As great as Rami Malek’s performance is, can we give props to the guy playing Ron? He perfectly plays a person who knows they’re completely fucked and is trying to desperately to stay in control
Ron tries to play into Elliott's insecurities about his Dad when he reveals his passing, as a way to build rapport. Then he tries to shed some crocodile tears. Dude is a master manipulator - Elliott is just so different that it doesn't work on him.
Not a master manipulatior. A pathetic one. He did it out of desperation because he knew he was fucked. But yes, Elliot is one of a kind. Zero empathy towards his opponents.
I still believe that if Ron didn't include that ransom money thing, he had the chance of winning the game of building rapport. But, as Elliot already called the cops, the scene had to be designed in that way.
to be fair, this probably wouldn't work on anybody unless they're incredibly stupid. Easy to see Rohit was trying to con him by instantly going down the dead dad path. Brilliant scene still

Yeah! I was 14 and the only reason I watched the first few episodes (this is when the 1st season had come out) was because the Kali Linux blog mentioned that Elliot uses it on a daily basis. Fast forward to when the last season released: I completed it and was in awe at the sheer awesomeness of the show and its filmmaking and how accurately it showed technology (they had to use software and hardware released in 2015 throughout the 4 seasons)! Now it is among my favourite shows!
@@Sakboi2012 It stays within the tor network, an exit node is never needed, the show implies that he somehow intercepted the traffic on the local coffee shop network, through one way or another as a man in the middle, but TOR is built specifically to counter that so yeah that’s “unrealistic”, the only way he could be doing what he’s saying is to get remote code execution on the box itself, which what law enforcement agencies actually do.
He is incredible to watch. His timing. I don't know how else to describe it. He hangs on little micro-moments by not speaking, not doing anything, just in the moment acting. Almost like he doesn't know what he's going to do next. He's just an incredible actor.

Both actors are incredible convincing. Idk if it’s hard or not, but can’t imagine playing a character with a mental condition, toppled with social anxiety must be pretty hard to do lmao. The actor who also played Ron is also very good. His body language does most of the talking in this scene. He’s seeing a potential end to his entire life and his looking and any angle, desperately, to try to take control or even negotiate his way out of this one.
🍷😆 Like how he shares preferences he is willing to jerk off to when he mentions about some harmless BDSM, And there fore not take offence about it. In any case he makes a point on how far the other guy has let himself push moral boundaries.
I loved this scene, then the rest of the show went a waaaaaayyyy different way. I wanted it to be a crime fighting computer guy, locking robbers in bank vaults, helping find kidnappers, rerouting drug shipments and so much more. Oh well
That's also what makes Elliot's hack more legally ambiguous, I'm not even sure if it is illegal, despite Elliot saying so. If he were identified my the police, he couldn't be charged with bribery.
He could care less about his dad's death. But he jumped on the opportunity to pretend to care in hopes that he'd be let off the hook. The actor sold it well.
I'm just surprised they made the guy a hind00 but then again making him a ju like epstein, maxwell, wexner, dershowitz, fogle, polanski, gates...would be too realistic.
Well he gave the information on how the guy looked, he's Indian bro not white. Very huge difference so if he seen a white male walk out in a hoodie why would he stop him
I like how Elliot calls him by his original name to go with his symbolic unmasking. It really solidifies with Ron that Elliot can't be bullshitted with
I did the same thing to an ID thief at my old job. Dude kept on using his stolen identity to purchase orders and call me (I work customer service) but I refused to call him that and insisted on referring to him by his real name, basically implying that I have all his real, verified info including all his work contacts (that I gathered through legally and morally questionable means, of course) and I'm not one to be BS'd with. Like Elliot with kiddy diddlers, I have a grudge for ID thieves because I was a victim of one myself.

