Solid review, I gotta grab this one, this was a part of my childhood as well I saw this film sooo many times
I just got my copy in a few days ago so I'm excited to revisit it, it's probably been since the 90's since I've seen it.
Got this in and gave it a 1st time watch last week. Great, fun film! If you do get Ladybugs, it may surprise you with the humor, Ken~definitely not PC for the current times, lol!
You've had SLC Punk for 2 months now and you're watching Sidekicks while SLC Punk just sits waiting to be watched. 😞
I just watched that last week. Pretty good. I will rewatch it sometime.
Originally Aaron Norris was Chuck’s stunt double. If you watch Good Guys Wear Black there is a stunt that Chuck jumps up in the air and does a flying kick into the front windshield of a car n that stunt was done by Aaron. He is very talented and a very good martial artist.
Thank you for this review :-) I was on the look-out for this film to get an official BluRay-release, for the past 15 years, lol! Heck, I’d even take a standard DVD, back in the days! :-) Just wanted to let you know (in case you didn’t) that SIDEKICKS was actually already released on BluRay, from a German company, back in summer of last year, and that’s when my personal wait-time finally ended (Below I’ve linked to a youtuber, showing off that exact edition) This was truthfully the first time, that this movie was ever sincerely restored in full HD - AND, for the first time also in WideScreen :-) I bought this edition, and the simple standard 1080P restoration looks BEAUTIFUL! Truly crisp and clean, with no grain to mess it up. The colors on this edition looks fresh and there’s no obvious sign of looking “washed out” (quite the contrary)
HONESTLY, and this is just a thought: I THINK the edition you have might only be a further UPscaled render, made from the official 1080P BluRay-version? Maybe the 1080P version just doesn’t benefit from that 4K upscaling, in the end? Again, just a thought. But I honestly think the “4K” logo here might be a bit of a gimmick, and that could be why it only looks half-way-decent? It’s certainly not to pooh-pooh on your set, cause the packaging looks AWESOME! :-) And I’m actually a little bit jealous of that, hehe. However, the 2022 BluRay-release is no slouch it self in that regard, that I can tell ‘ya :-) It’s also a high-class looking digibook, and I’m truthfully in_LOVE with its 30’th Anniversary Limited Edition Cover-art! Not to say yours ain’t cool, cause it absolutely is! :-) Anyway, you might wanna tjeck out the link below, and you can see the edition I bought. Again, the 1080P transfer looks GREAT here; even on my 83” Sony OLED tv ;-) The only hiccup is that it’s German writing on the back, and inside of the booklet too (but at least it still has the original newly mastered english audio, and subs as well)

All i know is, im cautiously optimistic about the original Rocky 4K remaster. There are some really, really rough looking scenes on the bluray. Hoping they can find better elements to restore.

Might have my son watch it with me. I saw this when I was young but barely remember it, I was definitely more of a Karate Kid fan… Can’t wait to revisit this though!
One of my all time favorites growing up. I was pumped when I saw it was finally getting a release outside of VHS and to be 4k, that blew me away. Loved hearing Aaron talk about Chuck's real first name and the stories they have putting this movie together. Great release. I was blown away by the case itself!

I'm similar in age to you and can say Sidekicks and Expendables 2 are the only Chuck Norris movies I saw open in a theater.
I think the picture was great looking but no 5.1 at least surround sound was a disappointment 😥 nice review it's good to see other reviews on this!
Definitely agree on the transfer. They came out with so many 4k bangers lately. TCM2, Freeway, Amityville Horror the best looking VS 4ks in my opinion.

I watched my copy and it took me back to my childhood loved it. VS has been knocking it out of the park with their transfers. Hopefully they will get more bigger titles in the future cause they have been killing it and Shout Factory has been dropping the ball with their 4K releases by only doing theatrical cuts!
I just wonder what their film transfers are gonna look like going forward since Vinegar Syndrome upgraded their film scanner (ARRISCAN XT)?
Roadhouse 4k one of the greatest 4k transfers I ever seen. I don't get why some look great and not so great.
I have noticed that the only title Vinegar Syndrome used Dolby Vision was Tammy and the T Rex. Any reason why they don't utilize it more ? I think all the VSU titles should of had it supported and benefit from it other than perhaps Beastmaster.

SideKicks is available on Amazon Prime to watch before you buy but trust me it’s a great movie
Not all movies are shot equally well. It wasnt meant to be a huge blockbuster. Maybe they cut corners in some scenes? Maybe they polished it the best they could. Maybe not who knows.
I honestly don't see the excitement of this movie even as a kid I hated it thought it was super cheesy but my older brother loves it idk enjoy it I guess
Been trying to get into vinegar syndrome by watching their movies on Tubi but most have been total trash. Which is really unfortunate

I had no idea, until right now (IMDB’ing), that Jonathan Brandis died in 2003! I thought he just moved on with his life and left acting 🤯. Tragic depression story.
Very depressing for sure.
I've always preferred Sidekicks to Karate Kid. It's a lot more fun, and Brandis plays an infinitely more likable character than Macchio.
It's also a great one for Airbender fans that want to see Mako doing live action Uncle Iroh. The tortoise scene in particular.

This being only a good transfer was bound to happen sooner or later after a series of spectacular releases. Sometimes the source material just isn't that up to snuff. I take a good or even an above average 4K transfer over not having it at all. xD
I would buy more Vinegar Syndrome if they had better movies.
Hi, can you tell me about special features. Were all these interviews recorded a long time ago and only published in this edition? Or are these completely new contemporary interviews? I would prefer it to be things recorded straight from the 90s, but what is more important is if they contain many interesting facts about the film. If I were to decide to buy this edition, it would be because of the wealth of new curiosities and information.
Do the commentary and special features have English subtitles?
It was a mix of both new and old.
the head guy at the transfer team at vinegar syndrome told me its a lame title and because of that they didnt put 100% into the restoration...lol im kidding. It could be just the source material they had to work with, not sure.
I’m sure it was. Vinegar never really misses, so I’m not blaming them. Just a little lackluster in parts.

Sidekicks is easily the worst movie ever made.
Cool video but you paid way to much for sidekicks on 4k I remember seeing sidekicks in theaters when it came out in 1992 and just thinking sidekicks was just ok and sidekicks never got a DVD release just a VHS release bc I worked at media play witch was a major video store company from 1997 until 2006 when the company went out of business and when I worked there people would ask if we carried sidekicks on DVD or if we can order it for them and we always tell them not available on DVD just VHS at a higher price so sidekicks was not on DVD and it is cool that sidekicks has finally gotten more then a VHS release but vinegar syndrome release of sidekicks is way over price and keep the videos coming
