Magnus Walker’s 1980 Porsche 924 Carrera GT: The Unloved Outlaw
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 тра 2018
- Magnus Walker is more than just a well-known figure in the air-cooled Porsche world, but it would be wrong to assume that’s all he’s interested in. So rather than joining him for yet another jaunt in a naturally aspirated rear-engined machine, this week we’re focusing on a 1980 924 Carrera GT. One of just 406 produced, Magnus has added his own stylistic touches to this box-flared beast, which he describes as a unique but similar driving experience when compared to the 911 platform. It still lives up to the badge on the hood though, and he explains the challenges and rewards therein as we take to the elevated Angeles Crest Highway above the city.

As the owner of a 914-6 in Irish green, That is held together with some duct tape. Magnus was the first guy to say to me. "I love the duct tape " and meant it. Such a personable man.
Go Magnus Go. Big fan.
Was he humoring you?
And at the end of the day... Drive what you enjoy ;) Fast or slow, old or new, on or of road, as long as you have a good time!
Bram Collier I wish more people would agree with you and me.
Tomi Vuori
I agree with you guys. I love the 924 own an 87S and a rare 88S Special Edition. Both unique in their own way. Not as fast as my 911 but I drive and enjoy them for what they are and how they make me feel. Bottom line, if it's a Honda a 350Z or VW bug, drive, own and enjoy what you love.
I do too !
1988 Pontiac FieroGT 5 speed, a car also despised by the uninformed. 30 years now of fun driving. MY car, nothing else.
Well said
Amen to that
The cinematography on these videos is always stunning. It fuels my passion for cars in ways nothing else does and even has me falling for vehicles I never looked twice at.
Wow, things have changed! Magnus has changed. The first time I learned about him, many years ago, he would touch only air-cooled 911s. It’s cool to me that he has grown to appreciate all real Porches (sports cars).
Welp, that's it. Hope everyone enjoyed the days of cheap transaxle Porsches!
Patrick Szczypinski yup. 😁😁
That's why you should always have a 951
nutsackmania totally. Got into the 951 game two years ago. Just in time!
Cheap for a reason, you Euro Cult Worshipping ZOMBIE!!!!
I sold my 944 for £4.5k... huge mistake
"Whether you speak English, German, Japanese or Australian."
... Australian.... Magnus, they speak English
James Shives crikey
+James
Magnus has a point. Strine is almost like a different language.
James Shives struth
Maybe he means the Aboriginals' indigenous language(s)? ;)
James Shives - Well not the REAL and ORIGINAL Australians.
after watching this i realize i'm not doing enough in my life to enjoy what i love
I had an '87 924S. For me the 924S is where it's at. You get the narrow 924 body but the Porsche 2.5L. Early 924 turbo's are pretty cool, too.
The. Amish.Sasquatch there was a company in torrance that specialized in mods on the 2 liter engine punching them out to 2.5..euro spec pistions and enlarged valves....and carbareator set up also as well as turbo mods
Thanks Magnus and Petrolicious! After having driven a lot of different 911's from all era's, I recently had the opportunity to drive a 928gts. I had driven a 944 years ago, but that car was in bad shape and the situation didn't dictate a proper "hooning." So I considered the 928 to be my first true front engine Porsche experience. I was blown away. Even with the automatic transmission that car was much more responsive and handled way better than I thought it would. I seriously underestimated that car's abilities. I now plan on adding a proper front engine Porsche to my garage as soon as I can. If you love Porsche's and haven't driven a 928, 944, 965, etc, I highly recommend you do, in any of it's variants. Thanks again Petrolicious! Cheers Magnus, thanks lad!
Now the 924 will get pricey
it already is. i once skipped very nice 924's for €1000. Now they start at 3k and look horrid. And the GT is only found in museums. Very rare.
i thought the same damn thing it will jack up those unloved 944s too
Bought a 78’ 924 for $2,000 and it was in fairly nice condition. When I get the time I’ll work on restoring it or converting it for AutoCross which I drove it in a couple times.
