- Dentist says do not crown your teeth! Dr. O follows up a popular video with a clinical example of how veneers are better choices for repairing front teeth. He also shares the 4 reasons why one might need a dental crown over a dental veneer. Dr. O is a cosmetic dentist in Springfield, MO that has a passion for creating smiles through innovation.
The 4 reasons that a front tooth may need a dental crown are:
1 - Replacement of currently existing crown
2 - A tooth with a root canal
3 - Severe decay that wraps behind the tooth (very rare)
4 - Severe tooth wear (crowns should only follow repositioning of teeth to their original position with braces or invisalign.

I’m a semester away from starting medical school. I wasn’t really excited before but I love how you talked about dentistry like sculpting it’s really cool
I never went to the dentist as a child, and I'm now paying the price. 🤦🏾♀️
Tee Love I’m sorry 😢 I feel your pain
Same here girl ..... now im going on root canal procedure on my 2 front tooth
I’m sorry, I completely understand.
I was never taken when I was a kid and once I was finally able to afford to go on my own when I was 19, it was a lot. 7k later lol
Girl same, I want to cry at how bad it’s gotten
You gotta look at it this way, at least you're taking care of it now! It's way better than not having teeth. It's worth taking care of from this point on 😊🙌
As a Prosthodontist, I couldn't agree more....in fact, with the advances in material science, there are fewer posterior teeth that need crowns as well. That being said, nothing is better than a cast gold crown on a second molar if your tooth has fractured and you are a grinder. Dr. D
I’ve worked in the healthcare sector for 25 years so I love to see healthcare professionals who are passionate and innovative. Thinking outside the box to improve life for your patients is really exciting. Wishing you continued success. Also I wish you would expand to Ireland we need improvement in our dental sector.
An honest dentist giving solid information. I like this guy. More dentists need to be like this.
I like that you're a medical professional that has morals beyond your wallet. I used to work in a pharmacy as the lead tech and kept our store number one in the district and would still constantly get into trouble for letting people know that they didn't always have to buy those outrageously expensive medications that would do more harm than good in some situations..I left because I started realizing that I had different morals than that industry. It's funny how most medical and pharmaceutical professionals will almost always take care of their own wallet first and recommend the expensive treatment that isn't always 100% necessary rather than looking out for the patients best interests in all aspects. You, sir, deserve a slow clap.
This is so true. I just recently had an extraction on last Monday and on that same day. My dentist ofc and telling me that I need a root canal and crown and they schdeuled for 09/04. I dont know about that.
Bryan Edge indeed..sadly this is the decayed mindset of the 21st century
veneers P25,000 each more expensive than CROWN and root canals here in Philippines RCT + Crown P13,000 hehheheh But he is right clinically...
Our cost per crown is the same as a root canal.
@Bryan: You, my friend: are spot on!

Hi there doc, 3rd year dental student here! This is a great video and you explained everything behind the decision making in a simple and entertaining way! Glad I came across your channel!
When I got married I started going to my Wife's dentist. It didn't take long before I realized he was more into selling unnessicary hi profit procedures than honest care. Constantly telling me I needed this or that, while ignoring 2 years of pain as "not flossing well enough". I got a second opinion from a DDS who found a severe abscess in my jaw. He also sold my then 79 year old father in law a mouth full of crowns that looked ridiculous. Like bright white chicklets for several thousand dollars. Lesson- do you research and find a reputable dentist and stick with him or her.
That would almost be true unless we charge the same amount for both. Huh.
I was being sarcastic for effect. We charge the same for both so your statement about me trying to sell people is incorrect. I simply want people to get better care by not having so much of their tooth drilled away if they don’t have to. This was the point of the video.
@@InnovativeDentalofSpringfield I wasn't directing my comment at your honesty and genuine care. Your video was very helpful. I was describing bad experiences with one Dentist. There are many like him as others could likely attest to. Fortunately, Dentists like this are in the minority.
Not too sure there are any reputable dentist around anymore. I've noticed for at least 30 years dentist seem to always push the expensive fix even if it's not warranted.
@@InnovativeDentalofSpringfield they didn
They didn't say anything like that, what are you replying to?
I'm glad you advocate about "saving more of our tooth structure". Most dentists just don't care that much about my request and concern. I didn't want to give them hard time either, just looking out for my well being. Once the damage is done, there's no way to get it back ever. Thanks for explanation and videos.
Most dentists don't care about your health they just want money and to keep their license, which if the recommend holistic approaches they can have their license taken away
It really depends on how your teeth are. Crowns saved me 100x more money, more headache and more pain than getting veneers. Most dentists don’t talk you into what you need, they talk you into what will take longer and what will possibly keep you coming back and spending money and it’s a shame that people do that. Took me 4 dentist before one sat down, looked at the issue and gave me a solution instead of a temporary bandaid. AND....he did all the work for free so I can enlist in the military with no issues.
Thank you for that comment.
What did they do?
Bless his heart
It would be irresponsible for a dentist to tell people "you know pick the option that is cheapest". Crowns are not a permanent fix, they last 10-15 years. If they cant be replaced then the only option is implant or some sort of denture. Sure a veneer might have you back in 15-20 years too, but they can usually very easily be replaced with more venners, and youre actually just replacing the failing venner material not the tooth. Worse case scenario you need a crown that will then last another 15 years. So by going veneer youre talking about something lasting worst case scenario 10 years, to something worst case scenario lasting 25, but maybe 35 years worst case. This is why they should reccomend this kind of approach to you.
We charge the same in our office for veneers and crowns. This allows us to always give our patients the very best for their particular situation. - Dr. O
I hope i get a dentist like you, not someone just trying to do unnecessary bs at the expense of my teeth
Great video by an honest Dentist. If only all Dentists were like this.

