Sammy Hagar & The Circle- "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" Van Halen (Circle @Home Sessions No. 9)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- When I heard that Kurt Cobain had taken his own life, the first thing I thought of was I wish I were there and could have tried to save him. The original title for these lyrics were “I want to show you what love can do," but because it was such a dark horrible thing I just couldn’t shine a light on it. So I changed the final line to “Don’t tell me what love can do."
P.S. It was also the time of the breaking up of Van Halen, our last album and tour so it added a lot of emotion, negativity and pain in the original vocal performance which surfaced the second I started singing this song for the first time since 1995.
It's episode 9 of the Circle @Home Sessions.
#CircleAtHome #SammyAndTheCircle #DontTellMeWhatLoveCanDo
I can't believe how good Sammy's voice sounds still at 72 years old! The dude is amazing!
Because, unlike Dave, he's been exercising his pipes for 50 years.
pass the Word! 🙏UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll 💜😎
Thinking the same,he sounds incredible.
look how good he looks wow
@@greatlikeelviseh6063 Dave hasn't exercised his pipes? Hell you can't shut his dumb ass up.
And I would like to add that Mr. Vic Johnson is very underrated the dude phenomenal on the guitar give some love to this boy he rocks
I agree, Vic is top notch...😉
He is a class act. He’s got the goods.
So good
damn right. its amazing, how he looks like he hardly tries yet just belts out that awesomeness he does.
I always like to point out that the singer who has worked with Ronnie Montrose, Eddie Van Halen, Neil Schon, Gary Pihl (now with Boston) and Joe Satriani, has recorded more music with Vic Johnson than any of the others. Respect.
Shit. Mikey's backup vocals alone bring this to another level.
Brian Leichliter Always. 🤘🏼❤️
Always Have
Heck yes. But I did miss those sweet high “ahhhhhhhhh”s during the chorus
Yeah. This is the best one yet
No doubt there..he made some of those Van Halen songs
Forget the junk the record companies release today. This is completely top notch! LOVE IT!
This is darker & heavier!! 💯
💪🖤👊
Man Sammy can still belt out the tunes. Great backing vocals from Vic and Mikey too.
Michael's voice sounds so good on this. He is truly the voice of VH. Sammy even says so.
pass the Word! UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll 💜😎
So true...
Absolutely... Most everyone would agree with that ;)
I agree. Too bad the VH brothers treated him like shit. So happy that he's got a good gig with Sammy!
Saw them on the VH3 tour. They did somebody get me a doctor. Mike sang the whole song,. VH could have easily went on as a 3 piece with Mike taking over as lead.
Everything about this version is better than the original...which is already one of my two or three fav Van Hagar songs. Love hearing the grit in Sam's voice. Absolutely sensational!!
Sammy is the man, he took Van Halen to another level, guy is unbelievable.
Raven Reyes PTZ you need hearing aids
@Raven Reyes PTZ ya,you know only 4 straight #1 albums
Yes he did 🤘
David Russell dude!? You know, he ain't called the "The Red Rocker", for no reason, right!? Granted, I gotta say, he did add some weight and he did get a more grungy voice and all. BUT!? HE IS 72 freakin' year's old and STILL makin them newbie's sound like trash! I mean, he, Draiman(Disturbed) & Hetfield(Metallica), make mass majority of them newbie's sound like they still jerkin off in the lil boy's room, compared to their vocal's! Hell, even the God of the vocal's, Steve Perry(Solo & Journey), is makin them newbies seem like they ain't got a damn clue, compared to these legend's, of the rocker's!
VAN HAGAR
I love this song. Just discovered it this week.
I got chills when Sammy finally went to his higher register. Top 5 all time favorite Van Halen song for me.
pass the Word! 🙏UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll💜😎
The song actually sounds better tuned down like this.
@@stratplayer96 is in standard tune. Out. Of e
@@wcp1972 Nope. It wasn't even standard when the played it in 95. This version is WAY down from the original
There isn't ANYBODY better than these four in music today.

