I'm glad you advocate about "saving more of our tooth structure". Most dentists just don't care that much about my request and concern. I didn't want to give them hard time either, just looking out for my well being. Once the damage is done, there's no way to get it back ever. Thanks for explanation and videos.

As a Prosthodontist, I couldn't agree more....in fact, with the advances in material science, there are fewer posterior teeth that need crowns as well. That being said, nothing is better than a cast gold crown on a second molar if your tooth has fractured and you are a grinder. Dr. D

I've had all three suggestions for my "chipped"/fractured front tooth. I did composite from the time I fractured my front tooth until I was 18-19 years old. I'd have to get it redone at least 3-4 times a year. Finally I got a veneer done and from then until I was 23 it would pop off at least once a year. My old dentist retired the year after I got the veneer done and the last time it popped off my new dentist and I agreed that enough was enough and I went ahead with doing a crown. Not only does the crown look and feel at a whole lot better, but it also feels so much more stronger than when I had the veneer. I think it's very dependent case by case on whether or not a veneer or crown would be best. In my case, the crown was the better option.

Glad it has worked for you. I would have first checked out your bite before I ground down your tooth more for a crown. Usually if a veneer or filling keeps coming off, it is due to a poor bite or misalignment on the lower arch.

I had chipped front tooth when i was 7 years old, never got a problem like pain or loosening conditions. When i was 18, went free dental camp there they said you need to go root canal, it may worse if you not, so they made a hole cleared everything and closed with cement or something, but it went of next day. Hole got opened never went doctor again because of no money. Now my age 28 So real problem started 4 years ago, tooth becoming black slowly, sometimes i feel embarrass so finally i visited doctor 1 week ago started treatment to get a crown...

When I got married I started going to my Wife's dentist. It didn't take long before I realized he was more into selling unnessicary hi profit procedures than honest care. Constantly telling me I needed this or that, while ignoring 2 years of pain as "not flossing well enough". I got a second opinion from a DDS who found a severe abscess in my jaw. He also sold my then 79 year old father in law a mouth full of crowns that looked ridiculous. Like bright white chicklets for several thousand dollars. Lesson- do you research and find a reputable dentist and stick with him or her.

I like that you're a medical professional that has morals beyond your wallet. I used to work in a pharmacy as the lead tech and kept our store number one in the district and would still constantly get into trouble for letting people know that they didn't always have to buy those outrageously expensive medications that would do more harm than good in some situations..I left because I started realizing that I had different morals than that industry. It's funny how most medical and pharmaceutical professionals will almost always take care of their own wallet first and recommend the expensive treatment that isn't always 100% necessary rather than looking out for the patients best interests in all aspects. You, sir, deserve a slow clap.

It really depends on how your teeth are. Crowns saved me 100x more money, more headache and more pain than getting veneers. Most dentists don’t talk you into what you need, they talk you into what will take longer and what will possibly keep you coming back and spending money and it’s a shame that people do that. Took me 4 dentist before one sat down, looked at the issue and gave me a solution instead of a temporary bandaid. AND....he did all the work for free so I can enlist in the military with no issues.

It would be irresponsible for a dentist to tell people "you know pick the option that is cheapest". Crowns are not a permanent fix, they last 10-15 years. If they cant be replaced then the only option is implant or some sort of denture. Sure a veneer might have you back in 15-20 years too, but they can usually very easily be replaced with more venners, and youre actually just replacing the failing venner material not the tooth. Worse case scenario you need a crown that will then last another 15 years. So by going veneer youre talking about something lasting worst case scenario 10 years, to something worst case scenario lasting 25, but maybe 35 years worst case. This is why they should reccomend this kind of approach to you.

In July 2020 I broke one of my back teeth & we were in lockdown, so it took 8 months of going back & forth to my dentist getting filling etc. I got my crown fitted in March last year. Last week I was brushing my teeth & I used salty water as I had a sore mouth & had the dentist that day. My crown fell out my mouth & went down the sink. My tooth was drilled down to make way for the crown. He said just leave it or get it taken out. I'm so unhappy that it didn't even last a year. 😔😔

Ren G. Its not for being care for $$ its for doing a treatment that it’s proven that will last and work. Unfortunately the more cracked or decayed a tooth is the more difficult it’s to predict how it will respond the tooth nerve. The thing is you can do a treatment like this with a 40% of success ratio or make root canal treatment in the needed teeth and then go for crown and expect a 99% success ratio. At the end you could end paying 2 times. The patient is the one that takes the risk, not the dentist. That’s the reason that the majority of dentists go for something that it’s proven that will work. But hey if you want to ending paying 2 times... we’ll it’s your choice. Maybe works, maybe not.