Still don't want one. Could be £100,000
Could've bought a '85 911 targa back in '92 @15k, boy I missed the boat on that one
ive been a vintage porsche mechanic for years. i always get excited when i get to work on 924's. love the old audi based 2.0 cars! reliable, fuel efficient and fun as hell on the twisty roads around me. glad i got mine before they get too expensive for a mechanic to own!
Ich habe ein 911 und ein 924 ich fahre lieber den 924 ,der hat einfache eine bessere Straßen Lage und sieht finde ich besser aus ,und nicht so langweilig aus vom Design. 😊LG.
Good luck getting the 959!
Petrolicious + Magnus Walker = bonheur l'équation est simple non :)
Dont know what that last means but Im pretty sure i could not agree more!
Round_Lake petrolicious + magnus walker = happiness the calcul is simple no

That’s me when I’m cycling
BURN.........IN........HELL.........
I just got my new glasses and am seeing everything crisp and I'm blessed with a new petrolicious video :D
This dude found the secret to owning your dream cars, just don’t pay for a water bill.
The coolest 924 i've ever seen
Always a pleasure to watch these episodes, this one is even better because it features a Porsche and Magnus :D
I could not have asked for a better B-day gift. Thank you.
Its crazy that you can make so much top quality content, are spechless after every video you give us.
All the love to you
Exquisite video, Magnus is a great host for his videos.. I remember when he got this car, it was one of the few P cars i had never heard off.. That massive rear window, offset hood intake, and wide body are so unique and cool. Hope theres a video of his twin plug 964 on the way, that car is a masterpiece.
My first Porsche experience was riding in my pops’ maroon 924 he picked up after retiring from the US Navy!
This is Awesome. Love those seats and as always the chunky width of any of Magnus's machines.
I have a belief that to get into classic cars you need to love it, and Magnus loves it. Unfortunately so many people are into the old Porsches for investment purposes.
I am driving 30 years and through hard work and long hours I have owned a lot of nice cars, not super valuable but good cars. 90% have been German and RWD, currently a have a couple of Porsches (993/924s) and a daily diesel Mercedes!
If u are into them for the right reasons doesn’t matter about values:)
Always a classy production and another great story by a Porsche Icon.... bravo Petro.
Got me a 924/931. I'm glad more info is coming out on these cars, they are picking up value
Finally drove ACH a month ago while on vacation. What a road! Different to what we have in Switzerland but it has a lot to offer!
This guy is living life to its fullest!
Love your work. Keep it up. 👍🏼
Can confirm what he said about Angeles Crest Highway. That was my favorite motorcycling road. Absolutely world class.
Magnus + Petrolicious = Awesome!
Met Magnus a few years back now, top guy. I own a couple of 924 turbos and i have to say out of all the Porsche I have owned (356, 911,912,914,944,928, Cayenne) and driven it is my current favourite. There has alway been something about a turbo charged Porsche that was special and I dont believe the 924 turbo is any different. Currently they are still affordable (UK Prices hitting £15K for a good road car) they are still out there but they were produced in such small numbers they are quite the rarity. Cheers Woolie
Nice one Marcus, and Petrolicious. I can never watch just one Petro' vid' always turns into a mini box set session!
Happy with my 1984 944. It’s been a great car!
Mr. Walker + a 924 this is REALLY a special one :) Great Idea! Greetings from Austria
Would love another Porsche in a 924 or 944. So underrated!
Love it. I bought a 924 turbo "S" a few years ago when I turned 18 first Porsche and I wouldnt trade it for anything
I had a 78 924 back in 82 and loved it. I quickly blew the stock engine and had Scottsdale Porsche rebuild it with the help of their sister dealership in San Diego home of the US racing team. It had just over 200hp and I would drive the 911 and 944 owners crazy. I added Koni shocks and suspension and a Monza exhaust system. The last thing I added was a factory Carrera kit. With the solid shaft between the engine and the transmission behind the rear wheels that car would take a 90 degree turn at 60mph without any complaints. God I miss that car. Thanks for the video.