Styx
Helloween
Nobody better than Vic Johnson or Michael Anthony? Really?
Nah
‘Balance’ is a completely under rated album. I left my senior prom early because I had Balance Tour tickets the next night.
Holy Shit made the hair on the back of my neck stand up good job guys. Man.........blown away
I didn’t think that song could get any better. I was wrong!
Seriously. The new background vocals give it a much eerier vibe that would have sounded killer on the original. I am really digging this version a lot.
@@davidmcgravey9858 The album version of this song would've been even better if the background vocals weren't so quiet. I have no idea why they did that.
Great song ! It peaked at #34 in the Dutch Top 40. www.top40.nl/van-halen/van-halen-don-t-tell-me-5993

Goosebumps!
1995 Goosebumps 2020 Goosebumps on my Goosebumps!!
Forget a Van Halen Reunion Tour. I rather see The Circle: The Lockdown Sessions Tour instead.
1000%. I was aware that Sammy was doing something these days but that's it. Became a huge fan during lockdown and really hope to get the chance to see them someday. One of the last however many months' silver linings. Ps found their live album on Spotify. very strong. can't believe I've been missing this. I would definitely rather see these guys than a VH reunion.
@@jasonkaye4628 I can say this 100%, that out of all the people doing these types of Lockdown sessions, The Circle stands above them all.
Exactly fucking right!!!
They are number one on my list once things open up again !!
@@tinaern Same here Tina.
Mikey has the coolest backround vocals.....love it!
So happy to see Sammy and the Circle keeping this era of Van Halen alive....Love the Balance album..album is so underrated IMO.. Keep it alive..
Ol' Sam rarely makes a mistake of any great magnitude. He's got a great band and it's a fine remake.
Michael Anthony is the backing vocals for Van Halen. - Sammy Hagar
Amazing to put these 2 gentlemen together with anyone and you can still get the classic Van Halen sound
Thank you guys
Balance was a great album! I wore out my cassette tape back in the day...
This song originally spoke to me as a 13 year old kid whose friends had just decided to reject him. Still has that power of emotion.
bruh.. im 28.. i remember being flooded with emotion from VH at the age of 4.. and STILL.. STILL... the songs have NEVER lost their impact on me.. there is absolutely nothing else that hits me the same way..
@@FailingForFun ... I'm 45 and it's been that same way for me since I was 10! 😎👍