@@kriswhite91What dentist conned you into thinking crowns are 99% successful? The less tooth structure you remove the longer your teeth will last . Drilling for crowns damages nerves often leading to nerve death, abscess and root canals. Crowned teeth usually get decayed underneath because you can't clean them and they can't be remineralized by saliva. If you get an onlay, ,filling or veneer, you're far less likely to have your tooth die which then requires root canals which get dangerous infections. The basic principle is that it's best to preserve as much tooth structure as possible. Dentists make far more money from crowns than fillings or onlays. They also make more money from crowns because crowning leads to needing future expensive work.

The original composite lasted thirty years without decay, root failure or discoloration. Every single dentist I have visited wanted to cap my front tooth. (Central Florida) finally found a reputable composite dentist ,and voilà they were able to transform a very healthy tooth back to a condition that was indeed “cosmetic” ,but returned all the benefits of not grinding down a normal tooth without side effects. Yes, I won’t be ripping any potato chip bags open with this tooth. But I am left with a healthy frontal tooth structure that in the future I can change if needed instead of something that is irreversible.

It was still strong and no problem at all when it was extracted and I never regret it. I was a nut eater and I don’t think that veneer would last that long if I keep on eating nuts. It was a zirconium crown and I really picked the strongest one because I’m scared to loose my tooth again. I will never pick veneer because I don’t think that it’s strong enough. I had no pain, no sensitivity, no issues at all, but the x-rays revealed a very large and deep cavity in one tooth near the gum line, and another tooth with a significantly smaller spot at the gum line. When I was 5 we got into an accident and she lost a few teeth when they hit the steering wheel. She was only 40 years old and the genius she went to suggested pulling all her teeth pretty much said it was her only option. My mother had all her teeth pulled not knowing any better and has had dentures ever since. I am now 31 years of age and am suffering from her bad genetics and am broke being that I live in New York my whole life and come from nothing and have had some unfortunate events in my life that have always prevented me from having the extra money to fix my teeth. I wish there was something I could do to fix my smile b4 I end up like my mom. Thanks so much for this video. It's so refreshing to hear your perspective. I came up during an awful time in dentistry in New York City I think, where dentists usually took the worst case scenario approach. I'm paying for it now in big bucks to correct my teeth and structure. I have so much tooth and gun damage, and shifting, from excessive fillings, extractions, root canals, etc. over the years. Soon we will be addressing a tiny chip I've been carrying in my front chopper tooth (this tooth is the sister of my favorite 2 front teeth). I refused any dentist who tried to touch it. It's barely visible, however, I know I have to get to it. Now I'm working with a dentist I trust and when we get to that tooth I'll be sure to bring this up. Great info here.

The dentist said he could do veneers but did crowns. Last time I was in his office, he got out of the room fast. How could a dentist grind anyone teeth down. I remember that moment seeing what he did. Each time a crown is changed it takes a little more structure. Each dentist wants to shape it to suit their taste. Eventually there is not much and the tooth breaks.. even though still completely healthy underneath. My six front teeth were good. It was a bad decision. All these young people getting veneers will regret it in 20 30 years when they have to keep replacing the veneers or crowns. Why and how can dentists even grind teet down like that. Is it all greed?