As soon as Elliot brought up his dad, I knew the other guy was going to try to sympathize with him to try to get on his good side. Thankfully, this show is much smarter than a lot of others, and showed that Elliot already kinda expected that. :)

"It's good. So good, it scratched that part of my mind. The part that doesn't allow good to exist without condition." Such a good line. Also really hits home if you suffer from anxiety and depression.
It also hits really different when you’ve watched the whole show and realise why Elliot had that part of himself in the first place, and how it ties into what he found out about this dude when he hacked him
Having a rather pessimistic mindset towards the world doesnt automaticially mean youre depressed. It also depends on your surroundings youre living with, and the cards you were given.
Probably the best opener to a tv show, wasn't sure about it at first but after this scene it had me absolutely hooked. I also immediately related to Elliots character as the introverted loner type which isn't something you see often as a main character.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Recently saw something (think it was vice) about people seeing men in suites following them and it turns out it's the number one sign of schizophrenia.
I thought this scene is elliot being an edgy vigilante and doesn't care about money. but, after 407 this is cleary a point to a revenge against elliot's past
It's insane to think that this first scene played such a important role in the plot down the road. It seems to disconnected until you really find out more about elliots past and everything comes together. Sam Esmail is truly a genius writer
The series could have been better. I quit watching when it started showing his delusions, and it made the entire show seem like a big day dream and not real. If they had just stuck with hacking in general and not done the mind games I would have stayed watching it.
I like the look on Ron's face, when Rami told him about his father. The look actually indicates that he might get through to Rami, and make him forgive him, or at least make the situation negotiable.
It's incredibly-subtle acting, but so damn effective. He sees a potenti angle to exploit to try and negotiate his way out, so tries to appeal to Elliot, make himself seem more human and understanding.
This is one of the best beginnings to a show ever. And, what we all missed, is that the beginning of this show his character pretty much gives away the twist almost immediately. Such a brilliantly written TV show and clearly the part that catapulted this young man into stardom.
The Mastermind wanted to confront Rohit in person, not to work on his social skills, but because subconsciously he's aware of the sexual abuse Elliot endured as a child, so was compelled to seek out the satisfaction of looking his surrogate abuser in the eye as he delivered justice without yet understanding why. It's great when a talented show-runner knows exactly the story he wants to tell from the very start.
The show also ended when it should. It did not continue forever. All good things must end before they make the mistake of prolonging it to much to make more money.
@@vidal9747 Actually I think they had a 5 season plan that got trimmed to 4. I may be wrong, but Elliot uses a lot of exposition about the Deus Group at the start of S4 instead of pealing the layers of the stories like they did in previous seasons.

@@mryellow6918 it still does protect you very well, or atleast as long as you're not against some heavily/goverment funded adversary, tor itself uses 3 layered encryption which starts at your browser and ends at either exit node or at the webserver itself if it's a dedicated onion webserver, and even when it ends at the exit node your connection is still encrypted by TLS/SSH basically HTT/PS. The way Elliot compromised the server in this video is pretty simple, he didn't really exploit the onion routing at all. In a dedicated onion server the server is actually the exit node or the last node. The server itself was directly connected to the lan in the cafe(basically being hosted there), and everyone on the cafe's wifi was on the same connection as the server. All Elliot did was to find out that a server existed on the network (most probably due to the high bandwidth usage) and then he was able to compromise it by probably exploiting one of the plethora of pre-existing server vulnerabilities. And, looking at the existing ( or atleast known ) attack vectors of the Onion Routing framework there exists only a few. The more known one being "Exit Node MITM Attack", which could be easily avoided by using HTT/PS based websites as your traffic would be encrypted by PMS even after leaving the exit node, and SSL downgrades are blocked by most browsers, and while there exists "SSL certificate attacks", they could only be carried by someone who has access to be able to create a Certificate from a trusted certificate authority, again that being possibly only possible for the government. And the other one being controlling the Entry and exit nodes(and if possible the node in between too as while it's technically possible to correlate metadata between entry and exit nodes, it's a tedious and could not work sometimes if the traffic is high on the nodes.), But then again for that you basically need to operate a large number of onion routing nodes, which basically translates to high financial ability, which is only possible for very heavily funded organizations. Such as government.

