    Just rewatched this after a few years. The 4MT needs renagnetising or a new magnet. If you fit a Super Neo magnet, it will zoom along and draw less current!😂

    Hi Lawrie. Fantastic video, Dublo really is a fantastic toy, some of their models I find even more fascinating than the modern super detail stuff ngl. Unfortunately my 3-rail track is all packed up in a box for now and locos in a glass cabinet in my room.
    Btw, If you're finding your locos seems to be struggling it may be worth looking into either re-energizing or even replacing the motor magnets as they do loose their pull over time and so the motor becomes really weak and pron to burning out too.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  Рік тому +1

      I was thinking of replacing them with neo magnets

  • @jbhtrams
    @jbhtrams Рік тому +2

    Laurie. The Triang controller you used is a half wave controller. If you use a proper full wave controller the motors will run quieter and smoother.
    The 4mt needs a new/renagnetised magnet🧲
    I gave replaced all mine with Super Neo magnets. The performance is better than they ever were!!!
    60+ years old and still going.
    Super Mecanno (Binns Road, Liverpool...SCOUSE!!!) QUALITY.
    Serviced with new magnets, they will run better and another 60 years!!!!

    • @michaeljohnson3396

      Hi, I've also used neo magnets. You can get a lot more power out of the engines with them, but you have to make sure you don't run them at full speed. I've heard that the spindles on the armatures can wear out, don't know how true that is though. Another alternative is if you have a large number of engines then there's a 00 guy named Ronald Dodd who sells dublo remagnetizers. It will re mag most engines with the magnet still in the motor. 👍

    • @jbhtrams
      @jbhtrams Рік тому

      MichaelJohnson3396.
      I have never heard of one Dublo armature spindle wearing out.
      If they are well lubtricated they will run for decades. If armatures burn out, they are usually rewound on the same spindle.

    • @jbhtrams
      @jbhtrams Рік тому

      If you take the body off the 4MT an stick another magnet on the loco one, and the pulling power increases, this will prove if the magnet is worn out.

      I don't think even Frank Hornby himself thought his designs would last so long.
      Mine have all been converted to 2-rail now but examples such as the West Country Barnstable/Dorchester, once serviced, will even run as well and double head with the Hornby versions of the 2000s.
      Mine are all running fine although I use Gaugemaster controllers!

  • @bow-tiedengineer4453
    @bow-tiedengineer4453 Рік тому +13

    If you want this to work better, I have two suggestions. The best thing to do would be to have two controllers on opposite ends of the circuit to help top up the voltage. Alternatively, it would be a significant improvement if you put the controller in the middle of the strait segment and ran a wire with alligator clips across the narrow middle to power both sides better.
    edit: or if you have a crossover, doing a figure 8 with extended loops and powering it near the crossover

    Its great seeing these old Dublo loco's running. I really need to get some of my dads old Dublo loco's working as he has quite a few including two N2's, a Castle class loco, a A4, One of The Duchess Class loco's and I think there is a Stanier tank engine like yours. I will need a motor for the one N2's as its completely missing and repair the valve gear on the A4 Sir Nigel Gresley (thats the one I really want to see running). I have now got the Ideal tool to help me test the Dublo loco's, my small collection of Triang loco's and all of the much more modern 00 gauge loco's in the form of a rolling road from DCC concepts (the 10 axle premium version). Even thought they aren't cheap I have found it a ideal test piece of equipment especially before and after a service on a loco.

    the problem with loose lay is you have to take it up again. most folk dont have space BUT if you can find a large table for the shop ADD an additional top to it with clearance , create a board for most of the track a little smaller and place sheet plastic between the top and lower section of the new table (one side removable) create from your track the best out and back with as many loops as you can ( obv not all locos will do the tighter curves , basically see how you can move around the length of track into the best rectangular space. Having it on a board , but stored under a table enables movement to exhibitions. alternatively if one board too difficult to move it is sections for the peripheral loops that need a removable connection accross the track joins which is doable, with a smaller inner square for the sidings bits.

    If the models have never been re-magnetised, it's likely that you'd see a big difference after doing this - the motor permanent magnets do degrade with time (raising the current draw, and motor heating), and given the age of these - that's a lot of time! Still, the quality of the equipment Meccano produced is shown here - I don't know if stuff produced now will do this in 60 years time!