I agree with this, after I learned a very expensive lesson! In 2002, I had my 10 front teeth crowned. Otherwise healthy teeth, but severe tetracycline staining (dull grey, lifeless looking teeth). I initially wanted veneers, my dentist told me it's too hard to cover that dark of staining without porcelain crowns. I ended up choosing the Captek, a gold crown with porcelain bonded to the front. In just 3 short years, my Canine #11 just broke off at the gumline like a piece of wet chalk. A root canal was attempted, and it was so decayed that the only solution was am implant. Since I was already paying for a total of 14 crowns...on an installment loan, I had to decline. A flipper was the temporary solution. Then, every single year until 2015, one by one, even after 6 month check ups and x-rays, they kept breaking off, they had all become brittle and decayed "under" the crown. So, new partial denture in 2007, another new partial in 2008 due to more missing teeth, and the cycle went on until I eventually lost every single crown ever put on. And the real tooth underneath was lost as well, including two that had root canals and were murder to get all the root fragments out.
My partial dentures still look 100% better than my real teeth did back then with all the tetracycline, but I surely went the long and expensive way around. Implants financially were out of the question. Bridges? I have way too many missing teeth now for that. Maybe someday, an all-on-four type implant denture.
In talking about my problem, I found out that about 6 people that I know well...also ended up losing their teeth completely after aggressive crowning that was initially sought out as a cosmetic fix for unsightly teeth. I never had any dental insurance at all, so this was all out of pocket, my MasterCard was my dental insurance. Great videos here!

I been in pain and supposed to have gotten an extraction for over a year now and My insurance keeps referring me to places that either claim they recently stopped doing extractions for ppl over 21 years old or they tryna over charge me WHEN my insurance says they cover it. I been getting this feeling like all these places r tryna get money out of the customers pocket of the insurance is not paying the price that they demanding & I got a feeling they r trying to overcharge the insurance companies. 1 dentist tried to charge me 185 for an extraction and at the same time told me they were not taking my insurance anymore because they were being audited by my insurance company. Trust was a red flag and made me not trust them especially since my insurance said they were not supposed to charge me out of pocket. I be asking myself: why does a person go thru what all the things they have to go thru to become a dentist, teacher, firefighter, etc.., if they don’t even have a passion for that career. If all u wanted to do was have a get rich quick scheme u should choose a field that doesn’t jeopardize ppls livelihoods & well-being

Can you please explain, were you talking here about composite filling veneers, or ceramic veneers? I am asking because my dentist is suggesting that I should make crowns on my front teeth, ( because during the years, and a lot of my front teeth repairment, I have lost of lot of tooth enamel... There is almost more composite fillings from the back side of my front teeth , than tooth enamel ), but as a " cheeper " variant, my dentist says , that solution would be - composite filling veneers. My biggest fear about putting crowns in my front teeth is - that in a period of 10 years or so, I would lose my front teeth ... Thank you in advance !

This is definitely making me rethink things. My dentist wants to do crowns on my four front teeth and the two canines. The reason for the front is because I’ve had the fillings redone a number of times and he says there is not much tooth to work with and the existing fillings are leaking. There is absolutely no reason to crown the canine teeth. The dentist prior to him suggested a bridge on the front. I’ve been in and out of dentist chairs since the age of 17 when I saved money and took myself to the dentist. I’d like to keep as many of my teeth as possible. I’m concerned.

I was in an accident about 6 months ago and severely messed up my two front teeth (i loved my teeth, they are super white and i wore braces for literal years so they are perfectly straight). My Dentist is like you, he was very very pushy that we do not do a crown, only as a last resort, well we are at the last resort and a crown is pretty much the only way to save my two front teeth at all. I'm looking forward to having my teeth back to how they used to look because the I just don't want to keep walking around with a temp tooth. I know it was not his first option but it is turning out to be the best option. luckily it isn't going to cost me an arm and leg and my insurance is covering over half of it so i basically only have to pay for one tooth. thank you for keeping people informed and making sure they are with dentist who really care for their teeth.

I have gold crowns that were installed back in the mid 70's. They have never fallen out and never give me any pain. The crowns I did have trouble with were the ones where a root canal was performed. My longest lasting root canal was about 3 years and the tooth had to be extracted. Most (6 as I recall) didn't last 2 years (different dentists).

Hello! I've just started watching your videos concerning crowns. Today I went and had my teeth cleaned and my office has a new, young dentist. The hygienist had just told me that my teeth were in really good shape, no cavities. I have no pain, no complaints. Then the dentist started telling my I needed a crown on a molar because it was heavily filled with the silver type of fillings when I was about 8 or 9 yrs old... I'm 42! There is nothing broken out cracked. Then he said oh, you'll need on over on the molar on the right side as well. I think this is just a unnecessary money grab. Why on earth would I opt to have the old fillings removed and my tooth ground down to the gum line for two teeth that aren't hurting me and aren't broken? He said that one looked like it "might" have a hairline fracture. I've had 2 cavities since I was 8 or 9 years old!
If you were in NC I'd totally come to you...I feel like this guy is trying to just make more money and wonder if he would recommend this if I had no insurance.

