Dorico Tutorials (Part 6)
This is *part 6* of the Dorico Tutorial series where I go one by one through specific questions that I was asked by other students I've given Dorico lessons to. In total, I've recorded more than 60 of these short videos to help explain some of the techniques of using Dorico. We'll go through Dorico basics, changes from Finale, and also different methods to solve the same issue.
This series will continue with several different parts, so as to break up the videos into digestible chunks.

Great video!!🎉
love your content on TouchOsc. really appreciate the time and effort. one small nitpick/ suggestion though: your screen recordings have such a high resolution it's really hard to see any details on smaller screens. might be worth bumping down to a smaller format or scaling up your UI's so that people watching on smaller screens can pick out some of the details.
This is a lifesaver!!! Thanks for this!
Happy to help!
TKs very much. It’s clear for a Finale Guy as me. So I’m ready to go.
Glad the videos are helpful
I love that dog! the video was helpful too.
Thanks! Happy the info is helpful! 🐕🐕
if I want to leave the bottom in hold until I push anuder bottom I can. do it?
You mean with a toggle?
@TimCorpus thanks I add script
how to mack grupe bottom if I have 4 bottom that I control one by one and the colore change to ?
Hi thank you for the video. I already recorded midi tracks and I would like to change the MIDI Expression in post. I know this can be done buying a standard physical MIDI slider, assigning to it the CC11 feature (MIDI Expression). I’m just wondering, would it be possible to do that also with a software slider like this app?
Hi, I saw that you can easily insert the Letters to be used for the concertation, but how do you put the big numbers instead of the letters? Thanks!
You can change them in Engraving Library I believe
T’es son much. Short and clean and very very helpfull.
Glad they're useful!
OMG! No more "change to real whole rest"? 😃
Right!?
Hey. Is it possible to map last used parameter to a slider in touchOSC? So I can have one big fader on iPad and fine tune selected parameter? Thx in advance.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support!
Since I’m guessing that most folks watching are using midi keyboards for entry, it would be helpful to approach entry that way. Also, Dorico’s tutorials emphasize the keyboard shortcuts for quicker entry, it would be great if you could emphasize that rather than the mousing around to the icons on the screen.
Sure thing. Things are certainly less point&click on Dorico. You're totally right that learning the keyboard shortcuts is advantageous for speed in Dorico. The jump bar is especially helpful.
hi, I can't get the script following your link , can you help me out
Hello sir. My name is Ralph Garrett and I’m a keyboardist. I wanted to ask you how much would you charge if I asked could you create a Ableton TouchOSC template that would be SUPER convenient for me live performances to use on my iOS devices. If so, I can send you my Ableton template for reference to create and understand what I’m aiming for. Thanks and let me know at your convenience.
Hey, thanks for reaching out. Send me a message at music@timcorpus.net with some details about what you're trying to accomplish and I can get back to you there.
Thank you. I use those tutorials, the Dorico course manual, and my own notes. I compile these into the transcript of the videos and put everything into one big text file. I then upload this file into an AI like Claude, where I create a project called 'Dorico.' This way, whenever I have questions about Dorico, I can simply ask within the 'Dorico' project and receive immediate answers. This approach has been very helpful
Glad the videos are useful. Didn't realize I was training AI at the same time.
@@TimCorpus well.. only my personal project.
@@remi.bolduc 🤣
Does doing this keep the old musx file as well as make a new file?
Yes the original musx file will remain as it was last saved.
Hey have you done an indepth tutorial in sending osc via usb? I can't get it to work, and can't figure out which port to use.
Have you checked out the Back to Basics Touch OSC 101 video?
@@TimCorpus I did, but i couldn't fin what I was looking for. I can send osc messages from my iPad (USB) to ableton using Osc TouchOSC. But I can't receive using OSC send. Nothing happens. I've used the receive port and host ip from the ipad in the host and port of Osc Send, but nothing happens. It works on my computer using the local host ip.
This was so helpful! Thank you so much.
Happy to help!
Hello, I recently encountered a problem I want to dump the synthesizer system information file to touchOsc touchOsc receives the data and stores it, so that I can recall the synthesizer parameters next time. Is it possible to do this? How to do it? Thank you very much!
What type of data to store? If you're wanting to say specific CC data on a fader for example, you could set that in your template and save. But basically you'll just need to save your template to whatever the synth settings are.
@@TimCorpus weiss eq SysEx data, thankU!
@@caoccp1 So the process should be similar. It will depend on your receiving device, but I recommend creating a template with the numbers in the data you want to send, pre-set.
@@TimCorpus grateful
Thanks so much! This makes "the switch" much easier. Just a caveat...Steinberg says you should use musicXML version 4 to import into Dorico. I think that might be why they finally (pun unintented) offered a free upgrade to Finale V27. I have V26 and it only goes up to version 3 in the MusicXML preferences. So much fun!
yes! You are correct, that was a big issue and I agree, I think that's why they gave everyone access to v27.
I bought Dorico at the end of September, the money left my bank, but I have not actually been able to open it. There is no contact address for Steinberg and so I'm just going round in circles. I've no idea how to reach the page that you've just shown of the new Dorico file. The closest I've been is to the Steinberg library. How do I open it? Who can I approach for help?
