These Were NOT Made For This, But...

- I've gotten a lot of hell about the type of guitar that I play over the past year, or so. And I decided to bring in a few guitars that pleased the "older' crowd that doesn't approve of my Metal guitar playing. Of course these guitars are some more vintage styles of guitars, and are we gonna play something other than metal on them? Hell no!

single coils mad underated for high gain. noisy sure but use a gate really helps.
I'm playing black and death metal on mainly a semihollow, a Jazzmaster and a Tele baritone. The shape of the guitar is irrelevant as long as it plays good and sound the way you want. I've come to love single coils with high gain, they bring a lot of clarity and aggression.
@@shysstasnubben it’s like playing math rock on a P90, like yeah it’s higher output and all but you can still get that math rock sound from them as they are single coils
I doom on a baritone teli all the time it's honestly really great
changing out the nut or having it cut properly will fix your tuning stability issues more than the tuners. great vid!
Another vote for nut instead of tuners.
I think a guitar with high output or active pickups would always be preferred for metal but to an extent, it doesn’t really matter, should use what’s at your disposal.
Very true to use what's at your disposal! And yeah definitely some humbucker alnico 5s or even better 7s I love for metal. This was just kinda a fun experiment to try out haha also to cringe all of the people that don't like the way I play hahaha 😅
@ The boomers and guitar snobs won’t like it but who cares. your playing is actually pretty sick, the riffs you play in your videos are pretty nasty.
A tele bridge pickup is so good for metal especially when you dial it in
Used to play an epiphone dot (335) in a Death cover band. raised a few eyesbrows. Then i used a razorback when i was temping in local pub bands. Now i just play everything on an yngwie strat with SD hotrails, and an Ibanez Jiva10 for a semitone down and a BOSS GT-01 for pitchshifting
Hey Chris, a great vid. Man, you can make anything sound metal, you get such a great tone. I think trying to play metal on a Strat is a challenge from the start, they are not metal guitars, I know Yngwie plays one but is he really metal, I mean really! Cheers dude 😎🤙
Hey Will! Always good to hear from you. Haha yeah the strat was a bit odd to me. But I can definitely see where it could work in other styles. 😄
Videos like this are always fun. Keep up the vids!
Troy Van Leeuwen had a hollow body Yamaha with p-90's and his metal tone is awesome. Mer De Noms from Perfect circle is one of my top favorite albums. Also when I was a teenager i traded a Jackson RR for a telecaster and i played mainly thrash and black metal
Single coils and p90s for sure are underrated for modern high gain tones.
Always wanted to experiment with them especially a baritone with hm2 style tones.
But I recently got an Ibanez iron label with a 5 way and a separate power tap switch which gives me the variety I was looking for. Even if it’s just in drop C#
I personally really believe single-coils have a place in metal, both traditional and modern. I think their scooped throaty sound can be very very cool and they have a LOT of definition when tuning lower. I personally love splitting coils on 7 or 8 string guitars
Cool channel, nice tone!
Thank you so much dude! 😄
dawg the comments killed me. you review metal gear of course your gonna play metal. and detuning it too low🤣
fun vid, good riffin✔️
Thank you so much! 😄
sees a metal youtuber
sees metal guitars and hears metal music
complains about it
looks in the mirror and sees a clown
Aaron Turner, when he was in ISIS, played with a Fender telecasters with p90s and whatnot, and it was FAT and LOUD. God, I miss them.
And he mostly used the neck pickup, nonetheless! Has an almost bass-like sound
Why doom sound if not doom shape?
I have that fake jazzmaster and really it can handle metal pretty well, I just usually roll the tone off a tiny bit so it doesn't scrape my ears too hard. It sounds amazing on overdriven chords and melodies, but it's still pretty solid for distorted chugs
I had an Ibanez art core. The one that looks exactly like a Gibson ES 335 and that thing had amazing metal tone!!!! I wish I still had it 😢
The semihollow has a wicked, albeit somewhat conventional tone. The strat was the winner for me - raw, Clancy brutal, it will be heard in any kind of mix. The Tele was ok, not more, not less. Don’t care for the JM, woolly and fizzy sound there. I own a Squier Offset Paranormal Telecaster with EMG X pups and it absolutely rips, without any noise. So, metal on a standard „non-metal“ guitar? Any day, IMHO
You can play WHATEVER YOU WANT on WHATEVER YOU WANT. Don't listen to those wannabee-gatekeepers. Look, I sometimes play metal on a GWL Sonamaster which is basically a cheap Washburn clone of a Stratocaster and has no humbuckers (It was my first guitar and it's what I learned on). I like it because it's light as a feather and familiar to me, so it's extremely comfortable for me to play it.
If I'm unhappy with the sound, well, I have a Line-6 Catalyst 200 modelling amp and I can make my guitar have any tone that I want it to. I can make a cheap Strat-clone sound like a Les Paul Custom if I dial all the settings in correctly.
You play what's COMFORTABLE for you because, let's face it, Les Pauls are quite heavy. Now, I do prefer to use humbuckers for metal and I do have guitars with humbuckers (Godin Solidac H-S-H, Modded Godin Session H-H-H) but it doesn't mean that I HAVE TO.
Igore what people say and play what is right for YOU. You're the one playing and that's all that matters.
