Vinegar Syndrome has always done a great service to film presentation. The key to enjoying some their schlockier titles is digging into those special features. The Lost Picture set is a great example. No, on the whole the movies aren't "great". But they are important for film history. They say a lot about a moment in time. In a lot of ways, you get a more true snapshot of culture at a given time through some of these outsider pictures, more so than you would through some more mainstream films. If it's not for you, then so be it. There are plenty of labels that release all the mainstream hits ad nauseum.
I paid for a VS subscription for the first time this year. So far I think its a good investment. I havent liked 2 of the subscription movies I got so I just sold them on eBay.
As someone who use to buy from VS just for the more sleazy or low budget horror/sci-fi titles, I like that they’re more diverse in their catalog now. I just hope they keep a good balance
Great synopsis on these my friend - as a big VS fan I’m happy for their direction. I’m all for them staying true to who they are, but to me taken more seriously they needed to do this. And I’m all for it. I think we’re in for a great run with them.
I am new to Vinegar, found them last fall and started buying a lot of films I no nothing about, especially partner labels. In six months, I have expanded my movie horizon, I have found absolut gems and I have become a bit of a packaging snob. I don't like the low-budget horror, but I'm glad that it is there for those who wants it, don't want to change that. I recently saw Hot Snake/Guns and Guts double feature westerns - wow. I love Criterion but VS is now my second go-to label, it has been an amazing ride so far - Deaf Crocodile, Altered innocence and all the other amazing labels. And of course VS themselves. The Beastmaster release from them is my favourite release so far - the movie, the extras, the packaging. Just wow.

I got Red Rock West and Little Darlings and those were my very first purchases from Vinegar Syndrome. Very interested in the Cinematographe line they are doing. Don't plan to get every single one but will definitely get the ones of interest.
I'm very behind on buying their movies but I will be buying Navy Seals and China O'Brian. I love getting discover movies from them I wouldn't see otherwise. Since Vinegar Syndrome has begun releasing Paramount movies I would love for VS to release From Dusk Til Dawn on 4k.
There’s plenty of companies that focus on traditional “good” movies, but VS is preserving films that would otherwise, mostly likely be lost in obscurity, and I love them for that.
A quality forgotten gem "Ghost" Patrick Swayze. Some underrated cult cheezy 80s gems "Amazons, Barbarian Queen, Barbarian Brothers, Lady Hawk". Fantasy adventure titles like amazing job they did with "Beast Master" release last year.
Alright Ken, you can quit twisting my arm. I've ordered the Cinematography titles from VS. You happy now? If any VS reps are listening give this man his commission.
The #1 Best VS title i purchased was Show Girls 🎉.... amazing art cover and quality boxset. I played it one night to friends and they were very impressed 😂. in 2024 I got Southern Comfort and again great job on film quality.
I was a sub last year in 2023 and loved it but very happy I didn’t re run this year because I’m just not interested in that many releases so far in 2024. So far picked up darlings, dr Hitchcock, southern comfort and pre ordered Dangerous game
I'm planning on getting Southern comfort and Little darlings. But I'm going to wait for a sale. Or if their close to selling out. I actually saw both of them at the theater. Back in the 80s. But yeah I've had my feel of their usual sloth. I'm all about them doing good films. And like you said. That doesn't mean big studio mainstream stuff.
I own two Vinegar Syndrome titles. Ticks and Cloak & Dagger. I think the packaging is top notch and their transfers are good. However the movies they offer for the most part are less than stellar. Personally I think they're overrated. As far as boutique labels go for me they're near the bottom. Boutique Labels top five 1.Arrow 2.Second Sight 3.Kino Lorber 4.Scream Factory/Shout Factory 5. Criterion.

Like some of the VSUs such as Sidekicks and the Cinematographe line aren't for me but China O'Brien is so it's always a mixed bag
I would Buy Phase 4 4K in instant but for that the extras are blu ray region A, hopefully one of the UK companies will release it in 4K. Five Card Stud is brilliant, look forward to its release (Roddy McDowell, etc). Little darlings, interesting but again, a region A blu-ray ...

It’s funny that anybody would consider Vinegar Syndrome going mainstream or abandoning their roots. Red Rock West and Southern Comfort aren’t well known. These are still niche titles folks!
You are correct about Vinegar doing a lot of bad bad films. So better quality is great. Maybe they can pick up the slack and put out films that can't get even a blu ray release like, What About Bob and Searching For Bobby Fischer.
Slightly off topic here but it seems like Half Price Books has adjusted some of their prices, at least my local one has. I just picked up the Expendables 1-3 on 4k brand new for $14.99 and Despicable Me 3 4k for $5.99. They seem to have realized the secondary market on 4ks has come down a bit. They still charge quite a bit for steelbooks that are out of print though but that's understandable
I still don't own a single Vinegar title. They just charge too much for the quality of titles they release. The only thing they've released I really wanted was eXistenZ, but by the time I was in a position to order it it was always sold out. I have a hard time paying $35 for a release that doesn't even have a slipcover, which is all you can get now. Phase IV is kind of tempting but again, $45 for a single film is a hard sell for me. I put up with enough of that in the laserdisc days. 😂
@@fritzthecat8158 Oh, I understand why they and most of the boutique labels charge what they do. These titles aren't exactly going to be selling Marvel movie numbers.
