I had a similar issue last with a new SR40; Ruger attached a digital UPS label to me the same day I called Ruger; they called me two days after receipt of the SR40 from me and said they would replace it due a housing defect; it was received by my FFL 3 days later. No costs at all to me. Fine service. Just today bought the Ruger SR45
I have to agree this is a decent little gun. My gun also has a trigger job from Terry G at Impact Guns, which makes the double action quite manageable. I had a great time at the the range comparing it to a 4" SW 617. I give the edge in accuracy to the 617 at 10 yards but not by much. If you only want one 22lr revolver, the ruger sp101 is an excellent choice.
Great video, love the close-up shots in the beginning. This is what a gun video should look like. I feel like I've received real solid info on this piece.
The double action pull can be easily remedied with a spring kit available from such places as midway or brownell's. I replaced mine in my sp101/357 and brought the DA pull down to 8 lbs. Means it's still lawyer-proof but much easier to shoot in DA mode. That was with only replacing the hammer spring, I left everything else alone and the procedure took less than 5 minutes. Very nice presentation by the way.
i had the sp101 357 (just like yours in the video) that had a problem with the trigger getting stuck back after shots and the hammer not locking when pulled back single action causing it to drop and discharge. I called ruger and they immediately had ups pick it up ,fixed it, and shipped it back in exactly 2 weeks. since then i have put my full trust in rugers customer service and i own several of their firearms because of it.
UPS just picked up my SP101 two weeks ago and it was taken to Ruger New Hampshire. It has exactly the same 3 problems you described (which caught my attention about your video). I purchased mine in April, 2013. Hope they didn't repackage your old one and resell it to me. Anyway, good video.
Thanks for the info, I was aware of the crooked barrel issue on SP101's but didn't know there could be timing issues as well. If I buy one I'll take a really close look before purchase.
I don't know if it is a change in the manufacturing end of it or if demand (because of our current economic state) has increased but i have noticed that all the gun shops around my area are out of SR9s. I think the long return time is caused by how busy Ruger is. I sent an 10/22 back to Ruger because it was jamming a few years ago and i got it back in 3 weeks. Thank you for you useful and unbiased videos. Stay safe everyone!
I had to send my 1911 to Springfield for some minor and even though it was over the Christmas Holiday the had it back to me in less than 2 weeks. And they paid shipping in both directions.
Sadly my sp101 22 that I just bought yesterday is shaving a lead off of the bullets, and I can see the cylinder wall when looking down the barrel...looks like mines going back to ruger as well
@chavezchavez556 It will be interesting to see the track record of these newer SP101s. I don't anticipate any problems with this new one, but I've heard of others having problems besides me. Thanks for watching Bro!
My only gripe with ANY Ruger revolver is when u buy them new its always best to drop a trigger job in them, which I have done on all 3 of the Ruger revolvers I have purchased. They are tight for sure compared to S&W. I know a Wolff trigger job is $20 bucks tops to lessen the lbs for trigger pull and its super simple to do, but it would be nice if Ruger would do this themselves. Still love Ruger thou. Tough, sexy revolvers!
The original problem you had is why I never buy a product, be it a gun, car, phone, anything, right at intro. If you'd have waited a bit, they would've worked the bugs out. Sounds like the gal was a bit confused the first time you called. Six weeks IS a bit long, I'll give you that one. I'd give Ruger some slack though. They've been listening to customers and rolling out guns and mods we've been asking for for a long time. I like the newer hammer, looks less industrial. Great vid on the service.
@Hazamayakiba The test fire was performed on the 21st of December so according to that date the gun is two weeks old. They had the gun for 4 solid weeks before they deemed it unrepairable. It took another two weeks to send the new gun out. Like I said before I don't feel it was an excessively long process, but not a fast one either. I didn't really take points off for the time...more for the overall information shared, phone conversations, and the shipping problem. Thanks.
Yea they take FOREVER!!! I love Ruger and feel they have great customer service, but fuck when your waiting on a gun 6 weeks seems like 6 months. I pestered the shit out of them after like a month. Still thou, Ruger is one of the best out there, period. And they are getting better. For the money cant beat the SP101, GP100, Redhawks, SR1911, SR556 and of course they make the best .22 rifles ever produced the 10/22!
6 weeks seems long but like the gentlemen said around Christmas time may have been the reason. I got my Para .45 back in 9 days for a replacement slide and other parts. from what everyone says Para is bad, not in my experiences. Iv'e had great customer support and service from Para, Smith and Colt.
@OldDood Like I said in the video I gave Ruger a "B" for they customer service which is still good. I continue to be a Ruger customer. Thanks for the kind words.
