Tadeusz Kościuszko is a pretty big polish historical figure. He fought as a general in American Revolutionary War in 18th century, that's why he is celebrated in a lot of US cities. Then, he came back to Poland where he started the Kościuszko's uprising after first and second partition of Poland (by Russia, Austria and Prussia). And yes there is a Kościuszko mountain in Australia - because of first polish hiker that reached a top of that mountain, and wanted to honor Kościuszko, although he's never been to Australia.
