But they did take discounts both did. I remember McDavid saying he didn’t want to cap strap the team and wanted to help the team win. And Leon was underpaid but he got even better after that signing so I believe he was worth 10m at the time both took discounts just Leon got extremely better after that signing.
@@ryans413 it was a discount for Connor not drai. From 2014-15 to 2016-17 he had 137 points in 191 games played. That contract at the time was an overpay but after a down year in 17-18 scoring only 70 in 78 GP he has been stellar. In the last 5-6 years he has absolutely earned the money he's been paid plus shown he was worth more. But given what he showed leading up to the summer of 2017 before the 17-18 season he objectively wasn't worth that money yet. It wasn't taking a discount when he signed it because he wasn't worth the money then. You can look back and say he should've made more now which is fair to say but that doesn't make it a discount

As a canuck guy that doesn't like the leafs but being in the west also watched alot of Leon. Both are not great in their own end, both have very high game IQ... Leon has greater compete but Marner will be a good player for much longer as I see Leon dropping off due to poor skating and a big body that is breaking down. Just my opinion.

This is a nothing story, they are simply waiting until the new GM is signed before extending these guys. The only reason the acting GM made some great moves right now is because it had to be done before other teams signed guys etc...this signing isn't a big rush that needs to be done right this moment.
And this is also why the acting GM doesn't want to gig full time. The pressure involved with signing these two....I wouldn't want it either

Here’s what you do you call in Leon you call in Connor sit them down say how much you appreciate there hard work and tell them you see a future in them and you want to continue to help them on their journey to a cup. Leave the room let the boys talk to each other then ask what there demands are. Then grab a pen and a contract and ask how much you want. Done because at this point those two deserved to get paid do it now figure out the cap later.
If he’s being paid 30% below his value then you actually want to divide it by 0.7. His market salary is then 12.15

He did not give a discount, the original extension was around market value at the time he signed (some even argued it was an overpay lol). Just to clarify.
It doesn't matter if it wasn't a discount when it was signed. It's been a discount for the last 4 years at least. That's the point. They've had him at a discount for years.
Toronto media was irate when Edmonton signed Draisaitl to that 8.5 million. They lamented that it adversely affected the contract negotiations with Nylander, who by the way was also underpaid for a period of time.
These are just some eastern guys hoping that the Oilers get as screwed as the Leafs are with their core 4.
The money might take a back seat to the glory that these 2 can achieve in their current situation. I believe that in Edmonton, these guys are on the cusp of a dynasty.

It's easy to say Leon has played at 30% less his value… from a 2024 standpoint. But when he signed that contract in 2017, it was considered an overpay in both AAV & term by a lot of the "smart hockey minds" around the league. He hasn't been "underpaid" - he signed a rockin' good deal for him at the time - and man, it turned out beyond amazing for the Oil as well. I'm Oiler fan for life, and I have everything crossed both 29 & 97 are here always. I'm also a fan from the 80's and know that if 99 can go bye-bye, anyone can (ie: Stamkos). I love these guys and I love my team. Keeping keeping the faith & everything crossed! Lets Go Oilers!
Your standpoint doesn’t matter. It matters about the here and now. Draisaitl was underpaid for the majority of the contract. He has to extract some value for himself in this contract. 12 mil is the appropriate starting point. This just doesn’t work for Edm long term. They screwed around too much in past years and now time has come up to them.

As for the first point from the OP - I guess if you're a complete dick but if your employer overpaid you hugely because he saw 'potential' in you, and you performed then over performed, again - unless you're a complete dick - you wouldn't have some sense of loyalty to that team? Look at Mackinnon - he was grossly underpaid - he re-signed in Colorado. Leon is not a dick - he has loyalty and he knows he could of easily been given Mackinnon money 7 years ago and he would of took it. 8.5m 7 years ago was a HUGE amount against the cap. Unless he's really lowballed by us (he won't be) he'll re-sign here. And if he does go somewhere, wherever he goes, that team will have to clear a lot of cap space to sign him, and the Oilers will have a lot of cap room - so all good either way
Adam is wrong on one thing. LD did NOT give a hometown discount on his current contract. If you go back and look at the consensus around the league, it was, in fact, an OVERPAY at the time. It turned out to be incredible luck that LD almost immediately popped as a player and tilted that contract so far into value territory as to be absurd.
The point of this is to make clear that LD should not have any hard feelings about his value contract because when it was signed, the team could have squeezed him ...but they didn't.
They both took discounts actually yes Leon’s was a bit of an over payment but at the time the market was 10m for Leon 16m for Connor both took discounts Leon’s deal just looked crazy good because he got crazy good right after.

