I was not feeling well, my 90 years can do that sometimes, and then I found this on UA-cam and I felt better almost immediately. What a wonderful production of this masterly Verdi work. The huge chorus is wonderful. The orchestra with so many youngsters has a glorious sound and so beautifully conducted by Maestro Noseda. Then there are the 4 soloists, everyone a gem. The soprano sent chills down my spine. So glad I found this. Feeling much better.
Top class soloists - but MARIA AGRESTA was simply ethereal! The youth and technical skill of the Verbier Festival Orchestra, as ever, adds a level of freshness and excitement - edge of the seat stuff; can even forgive the brass for running away with the end of the Sanctus (hats off to the bassoonist - I wonder where he’s playing now). And kissing the score at the end - a poignant homage to the master! I loved this concert - but sadly, this year, Verbier Festival tickets shot up in price - not sure I can afford to go any more…
Overall, a splendid performance, and thank you for making this available to watch. I have several recordings of this work, the earliest being a vinyl disc, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and choir under the baton of the late Herbert Von Karajan ( spelling ? ), bought about age 14 or thereabouts !! ( distant history ) Another recording on cd, performed by the London Festival Orchestra and choir - this event though is superb in every way - so, much appreciated, thank you :)
It was a treat singing in our local choral group the Verdi Requiem during my first year with the chorus. In my estimation it os beautiful but too theatrical and operatic to be my favorite sacred composition.