This song brings me back to after my mom passed away and being certain religion was not going to help me with the grieving process (that second verse)
Right there with you my friend
Sammy is amazing..... 72 years old and still has the pipes....wow..... Hey EVH you hear this?!
Don't get carried away there, Jagger at 76 is still killing in huge gigs by the way
@@hilmarschacht7611 Yeah but no - Jagger really isn't much of a singer - more of a strutter/a prancer (think chicken strutter meets prancer the reindeer). Huge gigs don't make him a great singer either. Just makes him a great at stage presence.
Sammy’s voice just stays sooooo strong! ❣️
Raw and spectacular! Thank you as always, Peace and Love!
This is. So good. Michael Anthony, one of the best bassist ever. Did I mention his amazing vocals. Well, now I did. Sammy is a freak of nature, nobody sings that good at his age. Wonderful version. Stay safe !
Sammy's Van Halen 1993 tour t-shirt was a nice touch.
Mikeys vocals were so powerful with that reverb
Mike's vocal's sounded like they were ran through something. Like chorus. Sammy's not so much. He strains in the high part toward the middle and that is totally acceptable.
Such a powerful song!
Forget the Van Halen brothers. They could’ve been giving us fans so much great music the past 30 years but couldn’t get over themselves for long enough to do it. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony are the real heart the band.
Uh you do know that Edward has been sick for the last couple of years right? Before that they were touring with Dave. Sammy and his various bands can redo as many of his Van Halen era songs as he wants. It's not going to make Eddie pick up the phone and call him. Other than Vic's playing this was pretty sloppy. I'd rather hear fresh material from Sammy.
@@mikemadunic7960 terrible mess Vic sounds horrible chugging along in the back ground out of tune, I agree Ed's been sick for a really long time. I wouldn't tour if I was Ed everyone complained about Different Kind Of Truth ... Screw them I'd stay home
@@patrickfallon3334 The only complaint(s) I heard about ADKOT was Tattoo. I wouldn't have released that as the first single. The album as a whole was good though. Ed sounded like Ed again. None of that foppish pop star guitar shit he usually shat out during the Sammy era.
I love Sammy! love this version as much as original.. Because sammy is a lyrical genius.. Keep on rockin! if i could hang out with one famous person it would be him. admire his business savey too!
Love this song. This is a way underrated VH album. I used to play that one front to back over and over.
I think it is their best. Maybe because there was tension in the group, but Balance was edgier than any other effort. I will cosign that For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was maybe their most even and smooth album, but Balance has more emotion behind it in my humble unimportant opinion.
I adored every track on this album! Played it way more often than some friends would have liked but my house my stereo so...
pass the Word! 🙏UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll 💜😎
I still do🤘🏻🤘🏻
I love Balance
I love you Sammy. Been a huge fan from montrose up to circle
Who disliked this? Probably David Lee Roth.
...or a Sammy hater(since Blabbermouth's comments section is so chock full of Sammy haters[who solely need to put down their joints{along with their water bongs and beer cans} and grow up]).
it was eddie, pretty soon there will be a second one from alex
@@stevenmillan9220 don't blame this shit on smokin' or drinkin'...never been a Sammy hater nor a democrat...
This was absolute rock n roll 101
pass the Word! 🙏UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll 💜😎
Sammy stays young because he keeps working and putting out good music.
That's it in a nutshell - just flows from him, same as breathing. He can't not put out so much of 'the best' stuff out there. It's who he is; the music.
Doesn't get any better than that!
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the greatest live band going today 🤘
pass the Word! 🙏UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll 💜😎
Balance was such an underrated album. Sammy was spot on.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but Van Halen's best music was the Sammy Hagar years, imho.
Right there with you...
The more I listen to the Sammy years, the more i agree. Much more refined.
You were right Van Halen ain't nothing without Sammy
He took that group to higher musical act and they became better. Not so Dave top 40ish. Sounded dirtier and louder with Sammy.
Agree
Awesome! Doesn't get much better than this.
Fantastic. I would prefer to see a CIRCLE show than a VH reunion. The time has past for that. Life is short. Keep moving on.
sorry, sammy voice is still top on performance, i'm glad mike still rock on backing vocal, john bonham sure he is great drummer, but what i'm miss is EVH guitar sound, his signature guitar sound in this song intro is really really memorable,at least in my opinion, dont get me wrong this cover is good but never better than the original with EVH
They all are amazing professional musicians...
My God, the vocals are so fu*king good.
I always loved the riff from this song. I loved the video when I saw on MTV (when they played videos) back in 1995. Yes, the video was dark, but the song is awesome.
Since the day I first heard this song, I knew it would be one of my all time favs and two decades later it still is. Long live The Circle!
4 Legends!! Just Awesome!!
See, Roth could never do a heavy track like this... Heavy riff and heavy lyrics. Great song and well performed here. Awesome
I remember this album so vividly...simply because of this song. It's one of the few that make to the "perfect" list for me. It is so painful and beautiful and passionate...thanks Sammy.
Sammy's voice is still freaking amazing, and the man is in his 70's! Great song, great performance. This was my VH era, and it kicked ass.
Damn.....that was AWESOME!!! Way, way better than the original. Vic can play the song better than Eddie could in a wet dream!
Balance is such a good album. One of my hidden gems along with Mane Attraction by whitelion.
pass the Word! 🙏UA-cam: Millennium-Lance and the Open Scroll 💜😎
I totally agree on both!
Balance was (without question) one of Van Halen's greatest albums musically. I was in college when Balance was released and everyone knew back then (25 years ago) it was special, but it has only gotten better with time.
Yeah I rediscovered Balance, Mane Attraction, Voodoo Highway, Edge of Thorns, and The great southern trendkill recently after a year to year album discussion regarding the better picks from certain years. It definitely felt good to revisit.
By the way white lion released all their back catalog on a 5 CD box set . It's worth getting
No one is working harder than these guys. Sounds heavy and gritty. Beautiful.
I ❤ Sammy Hagar!! 70+ years old & still rocking!! Oh .... the nights he played the Filmore in SF!! Been a huge fan of the Red Rocker most of my life. 😁
Me too. Saw him the first time back in 1980/81. Been hooked on Hagar ever since...😉
Saw him last year at the Pavillion.

@@sierraridgereaper I caught Montrose live at the Guntersville (AL) town hall in the late '70's. Sammy was rocking a walking cast on his foot. Played the next week on that same stage and could still feel the awesome.
Have loved Sammy since Montrose
A long long time 💖💖💖
Man what I wouldn't give to hear this live in person.

I did with VH on the tour it was awesome, though eddie had a hip issue, still was a great concert collective soul opened
I would have been seeing them in 2 weeks. Screw covid
TheXanaduL I seen this in concert too, only Skid Row opened instead of collective soul
I was sorry to see the tour canceled! Maybe next year!
This is by far my favorite lockdown video, Sammy's voice ages like fine wine, awesome!!
Love you Sammy! Thanks for bringing back concerts & for standing up for what is right & good in this world!
angiem107 “...standing up for what is right and good in this world.”
He made some disparaging remarks about wearing a mask to protect himself and others in public. You have your wires crossed, unless you’re a goddamn Trumpflake.
I feel like I have waited far to long for this moment
Love Balance! Please do Aftershock next! That song would slay in full-step down tuning!