924 -->manual transmission, rear wheel drive, light weight: cant go wrong with that setup.
My first porsche was a 944. Loved the look and the cornering was amazing.
Here in Germany the 924, 944 and 968 don't get much love in the Porsche community, but I gotta say I don't really get why that is. They are, regardless of their relatively low power, very good drivers cars with pretty much perfect weight distribution. One day I really want to buy a 944 and build it into a real understatement machine. Leave the outside stock, stiffen up the chassis, give it a limited slip diff, modern brakes, maybe half a rollcage in the back, some agerssive rubber, maybe even swap in a modern Audi engine.
968 is hardly 'unloved'. Prices for good examples have been fairly steady over a large number of years. Sure, it's not as loved as the 911, but it holds its own against 'regular' cars.
944 is very well loved pretty much everywhere, just check the prices
This is a cool car, I saw it at the Hotwheels party at Magnus' garage, he was still working on the details at that point. Great video.
Greatly enjoyed this vlog Magnus speaks volumes of truth regarding a fantastic underrated drivers auto...much thanks back in my days of exploring certain hallucinating thoughts I'm sure Magnus would be a great traveler to hang with...
I love your “OBSESSION”
I learned a lot THANKS!!
Ce type à vraiment un goût certain pour la chose automobilistique. Je ne savais pas qu'il avait aussi des PMA. Ce mec est un mythe.
Que du bonheur cette vidéo.
Interviewed this fella with his mum in the room asking if I'd like a nice cup of tea, lovely chap and very down to earth
Would love to see a Petrolicious video on the 928! Truly a masterpiece of engineering.
Great to see Magnus in a video again.
Magnus is a legend! love this guys style.
Love it. Happy to see the 924 platform finally getting some respect. Only thing is that now they will get expensive :/
yep prices will now go up
B Reilly haha they're already expensive.
this guy wont do shit to porsches prices globally
I allways loved them 924....
Such a great mechanical.driving experience in the 924. Everyone should drive one at least once. Its raw its engaging and you will be surprised by the fun handling of the 50/50 weight distribution. Mine is almost ready to get back on the road, looking forward to chucking it around again after some muxh needed TLC and rebuilding 👍
As always, beautiful job. Fine job. Great.
Awesome would love to see more of Magnus Walkers Transaxles. I own my 944 S2 for 3,5 years now and it’s such an enjoyable car. Very underrated. But great handling because of the transaxle.
Thumbs up 👍 but not only for the 924, your channel and the quality of the vids are amazing 😃
You guys just outdid yourselves. If I could choose to be anybody else in this world, I would be MAGNUS.
Please do more videos with Magnus Walker! His car college made of almost entirely porches is legendary!
I like it Magnus, but I have one question.. is it intoxicating??
PNWHomesteader
To him it is bec he lives, eats, and breathes Porsche. Passion wether fast or slow, old or new, vintage or rusty if it's what you love it will be !
Had a friend 30 years ago owning a base 924. Agreed, not very powerful, but after driving it many many times, I can say it still was a Porsche.
Strong, stout body and chassis, no flex in curves at all, very well planted to the road.
. Very pleasant to drive
I think in the 8 minutes we can say that it is challenging, exhilarating and intoxicating for him. LOL
not forgetting rewarding!
and it touches all the senses, Like the hangy hair thing on my head. Did you notice?
Wow. Agree with your every word about the driving experience. Mid 90's the only Carrera GT I could find was an abused wreck so I bought a mint, low mileage 81 924 turbo instead. Had a ton of fun with it, joined PCA, did Auto X, Rally X and ice racing with it. It was an amazing daily/race car. I remember flying down FDR, doing 120-130 in the rain with no effort, beating much more powerful cars, seeing the Manhattan skyline pass by like watching a video game. After finally crashing it I transferred the engine to my gray market, light weight '80 924 turbo and added the carrera GT fenders and an 89 interior, Fuchs wheels found in Hershey's Porsche swap meet. After a short and incredible time with it ended up in Florida in 03 and has been sitting ever since waiting to be tracked but wife and kids didn't leave much for my ol girl. Now I am in Antalya, been thru some amazing cars in, my daily is 500+ hp Jag but I still miss "my car" and the way it made me feel. Thanks.
