This song was so well put together many people missed the message, and he even says “y’all don’t wanna hear me” because he knew. The instrumental of it was also designed in a very unique way, that instead of following the normal pattern, he changed it up to keep you hanging on. Most songs build up, peak, then come back down to end, he had his build up, peak, then repeatedly set up for the come down, but peaked over and over in the instrumental.
Yes that’s part of the message but that is honestly missing the point. People take this song as being happy but if you listen to Andre’s verses up to the “you don’t want to hear me” he is talking about how pointless relationships are and how people essentially pretend to be happy when they aren’t, and implies this was true even for his own parents. Then he says you don’t want to hear me and moves on to a much more upbeat tone. He knew people wouldn’t listen to actual message of the song.
well it’s about why do people stay together when it’s not working….they should get divorced rather than stay together and both be miserable and make their kids miserable

This song is one of those earworm songs in that you hear it and it stays in your brain all day. One of many fantastic songs on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. And the video is one of my favorites. It's a play on both The Beatles appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and Paul McCartney's Coming Up video from his 1980 McCartney II album.