1:31 definitely hit the mark on Boomer color
As a GenX'er, I'm quite fond of this color. Admittedly, it has something to do with nostalgia for the guitars the adults around me had when I was a child. So, yeah. Definitely Boomer.
Telecaster is hands down my favorite shape and style. They can chug!
I dig the classic look of them, but man for chugs I'm gonna need a humbucker in that bridge position haha 😅
Dude great video keep it up I’m a big fan
I appreciate you dude! Thank you so much for enjoying 😄
Actually Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan has a hollow body ESP (I think?) signature, so yes, hollow bodies can metal really well
Troy van lluwen from perfect circle plays metal with a hollow body and p-90
@ this further proves my point, and also I did not know that! I love APC as well
@@schizophreniagaming4058 nice! I love gathering nerdy guitar trivia 😂
@@DeffoZappo hell yeah, music nerds unite! ✊
The jazzmaster is fuckin sick, gorilla pickups makes some knarly jm sized humbuckers you could throw in, with some locking tuners that thing would chugg
I'll check that out! Thanks for the referral 😄
If it has pickups it can do Metal. Simple as that.
🔥 Another great video
Thank you Kagun! I appreciate you dude 😄
@HighImpaktAudio I appreciate you too brother.
it's not called coil tapping, it's called coil splitting. they are not interchangeable terms
how you have so much money for guitars? (hollow body wins)
Great video! The boomers will say there weren’t enough bends. That Jazzmaster is awesome been wanting to pull the trigger on one and mod it. A while ago I swapped the humbuckers in my Tele for some active emgs had to route a spot for the battery to make it work but I love the way it sounds for metal now 😅.
Hey Cal! I'll make sure to do more Boomer Bends next time 🤣
And bro check out these Harley Bentons, they're great for a project guitar.
That Tele sounds awesome! Gotta love EMGs haha
I did and some of those price points are insane! Could definitely get some cool projects going.
they'll also complain about it not being a Gibson or Fender that's so expensive you could make a down payment on a car
I literally main a strat and play metal on it lol
Tuning?
Drop A
With a strat I hate the bridge pickup but it plays metal pretty good in the neck and neck middle position though not gonna lie still one of my least favorite guitars
Any guitar can metal ive metaled on them all
if you post videos of you playing scales fastly on facebook reels, on your comment sections you will find boomers who write "you're playing too fast, that's why you're not David Gilmour".
the other demographic is younger men making jokes about those boomers "too much feel bro, you should play more scales and no bends"
in what world do guitarists see David Gilmour and say "i wanna be a guitarist like him"?
Yeah I am sure you have a lot of boomers watching your metal videos.
Clearly you can see from the 3rd comment the issue isn't the fact you're playing metal, you just aren't using enough fingers. Rather than 2 fingers, try using 3
My friend, i was definitely using 3 in this video 😆
@ then you've solved it 🤷🏻♂️ didn't need those 4 guitars, you can send them back now
Also I built a strat with a Fender roasted maple neck and a 12" radius and I'm pretty sure a charvel profile, loaded with instrumental pickups SFTY3s in it... Does that qualify for try playing it on a strat?
@scottmh96 if it's a strat style body then I say it definitely qualifies haha.
In this video i was wanting something as far out of my realm as possible so the slanted single coil seemed like the right fit. And I just wanted to troll the people that leave those comments 🤣
There is no Dana... only Zuul...
Les Paul’s aren’t for boomers jimmy page isn’t a boomer. James Hetfeild isn’t a boomer. Kirk hammet isn’t a boomer. >:( and i am not a boomer it is all just stereo type bullshit
I think they are actually boomers
@@greenxd2244 It is just stereotypical bullshit les Paul’s are great, and in any case what is wrong about being a boomer
@@bluediamondkids3403 Don't know. I love Led Zeppelin, Creedence, Black Sabbath, Hendrix and many other old bands. And I don't see anything wrong with being a boomer.
Okay boomer
Yeah, boomers are old school. they don't wear their grandma's earrings, for example.
Your grandma wears earrings like these too?! She's a cool ass lady wearing 1in plugs 🤣
You can play metal on any guitar. The concept that you can’t is limited and dopey.
I agree, it comes down to taste of the guitarist
Playing one of the only three genres a solid body can handle is metal and a semi hollow is more than just a jazz guitar and a Strat can only do three genres I like these genres by the way (a strat is only good for rock punk and metal) and a hollow body is more than just a jazz guitar
So this guy is a super strat simp and thinks everyone else is a boomer for not playing them? Pffft yeah okay. What an elitist.
We play Harley Benton LOL?? No son.burstbuckers. Duncan's fralin first no cheap ceramics no cheap wood sorry if it makes no difference to you. My tele parts caster I just built is a black limba body with 2duncan 59s. 1300 $ worth and I'm not disappointed
Just because someone has different tastes to you doesn't mean they are flawed in some way... or old. Thinking like that is extremely immature imo.
Clearly you don't understand what this video is about. I'm not saying they are flawed in any way. I actually enjoy quite a bit of different types of music, and am happy to appreciate them along side anyone. Im literally just testing out some classic style guitars to see how they do for metal. if someone wants to disrespect what I do musically well am I not able to express my feelings?