Have you posted on the Steinberg forums? People are very quick on that site. Have you downloaded and installed via the Steinberg installer?
Is there a way to get bridge for mac?
Ya, it's listed on their website: hexler.net/touchosc
Hi! it says that the device has been discontinued? Is it no longer available?
What device are you referring to?
@@TimCorpus the connection kit
Thanks for doing this series. As a FINALE user, from version 4, I am having a nightmare of a time learning how to use DORICO. I just spent 2 weeks working on what I'm calling a "learning" piece. If I'd done it in Finale it might have taken me 2 days. I'm slow! Hours of trying to find answers to questions. This is one I haven't solved yet and I'm wondering if it's possible. Can I set up my Title in the default page template so that it is justified left on even pages, and justified right on the odd pages. I also want to add Page # before the page number. I'm guessing that's a pretty easy fix, but since I'm asking. I personally usually have ALL my page numbers on the right of the score... "Piece Title - page #". So first part of the question: How do I move the even page page number to the right side of the page and include "Page# - " before the actual page number. Second part: I'd like to take a look at that same format like this: even page justified left - "Page #2 - Piece Name", odd page justified right - "Piece Name - Page 3". Let me know if you do a tutorial on this. Thanks!
Dorico certainly functions differently from Finale, but those questions are definitely doable in Dorico and the nice thing is that if you add anything, the objects won't move or random text won't show on all pages like back in Finale. I'm preparing a video all on parts and pages preparation (it's a big topic), but for now I'll say, in Engrave mode, add a page before your first page of music to be your title page. You'll use the page templates to define "what goes where", it will also push your pages over to the right by the number of pages you insert. Also in Layout > Library Options you can set that the music begins on right or left page at the beginning of the flow.
Hey Tim, I'm able to send OSC messages to control various things inside of Reaper but decided to try and implement Reaper reporting back to the device so I started with this tutorial. With a fresh template and following along, my "track name" label doesn't reflect the names of the tracks. It just says "Master" the whole time when the session starts. Any ideas?
Are other OSC messages getting to your device from Reaper? (Like cc, volume, etc ) And do you have the Ableton Max module on the track you're sending data from?
@@TimCorpus I tried things outside the scope of this video like using the default reaper osc files (and changing the names inside OSC to reflect them) like names of plugins, track number, etc. but it still never reports the information back to OSC. I need Ableton Max module to get Reaper to send the states back to OSC?
Sorry, I was confused. No Max things for Reaper. So for the OSC messages, you'll have to use what is in the config doc. There's OSC protocols within Reaper for what can be sent (or what it's names are). This article can be helpful: www.reaper.fm/sdk/osc/osc.php However, I'll note that if the simple setup, like in this video, isn't showing on the tablet, it may not be receiving all OSC data from Reaper > device. I'd recommend checking any security protocols that may block OSC messages, or double check all connections to make sure simple messages can get through.
@@TimCorpus Firewall was off, and I downloaded Protokol. I was receiving from my DAW but nothing was being done with the information. Eventually, I was able to get some stuff working but the same behavior exists with track name reporting; it just says "master." Everything sends from touchosc, but touchosc doesn't receive and change the states of everything. Just some stuff... I have the solo button reporting back to touchosc, but the mute button - with the same options as the Solo button under OSC messages being: enabled, send, and receive - does not report back. Protokol sees it. Solo in the reaper config and touch are the same, and so is mute (/track/solo and /track/mute, respectively). And, I think this is related to why the track name only says "master," solo, mute, fader movement, etc. those changes happen on the currently selected track AND the master. One step forward, two backwards lol
Your Dorico Tutorials Part 1, 2 & 3 are great. These tutorials really help to speed up my workflow, every topic you explained is useful. Looking forward for Part 4 🙂.
Happy to help!
You can make the frames center. Just make sure to expand the frame from the very left to the very right. And also make sure the page margins are the same.
Ya that's true, or also keeping same measurements from the sides. I'd like to have more modern settings though. 👍👍
@@TimCorpus I think it's quite easy if you already have made a title page template. Might as well save as default that margins are euqal and then just center the text in normal text settings. I wouldn't reccomend doing it as you did in the video, where the frame is kind of in the middle somewhere. Because if you decide to change the page or staff size, the frames could shift (this shifting was frustrating at first but when I figured out the locking mechanism, it works perfectly!)
Bridge is not coming up in the send and receive when trying to add device to S1 :D Not sure what im missing, thx :D
If bridge is not coming up, that sounds like a PreSonus issue. Bridge should show as long as it's turned on in the computer - with or without a tablet device connected to it.
Thanks for the tutorial, very useful ! I was wondering, is there a way to send a key for "Page Up" and "Page Down" ?
Has it been deprecated somehow ? Can't even make the github template work on notepad 🥲
Not that I know of. Those special keys I haven't found yet.
This video is super helpful! Thank you so much!