@HawkLMT Thanks for the input...I feel I explained the safety issues and problems with the gun clearly the first time I called, but there is always a possibility of miscommunication. I love Ruger's guns and this won't turn me away from them. 80-85% is still a solid B. Thanks for watching Brother!
Glad you got it back doc. The first this I did to my 357 101 was take a dremel and sanding wheel to the hammer. Man that thing would just shred my thumb after about 100 rounds or so. way to aggressive IMO
@DUKnCVR2010 Agreed...They are still very back logged on this gun. The store I bought it from originally has only seen one more since I bought it two months ago. They sell a large volume too.
It's unfortunate that a lot of firearm companies have had issues in recent years. I don't really know of any company that is exempt from some lemons. One of the biggest factors with my new firearm purchases are going to be their customer service and willingness to correct issues.
Nice video. Loved the French Dude! haha! Thanks for the update on this .22. You come off as a decent, intelligent, personable person. I would NEVER thought Ruger would come out with problems like this on a REVOLVER! A Semi? Yes! Not a revolver. The gal telling you about the shipping needs to be 'talk with'. hehe! However, 6 weeks during X-mas time is not all that bad for a return. That would be my only saving throw FOR Ruger on all of that....
Dang I'm still on the fence pulling the trigger on buying this handgun, especially what I would call a high end product that seems to have had or has Quality Control Issues! I really like the gun and I found it available, my problem is I'm torn between the Ruger 8 shot or the S&W 617 10 shot, after pondering this for a while the only real solution is to purchase both when I'm able, yea my wife will have an apoplexy but she'll get over it or (I'm sure gonna miss her like the country song says LOL)
6 weeks,,heck of a lot better than Taurus,,,I had waited over 4 months,then after I made multiple calls they had it back within 10 days,,then the rear site about fell off,,traded it for a M&P Shield
I had a Taurus as a first pistol. Locked up in the first 100rds because timing was off. It was a Taurus 94 .22LR and it was gone for about 5 months. 6 weeks is nothing. I recently sent one of the new S&W m69s back. Took about 4 weeks for S&W. Meh, I'd prefer to wait 2 more weeks and just get a Ruger... They're built a lot tougher than Smiths.
how much $ for the trigger job. Found my new SP101 22lr; the more I shoot it the more I like it. But today compared its trigger pull to that of S&W617 - big difference. Like to hear what a trigger adjustment does for you and how much it cost.
@galv49 They are still hard to come by...After getting the new gun back and putting 500 rounds through it I'm really glad I bought it. The trigger is heavy, but I can look past that for the price compared to the competitors. I've actually dropped the gun off at the gunsmiths today to get the trigger worked over. Don't let it stop you though, unless you lack strength in the hand.
@WhitSpurzon Where it was a new gun with a new serial # they were required to do a background check and all that. Agreed with the late and fixed....Thanks for watching!
@WhitSpurzon that only counts if the same serial number gun is returned. a new gun with a new serial number has to go an FFL to be transferred to the customer just as if they had purchased another one.
I JUST GOT THIS LAST WEEK.I HAVE NOT SHOT THE REVOLVER I HOPE IT'S A GOOD ONE.I HAVE THREE OTHER RUGERS WITH NO PROBS.I WOULD HATE TO GET A BAD ONE.I'M KINDA STRESSING OUT AFTER WATCHING YOUR VID.GREAT JOB BY THE WAY.I GUESS I'LL FIND OUT LOL.
I've recently had to ship two firearms to Ruger for service, one new and one used. The lady told me that they pay for shipping on new firearms but not on old ones. That makes more sense to me, and perhaps she thought you had one of the old 22 sp101's.
Too bad they gave you trouble over shipping. My FFL ships defective guns back to manufacturers for free and my fix was a very fast replacement of the slide on an LCP. Since my Ruger experience was fast and free, it was a 95%. All told, Leatherman is still my favorite customer service experience.
Right and late is OK by me. Wrong and late would miff me. The new SP101 4.2" 357 has the new style hammer too. I like it better. I thought the mfr could send a repaired gun directly back to the customer...? Are you in one of the commy states?
@DocTacDad when its your gun there is no such thing as to picky IMO lol. I think your turn around time would have been a lot quicker if it had been a gun that had been out for a while(I.E. your Smith you returned). Im sure Ruger is still fairly back logged on their 22LR 101s. Not that I am making excuses for Ruger, as I am not the biggest Ruger fan.
three months ago I was sure I wanted SP101 in 22lr now I'm really wondering if the heavy DA and , squishy SA trigger pull plus other issues are all around out there on web. Plus where are they available??