In the future if you have any Problem then go for crown. Am 24 years old and having 6 crowns my Pre-Molar crowns are pretty cool no pain awesome bite. So then i go for my other teeths.

My son broke his front teeth at school. One worse than the other. The dentist filled them with bonding and said he will need crowns when he gets older. I asked why he didn't just do veneers and he refused to talk to me about that. He took one tooth down one of my son's tooth made it a bit shorter which I asked to why would he do that when it looks ore natural to have slightly longer front teeth. His teeth where perfectly straight and a beautiful size. So now he has bonding and he's a new adult. I think I will shop for the best cosmetic dentist because I lost sleep and cried when his dentist said crowns because I know they remove so much of the tooth plus can lead to decay. I don't know if the bonding now ruined his chances for veneers, I just think things change over time and if he wants to replace his veneers or if they discolour or whatever the down sides are he can do so more easily. I can't imagine tugging and the rotting that can happen under a crown left unnoticed.

This man is honest. Twice two dentists lied to me. I got a second opinion from other dentists. There is not that much "innovation" in modern dentistry because dentists are too busy ripping people off. What is also common is when they do not drill out all the decay and then put on a filling. Years later the tooth rots from the inside. That also happened to me.

The composite was used to build up the teeth after the decay removal. The margins were not composite but were enamel. These restorations have been on for more than 6 years now without any issues.

I had the unfortunate to go to a dentist who ruined the beauty of my old teeth. First of all, my health insurance covered 7,000 and I will have to pay 5,000. Anyway, the dentist decided to crown my front teeth and make one root canal, so in total, she took care of 5 teeth. I liked the temporary teeth crown because they looked just like mine but the permanent crowns were a complete disaster. She cut shorter the wrong front tooth and I look so weird now and when I told her that she had made a huge mistake she walked away from me and I was left by myself. At first, I thought she had switched the front teeth, but the secretary explained to me that it is impossible because when the tooth impression is made there is no way to place a wrong tooth instead. I got the conclusion that if my two front teeth were not switched, then the dentist most likely shorted the left front tooth too much and now I look weird. I regretted the day I met this dentist. I hope you can say something about my unfortunate experience. Thank you so much.

Oh wow, that looks nice. I used to be really scared of the dentist, didn't go for a long time and had a lot of decay (not so much cavities, but worn down teeth). Then with a lot of courage I went back to the dentist and got over my fear. He made me veneers to. I was so proud, within a week I lost both front teeth veneers in a week, they where replaced, took for a week of three. Every few weeks I would lose a veneer untill the point my dentist gave up and just stopped replacing them. Now I have worse teeth then before I went to the dentist. Wish I would live near your practice. I would definitely make an appointment.

man seeing that mouth makes me question my dentist sugestion of root canal, i mean i have a spot on the flat part of a upper fang , he yanked it numerous times with the hoock thing and nothing , no pain, sudenly i felt something not pain per se, just unconfort, he took it like the pulp was infected, but i have no pain in the tooth, my guess is that the decay is near the nerve but not actaully reached it and my guess is that with a filling it should be fine for a few years, what do you guys think, should i go to second opinion?

    • @madmatt2024
      @madmatt2024 4 роки тому +1

Nothing wrong with getting a second opinion. When you have an intrusion into the nerve or pulp you will have pain the moment it happens and it won't go away. I know because I cracked a tooth. Even then my dentist tried a filling first, he said sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't. Unfortunately for me, it didn't work and I needed a root canal and crown.

I was in the same spot as you. I had a root canal on my #14 molar and still experienced sensitivity. The issue was a small crack on the corner of the cusp. It was extremely difficult to locate. When the cracked part-of the tooth would move, it would cause irritation of the gum and periodontal tissue.

I like this guy a lot better than the dentist I saw today. I found out that one of my wisdom teeth was causing me pain. He wanted to remove all 4 of them even though the other three were correctly aligned and had been there for around a decade. He also wanted a crown on one of my front teeth and said it would be gone in a year. It seems unlikely to me as it hasn't changed since I initially got the decay as kid. The only reason it ever got is because I had surgery on my mouth, and they told me not to brush. I may have had braces at that time too. It's hard to remember. I would much rather try to save the tooth.