He's a smart guy. He buy's the stuff nobody likes.
I had the pleasure of enjoying Angeles Crest Highway in my 2013 full bolt-on Focus ST and on my 2009 R6 many times over the 3 years I lived in the Antelope Valley. Miss all those wonderful roads available there now that I’m back in Texas.
World class storytelling .... great job
Ran into Magnus at a bar during SEMA. Snapped a pic with him, super nice guy and dealt with my awkwardness very kindly lol.
RIP interview audio. Also RIP 924 prices.
well done..Magnus. It looks great, just the way it is!
Prices just went through the roof... Magnus, why? I love it anyway.
I really appreciate your love and respect for Porsche, you’r actually not as scary as you look😎
I test drove a 924 turbo in the late 90’s. I was a fairly new driver at the time. It felt amazing, telepathic feel. It would be interesting to have a go now that I have a bit more experience with faster cars. The turbo lag didn’t bother me, if there was any, like I say new driver at the time. The salesman who accompanied me told me that wasn’t scared of it. I took that as a compliment.
Magnus is a legend. Might look like a homeless person, but that's what's fun about him....and the fact that he's rich with a huge number of Porsches in his garage :D
Wade it’s crazy! If I saw this guy in the street, I would probably offer him a dollar...
crutksdub buddy thats just wrong ...
Looks like the British Rob Zombie to me lol
Wade he's no wannabe, thats for sure!👍 seems like a great guy with an awesome car collection!!!!👍😎😍
He's the human equivalent of a sleeper car.
That's a killer workshop...
That's no workshop...there's not a single tool in sight.
Love this car, nice to see magnus does too.
oh men I love this channel
Great episode. What a cool 924.
This is such a beautiful painting
I hope to one day meet you. Your love for Porsche’s reminds me of me. I too love Porsche cars and worked, fabricated and modified them at Ricks Porsche Service (RPS Automotive)
Thank you Magnus, be well!
Awesome. I own a 89 944 S2 and its an awesome car. Love it. Great video for all transaxle fans ;)
The 944 is still my favourite ever Porsche
That 924 Carrera GT is just good looking. I wish my 944 had that hood and nose panel. It’s bad ass.
All that creation... Beautiful
You have an amazing life man!🙏
Awsome video...consider myself so lucky to have driven Angeles Crest and Glendora Mountain Road in all my VW's...miss you So. Cal...
Mine is Hwy 18 between San Bernardino and Big Bear when i lived near there. even tho plenty of traffic it was closer to my home and definitely a great drive. Seeing Catalina Island on a clear day is unreal.
The Porsche 924 is obviously the best Porsche ever made .
It saved porshe financially and enabled them to reinvest in the more modern stuff we see today I love my 924.
Magnus is legendary for being the most passionate Porsche owner in the world.
Sûrement la chaine automobile youtube la plus fantastique, quelle kiffe ! / Surely the most fantastic automotive channel of youtube, great pleasure to see yours videos !
Petrolicious is hipster as hell and Magnus is hipster as hell and I'm not even mad because they both do great work.
Those wheels are to die for!!!
This is way too awesome!
The Magnus warehouse is amazing!
great video made by a true enthusiast!
Beautiful machine, love it!
Magnus is such a cool dude!
Owned a 924 and regret to this day that I broke it ......... Extremely good handling car. Nible and fast!
Magnus walker, the coolest
Cat, with great taste. Drive
What feels right . 👊
I like a lot of things about this English Gentleman. He is the Sir of the porche cars. Hi mate!
A true outlaw, always locking the cameraman behind
I wish I lives there, with that amount of Porsches🤘🏼
First fixer upper was an early gen 924. Learned alot on what to do and not to do haha.
I have an 87 924s. Such a modest and fun car.
I'm a simple man, I see Magnus Walker, I give thumbs up!