coming back to this scene after the series finale blows my mind at how truly planned out the whole show was. rarely do we get to experience a story fully and exactly as the creator intended and that's what makes mr. robot so special

yeah he's so desperate to cling onto something that will spare him of getting what's coming to him. The whole time he's dumbfounded, wondering who tf is this kid and how does he know so much life-ruining info about him, and as predictable as it sounds, the second Elliot mentions something that makes him seem vulnerable, he visibly goes "eureka, this is what I will cling onto" and tries to seem empathetic, "i feel your pain, we're both human, see these tears? please don't utterly ruin my life" and then he starts crying, as a silent way to beg without actually saying it, but Elliot doesn't react with empathy, so he jumps to the next conclusion: blackmail - so he gathers whatever little courage he has left to pull the macho act, in a really pitiful attempt to show Elliot he has the upper hand... obviously this is completely worthless because Elliot isn't doing this neither to find an ally, to blackmail or for a reward... what's most impressive about his scene is that it's literally the first episode but you're already getting a massive foreshadow of what's to come, and the actual subconscious motive that brought elliot to take Ron down

I'm struck by how very bold it was -it tells an entire story arc (and very well) in 5 minutes, gives a large amount of main-character setup, thoroughly messes with audience expectations, and has a high intensity to it as well. It's incredibly dense in retrospect. I think the rest of the series more than lived up to it. Just incredible work.

This scene is even more powerful once you’ve watched the show all the way through. Oddly enough, this scene has more foreshadowing than any other scene in season 1.
I really hope more and more people will discover this show, I'll admit the long stretches between seasons did make certain things hard to follow at times. And I would usually rewatch every season right before the next one came out. Now that you can just watch one episode a day or binge it in a week, you will probably be able to catch things more easily. I will say it was a smart choice to have the first episode be filmed in an almost David Fincher kind of way before they created their own language with the camera to tell this story. The pilot is so good that it will hook you in and you will likely not notice that things have changed until you are about halfway through the season, and even then you believe that part of it is because they are trying to show with the camera how the drugs are affecting Elliot's mind. So when you get to season 2 you are just used to that this is the look of the show. A friend of mine recently started to watch and I can't wait for her to get to the silent episode, how that episode has not been deconstructed as a masterclass in show don't tell by video essayists is beyond me.
Probably because Buffy the vampire slayer did the same thing, "Hush" in season 3. I think it won an Emmy for it and was such a watershed moment in TV so no doubt that they took the idea. What's striking is that Elliot comes off like this total weirdo with these alien mannerisms and terrifying stare in his eyes, and yet his actions are utterly heroic. It's a great way of introducing him as this bizarre yet deeply sympathetic character to spend the rest of the show with.

Nah, I think it flew under the radar more than going over people's heads. I recall in Australia, it was on a streaming service which was absolutely terrible in both quality of service and steaming selection (I don't recall what it was called, but I really wasn't surprised to hear that it didn't last long), and then I don't have a clue where Mr. Robot ended up after that. I've only seen the first two season because of that. But yes, it was a great show, but it never really scored mainstream popularity, and I think that may have been to do with availability.

True, people think that anonymous mode or TOR will protect you but oh boyy they would be surprised.
@@ExtremeMan10 tbf it used to
@@mryellow6918 it still does protect you very well, or atleast as long as you're not against some heavily/goverment funded adversary, tor itself uses 3 layered encryption which starts at your browser and ends at either exit node or at the webserver itself if it's a dedicated onion webserver, and even when it ends at the exit node your connection is still encrypted by TLS/SSH basically HTT/PS.
@@ExtremeMan10 Never knew that anonymous mode was to protect, it was simply made to keep stuff away from your history, cache, temporary directory, autocomplete, keeping stuff separate from plugins and possibly to enforce a few policies like disabling screen capture and restrict memory access to other processes. Other than that it doesn't do much. Also tor is still secure as long as you're either not dumb enough to frick your Opsec or are being targeted by some NSA level organization.
@@wrockd What I mean by it is that what you view in Anonymous mode is still visible to your operator or internet provider, so it wont protect you. I dont judge people on what they relief themselves on, as long as its fiction Im not judging but if it was, lets say "real" and rest I dont think I need to write then police would be on you in that very instant.
Only time I use anon mode is when using source code without cookies saving on my main browser but yea you are right, when you mess up one small thing on tor and you are done.

