    This was a CHILD. Performing live. By herself. With NO backup or music. Vocally better & with more grace than most national anthems by famous artists today, who pull out EVERY STUNT when they do it..... yet this is underrated. It just says alot about the world. In general.

    She has soul in her voice. She was also known for her breathiness which was distinct and added to her earlier mysterious/laid bk persona. You can hear it in At Your Best, Journey to the Past, Age Aint Nothin' and I Don't Wanna. She has voice control here, especially at the end.
    Aaliyah had a style/persona that set her far apart from other artists, no one was or is similiar. 90s, early 2000s artists seemed have their own distinct persona like wrestlers (ie DMX, Da Brat, Missy etc).
    Some artists today dress or sound similiar or they tend to sing in the same key on every song.

    She sounded good. It's funny because she is one of the singers with the softer, prettier voices that "some" people are always saying that they can't sing. Other examples are Ashanti and Janet Jackson. They all have nice voices, but they don't have those "big" voices like Whitney, Aretha, Patti Labelle. Having a softer voice does NOT mean you can't sing. Aaliyah had great control here, a nice tone and delivery. Purely speaking of vocals only, she was probably a better "singer" than Ashanti or Janet. Although Janet Jackson is an awesome overall performer.

      Amen to that... Ppl are so closed minded, they think being a singer means you only belt out songs. I was in a semi-debate about this on Facebook recently, some posted: Name female singers who can't sing and two ppl said, Janet! As a Janet fan not only was I pissed I was annoyed. half the time ppl saying certain professional singers can't sing really don't know a thing about what it takes to be a damn singer I really hate stupid ppl.

    She would have been a vocal beast if this voicehad matured....the perfect light soprano with an impressive low extension....at this age she did t have the power or experience....butwith time that would have no doubt come to enrich her vocals. At the age of 15 she effortlessly shows range and dynamic control many things Beyoncé lacked at this age.

    she had so much power in her voice when she sang "free" and her low notes were untouchable. It was amazing to see this side of her voice because in all her music she mainly sings in head voice and really low notes. If she was still alive i bet her voice would have evolved and it would have been so strong!!

    For some reason it don't matter what hater people say, I just don't hear it. It's so patently obvious to anyone that this girl was a gift from above. She still illuminates my life and inspires even with the challenge of no longer being here. In a strange way her live performances are a whole different kind of magic. The songs are like little faberge eggs and then you watch her live, you see the magic that is solely hers. It's hard to describe but you see her soul and what makes her unique. We all have that in our own way, but she just knew what she was doing here and took life for everything she could and didn't deny herself any experience. I wish we all could know ourselves the way she did. I miss her loads, what a talent and beauty

    *applauds* Aaliyah didn't sing like this cause she didn't want too. Not cause she couldn't. People discredit her every chance they get but she didn't care. Her goal was to do the complete *OPPOSITE* of the typical singer. *Singing high notes*. Every artist you know is known for singing high, no sense of variety, but when you come to Aaliyah you automatically know. Her alongside *Sade, T-Boz, Janet & Toni Braxton* have thee most *"unique"* voices in our culture. She never focused on fame, yeah she knew it came with the territory but she preferred to take the risk of standing out instead of blending in *:)*

      Talent is energy. No matter what voice u got, or acting skills, or writer, or theatre its energy coming from the presence. My favorite singer is Whitney Houston, whos known not only for the voice, but the skills, and ENERGY she possessed with her talent. Amy Winehouse didnt have high notes skills, but boy, she sang better than some singers...
      Aaliyah was GREAT and WONDERFUL singer, and dancer and actress... she was unique. Her voice was smooth, and soft and plus her dancing skills, and acting. Beyonce didnt posses this all pack and this energy Aaliyah had. Better voice yes, but overall.. NO...

      It's not THAT good. She could sing very well, but nerves got her live every time.

    • @melclibra
      @melclibra 2 роки тому +5

      @exysness it was live tho. Beyonce didn't do this live when she started her career. That says Aaliyah was a real artist. Who cares about nerves. It sounded good-live plus she was only 16. Nobody will ever be Whitney

      Yes I believe Dionne Warwick said she was surprised by her vocal abilities because all Aaliyah would often stick to a lower register or her falsetto. She said she needed to learn to trust her voice .

      @hona4850 2 роки тому +2

      On her first album, the song "street thing", at the end, show cases this vocal ability. If you've never heard it, I'd say listen do it. She does a similar long hold note at the end of that song.

    I think what makes this so impressive is the fact she was only like 15 or 16 when she did this and sound better than the ones who are older that sing this 💯💯 and i love how she put her own twist to it but still kept the traditional way at the same time

    So I'm listening in to my 4th graders online class today and out of nowhere i hear the anthem by Whitney Houston.. The teacher then says extra credit for those who find another version by someone they like. Also my son has a girl in his class named Aaliyah who the teacher can NEVER pronounce her name...i'm playing this for her so maybe she can remember the poor girls name now haha Aaliyah has a beautiful voice and i miss the 90s R&B style so much is lost these days.
