Great video!! great information....I have a side question... Do you have a video of attaching a TT to a home septic system?
I don’t have a light pole they charging me 6,000 to bring one out , can I use a temporary 50 amp breaker box instead ?
It's a smart man who listens to his wife, mother or significant other, etc!
The FIRST time!
Its a hard lesson to learn.
Thank you.I like that ur wife keeps an eye on your safety 👍🏻👍🏻
Good video. Thanks. Minor recommendation is to first connect up your surge protector to the outlet without the RV plugged in with the circuit breaker off. Then turn on circuit breaker to check to see if everything is good. Then turn off the circuit breaker and connect the RV. Then circuit breaker back on. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it does prevent arcing (you can actually hear this in your video) and will prolong the life of all the male parts of your wiring.
Sounds like your supervisor is on top of your safety just like mine! Nice step by step.
That's why women live longer lol
I did the same, put a 50 amp box in just in case. I also mounted a inlet for my generator next to my RV plug so I’m well equipped!
Nice!
Thank you for posting a (not how to video ) you helped me out so much. Around here Elections charge up wards $ 250.00 per hour.
Thanks
Thanks for the tip!
This was an extremely helpful video, straight forward and informative. Thank You for posting it.
Machinist, Steve....
Well you are exactly right my friend had a thirty amp for 5years just caught a great deal on a 2022 tv of course I pick it up today and bam fifty amp lol didn’t know about the two leg thanks for the video
Always think ahead, little extra now saves a lot in the future! Thanks for watching.
I like your video, especially hearing your wife explain the need for safety glasses. Mine’s the same.
Thanks for watching!
😂 If we didn't care, we wouldn't say a word. 😉
I installed the breaker box, meter, and a 50amp outlet today. Wasn't sure about the wiring for the 50amp outlet so I searched and found your video. Thanks! It helped me knock out the rest of the job quickly! BTW I do have a 30amp rv and have the connector so I did exactly as you said and installed the 50amp! Great video... great help!!! 👍
Awesome, glad it helped and thanks for watching
Thanks for video , wat size gauge wire you use
Thanks for the video! Very informative, I installed mine the other day after watching your video, works great.
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! Easy to understand and follow…new subscriber! 😊
HEY HEY STEVE HERE. HOPEFULLY ALL OK. BEEN AWILE. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GOOD VIDEO WITH GREAT INFORMATION.
Yes, We are doing good just have had a lot going on. Hope you are doing well! Thanks for watching...
Thanks brother
Glad it helped
Best practice would be to wiggle the stranded wire as you tighten and to use a torque screwdriver to tighten to the correct torque. Some anti-oxidation compound would be helpful also.
what size breaker are you plugging the hot legs in to?
Double 50
First of all, wear your Protection glasses. lol
2nd, Nice how too video.
very nice step by step.
3rd, Heineken shirt Right on ;)
Thanks for watching! Ya step 4 crack a cold beer!
Great video man, this is the video I was looking for. I purchased the surge protector you recommended also
Thanks for watching, glad it helped!
I just wanted to get an idea what is involved. Thanks for the video. It really helped.
Glad it helped
New friend here! Really enjoyed this easy to follow video install. We are getting ready to put in a 50amp outlet ourselves and it's always great to see someone else install something first. Thanks for sharing. ~Wilson & Kelli
Glad it helped and thanks for checking out our channel. Happy travels!
Can I use romex underground if it’s buried and ran through conduit? Trying to run me a Rv as well but have about a 25ft run underground that would have to happen.
You shouldn't run romex in Conduit, look at thwn wire or direct burial uf wire.
@@RVLivingYet does the wire size change when using that material?
great video..showing ALL the steps to get the job done and getting right to the point..good video👍
Wat was the braker you used please love the video help me understand please
Great video very well explained gracias my friend
Welcome
Nice job! For your and others consideration. You said in other comments you have a 100a “Service”, not a Sub-panel. Great, I avoided the combined the ground and neutral comment. You used #6/3 WG cable for 50 amperes. Totally acceptable. But if one can not find #6/3, #8/3 WG is completely acceptable, unless like 100’ or more away. No big deal! But, something very strange. It looked as though you have a ground conductor coming in with the service entrance conductors. That is not normal. Normally, no ground in the entrance and a GEC going to a grounding electrode.