yeah he's so desperate to cling onto something that will spare him of getting what's coming to him. The whole time he's dumbfounded, wondering who tf is this kid and how does he know so much life-ruining info about him, and as predictable as it sounds, the second Elliot mentions something that makes him seem vulnerable, he visibly goes "eureka, this is what I will cling onto" and tries to seem empathetic, "i feel your pain, we're both human, see these tears? please don't utterly ruin my life"
and then he starts crying, as a silent way to beg without actually saying it, but Elliot doesn't react with empathy, so he jumps to the next conclusion: blackmail - so he gathers whatever little courage he has left to pull the macho act, in a really pitiful attempt to show Elliot he has the upper hand... obviously this is completely worthless because Elliot isn't doing this neither to find an ally, to blackmail or for a reward... what's most impressive about his scene is that it's literally the first episode but you're already getting a massive foreshadow of what's to come, and the actual subconscious motive that brought elliot to take Ron down
We needed a season 5, but I'm not complaining. Mr. Robot turned Rami Malek into a leading man and ended up being one of the best TV shows of all time.
We don't. The series ended amazingly.
13/1/22: I agree w Malek being a leading actor and Mr Robot being amazing, but everything else is a no
Nah Until Dawn turned him into a leading guy - - guy outshined everyone’s performance in that game.
@@firstlast9846 right? I remember playing Until Dawn when it came out and after finishing it I went to the iMDb page and had to look up what my boy had done up until then. I saw that Mr. Robot had aired two episodes or something and this amazing journey started there :')
I came here from "Mamaaa"
@@firstlast9846 Psh, it's all about Night at the Museum. What's an "Until Dawn" or a "Mr. Robot" to "Night at the Museum 1-3?" Lol.
This opening scene was as good as I remember, having watched the entire series.
Brilliant scene the spark in his eyes when Ron says it's his personal life is genius. Almost indecipherable but some disgust escapes.
Bro I just fucking served Rami a beer in my local pub SUPER unexpectedly and had a full blown conversation with him like a normal human being. Guy is a great character and was so chilled and wanted to relax from a long day no doubt. Best moment of my life by far.
I love that Mr Robot is actually accurate about the hack techniques
I don't think I've ever seen such a well-written show as this one, ever.
breaking bad

Which is fine, people do that all the time in art but just saying but Buffy was very influential. Don't particularly care for it now that I'm older but still.
@@jazzercise300 He was very open that he stole from pretty much everyone. He followed the old saying "steal from everyone and it's called research, steal from one and you are just a thief." Don't remember that episode of Buffy but it's been over a decade since I saw it. I was just very impressed by the fact that I did not notice that the episode was silent until there was actual dialog by the end.
A coworker showed me this episode during our lunch break. This intro hooked me to this show so much that I wanted to go home and binge watch it.
The soundtrack is amazing for this. Its reflective of the mood and pacing of the cut and you feel it too.
This was the clip that really got me into watching Mr. Robot. I just finished watching and I cannot describe how awesome it was. 10/10
When you rewatch this scene, you can understand the last season about elliot ... it was a big spoiler at first, but we passed it and enjoy it.
Mr. Robot is the best piece of art I've ever seen! I'm in love with this masterpiece, man.
This is one of the best opening scenes to any show I've seen. I remember the first time I saw it, the pilot was airing on TV that day and I had no clue what show it was, but I watched this scene and immediately knew it would be amazing. What's striking is that Elliot comes off like this total weirdo with these alien mannerisms and terrifying stare in his eyes, and yet his actions are utterly heroic. It's a great way of introducing him as this bizarre yet deeply sympathetic character to spend the rest of the show with.
Had Raimi opened his eyes a little wider, I feared that they would just pop out.
He is an Arab Christian, they are persecuted in Arabia
Still fucks me up how good this opening is
It's the BEST
I actually found Christian Slaters side of the plot pretty boring. I could watch Elliot all day.
this is the greatest show ever created to me.... the ending was one of the most beautiful thought provoking tragic concepts I've ever been apart of... truly... this show and every actor and actress is beyond amazing
"it's so good it scratched that part of my mind part that doesn't allow good to exist without condition" what a line
Finish the show to find out what that itch is
I like the catatonic tone that elliot speaks in. Its almost like he's a computer himself trying to process human emotions.
"it scratched that part of my mind, part that doesn’t allow good to exist without a condition",
after the final episode almost everything what Elliot says can be treated either as a foreshadowing, or as an important part of his character development
"It's not about the money, it's about sending a message"
This is one of the best shows ever made and people rarely talk about it. I think it went over a lot of people’s heads, sadly.