The thing is, Draisaitl IS getting paid no matter what happens. However, if he WANTS to stay in Edmonton and win in Edmonton, that raise is just going to be a little bit less than what he could get in free agency. Every team needs guys to take a little bit less money to better the entire team. That's just how it works with a salary cap. I know nobody wants to hear this, but that is literally the issue with the Leafs. They have paid too many players too much money and now really can't do much without giving up too much, because their up against the cap. Mathews isn't worth the money he's making. Neither is Marner, Tavares or Nylander. Had those guys taken even a million less each, the Leafs would be in a much better place.

I love you guys, but you guys are looking at this like the Edmonton Oilers are the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Oilers with the cup as their goal remain on the team, and Leon is one of them. Whatever discount is might take for the team to assemble the right pieces to get him and McDavid the cup, it’s going to happen. The Edmonton Oilers are team oriented, sacrificial for one another and saw the Stanley Cup in person. It’s cup or bust, and those who want a paycheque, can go to Vancouver or LA. Whoever wants a cup, come to Edmonton. Shave your price down a bit, but it’ll get made up for when you have a Stanley cup ring bonus.

Teams that draft well should be should be rewarded. Either a tax on UFA signings or a discount against the cap for players you draft, develop and sign longterm. We'd find out which GMs are doing the best job.

it's easy to say they gotta keep him... if all it was was the hockey its a no brainer.. but when you deal with salary caps... either some one or ones have to take a discount or it kills you.. just look at the stiuation in Toronto how they have a few guys with big numbers and they have to cut with support players.. it's not an easy call...
Toronto paid way too much for the core four, and this panel looks at everything through leaf economics. Draisaitl and McDavid re -sign at an amount that will make leafs fans spin their heads . It will be at that moment that they realize they were taken to the cleaners by the core four, who fail to deliver a single thing in the playoffs. Dubas was way over his head in negotiations . The 11.5 for Tavares is a perfect example of a GM over valuing a player. Almost Mcdavid like money for a real good hockey player, causing all subsequent contracts to be far too much, for guys slightly better than Tavares.
No other GM in the NHL would take on those core four contracts. They are all two million too much. Let Mitch go to free agency and will see what he is worth.

I’m saying it now both Connor and Leon are staying Oilers for their entire career. This may sound very bias but I don’t see them leaving. How could you up and leave after the season they just had. The management crew has been much better the team is in a way better place since those two have been drafted. The cup is literally on the Oilers doorstep trading Leon would be a big mistake and put this team back a few years. Leon is totally entitled to a big pay day I want him to get his worth. I could see McDavid at 16m and Leon at 12m it’ll be up to management to figure it out.

Draisaitl will get $14m minimum. He's much better than Matthews 13.25 just from playoff performances. McDavid will get $16m minimum if cap goes up $5m again. And Bouchard will get $9m for sure too. That's $39 million right there in 3 guys.

Let's understand also that Both Draisaitl & McDavid can't stay healthy (yes everyone gets banged up) during a playoff run. However, their injuries especially Draisaitl's really affect his play. He is at best 50% of normal. Just look at the past two years alone. If they cannot stay healthy then depth on the 3rd and 4th lines is critical for a cup. If they keep getting hurt, how long do their bodies hold up during any length extension?

Unpopular opinion, Oilers should deal him and cash in.. His body is breaking down, his skating mechanics are not great ( meaning he'll struggle with pace in a season or 2). Amazing hockey IQ but I think he will fall off a cliff in a couple seasons due to injury and being slow.

My theory is that Drai only signs for another 2 years because McDavid is signed for another 2 years.

Negotiations with 29 and 97 are really simple. They make ALOT of money, do you want to be known as the players who made "x" amount of money and ZERO cups? Or do you want to win a (some) cups? Simple.

I'd rather win than cap strap my team. Take a lower deal and make up the difference in endorsement deals (which both McDavid and Drai obviously get) if they like coming in second place every year then ask for 13 million/season.

During the losing streak Leon looked like a man ready to leave for green pastures. Hes a great player and deserves a raise. But here in Edmonton all we’ve done is talk about how different contracts are hurting us, how hard it’s been to fill gaps in the line up without cap room. You lose a lot if Leon leaves but who has to go if he stays. And when. If the holes in the line up remain where does the Money come from to pay for guys you need. It just feels like there’s a real good chance that this becomes something that gets looked back on later as a mistake

Edm can’t win here. McDavid easily gets 16 mil on the open market. Bc Draisaitl contract comes 1st this puts Edm in a bad spot. Draisaitl is already underpaid and can easily get 12 mil open market. They need to trade Leon but with the understanding they are never going to win this trade upfront and try to win this or come out even in the aggregate. Edm cannot afford McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard without sacrificing depth around them. Edm has tried this before and it was a failure. They will only be able to keep two of Bouchard, Draisaitl, and McDavid…