I wish dental work was more affordable. Thanks for the info! God bless!
You should shop around! To tell you the truth, most dentists are transparent as there are usually charging the fee guide pricing. Some dentists also offer payment plans at little to no interest. Most dentists are pretty flexible 😊🙌
I hear you. 90% of dentists in the U.S. are just looking to make a fast buck. Drill, fill, and bill. Try starting a dental savings account and put a little in it each paycheck! Hope it helps.

Yes this video helped so much! Lots of dentist want to cut straight to crowns or root canal especially if you don’t have that much money. But thanks for the honesty!
Thanks for doing what you do and don't be pressured by other dentists.
Thanks so much for this video. It's so refreshing to hear your perspective. I came up during an awful time in dentistry in New York City I think, where dentists usually took the worst case scenario approach. I'm paying for it now in big bucks to correct my teeth and structure. I have so much tooth and gun damage, and shifting, from excessive fillings, extractions, root canals, etc. over the years. Soon we will be addressing a tiny chip I've been carrying in my front chopper tooth (this tooth is the sister of my favorite 2 front teeth). I refused any dentist who tried to touch it. It's barely visible, however, I know I have to get to it. Now I'm working with a dentist I trust and when we get to that tooth I'll be sure to bring this up. Great info here.
Can you be my dentist?! Finally someone that actually cares about people not $$
Ren G. Its not for being care for $$ its for doing a treatment that it’s proven that will last and work. Unfortunately the more cracked or decayed a tooth is the more difficult it’s to predict how it will respond the tooth nerve. The thing is you can do a treatment like this with a 40% of success ratio or make root canal treatment in the needed teeth and then go for crown and expect a 99% success ratio. At the end you could end paying 2 times. The patient is the one that takes the risk, not the dentist. That’s the reason that the majority of dentists go for something that it’s proven that will work. But hey if you want to ending paying 2 times... we’ll it’s your choice. Maybe works, maybe not.
6 years and going strong without root canals needed. If you have a con beam 3D, then check the endo, success is somewhere around 60% if you classify success as no radiolucient lesson.
@@InnovativeDentalofSpringfield Can an adult 30+ actually get braces or anything to fix a bite? I have a severe problem with an overbite where my bottom teeth have ground into my top ones, causing pain and tooth wear. I'm trying to figure out what my options would be. Can they extend my rear molars with a composite to add some height to my bite?
@@StreetWorksMedia I have never seen anyone that did not have an overbite or an underbite. It would be strange to see someone who, when they close their mouth, their front teel clamp together perfectly flush. Therefore, your problem may be hat you don't have enough of an overbite, not that you have an overbite.
@@kriswhite91What dentist conned you into thinking crowns are 99% successful? The less tooth structure you remove the longer your teeth will last . Drilling for crowns damages nerves often leading to nerve death, abscess and root canals. Crowned teeth usually get decayed underneath because you can't clean them and they can't be remineralized by saliva. If you get an onlay, ,filling or veneer, you're far less likely to have your tooth die which then requires root canals which get dangerous infections. The basic principle is that it's best to preserve as much tooth structure as possible. Dentists make far more money from crowns than fillings or onlays. They also make more money from crowns because crowning leads to needing future expensive work.
Thank you for your professionalism and honesty. Unfortunately, I have had terrible experiences with dentists and can’t find an honest, knowledgeable one in New York. If I could, I would fly to your clinic!
Great insights. Thank you.

@@InnovativeDentalofSpringfield Speaking of shady. Quite a lot of places just immediately check if you have your wisdom teeth and mark them for removal even when there's nothing wrong with them. They get quite disappointed when you refuse after repeatedly being pushed to remove them.