I have a question. I use Touch OSC with Widi Master wireless midi into my ipad to control the 600 on the fly. The issue I have is with an assign for "cur.trk num". I want 6 buttons on my OSC screen 1-6 so i can make any of the trks the current trk easily. This reduces the number of assigns I need to use overall . I just can't get it to work. I have tried various different value formats in the "scale" fields in Touch OSC but to no avail. (Midi channel and cc controller number constant). Do you have any thoughts?
Is there anyway to have all my musx files batch printed as pdf files? I find the format, look and layout of the xml files really not good enough.
There's a way to do this with a script, however, it's still a little clunky. I'm planning a video on that soon too. In the meantime, there's a finale script that can do multiple files.
I searched for all of my .musx and .mus files and made a copy of them and put them into one folder. I was able to make over 6000 .xml files by letting my machine go. There were a few really old files that it could not handle, so I had to click skip. But really it worked perfectly.
How can I link this with adobe audition instead of Ableton?
You should be able to pair MIDI messages. Edit > Preferences > Control Surface (Windows) or Adobe Audition > Preferences > Control Surface (MAC).
Can I do this with adobe audition and a rotary encoder using TOUCHOSC? , when I installed the touchosc adobe audition recognise it in the interface but I don't know how t link the command to the radials and faders. I have a rotary encoder (a dial) and I'm using it like midi or OSC with a ip and a port to link this rotary encoder to touchOSC and it's working and is recognise it like a Midi with channels as well. Now I would like to link the TouchOSC to adobe audition but I don´t know how, I don't see any ip in adobe auditions options but I only know that is recognising touchOSC. I want to use the dial to control the playback, the jog or scroll. THank you.
Thanks for these videos. I will certainly check them all out. What I really want is a nice printed book that teaches Dorico. I'm old-school for sure but I find printed text much easier to work with than online tutorials. The problem of course is that with constant software upgrades the books rapidly go out of date. Finale Power! was a terrific guide. Now we need Dorico Power! or Dorico for Composers.
Have you checked out the latest Dorico manual? It's quite extensive.
@@TimCorpus Yes, just printed out 111 pages today and have started going through it. The hardest part is unlearning Finale after 30 years.
@@martinhaub6828 there are some crossovers, but yes it's a lot to learn. I changed the number pad in Dorico to match Finale because I didn't like their setup and also didn't want to learn a new number to note length system.
Hi Tim, thank you for such great content! May I ask about the model of your midi keyboard, which goes well with OSC?thx :)
The midi keyboard does not do osc, it's just an 88 key Casio privia.
@@TimCorpus Thanks!
Hey Tim! I think the link to the nudge button script is dead. Where can I find it please?
Is it possible the Trackname TouchOSC patch doesn't work with Ableton 12.1 ? I can't drag it anywhere on a track er anywhere else in Ableton.
watching the videos to buy that product and i am tired before use it....fucking complicated
Haha, ya it was certainly a bit of a curve to get together. My Back to Basics video, which is newer, probably covers the updates a bit more clearly.
as always that product is so complicated to make it work
I'm trying to get channel level meters working in Logic Pro. You'd think copying and modifying a fader from the LogicPad template and in Logic Controller Assignments using "Level Meters" with the same name as the fader would work.
A lot of the times if you copy and paste objects, the object name changes, not just the messages. Make sure everything is still talking to each other
I can't figure out how to get level meters going. I'm using the LogicPad template, copy paste the "volume1" fader, call the copy "levelmeter1", disable "OSC send", color it green and in Logic Controller Assignments under "Level Meters > LED and vertical meter > Ch 1 signal" under the OSC parameters I call it all "1/levelmeter1". I've tried just "levelmeter1" and also Learn Mode (with OSC send on TouchOSC enabled) but Logic doesn't get any OSC messages when I move that fader, even though it looks fine in the TouchOSC log. Dancing meters right on TouchOSC (on the channel select buttons and giant ones on the channel strip would be excellent.
is it possible to assign a different midi CC for each box in the Dropdown Menu?
Ya I think it'd probably be best to do that with a script, but you could try setting to each object.
(Solved, see below): I'm doing the "try before you buy" thing, so I'm running the TouchOSC Mac App. The Mac looks identical to the iPad app shown here, but there's no menu button on the side (2:50 in the video) so I can't browse the templates. And Logic just mutes/unmutes all the channels uncontrollably. SOLUTION: It's in the Mac Menu Bar under: Help > Examples"
Thanks for the great tutorials! Question: I'm using TouchOSC on my iPad with Max Msp and I'm trying to control certain parameters in Max using the iPad accelerometer. Do you have tips/resources/suggestions on how to make that work? I'm trying to get my iPad to send the OSC messages to my laptop (I'm using both mobile and desktop apps) but I'm struggling. Thanks!
can you do these things in Midi editor but using the OSC messages Command ID? or do you have to use midi?
In Reaper, you can send actions from TouchOSC as OSC or MIDI. Action IDs are super useful in Reaper to link to a custom action
@@TimCorpus I've come into an obstacle where doing a "/action/*command ID* " address doesn't work for reapers midi editor. is it possible i need to type something else into the address for the button to affect the Midi Editor Window?
this is dorico 5 PRO yes?
Yes, that's correct.
