Hey, thank you for this video. I am one of those switching over from Finale after 30 yrs. of working with that software. I move very quickly in finale and I hope to be able to do that with Dorico. Thanks again.
I am figuring it out. It is a nice platform with plenty of flexibility in work flow. I like that. The only thing that is kind of a downer is that it does not have the tap tempo function with the hyper scribe like finale has. That was a major feature that I use when transcribing. It is very convenient and quick to be able to sync the measures with an audio track just by tapping in the tempo as you listen to it. I have never seen a feature like that in any other software but finale. Not sure why. It seems like it would be an easy thing to add since finale has had that function for a very long time. Anyway, thanks for your response.
@@danielcarlheister680 Ah I see, ya there are certainly interesting nuances between the two. Curious though, the current "Tap Tempo" in Write mode, does that work for you?
Thanks! Changing the key functions is a life saver! The rhythmic grid always seemed clunky to me - your suggestion to assign the grid to the F keys is brilliant. I also like changing the numeric keypad to Finale's values (35 years of 5 = quarter note feels right!) Again, I sincerely appreciate your videos, insight, and tips.
Thanks for the tips! 10 year finale user migrating to Dorico, and my biggest struggle initially was note input. Hoping to share some revelations I've made as well to help others in similar positions. Dorico has 2 note entry methods- Duration before Pitch, and Pitch before Duration. They added the latter method in order to more closely mimic the way Finale's Speedy Entry works. I started with this method, but unfortunately it is not quite 1-1 with Finale's Speedy right now, and I would recommend to avoid it. I've found that Duration Before Pitch (Dorico's intended method) clicked much easier for me. One thing I didn't see mentioned in this video that was a godsend for me is the 'Advance Caret' function (mapped to space bar by default.) In Write mode, this will allow you to advance the orange indicator on the grid by the rhythmic value you have selected, rather than by just one unit. For example, if I want to input 3 quarter notes and then a quarter rest, I would go to Write mode, simply hit 5 on my numpad (or 6 if you're using Dorico's defaults,) play my 3 notes on MIDI keyboard, then press space to advance the caret by 1 quarter rest. This prevents having to fiddle with Alt + [ and ], and you can also map Advance Caret to something on the numpad for better ergonomics
This is a great point! I don't use as much MIDI entry in notation as I do in a DAW. In fact, when I was writing my recent percussion concerto, I did a lot of typing the notes in with Dorico. Awkward at first, but I got quicker over time.
What you said around the 18 minute mark is profound and incredibly insightful - Solving our problems/issues from the macro level (Library) first before going to the micro level (tweaking the minutia) - a concept that really doesn't work as well with the Document Options of Finale (in fact, dynamics and slurs are NOT available in Document Options!). I won't miss mindless fiddling around with my scores!
It was an adjustment to me to start thinking this way, but after a while I was like, "wait this makes sense...I'm focusing more on the music first, then cleanup later."
Something similar is doable with Dorico. You can use the computer keyboard to type in the notes with the corresponding letters, the number pad controls duration. 👍
I bought Dorico at the end of September, the money left my bank, but I have not actually been able to open it. There is no contact address for Steinberg and so I'm just going round in circles. I've no idea how to reach the page that you've just shown of the new Dorico file. The closest I've been is to the Steinberg library. How do I open it? Who can I approach for help?
The popovers look like a huge time saver. Great video
Happy to help! Ya they can take a bit to remember, because there are so many of them, but certainly become a time saver

I'm sure you'll move even faster in Dorico in no time! What are the pressure points you're encountering?

This is very beneficial

I agree, anything other than 5=1/4 note is bonkers! 😂

Happy to help!
Great video!!🎉
Thank you!!
Have a nice day, is there a Speedy entry tool option in Dorico? In Finale, it is a brilliant possibility to write notes on the PC keyboard

Have you posted on the Steinberg forums? People are very quick on that site.
Have you downloaded and installed via the Steinberg installer?
this is dorico 5 PRO yes?
Yes, that's correct.