Thanks for explaining this. In July 2020 I broke one of my back teeth & we were in lockdown, so it took 8 months of going back & forth to my dentist getting filling etc. I got my crown fitted in March last year. Last week I was brushing my teeth & I used salty water as I had a sore mouth & had the dentist that day. My crown fell out my mouth & went down the sink. My tooth was drilled down to make way for the crown. He said just leave it or get it taken out. I'm so unhappy that it didn't even last a year. 😔😔
Did they replace it for free cuz that sounds like negligent practice as crown should lasts many years.
@Mausi Imlicht Thanks for replying. I did speak to them but they said I can't get my money back. So I will just have to put up with it. 😔

No you don't! Crowns cost upwards of $2,500.00 apiece in the U.S. and dental insurance only covers cleanings. That's why many Americans go to Mexico for their dental work. Love what you are saying, wish I had a dentist like you.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I recently had a composite with an existing tooth fragment which was an angular frontal Chip 0 to 2 mm front left to center that failed. The original composite lasted thirty years without decay, root failure or discoloration. Every single dentist I have visited wanted to cap my front tooth. (Central Florida) finally found a reputable composite dentist ,and voilà they were able to transform a very healthy tooth back to a condition that was indeed “cosmetic” ,but returned all the benefits of not grinding down a normal tooth without side effects. Yes, I won’t be ripping any potato chip bags open with this tooth. But I am left with a healthy frontal tooth structure that in the future I can change if needed instead of something that is irreversible.
Great. Glad the video helped and thanks for sharing. I wish you the best.
To all future dentist out there , this Dr SHOULD be your model. Otherwise you still have the chance to shift to other courses many souls will thank you later. -just my2 cents
Agree. Most dentists become theves and are the main reason why teeth cant last through your entire life. Low morale standards in the entire profession due to the massive amount of money involved. It is a mystery to me why policy makers havent intervened yet.
One success story does not mean all cases are a success story. I would like to see dozens of patient, randomly chosen, before accepting his ideas about dental treatment. He may be a good dentist but he also seems like a better salesman

Great video! Any chance of video of composite filling vs amalgam? Thanks. I am thinking about replacing my old metal fillings with composites.
Thanks so much!!
I've had all three suggestions for my "chipped"/fractured front tooth. I did composite from the time I fractured my front tooth until I was 18-19 years old. I'd have to get it redone at least 3-4 times a year. Finally I got a veneer done and from then until I was 23 it would pop off at least once a year. My old dentist retired the year after I got the veneer done and the last time it popped off my new dentist and I agreed that enough was enough and I went ahead with doing a crown. Not only does the crown look and feel at a whole lot better, but it also feels so much more stronger than when I had the veneer. I think it's very dependent case by case on whether or not a veneer or crown would be best. In my case, the crown was the better option.
Glad it has worked for you. I would have first checked out your bite before I ground down your tooth more for a crown. Usually if a veneer or filling keeps coming off, it is due to a poor bite or misalignment on the lower arch.
My front tooth is completely chipped. More than half of it is missing. I'm worried what will happen when i have to get the composite replaced. I don't know if i need a crown or implant because it feels a little loose. :\
What you described is truly a reality. I have been practicing 25 plus years and veneers are not always the answer and in fact rarely are the answer. Additionally a veneer in my practice cost more than a crown.
I had chipped front tooth when i was 7 years old, never got a problem like pain or loosening conditions. When i was 18, went free dental camp there they said you need to go root canal, it may worse if you not, so they made a hole cleared everything and closed with cement or something, but it went of next day. Hole got opened never went doctor again because of no money. Now my age 28 So real problem started 4 years ago, tooth becoming black slowly, sometimes i feel embarrass so finally i visited doctor 1 week ago started treatment to get a crown...
Does it look natural and feel close to natural

Oh wow, that looks nice. I used to be really scared of the dentist, didn't go for a long time and had a lot of decay (not so much cavities, but worn down teeth). Then with a lot of courage I went back to the dentist and got over my fear. He made me veneers to. I was so proud, within a week I lost both front teeth veneers in a week, they where replaced, took for a week of three. Every few weeks I would lose a veneer untill the point my dentist gave up and just stopped replacing them. Now I have worse teeth then before I went to the dentist. Wish I would live near your practice. I would definitely make an appointment.
a root canal is a $1000 in the US?
that is really expensive, it is $50 to a $100 here in Jordan.

I had one of my canine teeth crowned until it was extracted because my teeth is crowded due to wisdom tooth growing behind and it was the weakest link. It was still strong and no problem at all when it was extracted and I never regret it. I was a nut eater and I don’t think that veneer would last that long if I keep on eating nuts.