Feelin' is also a great one to do
Aftershock, Feelin, and, Take Me Back are my favorite
3 off the album. I can't believe that album didn't have at least 6 top ten hits! Such a great album! I never thought if the drop d idea but now I really wanna hear it like that. Great idea!
@Ice Cube Good point. I'm sure you're right.
Hey hey hey hey, best Corona sessions in Rock guys. Love you ALL.
This is my favorite song off of “Balance.” But I really, really dig this arrangement. As usual, Mikey’s harmonies bring this to another level.
Shook his hand as he was headed to the bar at Cain's Ballroom, Tulsa..1978!
Definitely one of my favorite Hagar era VH tunes! This is a great version!
Damn!! I absolutely loved Vic's tone on this song. The tone was just punchy, clean and crisp! Vic is one of my favorite guitarist, I was in awe of him when he first joined the Wabo's. Mikey is just in love, you can see how much he loves jamming with Sammy again. Mickey and Vic's harmonies are on point too!!! What's not to love!!
2023, and watching this one again. Even during the painful time of the Balance era, this album was so criminally underrated, and is on constant rotation for me. And today, Sammy and the crew still has it! God bless you guys!
One of the best. It strikes me to the core as a mom of a suicide survivor. Thanks Sammy.... you rock.

This lineup can successfully remake the entire Balance album.
Hands up if you could listen to these guys all day 🙌🙌🙌
I don’t know about the rest of you but I get goosebumps when I watch these guys play. They are all bad ass!!!!!
Roth was an exceptional front man, among the very best ever. Only age could stop him, and there is no dishonor in that. Hagar was never that type of showman but somehow defies the passage of time and remains an exceptionally powerful vocalist at 72 years old. I admire and respect that.
Agreed. Roth and Sammy are both incredible, but in very different ways. Sammy is a vocal powerhouse, easily one of the most capable and consistent vocalists in history and he's held onto his voice like few others ever could. Roth on the otherhand was a master frontman and an incredibly clever songwriter. While I never disliked his voice, he just doesn't have the talent for singing that Sammy had, but he penned some of the most creative and entertaining songs in history and brought them to life with his eccentric and ridiculous sense of humour and bravado. They're both amazing, but for different reasons.
Roth could not carry a tune in a bucket. On his best day cannot hold a candle to Hagar's vocals.
@@Undercoverbrotherfromanother Nobody is denying that. Front man he may be, singer he is not.
Who is the tool bag that doesn't like this....
People too busy riding the Harry Styles express..????
Jesus, Sammy is still belting out this song and it still sounds better than the album version..
Long live Sammy, Vic, Mike and Jason.
I've always been a Van Hagar fan. Sammy's vocals still sound like they're straight off the album. I'm glad I stumbled upon you guys on UA-cam. Keep rockin.
Holy sh-!!! That song is hard to sing as Sammy in his 40’s. Sammy in his 70’s still crushes it. I was worried a few times I have to confess. Wow !!
Now that was awesome!!!
I love these lockdown sessions. Holy Crap, though. Sammy was pushing 73 when they did this. Amazing. He can still belt effortlessly. DLR is seven years younger and his voice has deserted him.
It already was a great song. You even managed to improve it. Well done all of you. Vic can do anything; what a talent🤙
Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do Is A Great Straight Up Killer Rock Song By Sammy Hagar And Totally Rocks It Needs To Be Fully Cranked Up All The Way To Full Maximum Volume.
Keep them coming. Sammy you’re the best!!!!
Sammy,Vic,Mike and Mr. Bonham. FRIGGIN THANKS!!!! LUV!!!
He's amazing I saw him in Houston , that sounds crazy awesome sound in his 70s his voice is 💪
great song!!
People who ask me; Do you prefer Van Halen or Van Hagar I tell them “YES”!
Fabulous.
Please consider the Seventh seal as future quarantine video.
You ROCK!!
Love this version with Mikey and Vick’s vocals they really brought something new to it :)
Awesome! Balance is such a great record. And Sammy's voice hasn't aged a bit, it's amazing!
oh but it has, like a fine wine. Just keeps getting better.
Still sounds good today as it did in the 90s. Luv the guitars on the Balance track album.
This version gives me as many goosebumps as the original still does. Amazing tune and playing.

Thank you Sammy and thank you Mike for the amazing work you have done for so many years. I hope one day I will be lucky again to see you live!
Love it. Balance kicks ass. One of my favorite VH albums! Sam still kills it🤟🤟🤟
Easily the BEST version of this song. This version really highlights all the guys’ talents! Wow!!!
I like this better than the original! Great job guys! Keep 'em coming please!
The boys hit this right out of the park! Sammy sounds so kick ass here at 73 years old. Damn I’m in awe. Vic’s guitar tone is sick. Jason and Mikey laying down the groove And those background vocals by Mikey and Vic are sick. I this performance of the lock down sessions is the best one. They are all good but this is just another level. Eddie would be proud. RIP
Yeah 🌟 Love ‘Balance’.. you all rocked it & we Thank you❣️💫💫