So, guessing here, if you have a utility feed going to a meter, then an exterior panel, with a breaker that feeds this building, then it IS a sub-panel. If so, very easy fix. Remove the horizontal bar across the bottom of the panel and put all neutrals on the right and all grounds on the left. Then install a #6 bare out to two ground rods. This is for your safety. Hope wife reads this. Separation is for short circuit safety, ground rods are for lightning.
Please consider fixing it! The life you save may just be your own!
Respectfully, Kevin
Nice comments on the ground and Neutral hook ups
Thanks for posting. I was thinking the same thing on the "sub" Panel. Separate and ground.
Good video! Safety first he says, then she says or last lol
Thanks for the time you put into this video!
Glad it helped thanks for watching.
easy and straight forward , thank you
Thanks for watching
Great Job
Good job ! Thank you for taking us along 👍🏼
Thanks for watching!
Great Video!!
Why is the neutral wired along with the ground?
Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching
Good stuff! Who is the smartazz in the background? 🤣
Our OSHA rep 🤣
Great video & advice ! Thx 👍
You're welcome and thanks for watching
🙏 i love it
Excellent Demo
You have bonded your neutral and ground together in a sub-panel. You might want to revisit that decision.
Its not a sub panel, this has a dedicated feed from the grid. Thanks for watching.
So I did, I misspoke, this has a separate feed. Thanks for taking the time to track that down. :)
@@RVLivingYet Separate feed from where? You didn’t have a meter base.
@@RVLivingYet I have a question. Dose L1 and L2 have to be fed from each side of the breaker box to achieve split phase?
@@RVLivingYet no meter tells me it's a sub panel
Question would it be a 100 amp breaker in the main panel or a 50 amp
Can you me more information on the breaker switch? I want to have a little more knowledge before I call an electrician. Thanks
Great Info! Thanks
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Reply grate video and thanks for the 50amp advice. Ps my ? Is
Let’s say I have 2 Rv’s that can I hook up to one 30amp or 50amp beaker.
A couple of points I'm inspired to make after watching:
1. Perhaps in the RV world the neutral is still commonly (ha!) left off. But today's code for 30A circuits in the home (typically dryers) requires a neutral. There's no other proper/safe way to split out 120V without a neutral. I say this only to point out that 30A doesn't automatically that 2-conductor wire could or should be used. This will depend on your receptacle. And I'd love ot see 4-conductor receptacles used for all this.
2. A 240V 50A circuit does *sort of* mean 100A total. But that doubling of A is sort of a fantom. And that's because a 50A breaker is supposed to trip above 50A, no matter the voltage. So if you load up 50A on one 120V leg.... when you turn the oven on that's connected to the other leg, the breaker should trip.
3. Thanks for doing this in such a no-nonsense way.
That was awesome and very detailed. Thank you!
Glad it helped, thanks for watching.
II was just wondering if you shut off power to breaker box before you started exactly the moment you said it!
I definitely would recommend it, but I have been in electricity for 20 years so pretty used to it. Work safe!
how do i use the line
I think you only get your 50 amps at one leg at a time, at any moment L1 is at 50 amps, then L2 is at 50 amps. it alternat's back and forth. I understand that it only totals 50 amps. thank you for your video.
Each leg feeds a separate side on the RV breaker panel with 120v, you can run items on each phase at the same time. It's different that a 240 dryer outlet.
You only get 50 amps not 100
@@RVLivingYet When you plug in the 14-50P in the building receptacle it should connect to another 50 amp breaker in the RV sub panel. Each leg feeds L1 bus and L2 bus with 50 amps for a 100 amps total in the RV sub panel. The 120v is derived by connecting the hot wire to a single pole breaker and the neutral wire from the same cable to the neutral bus bar. Typically 15 or 20 amp breakers. The neutral and ground bus bars must be separate in the RV and the building sub panel. The total power from the 50 amp breakers is 240v x 50 amps is 12,000 watts. It's not 100 amps x 120v, which I think you implied.
Do you turn on both sides of the breaker?
Should be a double breaker.
Yes, one of the power legs will not be connected if you use the adapter. Essentially you will have a 50 amp/110 volt circuit if the adapter is used.
Thanks for that man it really helped me
Glad it helped thanks for watching
I feel more comfortable wiring the breaker off the buss bar then installing it
Good video. Very informative.
Thank you, we appreciate that! Enjoy your day and thanks for watching!!
