 string with one.
The Dean does work well as a hard tail. But their overall quality has really dropped over the years, and the asking price on this is just too high. The KM-7III is an amazing guitar. I had the USA version of it and it played extremely well. You should be really happy with it.
Thanks brother! It's unfortunate I had to do the video, but I figured people should know what Dean is shipping out as far a quality in that price range. They may not all be like this, but just the fact that mine was so poorly made is statement enough of what Dean calls a quality guitar now.
@@brutesmagootes3996 Exactly. Seems they rushed to get this newer design out too quickly. Hopefully they'll slow down and take it more seriously lol! Those flaws are inexcusable.
I completely agree. Beyond that though, I don't see the value here over a Floyd Elite 7 that is like $1,400 cheaper. Not sure how they justify the price increase. Its made from the same materials and nickel frets. 🤷🏼♂️
Thank you for the video - I grabbed one open-box for 1/3 of MSRP. We'll see what QC it has when it arrives; hoping I can fix whatever issues. I've always wanted a multi-scale 7 with tremolo but Ibanez isn't interested in making one so I took a chance on the Dean! :)
That’s an awesome deal! I have heard some have had a great experience with this guitar, so hopefully you get a good one too! 🤘🏻And I feel ya on Ibanez…idk why they seem so against making one.
Thanks for the video. I have 2 customs from Aviator and want a 3rd where I have the fret fan like this dean (I have it on the Ibanez q 7 string). I was not going to buy a Dean or this Dean guitar but it was interesting because I liked the tremolo system (in gold) because it locks and I just don't use trems at all because I don't have one... So locking it so easy means I can write stuff with a term but not have the tuning issues of a trem when I bend strings in all my other music I have already written. Seeing this guitar up close reminds me why custom can be so much better, you pick what you want and don't want and the build/finish quality is so much better, at least in my case with Aviator. Even my Ibanez Q was kind of junky even though I do like it...
Yo thank you for this review!!! You are the ONLY person who reviewed this guitar, and its a VERY good one. I ended up buying one cause of it. And after having it it NOT worth 2600 bux. But it sure was worth the 850 I payed!!! If you're gonna spend that much your better off buying the Ormsby rusty cooley model. However alot of sellers started selling this guitar at the 800-900 and at THAT price this is a STEAL!!!
I have looked at their Pendulum Elite, but I didn't pull the trigger on it because I was unsure of the quality. Kinda ironic now after getting the Dean which is almost 3 times the cost. 🤣
Now im a bit bummed about this guitar cause i just bought one at 1k. I'm surprised guitar makers have'nt figured out to pay attention to the kinds of Metals used on all parts of a Guitar. Because they all need to be FerroMagnetic and ParaMagnetic Metals only and Not DiaMagnetic! Ferro in the truss rod gets electro ionic charged by the kord, then captures vibration waves in the neck and sends them to the Magnets in the pick ups, then out of the kord to the amplifier. The ParaMagnetic Metals are activated by Ferro or Magnets, then ionically flows to the ferro or magnetic strength. DiaMagnetic Metals are activated by the ferro or magnet and ionically flows away from them, sending sound or vibration waves with them. So it matters a lot to the strength of the Electronic signal going to the amplifier how strong the amounts of vibration waves are that are going out of the kord to the Amplifier. Which also strengthens the Tone coming out of the Amplifier System.
Thank you, when this kind of care is put into all parts of a Guitar, with full attention to capturing All of The FINITE Sound Waves being generated by the Metal Strings, Timber Reverb Waves through out The Body & Neck, then All other Woods or Materials used, and also the kinds of Metals used for the Strings also. Then the strength and richness of the Multiple Tones being generated by A total Guitar, can be more than tripled from what it is now, to the Final output Effect through the Full Amplifier System, to The Air surrounding an Audiance...
@@brutesmagootes3996 .Then also when Vibrational Resonate Frequencies are put into The Air, as in Musical and Audio Performances, then The Air also Vibrates in the shape of the Vibration patterns that are being generated. These Vibration patterns can be seen and need to be seen through technical inspection techniques including, Physical, Light Waves and layers of actual Sun Light properties and Electronic Visual Cymatics devises. The wave formed in the air also provides another source of Reverb bouncing effects for 2 or 3 seconds, with other frequencies, Notes or Tones are being generated, and can be attracted & gathered by the appropriate ParaMagnetic Metal Antenna on both ends, for an additional layer of Reverb Tone being Generated by the Total Wave form output of A Guitar!! Dimebag got me into guitar...First guitar was a dean ML...never wanted to play another shape...I have lol but there is something about the ML that was so metal...yet classy. Used to buy new ML's all the time. I have owned dozens. Now I get them used and hotrod them myself Wanted the dean ml multi scale...but I'm not paying 3 grand for a Korean guitar lmfao not happening
I also dodged a bullet..... Gary Kahler seems a sincere individual with a lot of integrity but as much as he values US-built products, I think his attention to detail is wasted when companies so frequently can't install his products properly. Not only that, but there are frequent, questionable design choices. We know he can build a great tremolo, but not consistently. Thankfully Dean just won their lawsuit so perhaps these problems are a thing of the past? I'll check out your part two.
Super disappointing. Im on a journey to buy my first "expensive" guitar and this one was first on the wishlist. I just love the way it looks. To bad it's... crap. Thank you for the review
Geez that’s pretty disappointing. That’d go back if it came to me but I don’t have the patience or confidence in my setup skills to go through all that.
Thanks! And yeah, I don’t mind fixing things like that, but I shouldn’t ever have to. Dean should be ashamed of this build quality at these ridiculous price points.
The concept of these guitars are great but the execution was awful. They are also ridiculously priced. On top of that for the price they don't even have stainless steel frets
