Marvin, he was a friend of mine
And he could sing his song
      His heart in every line
Marvin, sang of the joy and pain
      He opened up our minds
And I still can hear him say
Oh talk to me, so you can see, what's goin' on
Say you will, sing your songs, for evermore, evermore
      Gonna be some sweet sounds
      Comin' down, on the nightshift
      I bet you're singing proud
      Oh, I bet you'll pull a crowd
      Gonna be a long night,
It's gonna be all right, on the nightshift
      You found another home
I know you're not alone, on the nightshift, oooh
      You found another home
I know you're not alone, on the nightshift

I was a 16 year old white kid hearing “Mercy Mercy Me” for the first time. It was such a striking song, sung with true emotions. It was spot on describing the racial and social inequalities, at a time when there was turmoil over the Vietnam war. I’m 68 now, but still moved by his one of a kind voice and music. We’re lucky that we can still hear his music.

The anthem is a hard song to sing, the range is 12 octaves which is challenging. The beauty of Marvin’s version is he doesn’t conform to the anthem, but bends the anthem to him. It’s genius and allows Marvin to give this amazing rendition using his talents… amazing artistry.

Marvin Gaye gave a master class on timing in this performance. He builds the tension at such a pace, that by the time he sings "Free" the audience is begging for release and he gives it to them then expertly brings the performance to resolution.
It's the classic arc that all storytellers aspire to: rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. And he did it in under three minutes, yet any shorter would have felt unfulfilling and any longer would have been excruciating...

    • @777jones
      @777jones 6 років тому +22

nguzosmusic you are right, the way he lets the timing slide into the back seat and then back into last week, and then he somehow ends up ahead of the beat?! What is that?! He planned that. Just wow haha.