@@RVLivingYet I do have a question if you don’t mind. Do you have a video on how to install a simple, small DC distribution panel in a travel trailer? I recently purchased the TST TPMS for my trailer. It came with a repeater that I may need to use. However, I don’t have any place to connect the repeater to. Same thing with a wireless camera for the back of the trailer-has a repeater that I need to connect to 12VDC. I thought that having a small DC distribution panel in the storage compartment would help with connecting these things. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Milo
@@milom.2057 We have an install video on how we wired our backup cam to our running lights, we have not needed to add a DC panel and don't have any videos that would fit your needs. Have you checked if you have room in your existing panel for another circuit, I think ours had extra spaces.
@@RVLivingYet hi. Thanks for the quick response. I did look into wiring the repeaters into the existing panel. The problem is, the panel is located way at the back of the trailer, in the kitchen. Installing the repeaters that far back would put them behind the tires instead of between the tires and the tow vehicle. I’ll look for your camera install video. I’m sure there is good information on it that will help.
Thanks again,
Milo
A sub panel with ground and neutral connected? I thought only main panel had the ground and neutral connected?
You're right, misspoke in the video its not a sub panel, it has a grid feed. Good catch!
I do believe they make a outdoor box that has both the 30 amp 120 and the 50 amp 120/240 receptacle inside. And you would use either depending on which plug your rv comes with. And also if you just so happened to have some Thhn/THWN dual rated as most thhn is laying around and you wanted to run conduit or maybe that short of a run even flex metallic or nonmetallic. You would be able to use a #10 ground and a # 8 for the 50 amp circuit because it is rated 50 amps at 75 degrees C which that receptacle is and circuit breakers are dual rated 60/75 so they are rated for 75 degree C. And it probably will cost more depending on where you get your wire from since it would be individual rolls, but this method works too with the NM 6/3 cable, since it’s rated I believe 55 amps in the 60 degree C column of table 310.15(b)(16). But either way great video. Keep doing what you do.
Great comment at the end as to why put in a 50 amp outlet in case you get a visitor or you upgrade to a 50 amp in your RV. If I may ask an out of the box question. Could you use the same theory and or box to install a 50 amp box for a generator to supply your circuit panel in case of an putage and only have a 30 amp plug on the generator at the moment, hoping to upgrade the generator in the future. Just a thought.
Hi Bob, these RV outlets are female and the outlets for generator inputs would have male prongs. If you had the same style plug coming from a running generator those exposed prongs would be energize and called a "dead mans plug". Also when feeding into your circuit panel you should have a transfer switch or main panel disconnect so you don't feed energy back into the grid and potentially harm a linemen. Hope that answers the question you had.
@@RVLivingYet Thank you very much for a quick reply. Best to you and family
I have a question is that a sub panel or is it being fed directly from the power company, if not your panel's ground needs to be connected to a ground rod also in the panel the grounds and neutrals need to be separated on their own bars. Just saying. I heard you say something to the effect about being out here no inspection, but you still should want to be safe.
Fed directly, I miss spoke in the video... Thanks for watching!
Great video but remember kids safety first! Turn off that breaker
So if I upgrade the amo does it have to be short or can I run it to the other side of my house. Where I want to put the rv is on the opposite side of breaker
There are wire gauge charts to let you know how long of a wire can go per amp rating.
Nice job
Thanks!
I’m getting one installed at my home next week.
My Bougerv 50A is outdoor as well, charging an electric car. Does it need to have a GFCI in line between the plug and the box? Thank you.
What size breaker did you use?
Double 50
Just bought a Sol Horizon Rover 19'. It says in the specs, Load Center 35 amp so does that mean its a 30 amp Travel Trailer? Great video, thanks
Ya should be a 30 amp, if it has a 3 prong shore power then you will know.
@@RVLivingYet 30amp is 4 prong
Rv 30a is 3 prong as opposed to a residential 30a kitchen receptacle.
Will my 50 amp box in the garage run a 50 amp RV plug ?
Were can I get that protected plug and $
Thanks!
You're welcome
Is that a double pole 50 or 25?
DOuble 50
Very informative video! Thanks for sharing! ~ Shion and Matthew
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
You said that is a subpannel . Your neutral and ground should never be bonded in a subpannel. Only in the main. You really need to separate them .
I misspoke, not a sub panel it is fed from the meter.
I think you only need 8 awg for 50 amps. Especially that short of a run.
Great job, thanks
Thanks for watching!