Doc tac Dad, are the 22lr and 38, 357 interchangeable in holsters. IE, is the frame the same size? If I buy a 22lr, will it fit in my 357 holster? thanks
Ruger should have done better with the turn around time...and under the circumstances they should have bent over backwards paying all shipping and sent you a hat too! Ruger sold you a dangerous gun and should have tried their best to handle it very quickly and to your conveince. I really like Ruger, but this was not their shinning moment.
It's a shame that a person spends several hundred dollars on a product. Hasas an issue with it right out the box, contacts the company that makes Millions of dollars a year. And they give you some kind of bull like that. They should have thrown in a trigger job or something for your troubles. Thanks for sharing, take care.
Six weeks is excessive. I’m having to ship a .357 SP101 back because it will not eject shells. UPS is not very helpful in shipping it back to Ruger. Disappointing. Jeff
I had a similar issue last with a new SR40; Ruger attached a digital UPS label to me the same day I called Ruger; they called me two days after receipt of the SR40 from me and said they would replace it due a housing defect; it was received by my FFL 3 days later. Here in Florida, if you have a CCW license, there's no need for background check.
Brother, awesome video! Thank you so much. Sorry about your troubles with Ruger. Glad you got it resolved.
Sadly my sp101 22 that I just bought yesterday is shaving a lead off of the bullets, and I can see the cylinder wall when looking down the barrel...looks like mines going back to ruger as well

Probably my favorite gun porno up to this point in time.
The original problem you had is why I never buy a product, be it a gun, car, phone, anything, right at intro. If you'd have waited a bit, they would've worked the bugs out. I like the new hammer. Smoother edges. Old style sharp on the fingers.
Yea they take FOREVER!!! I love Ruger and feel they have great customer service, but fuck when your waiting on a gun 6 weeks seems like 6 months. I pestered the shit out of them after like a month. Wow you are so lucky they sent you a new revolver. I tried to get springfield to replace my recalled xds and was told no !
6 weeks seems long but like the gentlemen said around Christmas time may have been the reason. I got my Para .45 back in 9 days for a replacement slide and other parts. from what everyone says Para is bad, not in my experiences. Iv'e had great customer support and service from Para, Smith and Colt.

@ironmonkeyz It's a good looking revolver...Thanks for watching Mandinga!

Glad you got it back. It's a shame you had to deal with that hassle over a bran-spanking-new gun, but at least they did finally get you taken care of.
@Hazamayakiba Good point...thanks for the perspective and input.
Nice revolver. Does it fit your hand pretty well, or is it like my Taurus 94 which feels like it might be intended for children more than adults?
@galv49 They are still hard to come by...After getting the new gun back and putting 500 rounds through it I'm really glad I bought it. @mattvanhugenstein The shop that I bought it at didn't charge me a transfer fee, but I did have to pay for the background check.
@neanderthor66 I like the stock grips that come with the SP101. Slim and functional.
6 weeks is great,,, Kimber is 3-4 months on a New Gun Repair!!
@DocTacDad when its your gun there is no such thing as to picky IMO lol. I think your turn around time would have been a lot quicker if it had been a gun that had been out for a while(I.E. your Smith you returned). That slight bit of travel word you were looking for i'm assuming was creep...
DUDE!!! You seriously have to tag a hog head with this sucker!!!
Great wheel gun ! Man rugers are build to last .... There old stuff anyways LOL
Doc tac Dad, are the 22lr and 38, 357 interchangeable in holsters. IE, is the frame the same size? If I buy a 22lr, will it fit in my 357 holster?
thanks
@Mc13oner That's what I expect from Ruger.

verrry nice!
They really cheapen the quality on the new ones today.
@diskeed Smith has impressive customer service...
@littleandres09 Thanks!
It's a shame that a person spends several hundred dollars on a product. Hasas an issue with it right out the box, contacts the company that makes Millions of dollars a year. I freaking loveb thoses grips
im surprised ruger is usually top notch maybe was new employee..
@DUKnCVR2010 It is very aggressive...I'd say the new one is actually a little on the slick side...LOL! Oh well I might be over picky.
Must have some real enemies to black out serial #'s or just paranoid
Thanks, I thought the same thing. He is hiding it so somebody doesn't tell Ruger what he did to it.
Six weeks is excessive. I’m having to ship a .357 SP101 back because it will not eject shells. UPS is not very helpful in shipping it back to Ruger. Disappointing. Jeff
@DocTacDad In Canada an 80 is an A.
Don't dry fire a .22lr revolver/pistol.
Actually it's OK to dryfire the rimfire Ruger SP101. The firing pin will not strike the cylinder.
@jtpurser Agreed.
@YamahaWR200 You assume correctly...LOL
That's hot
