Great video! I remember as a kid, back in the late '60's and early '70's my aunt had a suds saver washing machine made by Montgomery Wards. It fascinated me, as most washers did, to watch. I love the sound of the mechanical timers on Maytags.
Thanks for posting the video's on here!
The old Maytag's were sturdy, dependable and washed great! However, i did find them ugly until I saw this beauty! its a true treasure! Love the aqua marine color! Good show!
I've never heard anyone say these machines were ugly. I thought they were some of the most handsome washers ever made. Quality written all over them.
Whirlpool made a model similar in design in the mid 50s before the iconic Maytag design we all know now. Wish they would have stuck with that design.
Maytag made the best transmission in the business. The soft whirring sound it makes is music compared to other washer brands.
Yes, in 1966 washers was before the interlock mechanism on the lid. If the lid was raised in later washers, this would turn the washer off. Back in the 1950's and early 1960's there was no lid interlock. Fascinating!
Actually as far back as the 50"s Maytag had a switch that would stop agitation .
I really love this washer, very nice.A 1966 the year I was born!
Beautiful machine! Looks like you have a pair there! My relative in PA has this very model in white and still uses it on a weekly basis! I have always admired Maytags and sudsavers in particular; they still fascinate me! Thanks for sharing this with others!
Absolutely beautiful machine, I love the color!
I agree very nice washer, the year I was born 1966.
What a beautiful old washer!
I have one in brown, they don't build them like this anymore.
I think the last Maytag suds saver made was around 2002-03 it was like a LAT series then when they came out with the Neptune front loader they were no more.
Where does one find a new in the box Appliance from that era? I would love to keep my eyes out for one, despite it being a rarity. I just wouldn't even know where to look.
My dream washer and dryer. ❤️
What a rare find!
Gorgeous machine.
Man, that agitator style has lasted, from plastic and metal to all plastic. The drop in softener cup and the holes straight down the side.
When Maytag was Maytag back in the day they use to build top notch laundry products they where some most reliable washers & dryers ! Money can buy . Very durable fewer repairs ect . There top load washers used the power fin agitators & the lint filter was right in the center . . That’s what those slots where on the agitators. What really hurt Maytag was that Neptune front load washer . They where a nice looking machine but plagued with reliability issues & class action lawsuits . At the time they where pricey. Had been the other around they would have still been in business . If these washers they built didn’t have reliability issues . There home office was in Newton Iowa . In 2006 Whirlpool bought them out .
The channel owner explained that you save the WASH water, not the rinse water. This was a common practice back in the day, where most things were considered wasteful. My grandma had a completely manual washing machine, and she used to "fish" the clean clothes from the sudsy water, and then she proceeded to do another load. Sometimes she rinsed the clothes in a bucket and sometimes she queued several washed loads talking turns to rinse them in the machine.
That’s a real Maytag ! It’s a shame they are now owed By Whripool . They bought Maytag back in 2006 .
Suds return was common on 60s/70s washers, usually the deluxe model in most manufacturers lines had suds return.
What is it used for exactly?
it was a feature that put the rinse water in a utility tub that can be used for the next load of laundry. when you set the dial to 'suds return' it sucks the rinse water back in to the machine. there are 2 drain hoses on the back of the machine for this, one specifically for the suds return and the other is the regular drain. if you used this feature, this potentially makes these machines more efficient than modern HE washers sold today!
~ GarageDoorGuy, you are MOSTLY correct. But it's NOT the rinse water that is "returned" to the washer, it's the WASH water, hence "suds return".
The idea is to wash lightly soiled items in hot water, the save the "sudsy" water in the utility sink and rinse water is sent down the drain. Then the warm "sudsy" water is returned to the washer for the next load of laundry. It's topped off with hot water and a just little more detergent.
If one needed to run a full load, was there an option to supplement the retrieved suds with fresh water from the tap? Also, could the saved suds be saved for a third use, or further?
Finally, why don't they do this any more?
Wow
If you're filling in this manner, how do you heat the water? Does the machine have an integral heater?
Richard Harrold
No. None of our top loaders in the states had heaters in them . They got the hot water from the home water heater .
No it does not. No American top load washing machine had any type of heater.
Any chance you might have the manuals, would really like a copy of them, we purchased a house three years ago and it had a maytag washer and dryer looking exactly like the one in your video. I tried the suds saver, and it seems to work fine, but once the washer fills it stays on the return suds cycle and doesn't advance to the timed ten min delicate cycle, it just stays stuck at the return suds cycle? Are you to manually advance it?
No I don't have any manuals, sorry. Try searching this site:
www.automatice.org/cgi-bin/index.cgi?showdoc~1317~~
Why can't they do this with other washers.
Did this model have Perm Press or Wash and Wear?
I know some washers had this option, but saving the dirty wash water to use with subsequent loads just never seemed like a great idea to me.
With its higher selling price, and also the need for a specially equipped sink to contain the dirty suds, I'm guessing nobody wanted to buy this washer when it was new.
Elmer Cat you used the previous loads RINSE water not WASH water
We used it. The house houses we lived in the 60's and 70's had washtub sinks.
Actually, These machines sold pretty good, They really came in handy for someone who got their work clothes really dirty, you could save money by reusing the water for a prewash,it reused wash water, hence the term suds saver.
Lots of folks bought them and lots of folks had big sinks next to their washer.