I am looking for a metal box that has a RV 30 amp and a normal outlet so I can plug in a spot light to face my RV. Do you know of such a box? IE: some sought of combo box
They have the campground boxes but they are pricey, might need 2 separate boxes.
What happened to the ground wire outside did you connect it to the box around?
Its bonded to the box
I don’t have a light pole they charging me 6,000 to bring one out , can I use a temporary 50 amp breaker box ?
I had Home Depot deliver a 16 foot 4X6. It was only $38.08, but Home Depot delivery was $79. I believe I could have got the delivery cheaper if I would have said I had a way to get it off the truck. We took it off by hand. It is light enough for 2 to 3 people to carry.
So I may have missed it… you wired that into a 50amp double pole breaker correct?
Correct
I know this is a stupid question, but you used a 50 amp circuit breaker for that install? I didn’t catch it in the video.
Yes it's a double 50 amp
Double pole breaker 50 amp?
Double pole 50 amp
My 30 amp on generator is 220 and takes the same rv cable. With that said I did not now rv out let boxes were a different set up . How ever I set up a 50 amp any how I ran off my main out door panel to connect my mobile work shop to and on my work shop I installed a 50 amp twist lock which runs to basically a subpanel I would say inside
I am one of those unfortunate DIYers that has hooked his Rv to 30amp/220. It ruined my RV panel immediately.
As more & more people (1.7M 2023) buy EVs this project
should become more and more common to charge @ home.
!
Great video I thought my camper was a 50 amp 110 camper but obviously this is 220 or am I missing something?
Its 2 circuits of 120v 50 amp sharing a neutral, technically you could combine them to make 240 but thats not how RVs are wired.
when i do a job i wear safety glasses because i learned my lesson the hard way i thought my eyes were made of Titanium but i was lying to myself... i was dead wrong...
Question...
Please tell me that's all there is to this? I've heard about (crossing the streams, where you don't want 240, you want 120, is this avoiding that? Thanks!
240 appliances like dryers use both phases together to create 240 volts, 50 amp Rvs use each 120v phase separately to run more items at 120v each. Just be sure to get the right type of outlet for an RV.
Will 10/3 work also for 50 amp
No, 10/3 is only rated for 30amps
Not.sure if you said that a 50 amps is equal to 100 amps?? Since there are 2 hot wires. I always thought that a 50 amps is what its not 100 amps but i may be wrong
Yes you are correct
If you only have 3 conductors, could you ground the 50 box (ground wire) to a ground rod? Would it still work?
yes
Can i connect my 30 amp Rv to 50 amp box like that one you installed.
With a 50 to 30 amp adapter you can.
So I have a question. We bought a 50 amp RV and want to install 50 amp service at our house. But the campground we go to has mostly 30 amp service. I always heard it's best to have a surge protector. My question is, could I get a surge protector for my 50 amp rv that works with 30 amp service boxes and how would I hook it up? It's all confusing since I know really next to nothing about electricity wiring.
You can plug your surge suppressor into a 30 to 50 amp adapter at the campround.
I’ve tried to search it and nothing out there. Seams like you mite know that ?
110 or 220?
Nice. I have a 30 amp, and I'm doing a 30 amp. Seems wasteful to go 50 if u don't need it
You never know...
@@RVLivingYet Well I'm running a 8/3 wire 100 foot for a 30amp camper. Is that sufficient??
@@ronsmith8434 8/4 and you can upgrade to the 50 amp. Future proof, great for resale and visiting friends.
You didn’t mention if you are using a 50A breaker for the new circuit as part of your supply list. I know you are but someone else might not realize that.
Good point
Exactly thanks Duane that was a very important thing to know a duel 50 amp breaker right
I read about a shadetree "electrician" who fried a RV by making the outlet 240v. How do you avoid that?
Make sure you use an RV outlet with the correct wiring, when in doubt hire a pro.
@@RVLivingYet Thanks. The pro went cray-cray on his price.
My stepdad got shocked twice, once when he was repairing an air compressor, and once when he was fixing a boat lift fuse
I was unwilling to cut a hole in the back of the box since it was not marked. Now i am more willing.
U bonded the neutral and ground in a sub panel. Not correct
Misspoke, its actually a meter feed panel not a sub. Thanks for noticing.
"saftey first!" 😎
"or last." 😐
lmao
I guess I’ve been doing the safety wrong. I’ve been doing safety third but farmers don’t have safety first.
Good info, but I still have a ruined screw driver from a shocking experience
